The Legalization Of Street Vending In Los Angeles: Exploring The Impact On Vendors And Their Livelihoods, Karen Alpuche Caceres
The Legalization Of Street Vending In Los Angeles: Exploring The Impact On Vendors And Their Livelihoods, Karen Alpuche Caceres
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis aims to unpack the impact the legalization of street vending and the subsequent regulation had on sidewalk vendors. Although legalization occurred state-wide through Senate Bill 946 in September of 2017, the rules and regulations for vending were passed at a city-level, and I am focusing on the City of Los Angeles specifically. Through interviews with government officials, non-profit partners and advocates, and vendors from different parts of the City, I analyze information around the policy itself, its history, and the impact it has and is expected to have on vendors and their businesses. While vendors have been central …
Counterfactuals With Latent Information, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris
Counterfactuals With Latent Information, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We describe a methodology for making counterfactual predictions when the information held by strategic agents is a latent parameter. The analyst observes behavior which is rationalized by a Bayesian model in which agents maximize expected utility given partial and differential information about payoff-relevant states of the world. A counterfactual prediction is desired about behavior in another strategic setting, under the hypothesis that the distribution of and agents’ information about the state are held fixed. When the data and the desired counterfactual prediction pertain to environments with finitely many states, players, and actions, there is a finite dimensional description of the …
Endogenous Beliefs And Institutional Structure In Competitive Equilibrium With Adverse Selection, Gerald David Jaynes
Endogenous Beliefs And Institutional Structure In Competitive Equilibrium With Adverse Selection, Gerald David Jaynes
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
I model financial markets that structure decision-making into discrete points separating contract offers, applications, and acceptance/denial decisions. Endogenous beliefs about applicants’ risk types emerge as the institutional process extracts private information allowing uninformed firms to infer risk qualities by comparing applications of many consumers. Endogenous beliefs and low-risk consumer behavior render truthful disclosure of transactions incentive compatible supporting a unique equilibrium robust to cream-skimming and cross-subsidizing deviations, even under Hellwig’s “secret” policy assumption. In equilibrium each type demands low-risk’s optimal pooling policy and high-risk supplement to full coverage at fair-price. Nonpassive consumers’ belief firms are sequentially rational necessary for equilibrium; …
Misinterpreting Others And The Fragility Of Social Learning, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yuhta Ishii
Misinterpreting Others And The Fragility Of Social Learning, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yuhta Ishii
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We exhibit a natural environment, social learning among heterogeneous agents, where even slight misperceptions can have a large negative impact on long-run learning outcomes. We consider a population of agents who obtain information about the state of the world both from initial private signals and by observing a random sample of other agents’ actions over time, where agents’ actions depend not only on their beliefs about the state but also on their idiosyncratic types (e.g., tastes or risk attitudes). When agents are correct about the type distribution in the population, they learn the true state in the long run. By …

Relations Between Young Adults’ Knowledge And Understanding, Experiences, And Information Behavior In Personal Finance Matters, Manuel Förster, Roland Happ, William Walstad
Relations Between Young Adults’ Knowledge And Understanding, Experiences, And Information Behavior In Personal Finance Matters, Manuel Förster, Roland Happ, William Walstad
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
Background: In Germany, general secondary education offers few opportunities for young adults to acquire knowledge and understanding of personal finance. Hence, apart from parents’ influence as role models, important influences on young adults’ financial knowledge and understanding likely include their personal experience with financial products and their behavior of informally seeking information about specific financial products.
Methods: In this paper, we investigate the relationships between these latter variables based on a sample of 1108 young adults from Germany, aged 17–25, beginning their studies in higher education. Knowledge and understanding of personal finance was assessed using the German adaptation of the …

Women In The Early Years Of The American Economic Association: A Membership Beyond The Professoriate Per Se, Ann Mari May, Robert W. Dimand
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
The records in the archives of the American Economic Association (AEA) located in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Duke University, offer us a unique window into the role of gender in the struggle of economists to gain status and authority and allow us to better understand the role of gender in the professionalization of economics. While not replete with information about female economists in the early years of the AEA, the records offer important clues as to the challenges facing women academics, shed light on the formation of the profession, and reveal the influence of the …

