Holding Up Green Energy, Nicholas Ryan
Holding Up Green Energy, Nicholas Ryan
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Green energy is produced by relationship-specific assets that are vulnerable to hold-up if contracts are not strictly enforced. I study the role of counterparty risk in the procurement of green energy using data on the universe of solar procurement auctions in India. The Indian context allows clean estimates of how risk affects procurement, because solar power plants set up in the same states, by the same firms, are procured in auctions variously intermediated by either risky states themselves or the central government. I find that: (i) the counterparty risk of an average state increases solar energy prices by 10%; (ii) …
The U.S.-Mexico Border And Housing Prices: Understanding The Impact Of Border Fencing On Property Values, Mary Jane Macarthur
The U.S.-Mexico Border And Housing Prices: Understanding The Impact Of Border Fencing On Property Values, Mary Jane Macarthur
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Building a barrier on the US-Mexico border has been a hot-button issue for a couple of decades. Not only do people disagree on the effectiveness of walls and fences, but there has also been debate on whether they generate positive or negative externalities on localities. Using data on construction of the US-Mexico border fence, as well as housing data for Yuma County, Arizona, I attempt to identify the treatment effect of fence construction on nearby housing prices, which may serve as an indicator of some of the external impacts of walls and fences. Mine is the first study to quantify …
Nonlinear Pricing With Finite Information, Dirk Bergemann, Edmund M. Yeh, Jinkun Zhang
Nonlinear Pricing With Finite Information, Dirk Bergemann, Edmund M. Yeh, Jinkun Zhang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We analyze nonlinear pricing with finite information. We consider a multi-product environment where each buyer has preferences over a d-dimensional variety of goods. The seller is limited to offering a finite number n of d-dimensional choices. The limited menu reflects a finite communication capacity between the buyer and seller. We identify necessary conditions that the optimal finite menu must satisfy, for either the socially efficient or the revenue-maximizing mechanism. These conditions require that information be bundled, or "quantized," optimally. We introduce vector quantization and establish that the losses due to finite menus converge to zero at a rate …

Financial Market Integration In Latin America, Obed Fernando Izaguirre Lozano
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is entitled ’Financial Market Integration in Latin America" and consists of two empirical studies. The first chapter is called ’Financial Market Integration between Latin America and the US". This empirical analysis focuses on the comovement between the US and major Latin American countries around free trade agreements. The results show that comovement thus financial integration has increased after the trade agreements for all the countries except for Brazil. The studied sector indices show that countries that have a free trade agreement with the US showed an increase in integration among sectors. The second empirical study is called ’The …
Catalysts And Impediments To Tax Increment Finance In Tulsa’S Historical African American Neighborhood, Bria A. Dixon
Catalysts And Impediments To Tax Increment Finance In Tulsa’S Historical African American Neighborhood, Bria A. Dixon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis assesses how Tulsa, Oklahoma grew to utilize tax increment financing (TIF) to produce economic activity in Tulsa’s historic downtown area. Specifically, how the creation, history, and maintenance of ONEOK Field, a $60 million, 6,000-seat sports venue in Tulsa’s historically African American neighborhood became the catalyst for Tulsa’s current TIF policy. In examining the fiscal outcomes of ONEOK Field, this thesis finds implications for inequitable investment in and around Tulsa’s Greenwood TIF district

Police Spending And Crime Rates: Evidence From U.S. Cities, 1985 – 2010, Daniel Padrick
Theses and Dissertations
Panel data covering the largest U.S. cities from 1985-2010 is used to reevaluate the endogeneity issue between policing and crime rates. Crime rates are not found to be a strong predictor of police spending, indicating that reverse causality is not as severe an issue as frequently thought. Increases in police spending result in modest decreases in certain index crimes.

