Effects Of Global Competitiveness, Human Development, And Corruption On Inward Foreign Direct Investment, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna L. Rhoades, Tom Griffin Jan 2013

Effects Of Global Competitiveness, Human Development, And Corruption On Inward Foreign Direct Investment, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna L. Rhoades, Tom Griffin

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this paper is to investigate which of Dunning's location-specific advantages of host countries, presented as composite indices for Global Competitiveness, Human Development and Corruption Perception, better predict the level of inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

A stepwise multiple regression method was applied on a sample of 129 countries, which was further divided into two subgroups: OECD members and non-OECD members. The study provides evidence that global competitiveness and the level of corruption of the host country are important determinants for inward FDI. For non-OECD countries the Human Development index appears to be an additional FDI determinant. More …

“Damning The Dams”: A Study Of Cost Benefit Analysis In Large Dams Through The Lens Of India's Sardar Sarovar Project, Evelyn Wong Jan 2013

“Damning The Dams”: A Study Of Cost Benefit Analysis In Large Dams Through The Lens Of India's Sardar Sarovar Project, Evelyn Wong

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines the evaluation of the economic, environmental and social effects of dams, and lessons learned from previous dams. It then focuses on cost benefit analysis as a decision-making tool pre-project for evaluating the potential gains and losses of building a dam; and as a framework for evaluating dams in operation. It reviews the basic assumptions required for a legitimate cost benefit analysis, and the inherent limitations of this method. It uses the Sardar Sarovar dam as a case study for the use and abuse of cost benefit analysis in decision-making, interstate politics, propaganda and activism. It also illustrates …

Water Governance In Bolivia: Policy Options For Pro-Poor Infrastructure Reform, Daniel M. Maxwell Jan 2013

Water Governance In Bolivia: Policy Options For Pro-Poor Infrastructure Reform, Daniel M. Maxwell

CMC Senior Theses

As the case with most countries across Latin America, unprecedented migration to urban areas has strained city infrastructure systems. More particularly, the region faces a pressing crisis of water security, where rapid urbanization has outpaced water sector development. This thesis addresses the water infrastructure reform in El Alto and La Paz, Bolivia, focusing on strategies to better promote water access for the peri-urban poor. The research investigates the level of progressivity of water service expansion and pricing regimes: in other words, does the present model of water distribution positively improve the lives of the poorest groups? By investigating these social …

Impact Estimates For Static Spatial Panel Data Models In R, Gianfranco Piras Jan 2013

Impact Estimates For Static Spatial Panel Data Models In R, Gianfranco Piras

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In the present note we demonstrate how to implement the Lee and Yu (2010) procedure for fixed effects spatial panel data models available from the R (R Development Core Team 2012) package splm (Millo and Piras 2012). Additionally, we also show how to compute the impact estimates introduced by Kelejian, Tavlas, and Hondroyiannis (2006) and formalized in LeSage and Pace (2009). Unlike Matlab (MATLAB 2011), there was no R function specific to static panel data models for the calculation of the impact measures. After receiving numerous requests from the users of splm, we decided to extend the cross sectional functions …

Narratives Of The European Crisis And The Future Of (Social) Europe, Philomila Tsoukala Jan 2013

Narratives Of The European Crisis And The Future Of (Social) Europe, Philomila Tsoukala

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article examines two distinct types of narratives prevalent in academic writing and popular press regarding the causes of the crisis in Europe. The first type, a morality tale, attributes the crisis to profligate southern states that refused to abide by the strictures of the Stability and Growth Pact. The second type is focused on the structural reasons for the crisis, emphasizing the nature of the European Union as a non-optimal currency area, and the euro as a factor in the creation of trade imbalances and competitiveness problems within the euro zone. Each type of narrative suggests a different type …

Resolving Conflicts In Capital Budgeting For Mutually Exclusive Projects With Time Disparity Differences Jan 2013

Resolving Conflicts In Capital Budgeting For Mutually Exclusive Projects With Time Disparity Differences

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

When two capital budgeting alternatives are mutually exclusive and have a time disparity of cash flows, a conflict may occur between the NPV and IRR for the two projects. One project may have a higher NPV and the other project may have a higher IRR. The indifference point is the crossover point for the two NPV’s in the NPV profile. If the reinvestment rate for future cash flows is above or below the crossover point, the project with the higher NPV at that point is preferred. This paper shows how to determine the crossover point in the NPV profile.

