Samuel Huntington, Professionalism, And Self-Policing In The Us Army Officer Corps, Brian Mcallister Linn
Samuel Huntington, Professionalism, And Self-Policing In The Us Army Officer Corps, Brian Mcallister Linn
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Drawing on Samuel P. Huntington’s three phases of self-regulation used to determine if an occupation qualifies as a profession, this article focuses on the third phase of policing and removing those who fail to uphold the standards set forth in the first two phases. It reviews how the US Army implemented this phase following the Civil War through the post–Vietnam War years and the implications for the officer corps.
Cellphilming And Building Solidarity With Queer Youth To Speak Back To Historical Erasures In New Brunswick Social Studies Classrooms, Casey Burkholder
Cellphilming And Building Solidarity With Queer Youth To Speak Back To Historical Erasures In New Brunswick Social Studies Classrooms, Casey Burkholder
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
New Brunswick, Canada’s K-12 Social Studies curricula erases the myriad histories and experiences of the province’s LGBTQ+ communities. Building on these erasures, this study analyzes how six queer, trans, and non-binary young people (aged 14-17) created cellphilms (cellphone + mobile film production) in response to these absences. In the study, I ask: How might engaging in media and art production with young people—and screening and exhibiting these productions in online and community spaces—work to counter dominant forms of apathy and denial, and support youth to claim a stake in creating solidarities, belonging, and community-making? What is required for youth-produced media …

Impact Of The Change In Payments On The Actual And Perceived Behaviors Of Medical Care Providers Authors, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale
Impact Of The Change In Payments On The Actual And Perceived Behaviors Of Medical Care Providers Authors, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale
Business Analytics Faculty Publications
Prior literature established the link between a person aging out of a parent's insurance coverage at age nineteen and a significant decrease in insurance coverage of those nineteen-year-old young adults. This paper furthers this line of research by establishing a statically significant change in the payment burden of the various sources that comprise the total payment received by the medical care providers treating young adults who have aged out of their parent's insurance. The empirical method used is the regression discontinuity framework. The impact of the change in the providers' payment sources on the providers' behavior (supply-side) and the patients' …

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the “context-specific organizational actions and policies that take into account stakeholders’ expectations and the triple bottom line of economic, social, and environmental performance” (Aguinis & Glavas, 2012). Businesses using the CSR model engage in or work towards bettering society in three spaces: the environment, social welfare, and governance (ESG's). We want to see how this model is communicated among stakeholders, and if this social mission is fully integrated into the practices and workspaces of YUM! Brands.
The Conscience Of The Dollar: Are Religious Donors Sensitive To Moral Infractions?, Bradley Yam
The Conscience Of The Dollar: Are Religious Donors Sensitive To Moral Infractions?, Bradley Yam
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Do religious donors give strategically or idealistically? The entanglement between the conservative Republican party and religious groups, particularly evangelical Christianity, on issues of abortion, sexual mores, and family values makes it difficult to analyze this question along voting lines. Regardless of how one votes, citizens and organizations can still punish their political leaders for moral infractions by voting with their wallets. This study aims to discern if there is a relationship between political scandals and religious donations.
Shadow Banks, Money Market Funds, And Regulation: How Much Is Too Much?, Ainsley Weber
Shadow Banks, Money Market Funds, And Regulation: How Much Is Too Much?, Ainsley Weber
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper examines the development of the shadow banking sector in the US leading up to the global financial crisis of 2007-2008. Shadow banking, or nonbank financial intermediation, consists of credit intermediation that takes place outside of the traditional banking sector. This can include off-balance sheet operations at banks and finance holding companies as well as operations at other nonbank financial companies. The paper reviews how shadow banking emerged as a result of regulatory arbitrage and the search for higher returns before considering how it contributed to the buildup of systemic risk leading up to the crisis. It specifically inspects …
The Run On Repo And Bank Stock Returns, Madison Battaglia
The Run On Repo And Bank Stock Returns, Madison Battaglia
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The run on the sale and repurchase market (“run on repo”) was at the nexus of the Financial Crisis of 2007- 2009. Up until now, the economics literature has not studied the effect of sale and repurchase agreement (“repo”) haircuts on bank stock returns using an empirical economic approach. I utilize private repo haircut data from 2007Q1-2009Q1 supplemented with bank stock returns, total reserve balances, and market rate of returns and risk-free rate of returns data to trace the path of crisis from repurchase agreements into a market that had no connection to housing. In linear model regressions, I find …
The Dark Side Of Variety: An Economic Model Of Choice Overload, Teeger Li Blasheck, Jawwad Noor
The Dark Side Of Variety: An Economic Model Of Choice Overload, Teeger Li Blasheck, Jawwad Noor
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Choice Overload is a phenomenon well studied in psychology. It goes against the classical ³more is better´ dogma and describes the behavior of an agent when presented with too many options, in which instance an agent may either experience a decrease in satisfaction or end up deferring the choice all together. The standard Utility Maximization model of economics, however, largely follows the classical dogma and is unable to accommodate the behaviors of Choice Overload. This paper seeks to offer two possible economic models for Choice Overload based on the two mechanisms put forward by the psychological literature: search cost and …
Measuring Palatability As A Linear Combination Of Nutrient Levels In Food Items, Jeffrey S. Young
Measuring Palatability As A Linear Combination Of Nutrient Levels In Food Items, Jeffrey S. Young
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
It well known that palatability and nutritional quality of foods and/or diets are viewed as being in tension with one another. While there exist multiple measures of healthiness, there are no such measures for tastiness. This gap limits the degree to which researchers can investigate this tension and its implications for dietary behavior and hence public health and nutrition policy. The scope of future work concerning the dietary behavior of Americans would expand greatly if researchers better understood consumers’ willingness to eat certain foods, which matters as much as recommending those foods for them to eat in the first place. …