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to evaluate the effects of two farm-to-school programs, specifically the Field-to-Fork Multi-visit Program (N = 264) and the Field-to-Fork After-school Club (N = 56), on nutritional outcomes of elementary school students (third to fifth grade) from urban, diverse, and lower-income communities. Data were collected via self-report surveys measuring: (a) knowledge of recommendations for daily fruit and vegetable intake; (b) fruit and vegetable consumption; (c) knowledge of cooking a healthy recipe using vegetables; and (d) desire for farm fresh foods at school. Statistical analyses included McNemar’s and Wilcoxon signed rank tests. The …
Essays In Urban Economics, Benjamin Stutts
Essays In Urban Economics, Benjamin Stutts
Economics Theses and Dissertations
Chapter 1 examines how land use regulation affects residential segregation by income. Residential segregation by income severely limits access to opportunity for low-income households, restricting prospects of upward mobility. Land use regulations are one potential determinant of such segregation. However, establishing a causal link between such regulation and segregation faces two econometric challenges. First, regulation is potentially endogenous. Second, proper measurement of segregation is difficult. Concerning the first challenge, the prior literature relies on instrumental variables that may not be valid. Concerning the second challenge, the prior literature relies on measures that ignore the spatial dimension of segregation. This paper …

Curse Of Democracy: Evidence From The 21st Century, Yusuke Narita, Ayumi Sudo
Curse Of Democracy: Evidence From The 21st Century, Yusuke Narita, Ayumi Sudo
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Democracy is widely believed to contribute to economic growth and public health. However, we find that this conventional wisdom is no longer true and even reversed; democracy has persistent negative impacts on GDP growth since the beginning of this century. This finding emerges from five different instrumental variable strategies. Our analysis suggests that democracies cause slower growth through less investment, less trade, and slower value-added growth in manufacturing and services. For 2020, democracy is also found to cause more deaths from Covid-19.
Embodied Engineering : Gendered Labor, Food Security, And Taste In Twentieth-Century Mali, Laura Ann Twagira
Embodied Engineering : Gendered Labor, Food Security, And Taste In Twentieth-Century Mali, Laura Ann Twagira
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Foregrounding African women’s ingenuity and labor, this pioneering case study shows how women in rural Mali have used technology to ensure food security through the colonial period, environmental crises, and postcolonial rule.
By advocating for an understanding of rural Malian women as engineers, Laura Ann Twagira rejects the persistent image of African women as subjects without technological knowledge or access and instead reveals a hidden history about gender, development, and improvisation. In so doing, she also significantly expands the scope of African science and technology studies.
Using the Office du Niger agricultural project as a case study, Twagira argues that …

Greening The Archive: The Social Climate Of Cotton Manufacturing In The "Samuel Oldknow Papers, 1782-1924", Bernadette Myers, Melina Moe
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This article re-examines the records and correspondence of Samuel Oldknow, a late eighteenth century textile manufacturer, within the context of the environmental humanities. Oldknow’s papers, a portion of which are held at Columbia University, are most often used by economic historians to date the beginnings of the factory wage labor system. We highlight, instead, the environmental implications of Oldknow’s cotton enterprise by juxtaposing documents related to the global reach of Oldknow’s empire with evidence of his transformation of the local landscape of northern England. This process of re-scaling captures a sense of what we call the “social climate” of the …

The Cultural Transmission Of Trust Norms: Evidence From A Lab In The Field On A Natural Experiment, Elira Karaja, Jared Rubin
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
We conduct trust games in three villages in a northeastern Romanian commune. From 1775–1919, these villages were arbitrarily assigned to opposite sides of the Austrian and Ottoman/Russian border despite being located seven kilometers apart. This plausibly exogenous border assignment affected local institutions and late-18th century migration in a manner that likely also affected trust. Conditional on trust norms being affected by these centuries-old historical circumstances, our experimental design tests the degree to which such norms are transmitted intergenerationally. Consistent with theoretical predictions, we find that participants on the Austrian side that also have family roots in the village are indeed …
The Impact Of Select Buses On Taxi Ridership In Nyc, Sara Ahmed
The Impact Of Select Buses On Taxi Ridership In Nyc, Sara Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to measure the impact of select buses on taxi ridership in NYC. Due to the phased implementation of select buses in NYC, a difference-in-differences model was used. Taxi ridership on the M14A/M14D, M34, M79, and M15 bus routes was examined as the treatment group. The control group is the M100/M101 non-select bus route that runs along Lexington and Amsterdam Avenue. The results from this model show that the M14A/M14D, M34, and M79 select buses had a negative statistically significant impact on taxi ridership. The M15 select bus had a positive statistically insignificant impact on …

