A New Keynesian Approach To Estimating Welfare Losses Under Strict And Flexible-Targeting Regimes, Shawn Weber
A New Keynesian Approach To Estimating Welfare Losses Under Strict And Flexible-Targeting Regimes, Shawn Weber
Theses and Dissertations
How do different inflation-targeting regimes affect the monetary loss-function of a central bank aiming at stabilizing inflation around an inflation target and stabilizing the real economy? Under a basic New-Keynesian framework, this paper examines the effect of inflation-targeting regimes on the monetary loss function of a central bank.
Implications Of Macroeconomic Controls In Ghana, Wisdom Takumah
Implications Of Macroeconomic Controls In Ghana, Wisdom Takumah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ghana’s desire to achieve sustainable economic growth with relatively stable price level pursue both monetary and fiscal policies that could lead to macroeconomic. This study examines the effects of fiscal and monetary policy on economic growth and determine the level of convergence of growth for Ghana using structural equation modeling (SEM) using time series data from 2008 to 2017. Both short run and long-run results revealed that the ratio of government spending to private investment was statistically significant and it exerted a positive impact on economic growth, an indication that government expenditure is a key channel through which we can …

The Dynamic Interrelationship Between Interest Rate And Macroeconomic Policy Objectives: Case Of The United Kingdom, Mostafa Aboelsoud, Dimitrios Paparas, Azzouz Zouaoui, Mustafa Kasim
Economics
The objective of this study is to provide empirical evidence on the short- and long-run relationships between the short-term interest rate, London interbank offered rate (LIBOR) and macroeconomic policy objectives, such as price stability, economic growth, and stability of the exchange rate market. For this purpose, we deploy quarterly frequency data from the United Kingdom between 2000 and 2015 and adopt a multiple regression model.
Furthermore, this study uses the Johansen, Stock-Watson cointegration test and the Granger Causality test in order to examine the dynamic short- and long-run relationships among LIBOR, the consumer price index as a proxy of price …
Monetary Policy And Energy Price Shocks, Bao Tan Huynh
Monetary Policy And Energy Price Shocks, Bao Tan Huynh
Research Collection School Of Economics
A New Keynesian framework with endogenous energy production is proposed to investigate the role of monetary policy in addressing disturbances in energy markets. The novelty of the model lies in the endogenous production of energy with convex costs, explicit modeling of goods with different degrees of energy-dependency and sectoral price rigidities. Our analyses prescribe the desirable monetary responses to four types of energy price shocks, highlighting the distinct characteristics of each shock and affirming the need for diverse policy considerations. We also found several points of divergence in relation to previous studies on addressing energy supply shocks. In addition, we …

The Effects Of Quantitative Easing In The United States: Implications For Future Central Bank Policy Makers, Matthew Q. Rubino
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects of the Federal Reserve’s recent bond buying programs, specifically Quantitative Easing 1, Quantitative Easing 2, Operation Twist (or the Fed’s Maturity Extension Program), and Quantitative Easing 3. In this study, I provide a picture of the economic landscape leading up to the deployment of the programs, an overview of quantitative easing including each program’s respective objectives, and how and why the Fed decided to implement the programs. Using empirical analysis, I measure each program’s effectiveness by applying four models including a yield curve model, an inflation model, a money supply …

Interest Rate Elasticity Of Private Sector Credit In Nigeria, A. Bamidele, K. O. Oji, E. S. Smith, L. S. Jimoh
Economic and Financial Review
This study estimated the interest rate elasticity of private sector credit in Nigeria using the Vector Error Correction mechanism. The variables specified included real private sector credit. real GDP. Prime and maximum lending rates, exchange rate, 9)-day Treasury bill rate, inflation rate and all share index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The data utilised covered the period: 1998 Q1 to 2013 Q4. Granger causality tests were performed, and the co-integration analysis of the Johansen system-wide procedure was employed. The results indicated thot private sector credit was fairly interest inelastic in terms of both maximum and prime lending rates. The estimated …

