[2026 Winner] Seed Sovereignty Through The Lens Of Decolonization, Lily A. Marx
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
This paper explores the movement of seed sovereignty, a contemporary movement stemming from the history of theft, appropriation, and forced assimilation endured by indigenous peoples. This movement recognizes that consumers alone cannot mend the damage being done to our food systems, but instead encourages communities to take political action by saving seeds and rebuilding connections with the land.
Resilience In Recreation: Stories Of A Changing Climate, Casey L. Auberle
Resilience In Recreation: Stories Of A Changing Climate, Casey L. Auberle
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
As the impacts of climate change become increasingly prevalent, the outdoor activities that bond us to our local communities and environments are under threat. In Missoula, MT, drought, rising temperatures, and wildfire smoke change what it means to fish, ski, run, and recreate in our town. In a series of Q&A style podcasts, environmental philosophy graduate student Casey Auberle creates a platform to share stories of a changing climate through the lens of local recreators and climate activists. Capturing these voices invites us to consider our relationship with nature on both an individual and communal scale, to find unity in …

Building Collaborative Capacity For Coexistence With The Montana Beaver Working Group, Shane Randle
Building Collaborative Capacity For Coexistence With The Montana Beaver Working Group, Shane Randle
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
Despite beavers’ recent surge in popularity, prevailing negative attitudes and the persistence of beaver removal practices remain obstacles for those advocating living with beavers. The Montana Beaver Working Group (BWG) advances beavers’ role in ecological and community resilience through members’ collaborative efforts, including beaver-related restoration and conflict resolution projects. Bringing together people with diverse values and perspectives, the BWG builds collective understanding, develops a holistic vision for beavers in Montana, and supports members in pursuing it. As the group’s impacts and membership have grown, so too has their need to adapt. For my Civic Engagement Project, I strengthened the BWG’s …
A Quantum Walk Through Sustainability: Nonlinear Thinking For A Nonlinear World, Sanjay Wahal
A Quantum Walk Through Sustainability: Nonlinear Thinking For A Nonlinear World, Sanjay Wahal
Trade & Scholarly Monographs
We are living through a planetary inflection point. Conventional sustainability thinking-rooted in linear logic, siloed disciplines, and incremental fixes-no longer suffices. The climate crisis is nonlinear. Our response must be as well.
In this book, Dr. Sanjay Wahal, global systems strategist and founder of Decarbonization, LLC, delivers a visionary, paradigm-shifting framework that draws inspiration from quantum theory to reimagine how we think, act, and lead for climate action.
This is not a book about quick fixes or silver bullets. It is a meditation on coherence, emergence, and transformation. It is for those who believe sustainability is not just a policy …
A Photographic Exploration Of Humboldt's Coastal Lagoons, Aldaron Laird
A Photographic Exploration Of Humboldt's Coastal Lagoons, Aldaron Laird
Trade & Scholarly Monographs
This visually stunning book shows the same meticulous artistry that Aldaron displayed when depicting Wigi, but it shows places so different from Humboldt Bay that they seem to be of a different world. And in a sense they are, for the imprints of modern Humboldt County are here much less frequent and far, far gentler. Instead, we see the land of the Coastal Yuroks, which in many places is little changed from what it was like before the arrival of the Whites a hundred and seventy-five years ago. The only buildings we see are those of the traditional Yurok style, …

A Guide To Growing Broad: : Expanding The Notion Of Social For Mental Health, Natural Resources, And The Infinite Intersections Of How To Care For The World, Leah D. Nuese-Yaker
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This MSW portfolio narrative examines the expanding boundaries of social work practice at the intersection of human and ecological systems. Organized as a series of interconnected personal essays structured around river metaphors, the portfolio argues that social work's anthropocentric foundations limit the profession's capacity to address contemporary crises of environmental justice, climate change, and ecological health. Drawing on fieldwork in natural resources conflict resolution, wilderness therapy, outdoor education, and climate health advocacy in rural Montana, the author demonstrates competency across all ten CSWE social work practice behaviors while advancing a practice framework that centers relational, embodied, and ecologically grounded intervention. …

Individuals living with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and related gastrointestinal conditions often face significant physical and emotional challenges following colostomy or ileostomy surgery. While ostomy bags are essential medical devices that support health and survival, they frequently create difficulties related to clothing fit, comfort, discretion, and self-expression. Despite growing conversations around inclusivity and adaptive apparel, the contemporary fashion market offers limited stylish, affordable, and functional clothing options for individuals with ostomies, particularly younger consumers who value both comfort and personal style. This lack of inclusive design can negatively impact confidence, body image, and overall quality of …

Addressing Eco-Ableism In Richmond, Virginia's Urban Master Plan, Ren Hollis
UROP Posters
As Richmond, Virginia, approaches its 300th anniversary in 2037 and continues implementing Richmond 300: A Guide for Growth, questions remain about whether individuals with disabilities are equitably represented in the city’s future planning. Richmond 300 is the comprehensive plan guiding Richmond’s policies, programs, zoning changes, and redevelopment. This master plan is a “living document” that will evolve as the city grows, meaning revisions and improvements are possible before its full implementation. This study asks: Is eco-ableism present in Richmond 300: A Guide for Growth, and how could the City of Richmond address this issue?
Ableism refers to discrimination against individuals …

[2025 Honorable Mention] Racial Marginalization And Pesticide Exposure In Monterey County, Haleigh Fagundes
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
This paper examines the concept of environmental racism in the context of harmful pesticides and their disproportionate use in prominently Hispanic communities. These communities continue to face the consequences of exposure despite their activism. The concept of environmental patriotism, as proposed by Anne Todd in Communicating Environmental Patriotism: A Rhetorical History of the American Environmental Movement (2013), is incompatible with the data that supports the existence of environmental racism. In this piece Todd argues that channeling the pride one feels for their country is an effective way of promoting environmental efforts amongst individual citizens. The data to be presented denies …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
• The Arctic Ocean region stands at the forefront of global environmental transformation, serving as a harbinger of climate change and a frontier for emergent geopolitical and economic interests.
• The Arctic region's economic potential, particularly in shipping and resource extraction, appears to offer shorter trade routes, reduced fuel consumption, and increased access to high-value resources. However, this analysis largely ignores the complex geo-physical, environmental and geographical limitations of the region.
• The fragility of Arctic Ocean ecosystems – characterized by slow ecological recovery, specialised biodiversity, and extreme environmental conditions – renders them especially vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances. …