Teaching Mirr To Improve Comprehension Of Investment Performance Evaluation Techniques Jan 2013

Teaching Mirr To Improve Comprehension Of Investment Performance Evaluation Techniques

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

NPV and IRR are frequently used to evaluate investment performance, yet when they conflict many firms base capital budgeting decisions on IRR, though NPV is superior in specific cases. Teaching the MIRR technique should reinforce academia’s preference of the NPV technique. The reinvestment assumptions of NPV and IRR are implicit and hidden from students, while the calculation of the MIRR technique forces explicit decisions regarding the investment and discounting of interim cash flows. Thus, by teaching the MIRR calculation students may gain a better understanding of the differences between the three techniques reinforcing the primacy of NPV.

Carrots, Sticks, And Salience, Brian Galle Jan 2013

Carrots, Sticks, And Salience, Brian Galle

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Article considers the second-best design of Pigouvian taxes and subsidies in the presence of agents who are imperfectly aware of the instrument. Until very recently, the price instrument literature has assumed perfect rationality, and even the handful of prior attempts to account for “hidden” prices focus mainly on the income tax. I extend these efforts in several directions. First, I show that the best available instrument for correcting negative externalities is often one whose price is partially adjusted upwards -- or, in the case of subsidies, downwards -- to counter-act the neglect of irrational actors. In addition, I argue …

Contract Hope And Sovereign Redemption, Anna Gelpern Jan 2013

Contract Hope And Sovereign Redemption, Anna Gelpern

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Sovereign immunity has served as a partial substitute for bankruptcy protection, but it has encouraged a minority of creditors to pursue unorthodox legal remedies with spillover effects far beyond the debtor-creditor relationship. The attempt to enforce Argentina’s pari passu clause in New York is an example of such a remedy, which relies primarily on collateral damage to other creditors and market infrastructure to obtain settlement from a debtor that would not pay. The District Court decision, now on appeal before the Second Circuit, may not make holding out more attractive in future restructurings – but it would make participation less …

Pengaruh Konsentrasi Partai Politik Di Daerah Terhadap Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Daerah, Catur Sugiyanto, Budiono S. Handoko, Ilham Adinusa

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

In the Indonesia democracy, the multiparty system is used as one of the canal to aggregate the public aspirations. This mechanism is supported by Law No. 25/1999 about fiscal decentralization and a series of related regulations. It is also supported by direct election for regional head (Pilkada). As such, the winning political parties may influence the local government budget allocation which finally transform into the economic growth. This study estimates the influence of party politic concentration on the local economic growth. The data used is the local government election of 2004 and 2009 from 55 regions (cities). The concentration of …

To control supply and demand rice and increase income to farmer, Government assigned a rice purchasing policy. This study apply 2SLS model with time series data 1971-2009 to simulate and forecast the impact of rice purchasing policy on farmer welfare. The responses of rice real price at farmers' level towards the changes of real price of government purchases and rice production is elastic in the long term. Demand of rice is significantly influenced by the price of rice, population, and demand for rice at t - 1. The increasing of rice purchasing price (HPP) on grain at 9.54% and 15% …

Pengaruh Variabel Sosio-Demografis Terhadap Mobilitas Ulang-Alik Di Jabodetabek, Rotua Y. Warsida, Sri M. Adioetomo, Elda L. Pardede

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This study aims to explain the effect of socio-demographic variables i.e. sex, wage, employment status, and marital status on commuting in Jabodetabek. The result of binary logistic regression using Sakernas 2012 shows that male are more likely to commute than female. Male in formal sector have the highest probability to commute while by marital status, unmarried male have the highest probability to commute. The level of wage is positively related with the probability to commute although at certain level of wage, an increase in wage increases probability to commute among male lower than probability to commute among female.