Monetary Policy And Asset Prices In Nigeria, M.K. Tule, P. Ogiji, G. Okorie, D. Mbaka
Economic and Financial Review
This paper attempts to contribute to the debate on the linkages between monetary policy and asset prices in the woke of the recent global financial crisis. The study employs vector error correction (VEC) mode! on Nigerian weekly data from January 2007 to October 2013. A pair-wise granger causality test indicated a unidirectional causality from asset prices to monetary policy. Exchange rate at lag one was negatively related to the All Share Index. suggesting that exchange rate appreciation is likely to lead to excessive appreciation in asset prices. The results further indicated a positive relationship between financial system stability and asset …
Cyclical Public Policy And Financial Factors, Vishrut Dhirendra Rana
Cyclical Public Policy And Financial Factors, Vishrut Dhirendra Rana
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The Great Recession of 2009 motivated a growing body of research on the quantitative modeling of financial factors and appropriate policy responses. This dissertation is a part of that line of research and looks at the quantitative macroeconomic effects of financial factors on business cycles. The dissertation uses quantitative macroeconomic general equilibrium models (popular dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE)) that allow flexibility in micro-founded modeling of macroeconomic environments. The dissertation captures financial factors through explicit modeling of financial intermediation, featuring costly state verification and collateral constraints as financial frictions. The first chapter offers a new quantitative model of credit cycles …
What Lies At The Core Of Core Inflation? An Empirical Analysis To Identify The Determinants Of Core Inflation In Pakistan, Mehwish Ghulam Ali, Muhammad Ather Elahi, Qazi Masood Ahmed
What Lies At The Core Of Core Inflation? An Empirical Analysis To Identify The Determinants Of Core Inflation In Pakistan, Mehwish Ghulam Ali, Muhammad Ather Elahi, Qazi Masood Ahmed
Business Review
Core inflation leads to erosion of purchasing power and distorts income distribution in favor of the rich and the creditors. Further, it aggravates poverty due to its regressive effect. By targeting core inflation, the Central Bank attempts to reduce poverty and improve income distribution. The Central Bank does and should target core inflation for the aforementioned objectives, hence it becomes necessary to identify if factors apart from monetary policy affect core inflation. This paper aims to identify the determinants of core inflation in Pakistan. This study is motivated by the lack of work done in identifying the determinants of core …

Monetary-Fiscal Policy Interaction: An Empirical Analysis In Egypt, Sahar M. Abdel-Haleim, Mohamed Hassan, Lobna M. Abdel-Latif
Business Administration
This paper examines the effect of the developments introduced since 2003 in Egypt on the nature of interaction of monetary and fiscal policies and the achievement of macroeconomic objectives. Utilizing the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) approach, the dynamic interaction of policies and their effects on macroeconomic aggregates are investigated. The findings support the success of the developments in eliminating the fiscal dominance. However, coordination between policies is still weak to achieve the macroeconomic stabilization objectives. The results also prove the conventional Keynesian effect of fiscal policy on real GDP. However, the fiscal multiplier is very small. Likewise, expansionary monetary policy …

An Examination Of The Structural Inflation Dynamics In Nigeria, O. J. Odonye, S. O. Odeniran, A. O. Oduyemi, O. J. Olaoye, K. J. Ajayi
Economic and Financial Review
This study examines the dynamics of inflation in Nigeria, including the structural evolution as well as the direction of its movement with a view to designing appropriate policy measures to rein in the inflationary pressures. The study utilized quarterly data from 1970(1) to 2013 (4) except for Bureau de Change (BDC) premium where the duration was 1991(1) to 2013 (4) based on Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. The results show that structural factors like budget deficit, rainfall, variation in export, exchange rate premium have profound influence on movement in CPI in Nigeria during the period.

