Essays On The Impact Of Parents' Investment And School Curriculum On Educational Outcomes In China, Han Yu
Essays On The Impact Of Parents' Investment And School Curriculum On Educational Outcomes In China, Han Yu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two essays studying how students’ educational outcomes are affected by parents’ investment and school curriculum, which are two of the most important determinants of students’ educational performance, respectively. Specifically, in chapter 2, I investigate whether Chinese children born in the auspicious years of Dragon perform better than their comparable peers in school. Using three recently collected datasets from China, I find that students born in the years of the Dragon indeed outperformed their peers in study. I furtherly test the possible mechanisms for the better performance of the “Dragons” in school. The results suggest that parents’ …
Social Entrepreneurship In China: Driving Institutional Change, Tonia Warnecke
Social Entrepreneurship In China: Driving Institutional Change, Tonia Warnecke
Faculty Publications
In the aftermath of the Great Recession, the concern with exclusionary and unethical business practices has led to the growing popularity of social entrepreneurship, which focuses on the creation of social value, not wealth. In this article, I reflect on social entrepreneurship in China, a unique context given the strong Communist party leadership and the transition to a market economy. To begin, I discuss the legal and political framework for social entrepreneurship in China, followed by an overview of the sector’s characteristics, including age, size, social issues emphasized, leader characteristics, and the role of women. Next, I provide examples of …

Moderate Growth With A Stronger Industrial Sector, Eric Thompson
Moderate Growth With A Stronger Industrial Sector, Eric Thompson
Business in Nebraska
Nebraska will record solid economic growth during the forecast period but will lag U.S. growth. While Nebraska’s large farming sector has stabilized, it will not contribute much to economic growth during the forecast period. Job growth also will be sluggish in transportation, retail trade and state and local government. Job growth, however, will be stronger in the services, finance, manufacturing and construction. Projected growth rates for 2018 to 2020 are presented in Table 1.
Employment will grow by 0.8% to 1.0% per year, below the national rate. Non-farm income will grow between 3.6% and 3.8% each year. This growth is …
The Effects O F Financial Education On Short-Term And Long-Term Financial Behaviors, Jamie Wagner, William B. Walstad
The Effects O F Financial Education On Short-Term And Long-Term Financial Behaviors, Jamie Wagner, William B. Walstad
Economics Faculty Publications
This study investigates how financial education in high school, college, or in the workplace affects the short‐ and long‐term financial behaviors of adults using the 2015 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS) data. Financial education appears to have generally insignificant effects on short‐term behaviors for which there is regular feedback and penalties, and thus greater opportunity for learning by doing. If consumers do not pay off their credit card bill, they get a monthly statement showing interest charges and penalties. Financial education appears to have more positive and stronger effects on long‐term behaviors with less timely feedback, and for which the …
Globalization, Conflict, And The Effects Of The Rate Of Change Of Globalization: An Empirical Analysis, Ashley Stephens
Globalization, Conflict, And The Effects Of The Rate Of Change Of Globalization: An Empirical Analysis, Ashley Stephens
Honors Projects
The world is becoming increasingly more interconnected with technological advances leading to more and more globalization. It is important to see how globalization affects society, especially in the lesser developed post-conflict regions of Africa. The theories of liberalism, Marxism, and realism all offer plausible, yet strikingly different theories on the relationship between globalization and conflict. This paper conceptually examines the dominant theories of globalization and conflict, then uses open-source panel data on globalization and conflict in Africa to empirically test which theory is supported by the data, then tests if there is a correlation between the rate of globalization and …
Ideological Positions Of Hispanic College Students In The Rio Grande Valley: Using A Two-Dimensional Model To Account For Domestic Policy Preference, William Greene, Mi-Son Kim
Ideological Positions Of Hispanic College Students In The Rio Grande Valley: Using A Two-Dimensional Model To Account For Domestic Policy Preference, William Greene, Mi-Son Kim
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
While a good amount of research has been conducted regarding the voting behavior of Hispanics in the United States, there is a dearth of analysis of the underlying ideologies of members of this ethnic group, especially in contrast to their partisan self-identifications. This is especially true of one particular sub-category: Hispanics along the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, of whom a majority consistently vote Democrat, but whose personal values would seem to make them a natural constituency for issue positions associated with the Republican Party (Garrett, 2010). The goal of this study is to analyze the ideological positions of …