Condensed Abstract
Climate is changing globally and its impacts can arise at different levels of biological organization; yet, cross-level consequences of climate change are still poorly understood. Designing effective environmental management and adaptation plans requires implementation of mechanistic models that span the biological hierarchy. Because biological systems are inherently complex and dynamic in nature, dealing with complexities efficiently necessitates simplification of systems or approximation of relevant processes, but there is little consensus on mathematical approaches to scale from genes to populations. Here we present an effort that aims to bring together groups that often do not interact, but that are …

Multiattribute Utility Theory (MAUT) is used to structure decisions with more than one factor (attribute) in play. These decisions become complex when the attributes are dependent on one another. Where linear modeling is concerned with how factors are directly related or correlated with each other, MAUT is concerned with how a decision maker …

Impact Of Women's Education On Marriage Outcomes, Nattamon Ungpraphakorn
Impact Of Women's Education On Marriage Outcomes, Nattamon Ungpraphakorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In Thailand, marriage has been one of many women’s aspirations. However, nowadays women’s labor force participation has increased, and women have become more economically independent as a result of higher education attainment. An important question is whether these factors lead to an older age of marriage or even a choice remaining single. This paper analyzes how women’s education affects the marriage outcome and studies single women’s perspective towards marriage. Using data from survey of 422 women between the age of 22 and 60, we estimate the logistic regression of marriage outcome. We find that older women tend to remain single …

How Does The Thai Stock Market Respond To Monetary And Fiscal Policy Shocks?, Suthawan Prukumpai, Yuthana Sethapramote
How Does The Thai Stock Market Respond To Monetary And Fiscal Policy Shocks?, Suthawan Prukumpai, Yuthana Sethapramote
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study examines the impacts of monetary and fiscal policy on the Thai stock market using the structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) model. In addition to the data on the market aggregate level, we also consider the response of stock prices at the sectoral level. The empirical results show that the Thai stock market significantly responds to both monetary policy and fiscal policy. However, monetary policy has stronger effects on both real output and stock prices than those of fiscal policy. Fiscal policy shocks affect the stock market only for the next two to three quarters. In addition, sector indices wereused …

Legal Setbacks, Disbursement Sudden Stops, And Fiscal Stimulus: An Empirical Characterization Of A Recent Philippine Fiscal Experience, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Mariel Monica R. Sauler
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Recognizing the importance of expanding fiscal spending programs and improving disbursement rates, the Aquino administration implemented the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) in 2011. Acting as a fiscal stimulus but packing a fiscal surprise, the program has reportedly succeeded in improving fiscal expenditure performance until the Supreme Court stopped it based on constitutional grounds. While there were official claims that it was effective in spurring growth, no study has been offered to investigate plausible mechanisms leading to expansions in output. This study proposes the use ofa dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE)model to stochastically simulate and compute simple fiscal multipliers to understand …
Time-Varying Weather Effects On Thai Government Bond Returns, Anya Khanthavit
Time-Varying Weather Effects On Thai Government Bond Returns, Anya Khanthavit
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study proposed a state-space model that allows time-varying weather effects on asset returns. It resolves the model misspecification of the unrealistic, fixed effect assumption commonly made by previous weather studies. The model was applied to examine the weather effects on Thai government bond returns from July 2, 2001, to December 30, 2015. Kalman filtering was used in the estimation. The study found that the weather effects were time-varying. They were wandering in the early sample period but disappearing in the later period. The effects were not co-integrated with the market’s inefficiency levels.
Selective Mortality And Malnutrition In India, Pallavi Panda
Selective Mortality And Malnutrition In India, Pallavi Panda
School of Business
India presents itself as a paradox with low infant mortality and high malnutrition. This paper provides survival bias as an explanation of the paradox. Using pooled health surveys from 1993 to 2005 and a pseudo-panel selection model, this study finds that the change in Height-for-Age Z-Scores (HAZ scores) can be explained by mortality selection. Specifically, children with sample average characteristics that survive have 17.4% less HAZ scores than a child randomly drawn from the population indicating an overestimation of malnutrition in India. This is consistent with the hypothesis of weaker children surviving due to skilled delivery which pulls down the …