CBN Annual Report
Annual Report and Financial Statements of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the year ended 31st December, 2014. In general, 2014 has been a very eventful and challenging year for the Bank, the country, and the world at large. In the course of the year, the Bank underwent significant changes in its governance composition. In 2014, the global economy witnessed considerable vulnerabilities characterized by fragile growth and weak economic outlook. Global growth recovery was modest and continued to be threatened by strong downside risks, as a result of sharp drop in commodity prices, escalating geo-political tensions, and heightening threats …
Inflation Targeting And Growth: The Role Of The Tradable Sector, Luis Monroy Gómez Franco
Inflation Targeting And Growth: The Role Of The Tradable Sector, Luis Monroy Gómez Franco
Undergraduate Economic Review
This paper provides an analytical explanation to the empirical association between monetary policy conducted according to the inflation targeting (IT) framework and the appreciation of the exchange rate, relating it to the literature on the effects of the exchange rate on growth. A two sector small open economy model is developed in which the behavior of the non tradable inflation and the nominal exchange rate are analyzed. The results indicate that the response to inflation variance under the IT regime causes the appreciation trend. Since this trend is not reversed immediately, increasing returns in the tradable sector affect capital accumulation.
Is Monetary Policy Responsive To External Reserves?: Empirical Evidences From Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba
Is Monetary Policy Responsive To External Reserves?: Empirical Evidences From Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba
Economic and Financial Review
The global economy has witnessed extraordinary boost in the accumulation of external reserves, following the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s. External reserves increased sharply from US$1.2 trillion in 1995 to over US$10.0 trillion in January 2012. Developing countries increased their share from 30.0 per cent in 1990 to 67.0 per cent in 2011. Nigeria is not left out in this trend, as external reserves grew from US$5.5 billion in 1999 to US$34.68 billion in March 2012, representing over 530 per cent increase within the period. This placed Nigeria as the 44th largest reserves holder in the world. Reflecting on …

Contributions Of Financial Sector Reforms And Credit Supply To Nigerian Agricultural Sector (1978-2009), Anthony O. Onoja, M. E. Onu, S. Ajodo-Ohiemi
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study analyzed the trends and pattern of institutional credit supply to agriculture during pre- and post-financial reforms along with their determinants. It then compared the effects of reform policies on access to institutional credits in Nigerian agricultural sector before and after the reforms (1978 - 1985; and 1986 -2009). Relying mainly on time series data from CBN and NBS, it used ordinary least squares method (linear, semi-log and double log) to model the determinants of banking sector lending to the agricultural sector during the review period. The models were subjected to several econometric tests before accepting one. Chow test …
Macroeconomics After The Great Recession: Consensus Or Conflict?, Hailiang Xu
Macroeconomics After The Great Recession: Consensus Or Conflict?, Hailiang Xu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unlike microeconomics where there are relatively few disagreements, the field of macroeconomics has always been the arena of several competing theories. Despite that history of conflict, in the late 1980s during the Great Moderation, the New Classicals and the New Keynesians reached an agreement, known as the New Consensus during the Great Moderation. For decades, the New Consensus has dominated macroeconomic theory and policymaking not only in the U.S., but also throughout the world. After many years of calm, however, the 2007-2008 subprime mortgage crisis and its consequent Great Recession demonstrated that how fragile that consensus was.
While the debate …
Credit Market Imperfections, Financial Crisis And The Transmission Of Monetary Policy, Brett Spencer
Credit Market Imperfections, Financial Crisis And The Transmission Of Monetary Policy, Brett Spencer
CMC Senior Theses
This paper uses U.S. macroeconomic data drawn from 2001 to 2010 in order to test for the operation of a credit channel of monetary transmission. Using a combination of a VAR and ADL time series frameworks, evidence is found for the impairment of the credit channel during the crisis period relative to the period which preceded it. Evidence is also found against the presence of a "credit crunch" during the crisis, and supporting evidence is found for the existence of a "credit trap." This analysis indicates a significant role for credit market imperfections in the transmission of monetary policy, and …
Is The Philips Curve Useful For Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Carlos J. Garcia
Is The Philips Curve Useful For Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Carlos J. Garcia
CBN Occasional Papers
The objective of this article is to determine if the Phillips curve is a relevant tool to conduct monetary policy in African countries wishing to adopt an inflation-targeting regime. I choose Nigeria as a case of study because it is in the early stage of the implementation of this regime. I estimate a medium-sized model for monetary policy analysis. The model reflects a synthesis between the New Keynesian and the Real Business Cycle (RBC) approaches. Then I estimate the model by using Bayesian econometric technique in order to overcome the shortage of data availability. The study concludes that there is …