Projected Economic And Financial Benefits Of The 2017 Summer Universiade Games, Steve Chen, Teame Ghirmay, Yi-Hua Lee, Chie-Der Dongfang, Tsung-Chih Chiu
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
In Western society, sport economic impact studies are often utilized to showcase the financial benefits for hosting mega sport event or to justify the spending for entering bids or covering infrastructure construction costs. This study projected economic impact of the 2017 Summer Universiade by examining the Taiwanese (the hosting country) residents’ willingness to attendance and estimated individual spending (consumption) while attending the games. Through a series of convenience sampling surveys from February to April, 2017, 1,021 respondents (53.5% males and 45.3% females) reported their potential personal spending, willingness to attend the events, and preferred ticket price range. The results indicated …
Implicit Regional Economic Goals And Objectives: A Study Of U.S. Development Programs, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, Eric Bowen
Implicit Regional Economic Goals And Objectives: A Study Of U.S. Development Programs, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, Eric Bowen
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
At the present time, U.S. regional economic development policies tend to be focused on sectors, infrastructure, human capital, innovation capability, or to be problem oriented, and only a few programs can be described as being place-based. In this paper, we are looking at major federal regional development programs to deduce their combined implicit place-based goals and objectives. Because the U.S. seems to be relatively unique among OECD countries in its scant use of place-based policies, we compare the United States to, in particular, Canada to gain further insights into the reasons for and potential effects of such policy differences.
Western Washington Elk-Hunting: Analyzing Willingness To Pay And Economic Benefits, Alex Donka
Western Washington Elk-Hunting: Analyzing Willingness To Pay And Economic Benefits, Alex Donka
Honors Projects
This study will attempt to establish an estimate of willingness to pay for elk hunted in Western Washington, with the intent of informing policymakers on the potential economic benefit of elk hunting in the state. The research uses travel cost analysis to estimate variable cost associated with hunting, and controls for macroeconomic fluctuations in hunting demand as well as quality metrics for the specific GMUs in question. The study found that expected willingness to pay for an elk hunting trip in 2013-2015 was approximately $140, which is a lower-bound estimation of expenditures and hunter utility. The study’s findings support the …
Understanding The Decline Of U.S. Manufacturing Employment, Susan N. Houseman
Understanding The Decline Of U.S. Manufacturing Employment, Susan N. Houseman
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
U.S. manufacturing experienced a precipitous and historically unprecedented decline in employment in the 2000s. Many economists and other analysts—pointing to decades of statistics showing that manufacturing real (inflation-adjusted) output growth has largely kept pace with private sector real output growth, that productivity growth has been much higher, and that the sector’s share of aggregate employment has been declining—argue that manufacturing’s job losses are largely the result of productivity growth (assumed to reflect automation) and are part of a long-term trend. Since the 1980s, however, the apparently robust growth in manufacturing real output and productivity have been driven by a relatively …

The New Financial Framework For The Cuban Non-State Sector, Pavel Vidal, P.V. Viswanath
The New Financial Framework For The Cuban Non-State Sector, Pavel Vidal, P.V. Viswanath
Faculty Working Papers and Articles
A cornerstone of the current Cuban economic model reforms is its opening to the non-state small-scale sector. Using the results of a survey of non-state businesses, we look at the provision of financial services to the small- and medium-sized enterprises in the non-state sector from two perspectives: first, the nature of the new credit regulations and bank policies and how they accomplish the evaluation of credit to a hitherto non-existent sector; and second, how these small business clients view their relationship with their lender state banks. We look at Cuba from the perspective of a socialist economy in transition and …