The Effect Of Outward Foreign Direct Investment On Exports In Japan During The Lost Decade, 1985-2005, Alexandros Ladas
Dissertations and Theses
This study will utilize an OLS analysis of the panel data coming from various databases such as the World Bank, Federal Reserve and etc. to determine if there exists a significant correlation between the exports of Japan and its foreign direct investment (FDI) in the period of 1985-2005 with nearby trading partners of which include the countries of ASEAN, China and South Korea. In addition, a selection of supplemental factors will be used to determine if they also possess any significance with exports. These factors include: the exchange rate of the Japanese yen with the currency of the trading partner …

The Role Of Quality Education In The Economic Development Of Mexico, Betzayra Perez
The Role Of Quality Education In The Economic Development Of Mexico, Betzayra Perez
CMC Senior Theses
Mexico’s education system ranks among the lowest in terms of quality and achievement levels. Given the importance of education for a country’s economic development, it is crucial to understand how improvements in Mexico’s education quality can result in economic growth for the country. This thesis aims to create awareness about how the quality of learning rather than total schooling can result in improving Mexico’s economic development. First, a general literature review provides significant findings of the quality of education, the difference between learning and schooling, and educational equity, and its effects on economic development. Moreover, a detailed overview of the …
Are Cds Auctions The Tail Wagging The Dog? An Empirical Study Of Corporate Bond Return Volatility At The Time Of Default, Jennifer Mace
Are Cds Auctions The Tail Wagging The Dog? An Empirical Study Of Corporate Bond Return Volatility At The Time Of Default, Jennifer Mace
CMC Senior Theses
Over the past decade, numerous engineered credit events and cases of market participants manipulating bond prices to influence Credit Default Swap (CDS) auction payouts have occurred. These cases have become increasingly common, and the CFTC has stated they may constitute market manipulation and undermine not only the CDS market but also the credit derivative and default markets. Although there is a plethora of news and media coverage on publicized cases, there is no previous empirical research on evidence of these practices. This paper is motivated by the desire to determine if there is indirect evidence of bond price manipulation around …
The Impacts Of Supra-Regional Multi-Resort Season Passes: A Hedonic Pricing Model Of Single-Day Lift Tickets For Us Ski Areas, Sijia Lai
CMC Senior Theses
Numerous media analyses claim that supra-regional multi-resort season passes (mega passes) are negatively impacting skiing, snowboarding, and winter-sport communities. In particular, media claims that ski areas on these season passes are charging higher single-day lift ticket prices to nudge people to buy their season pass products. To test this claim, I use a hedonic pricing model to estimate the impact of season passes on adult single-day lift ticket prices. By applying OLS regressions to a dataset of 302 US ski areas for the winter of 2018-19, I find that the ski areas on the leading season passes (Ikon and Epic …
The Fall Of The 10-K Report: Measuring The Impact Of Accounting Ratios On Financial Performance, Matthew Daruty
The Fall Of The 10-K Report: Measuring The Impact Of Accounting Ratios On Financial Performance, Matthew Daruty
CMC Senior Theses
The annual 10-K report has historically been the most important aspect in assessing the position of a publicly held company. However, as the flow of information has increased with the dawn of new technologies, less and less attention has been paid to these audited financial statements. In order to assess if investors are still reacting to the information contained in the annual report, this paper examines the relationship between accounting ratios and stock price in banks traded on United States stock exchanges. By examining accounting ratios instead of simply looking at Earnings Per Share, new information was revealed regarding what …

First Movers In Marijuana: Tourism Boom Or Bust?, Henry Klyce Minervini
CMC Senior Theses
In 2014, Colorado and Washington legalized the cultivation, sale, and consumption of recreational marijuana for anyone over the age of 21. In doing so, the two states presented the first opportunities for marijuana-specific tourism in the United States. Direct benefits of legalization to these first movers, namely tax revenues generated through the sale of marijuana, have been quantified, but the indirect benefits in the tourism sector are as of yet unquantified. Although there is a large body of informal literature and popular media on marijuana tourism, academic study of the subject is scant. Working with a panel composed of 47 …