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers
Over the past decade, rising youth use of e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has prompted aggressive regulation by state and local governments. Between 2010 and 2019, ten states and two large counties adopted ENDS taxes. Applying a continuous treatment difference-in-differences approach to data from two large national datasets (Monitoring the Future and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System), this study explores the impact of ENDS taxes on youth tobacco use. We find that ENDS taxes reduce youth e-cigarette consumption, with estimated e-cigarette tax elasticities of -0.06 to -0.21. However, we estimate sizable positive cigarette cross-tax elasticities, suggesting …

Different Strokes For Different Folks: Long Memory And Roughness, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Different Strokes For Different Folks: Long Memory And Roughness, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
SMU Economics and Statistics Working Paper Series
The log realized volatility of financial assets is often modeled as an autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average model (ARFIMA) process, denoted by ARFIMA(p, d, q), with p = 1 and q = 0. Two conflicting results have been found in the literature regarding the dynamics. One stream shows that the data series has a long memory (i.e., the fractional parameter d > 0) with strong mean reversion (i.e., the autoregressive coefficient |α1| ≈ 0). The other stream suggests that the volatil-ity is rough (i.e., d < 0) with highly persistent dynamic (i.e., α1 → 1). To consolidate the findings, this paper first examines the finite sample properties of alternative estimation methods employed in the literature for the ARFIMA(1, d, 0) model and then applies the outperforming techniques to a wide range of financial assets. The candidate methods include two parametric maximum likeli-hood (ML) methods (the maximum time-domain modified profile likelihood (MPL) and maximum frequency-domain likelihood) and two semiparametric methods (the local Whittle method and log periodogram estimation method). The two parametric methods work well across all parameter set-tings, with the MPL method outperforming. In contrast, the two semiparametric methods have a very large upward bias for d and an equally large downward bias for α1 when α1 is close to unity. The poor performance of the semiparametric methods in the presence of a highly persistent dynamic might lead to a false conclusion of long memory. In the empirical applications, we find that the log realized volatilities of exchange rate futures over the past decade have a long memory, where the point estimate of d is between 0.4 and 0.5 and the estimate of α1 is near zero. For other finan-cial assets considered (including stock indices and industry indices), we find that they have rough volatility, with the point estimate of d being negative and the point estimates of α1 close to unity.
Efficient Bilateral Trade Via Two-Stage Mechanisms Under One-Sided Asymmetric Information, Takashi Kunimoto, Cuiling Zhang
Efficient Bilateral Trade Via Two-Stage Mechanisms Under One-Sided Asymmetric Information, Takashi Kunimoto, Cuiling Zhang
SMU Economics and Statistics Working Paper Series
This paper considers a bilateral-trade model with one-sided asymmetric information in which one agent (seller) initially owns an indivisible object and is fully informed of its value, while the other agent (buyer) intends to obtain the object whose value is unknown to himself. As Jehiel and Pauzner (2006) show that no mechanisms can generally result in efficient, voluntary bilateral trades, we aim to overturn this impossibility result by employing two-stage mechanisms (Mezzetti (2004)) in which first, the outcome (e.g., allocation of the goods) is determined, then the agents observe their own outcome-decision payoffs, and finally, transfers are made. We show …

Greek Myth Or Fact? The Role Of Greek Houses In Alcohol And Drug Violations On American Campuses, Manu Raghav, Timothy Diette
Economics and Management Faculty publications
Greek-letter student social groups, better known as fraternities and sororities, are a ubiquitous feature on many American higher education campuses. These organizations, especially fraternities, have a reputation for encouraging unruly and improper behavior among both members and non-members. This paper investigates the effect of the degree of prevalence of these Greek organizations at a campus, as measured by the percentage of students who are members of fraternities and sororities, on the instances of liquor and drug law violations on campuses, as measured by the number of arrests for liquor and drug laws violations. Using a unique dataset, which combines data …