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 2007, Central Bank Of Nigeria
CBN Annual Report
In 2007, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) faced significant challenges in monetary management due to statutory allocations to government tiers, autonomous foreign exchange inflows, and pre-election spending. These challenges were addressed through Open Market Operations (OMO), issuance of treasury securities, standing facilities, and foreign exchange swaps. The introduction of the monetary policy rate (MPR) in December 2006 moderated inter-bank rates, encouraged trading, and improved the transmission of monetary policy actions. The Bank intensified its non-regular management activities to ensure the Policy Support Instrument (PSI) target was met. The financial system at end-2007 comprised the CBN, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance …
A Var Analysis Of Singapore's Monetary Transmission Mechanism, Hwee Kwan Chow
A Var Analysis Of Singapore's Monetary Transmission Mechanism, Hwee Kwan Chow
Research Collection School Of Economics
The Singapore economy has experienced greater business cycle fluctuations in recent years, being subject to recurrent shocks from the external environment. Given the extreme openness of the economy—Singapore’s export share of GDP is approximately 180%—it is not surprising that the main cause of the increase in economic volatility is a rise in the frequency and magnitude of exogenous shocks. These include the downswing in the global electronics industry in 1996–97, the Asian financial crisis in 1997–98, the burst of the information technology bubble in 2001, and the outbreak of the SARS respiratory disease in 2003. Such a close sequence of …

How Do Forecasts Respond To Changes In Monetary Policy?, Laurence Ball, Dean D. Croushore
Economics Faculty Publications
Just as changes in atmospheric conditions affect weather forecasts, changes in monetary policy affect economic forecasts. When monetary policy shifts, forecasters change their predictions about growth and inflation. But does the economy change to the same extent that forecasts do? In this article, Laurence Ball and Dean Croushore examine forecasts from the Survey of Professional Forecasters to determine if forecasts and the economy respond in tandem or if there are significant differences.

Monetary And Financial Sector Policies In The Year 2000 Budget Of The Fgn, M. O. Ojo
Bullion
The paper attempts to review the monetary and financial sector policies of CBN during the 2000 fiscal year. It also discussed the issues and problems of implementation of the policies. The paper observes that the Nigerian economy witnessed some anxious moments during the 1999 fiscal year. Severe Pressures built-up in the economy mainly because of the expansionary fiscal policy of the Federal Government during the first five months of the year. lf price of oil in the international market continue to rise above budget expectations and expenditure does not rise in tandem, finance is likely to constrain achievement of most …

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1997, Central Bank Of Nigeria
CBN Annual Report
In 1997, Nigeria experienced its third consecutive year of macroeconomic stability, resulting in modest improvement in domestic output growth and a persistently low inflation rate. The balance of payments position showed a modest surplus, and significant success was achieved in reducing domestic liquidity growth. Domestic output expanded further due to increased agricultural output and crude petroleum production, while the inflation rate declined further. Domestic output, measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increased by 3.8% in 1997, as against the average growth rate of 2.3% in the preceding three years. The fight against inflation was highly successful, reaching a single …
Inflation Forecasts: How Good Are They?, Dean D. Croushore
Inflation Forecasts: How Good Are They?, Dean D. Croushore
Economics Faculty Publications
Forecasts of inflation affect decision-making in many segments of the economy. But in the early 1980s, economists found that forecasts in surveys taken over the past 20 years systematically underpredicted inflation. As a result, many economists stopped paying attention to forecasts. However, they may have abandoned them too quickly. In this article, Dean Croushore takes a closer look at survey forecasts and, after considering some relevant factors, concludes that inflation forecasts may not be as bad as you think.