The Housing Crisis In Puerto Rico And The Impact Of Hurricane Maria, Jennifer Hinojosa, Edwin Melendez
The Housing Crisis In Puerto Rico And The Impact Of Hurricane Maria, Jennifer Hinojosa, Edwin Melendez
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
By all counts, Puerto Rico’s housing market is in a deep and prolonged crisis. At least 18 percent of Puerto Rico’s housing stock is vacant as a result of the island’s prolonged economic recession, which commenced in 2006, and the spike in foreclosures after Hurricane Maria suggests that vacant units are increasing at an accelerated rate. Puerto Rico’s economic recession led to depopulation and the loss of jobs, which induced a decline of home equity values and an increase in foreclosures. More recently, Puerto Rico’s housing stock has been damaged due to Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island on September …

Congenital Chagas Disease In The United States: Cost Savings Through Maternal Screening, Eileen Stillwaggon, Victoria Perez-Zetune, Stephanie R. Bialek, Susan P. Montgomery
Economics Faculty Publications
Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted by insect vectors through transfusions, transplants, insect feces in food, and from mother to child during gestation. Congenital infection could perpetuate Chagas disease indefinitely, even in countries without vector transmission. An estimated 30% of infected persons will develop lifelong, potentially fatal, cardiac or digestive complications. Treatment of infants with benznidazole is highly efficacious in eliminating infection. This work evaluates the costs of maternal screening and infant testing and treatment of Chagas disease in the United States. We constructed a decision-analytic model to find the lower cost option, comparing costs of testing and …
Economic Growth And Credit In India, Charan Singh Ph.D., Subhash Bharadwaj Pemmaraju, Rohan Das
Economic Growth And Credit In India, Charan Singh Ph.D., Subhash Bharadwaj Pemmaraju, Rohan Das
International Review of Business and Economics
The interdependence between credit expansion and economic growth has been a subject of some debate. While some economists contest that the development of the financial system is a byproduct of economic growth others assert that credit expansion is critical for growth itself. India’s impetus on expanding its banking reach and recent changes in the way transactions are being done begs the question whether such changes directly affect the growth trajectory. This paper aims to examine and understand the relationship between credit and growth in India in the last few decades. Different metrics for credit and output is used to test …

International Trade, Trade Policy, And The Wto, Wei Jin
International Trade, Trade Policy, And The Wto, Wei Jin
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation comprises three papers that study the welfare impact of GATT/WTO, the effects of preference bias on trade flows and welfare, and the optimal trade policy with strategic interactions under a Ricardian model. The first chapter provides a comprehensive evaluation of the welfare impact of GATT/WTO in its entire history of 1950-2015 for 180 countries. The analysis embeds non-parametric matching methods in structural quantitative simulations. The results indicate substantial (but highly heterogeneous) welfare gains created by GATT/WTO at the global level and across more than six decades of its history. An extensive set of robustness checks with respect to …
Macroeconomic Implications Of Trade Diversification In Nigeria, Lukman O. Oyelami, Philip O. Alege
Macroeconomic Implications Of Trade Diversification In Nigeria, Lukman O. Oyelami, Philip O. Alege
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study seeks to examine the effects of trade diversification on macroeconomic performance in Nigeria. To achieve this, the study employs bound test of ARDL to determine the existence of cointegration between trade diversification and key macroeconomic variables. We further estimate the short-run and long-run effects of Intensive and Extensive trade diversification on Economic growth and exchange rate movements. The results from bound tests confirm co-integration between trade diversification and economic growth on one hand and trade diversification and exchange rate movements on the other hand. Similarly, the results from our estimations show that trade diversification can propel economic growth …