Economic management is the rules, policies, procedures and skills deployed to manage the resources, finances, income, and expenditure of a community, business enterprise or a whole country. The major instruments of economic management are the fiscal and economic development policies normally outlined in the countries budget by the President. The failure to achieve the stated objectives in the fiscal and monetary policies are the major challenges faced by less developed and developing countries of the world. This is because of frequent fluctuations in macro-prices particularly interest, wage and exchange rates. The resultant effects of the movement of these prices are …

Conjectures Of English And Uk Economic Surplus, Investment, Tax Revenues And Deficit Amounts From The 13th To The 19th Century, Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This paper attempts to estimate trends in the levels of economic surplus, public and private investment, and national government surpluses and deficits from accumulated capital income, taxation, and rents estimated by different economic historians for England and the UK. The data support historical accounts that income per capita growth begins to increase around the 1600s in Britain perhaps due to the level of capital, tax, and land income achieving an adequate threshold amount. According to some historians, this would also be about the time of capitalism’s ascent as the dominant economic system in England. Even then, dramatic increases in investment …
Measuring Fiscal Interactions In Local Federalism: Evidence From Florida, Kevin Willardsen
Measuring Fiscal Interactions In Local Federalism: Evidence From Florida, Kevin Willardsen
Economics Faculty Publications
Local governments react to one another in expenditure. However, the existing literature concerning these reactions suffer from one of three problems: timing dynamics, county behaviour, or over aggregation. City‐to‐city interaction estimates are shown to shrink up to 50% when appropriately dealing with dynamics and county behaviour using a dynamic spatial Durbin model with a maximum likelihood estimator. Expenditure disaggregation shows that the majority of categories have no spillover. One category, general government expenditure, is responsible for nearly all of the variation. This finding does not fit well with the existing theories for spatial interaction.

Credence-goods experiments have focused on stylized settings in which experts can perfectly identify the buyer’s best option and that option works without fail. However, in nature credence goods involve uncertainties that complicate assessing the quality of service and advice. We introduce two sources of uncertainty into a credence goods experiment. The first is diagnostic uncertainty; experts receive a noisy signal of buyer type so might make an ‘honest’ mistake when advising what is in buyers’ best interests. The second is service uncertainty; the services available to the buyer do not always work. Both sources of uncertainty make detection of expert …

Three Keys Of Development: Knowledge, Efficiency And Innovative Entrepreneurship, Irfan Kalayci, Ali Soylu, Baris Aytekin
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
The change in the structure and composition of production factors have always been occurred in the world production history. The competition between sectors and also within each sub-sector that comprise them continues. In this sense, competition has always fed change, transformation and progress. The process phenomenon is the change and transformation movements that occur in the production processes that economies focus on. In this respect, the classification steps emphasize this development. In this study, we discuss economic groups (resource-oriented, productivity-oriented, and innovation-oriented) in terms of drivers of economic development (knowledge, efficiency, innovative entrepreneurship, and productivity). The 3rd Industrial Revolution starting …

Entrepreneurship is a scarce factor of production in the economy like labor and capital; it is a business area which is culture and finance related. Turkey is an average country in the entrepreneurship world league. This negative situation in terms of entrepreneurship also continues in terms of innovation and innovative entrepreneurship. Although Turkey is counted among the world's GDP in the rich, in terms of the capacity to innovate is among the poorest. This paper discusses how Turkey can change this "reverse fortune" through developing an internal innovation culture and opening this culture to the outside world. Naturally, the ongoing …

Sales Capture Patterns Among Nebraska Counties, Eric Thompson, Spencer Cook
Business in Nebraska
Sales capture, the share of local spending power that is captured by area businesses, is an important measure of economic activity. Greater sales capture, which is typically measured using data on local taxable sales, creates multiple benefits for the economy. 1. EMPLOYMENT: Greater sales capture means more employment in retailers, wholesalers, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses subject to sales tax. 2. TAX REVENUE: Taxable sales are an important part of the tax base of many city governments. 3. QUALITY OF LIFE: Retail and hospitality (restaurants, lodging, amusement, and recreation) businesses account for a significant share of taxable sales. These industries …