Learning Efficiency Of Multi-Agent Information Structures, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yuhta Ishii
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We study settings in which, prior to playing an incomplete information game, players observe many draws of private signals about the state from some information structure. Signals are i.i.d. across draws, but may display arbitrary correlation across players. For each information structure, we define a simple learning efficiency index, which only considers the statistical distance between the worst-informed player’s marginal signal distributions in different states. We show, first, that this index characterizes the speed of common learning (Cripps, Ely, Mailath, and Samuelson, 2008): In particular, the speed at which players achieve approximate common knowledge of the state coincides with the …

Association Between Financial Education, Affective And Cognitive Financial Knowledge, And Financial Behaviors, Lucy M. Delgadillo, Yoon Lee
Association Between Financial Education, Affective And Cognitive Financial Knowledge, And Financial Behaviors, Lucy M. Delgadillo, Yoon Lee
Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Faculty Publications
Using data from the 2018 National Financial Capability Study, this paper examined the relationship between financial education participation and affective and cognitive financial knowledge. Involvement in financial education yielded statistically significant associations between affective and cognitive domains. The results showed that participation in financial education was associated with both cognitive and affective financial knowledge as well as long-term financial behaviors. The findings supported the case for life-long learning of financial education for young adults, Blacks and Hispanics, and women. One important implication was the need to include both the affective and cognitive domains when teaching or researching financial education.