Estimating And Forecasting The Impact Of Inflation On Economic Growth In Nigeria Using Threshold Analysis, David O.K. Okoroafor, Sesan O. Adeniji, Timilehin Olasehinde
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study examined the causal relationship between inflation and economic growth as well as estimating threshold and forecasting of inflation in Nigeria for the period of 1961 – 2016. The study employed Granger causality test, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL), Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and a multivariate time series Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models. Granger causality test result showed that inflation does not granger cause economic growth and neither does economic growth granger cause inflation during the period of study. Using broad money supply to GDP as control variable, an inflation threshold of 14% -15% both in the short run and …
A Reassessment Of Money Demand In Nigeria, Moses K. Tule, Usman M. Okpanachi, Patrick Ogiji
A Reassessment Of Money Demand In Nigeria, Moses K. Tule, Usman M. Okpanachi, Patrick Ogiji
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper re-examines broad money (M2) demand and its stability in Nigeria using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing procedure. First, the results indicate that a stable long-run relationship exists between M2 and its determinants including GDP, stock prices, foreign interest rates and real exchange rate. Furthermore, stock prices showed a significant and positive effect on the long-run broad money demand, which in some ways reflect increased ‘financialization’3 and integration of the Nigerian economy into the global economic system. Overall, the findings of this study lend credence to the continued relevance of the broad money aggregate, M2, as a …
Modelling Volatility Persistence And Asymmetry Of Naira-Dollar Exchange Rate, Mutiu A. Oyinlola
Modelling Volatility Persistence And Asymmetry Of Naira-Dollar Exchange Rate, Mutiu A. Oyinlola
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper modelled the volatility persistence and asymmetry of naira-dollar exchange rate in interbank and Bureau de Change (BDC) using monthly data between January 2004 and November 2017. The study employed Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity [GARCH (1,1)], Threshold GARCH [TGARCH (1,1)] and Exponential GARCH [EGARCH (1,1)]. The results of Bai-Perron (2003) structural break identified two significant breaks in each market. Interestingly, the breaks, particularly for the interbank exchange rate(December, 2014 and January, 2015), seem to have coincided with the period of depreciation in the country’s exchange rate which could be linked to the precipitous movement in the international crude oil …

Exploring Millennials’ Motives In Media Class Preferences: Advertising Implications, Alexandra Hutto, W. Wossen Kassaye
International Review of Business and Economics
Millennials have become a preoccupation for marketers, especially as they enter their peak earning and spending life stages. This exploratory study represents a touchstone to the motivations, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors members of the millennial cohort, those born between 1980-2000, exhibited toward three major media classes (print, broadcast, and Internet). Forty-one millennials participated in a series of synchronous online focus groups administered through a learning management system (LMS), or focus group chats (FGCs) for short. This study compares millennials’ views toward traditional media (namely, television and newspapers) against the Internet with an emphasis on perceived advantages and disadvantages of each …

World over SMEs are playing a major role in the sphere of socio-economic enhancement of lives of millions. In India, the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) contribute 8 per cent to the country’s GDP, 45 per cent to the manufactured output and 40 per cent to the country’s exports. They provide employment to 101 million people through 45 million enterprises. As an employment generator, MSMEs are the second largest employment opportunity provider only behind the agriculture sector. The MSMEs also act as a catalyst for social change by helping reduce the income inequality among various social classes as also …

Exploring The Technological Frontier To Fuel Future Growth: Charting India’S Trajectory For Coming Decades, Abhith Pallegar
International Review of Business and Economics
The paper aims to discuss the world of fast-paced technology from a Darwinian standpoint and examines the technological choices made by countries and the impact of such choices on their economic growth. The paper explores how a country’s economic growth is dependent on the strategic technological choices they make. By clubbing together the fate of countries and companies, we intend to simplify the narrative and explore a few key aspects such as the diminishing relevance of competitive behavior and ways of adapting to and adopting new technologies to become an evolutionary driver in a technology-centric world. This review highlights the …
Foreign Aid Effectiveness In Ghana, Yaya Sissoko, Niloufer Sohrabji
Foreign Aid Effectiveness In Ghana, Yaya Sissoko, Niloufer Sohrabji
International Review of Business and Economics
Ghana has been the recipient of large levels of aid since the 1980s. This coincides with significant improvements in the country including increased growth and poverty reduction. We analyze the role of foreign aid in Ghana’s success. Using annual data from 1961 to 2012, we employ an error correction model to estimate the long-run relationship between aid and conditional aid in Ghana’s economic growth. We find that conditional aid has a positive and statistically significant impact on growth. Through an examination of Ghana over three phases with varying aid and conditionality, we conclude that Ghana’s success with conditional aid is …