Analisis Keseimbangan Eksternal Indonesia: Pendekatan Intertemporal Model Of Current Account, Nurmalindah Nurmalindah, Sugiharso Safuan

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Current account balance has an important role of measuring the direction and the amount of international loan. This study analyzes Indonesian external balance due to its solvency condition of external debt and sustainability of current account balance during 1970-2007 by intertemporal-model approach of current account. The results of cointegration test and bivariate autoregressive (VAR) indicate that solvency condition holds, but not for the sustainability condition of current account balance. It means that Indonesia has capability to payback its external debt.

Effects Of Increased Variety On Demand, Pricing, And Welfare, William C. Horrace, Rui Hang, Jeffrey M. Perloff Jan 2013

Effects Of Increased Variety On Demand, Pricing, And Welfare, William C. Horrace, Rui Hang, Jeffrey M. Perloff

Center for Policy Research

We use order statistics to analytically derive demand functions when consumers choose from among the varieties of two brands—such as Coke and Pepsi—and an outside good. Soft-drinks have no price variability across varieties within a brand, so traditional demand systems (e.g., mixed logit) are not identified. In contrast, our demand system is identified and can be estimated using a nonlinear instrumental variable estimator. Our demand functions are higher-order polynomials, where the polynomial order is increasing in variety. Because these demand curves have convex and concave sections around an inflection point, firms are more likely to respond and make large price …

2013 Conference Report: The Social Practice Of Human Rights, Mark Ensalaco Jan 2013

2013 Conference Report: The Social Practice Of Human Rights, Mark Ensalaco

Human Rights Program Documents

Universities have new importance in the global human rights movement.

This was the resounding message the University of Dayton heard at its global conference on human rights advocacy in October 2013. The human rights movement is experiencing dramatic changes. Dynamic new NGOs in the global South are resetting the human rights agenda. Popular movements inspired by human rights ideals are arising around the world to demand justice. New information technologies are creating the possibility of real global solidarity. The movement must adapt. Human rights organizations must imagine new strategies to address poverty and other root causes of human rights violations. …

2013 Conference Brochure: Be A Part Of The Human Rights Movement's New Frontier, University Of Dayton Human Rights Center

Human Rights Program Documents

Why must we explore the social practice of human rights?

In the 65 years since the U.N.’s Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the human rights community has become a standard-bearer of normative behavior, influencing development and humanitarian organizations, multinational corporations and philanthropists. Though the movement is viewed as honorable and admirable, the certainty of its mission can inhibit introspection; a natural tendency is to prioritize rather than challenge prevailing assumptions.

Are the good intentions of human rights advocates enough? No. Research and dialogue can help propel the human rights community forward by facilitating introspection to improve both advocacy and action: …

Medicaid And Education: The Impact Of Medicaid Coverage On Children's Educational Trajectory, Melissa Atlas Jan 2013

Medicaid And Education: The Impact Of Medicaid Coverage On Children's Educational Trajectory, Melissa Atlas

Honors Papers

This paper examines the impact of Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) on children's educational progress, namely whether they are on track with their expected educational trajectory. It also examines cross-state variation in Medicaid policies and whether these different policies lead to different effects on the educational variable. With individual-level data from the Current Population Survey from years 1995 through 2006, along with information regarding each state's Medicaid policies, I seek to test the hypotheses that Medicaid/CHIP coverage will improve the likelihood of an individual being on track with his/her education and that states with qualitatively "better" …

An Evaluation Of Mergers In The U.S. Petroleum Industry, Matthew D. Capozzi Jan 2013

An Evaluation Of Mergers In The U.S. Petroleum Industry, Matthew D. Capozzi

Honors Papers

This paper analyzes the effects of mergers and acquisitions on the profitability of both participating firms and competitor firms in the U.S. petroleum industry. It also identifies distinct economic conditions and firm specific characteristics that are correlated with the performance of the firm and the merger. The span of the study reaches from 1995-2011. It incorporates four unique, yet characteristic mergers of the domestic petroleum industry. The paper finds evidence that mergers and acquisitions affect the profitability of participating firms positively and competitor firms negatively. This study also provides insight into how uniform mergers and acquisitions in this industry may …