The authors use these data to propose strategies to close equity gaps. This fact sheet examines data for the Mountain West metropolitan areas included in the original report.
Information Markets And Nonmarkets, Dirk Bergemann, Marco Ottaviani
Information Markets And Nonmarkets, Dirk Bergemann, Marco Ottaviani
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
As large amounts of data become available and can be communicated more easily and processed more e¤ectively, information has come to play a central role for economic activity and welfare in our age. This essay overviews contributions to the industrial organization of information markets and nonmarkets, while attempting to maintain a balance between foundational frameworks and more recent developments. We start by reviewing mechanism-design approaches to modeling the trade of information. We then cover ratings, predictions, and recommender systems. We turn to forecasting contests, prediction markets, and other institutions designed for collecting and aggregating information from decentralized participants. Finally, we …
Experimental Persuasion, Ian Ball, José-Antonio Espín-Sánchez
Experimental Persuasion, Ian Ball, José-Antonio Espín-Sánchez
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We introduce experimental persuasion between Sender and Receiver. Sender chooses an experiment to perform from a feasible set of experiments. Receiver observes the realization of this experiment and chooses an action. We characterize optimal persuasion in this baseline regime and in an alternative regime in which Sender can commit to garble the outcome of the experiment. Our model includes Bayesian persuasion as the special case in which every experiment is feasible; however, our analysis does not require concavification. Since we focus on experiments rather than beliefs, we can accommodate general preferences including costly experiments and non-Bayesian inference.
Socioeconomic Status Of Second-Generation Southeast Asians: New Evidence And Analysis, Wayne Carroll
Socioeconomic Status Of Second-Generation Southeast Asians: New Evidence And Analysis, Wayne Carroll
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
Over a million refugees and other immigrants arrived in the United States from Southeast Asia starting in 1975. Forty-five years later, their adult children have completed their education in the U.S. and entered the labor force. This study uses a large microdata sample from the American Community Survey to describe and compare the socioeconomic status of Southeast Asian American adults and native-born white adults. Results are disaggregated by gender, generation (Generation 1.5 and Generation 2), and ethnic group (Hmong, other Laotian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese). Regression analysis – controlling for age, educational attainment, and other factors – shows that native-born white …

After the post-election crisis of 2011, Cote d'Ivoire has experienced increased economic growth. However, this growth does not benefit local businesses, especially startups. Athough the phenomenon is very trendy, the many startups that are created are struggling to succeed. the founders' motivations are not always good, their knowledge and skills need to be reviewed and the environment is not favorable to them.
Economics For Everyday Life: Opportunity Cost And Marginal Benefit, Christian Palencia
Economics For Everyday Life: Opportunity Cost And Marginal Benefit, Christian Palencia
International Programs
Economics is a social science that may feel unreal or even useless for many people. Its concepts and definitions can be abstracts, complex and unpragmatic. However, the comprehend of some ideas of this science can be the key for a success decision making process for normal people’s life.
Contrary to popular belief, the economy is not about money, it is focused on studying the problem of shortage. Resources such as time and money are scarce, consequently, understanding the basic of economics is fundamental for everyone not only for economists. The opportunity cost and marginal benefit are an examples of two …

Theses & Dissertations
Metabolic syndrome is multicomponent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and type 2 diabetes that reflects the clustering of at least 3 cardiometabolic risk factors, among hypertension, impaired glucose regulations, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity. CVD are the leading cause of death in the U.S. CVD occur at earlier age and is a major cause of death and disability among people with diabetes. As compared to Japan, 13.3% to 44% of the excess CVD mortality in the U.S. can be explained by the metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 34.3% in 2007 to 2014 and it increases with age. Metabolic …

Corrective Regulation With Imperfect Instruments, Eduardo Dávila, Ansgar Walther
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper studies the optimal design of second-best corrective regulation, when some agents or activities cannot be perfectly regulated. We show that policy elasticities and Pigouvian wedges are sufficient statistics to characterize the marginal welfare impact of regulatory policies in a large class of environments. We show that the optimal second-best policy is determined by a subset of policy elasticities: leakage elasticities, and characterize the marginal value of relaxing regulatory constraints. We apply our results to scenarios with unregulated agents/activities and with uniform regulation across agents/activities. We illustrate our results in applications to shadow banking, scale-invariant regulation, asset substitution, and …

How Did Homelessness Change During The Great Recession And Recovery?, Jenny Schuetz, Matthew Ring
Policy Briefs and Reports
Job losses from the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated housing insecurity among low-income renters over the past year. Federal, state, and local policymakers have created temporary measures to help reduce displacement among people who have lost their jobs, but there is considerable uncertainty about what will happen when these temporary measures end. To gain insight into how homelessness changes over macroeconomic cycles, we examine changes in homelessness rates from 2007 to 2020. Our analysis focuses on four metro areas that were particularly hard-hit by the foreclosure crisis: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Riverside. Overall homelessness rates declined in all metros …