Tarp: Indication Of A Potential Target? Evaluating Market To Book Ratios And Their Relationship To Tarp, Oscar Garcia Jan 2013

Tarp: Indication Of A Potential Target? Evaluating Market To Book Ratios And Their Relationship To Tarp, Oscar Garcia

Honors Papers

This paper examines to what extent banks with outstanding Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) debt are perceived as potential takeover targets. Each bank's price-to-tangible-book value is related to a series of fundamental bank ratios and market index as well as a series of TARP variables that capture if a bank took TARP and for how long. The results show that middle tiered banks (with assets between 500 million and 5 billion) are positively associated with retaining TARP, which may suggest they are perceived as takeover targets. In addition, banks with higher valuations have lower non-performing assets, net charge offs, loan …

The Effects Of Federal Reserve Liquidity Facilities On Inter-Bank Borrowing Rates, Isaac Green Jan 2013

The Effects Of Federal Reserve Liquidity Facilities On Inter-Bank Borrowing Rates, Isaac Green

Honors Papers

In the summer of 2007, stress in money markets created concern among economic policymakers. Fears of counter-party risk and concerns regarding the quality of bank collateral caused tremendous funding pressures for commercial and investment banks, which relied heavily on short-term borrowing. Initial attempts by the Federal Reserve to provide liquidity to banks and to alleviate strains in money markets through conventional monetary policy channels proved ineffective. After a sustained period of financial stress, the Federal Reserve introduced several programs in late 2007 and in early 2008 to address the liquidity needs of market participants. These programs were geared toward addressing …

Private Corrections, Public Implications: The Local Economic Effects Of Private Prisons, Charlotte Landes Jan 2013

Private Corrections, Public Implications: The Local Economic Effects Of Private Prisons, Charlotte Landes

Honors Papers

The coercive power of the state is unique among its responsibilities. And yet, like many government services, incarceration is becoming more widely privatized. These for-profit prisons market themselves as a solution to state-wide and local economic woes alike. Using standard regression analysis, I test the truth of these claims by exploring the relationship between privatized prisons and local economic health measured by county employment rate and income per capita. I find no significant relationship between the public/private nature of a prison and the employment rate, but there may be evidence of private prisons depressing county income. As we move forward …

An Investigation Into Crowd Out Phenomenon In Local Churches: Combining Experimental And Survey Methodology, Matthew Moench Jan 2013

An Investigation Into Crowd Out Phenomenon In Local Churches: Combining Experimental And Survey Methodology, Matthew Moench

Honors Papers

This paper presents the findings of an experimental investigation into crowd out phenomenon in an as yet unexplored sector of public goods provision: the local church. I develop an entirely new instrument for experimental investigation into crowd out, using a combination of both survey and experimental methodology. While the survey finds limited evidence for an aggregate crowd out effect due to taxation, the experimental treatments uncover no evidence of crowd out in local churches due to fiscal illusion.

Presidential Pay, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

Last month, the author wrote about athletes' pay relative to CEOs' pay and he invoked Babe Ruth's famous line justifying being paid more than Pres Herbert Hoover because Ruth had had "a better year." This month, Pres Barack Obama will be sworn in for a second term. His annual salary will be $400,000. Of course, compensation is about a lot more than wages and salaries in most jobs, and it is no different for the president of the US. Consider that the president enjoys a $50,000 "expense allowance" that is not taxed. There are also rewards after leaving office. Again, …

Data Improvement And Labor Economics, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

The expansion of available data for research has transformed empirical labor economics over the past generation. This paper briefly highlights some of the changes and describes a few examples of papers that illustrate the advances. It also documents the changing ways data have been used in the Journal of Labor Economics over the past 30 years, including a trend toward a higher fraction of papers using any data and, among those papers using any data, a higher fraction using nonpublic data, a higher fraction using international data, and more frequent use of multiple data sources. Finally, this paper describes work …
