Stakeholder Theory, Value, And Firm Performance, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Andrew C. Wicks Jan 2013

Stakeholder Theory, Value, And Firm Performance, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Andrew C. Wicks

Management Faculty Publications

This paper argues that the notion of value has been overly simplified and narrowed to focus on economic returns. Stakeholder theory provides an appropriate lens for considering a more complex perspective of the value that stakeholders seek as well as new ways to measure it. We develop a four-factor perspective for defining value that includes, but extends beyond, the economic value stakeholders seek. To highlight its distinctiveness, we compare this perspective to three other popular performance perspectives. Recommendations are made regarding performance measurement for both academic researchers and practitioners. The stakeholder perspective on value offered in this paper draws attention …

The Viability Of Water Privatization In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kelsey Burke Jan 2013

The Viability Of Water Privatization In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kelsey Burke

Economics Honors Papers

Lack of accessible clean water impacts millions of people around the world. Throughout the 1990s, the privatization of developing countries’ water sectors was seen as a way to improve inefficient and ineffective water service. While many of the privatization projects failed, it is important to assess the possibility of learning from these mistakes, and better utilizing private sector support as a tool to address global water deficiencies. I set out to show that water privatization can be an effective tool to address urban water needs if the process is conducted correctly. Through the completion of three case studies, I am …

"These Illegals": Personhood, Profit, And The Political Economy Of Punishment In Federal-Local Immigration Enforcement Partnerships, Daniel L. Stageman Jan 2013

"These Illegals": Personhood, Profit, And The Political Economy Of Punishment In Federal-Local Immigration Enforcement Partnerships, Daniel L. Stageman

Publications and Research

Contemporary popular discourse linking immigration and immigrants to crime has proved extremely difficult to dislodge, despite clear evidence that immigrant labor provides broad and direct economic benefits to a significant proportion of the US population. The criminalizing discourse directed at immigrants may in part be functional, by leading to restrictionist immigration policies and practices and subjecting immigrants to intensified economic exploitation.

This study examines the economic context in which state and local governments adopt restrictionist immigration policies and practices, and implicates the political economy of punishment (Rusche and Kirchheimer, Punishment and social structure. New York: Columbia University Press, 1939) …

A Decomposition Analysis Of Base Metal Prices: Comparing The Effect Of Detrending Methods On Trend Identification And Cyclical Components, Mahmoodreza Modirroosta Jan 2013

A Decomposition Analysis Of Base Metal Prices: Comparing The Effect Of Detrending Methods On Trend Identification And Cyclical Components, Mahmoodreza Modirroosta

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This thesis analyzes the long-term trend behavior and cyclical components of real base metal prices. A decomposition approach is used to separate the real prices of base metals into a time trend and cyclical components. In this regard, linear and quadratic detrending methods along with Hodrick-Prescott and Baxter-King filters are applied to the base metal prices. Linear and quadratic trendlines are good estimates of the trend component and easy to interpret if the coefficients of estimated trends are significant and the coefficient of determination is relatively high. The Hodrick-Prescott and Baxter-King filters are good fits to the price series, but …

Exotic Option Pricing: Analysis And Presentation Using Excel Jan 2013

Exotic Option Pricing: Analysis And Presentation Using Excel

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

Analysis and presentation of derivatives analysis presents challenges to educators. The nature of financial derivatives is complex and varied, requiring structured modeling techniques. As sophisticated as these techniques may be, ineffective communication of the pricing process can impair the application of the models to investment scenarios. This paper presents a possible framework for analyzing and presenting exotic option pricing, and demonstrates the use of the model through three example analyses: Asian options, down-and-out options, and down-and-in options (barrier options).

The Organization Of Banking And Supervision, Introduction And Overview, Clas Wihlborg Jan 2013

The Organization Of Banking And Supervision, Introduction And Overview, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

"The focus of this Special Issue is on organizational reforms in the financial sector in the aftermath of the financial crisis 2007-2009 and the subsequent euro-zone crisis. In particular, the perception that many banks were too big and too complex to fail during the crisis, which led to very costly bailouts at tax-payers expense in several countries, has fueled a number of proposals to limit the size and the complexity of financial institutions, as well as proposals to reorganize public authorities responsible for supervision and crisis management."

The Philippines’ experience in international labour migration is widely considered a success – an observation endorsed by international bodies such as the World Health Organisation. As an active source of professional nurses to the developed world, the country continues to produce more nurses than the local nursing market can employ; a labour strategy that is promoted, facilitated and supported by the Philippine state and nursing educational system. This thesis interrogates Filipino nurse migration through the methodological prism of autoethnography, drawing on first-hand experience and reflexive accounts, interviews, photographs, policy documents and material cultural artefacts, to critically examine and challenge the …

Estimating Willingness To Pay For River Amenities And Safety Measures Associated With Shale Gas Extraction, Thomas C. Kinnaman Jan 2013

Estimating Willingness To Pay For River Amenities And Safety Measures Associated With Shale Gas Extraction, Thomas C. Kinnaman

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper utilizes a Contingent Valuation Method survey of a random sample of residents to estimate that households are willing to pay an average of $12.00 per month for public projects designed to improve river access and $10.46 per month for additional safety measures that would eliminate risks to local watersheds from drilling for natural gas from underground shale formations. These estimates can be compared to the costs of providing each of these two amenities to help foster the formation of efficient policy decisions.

The Choice Of Technology And Rural-Urban Migration In Economic Development, Haiwen Zhou Jan 2013

The Choice Of Technology And Rural-Urban Migration In Economic Development, Haiwen Zhou

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper studies a general equilibrium model of rural-urban migration in which manufacturing firms engage in oligopolistic competition and choose increasing returns technologies to maximize profits. Urban residents incur commuting costs to work in the Central Business District. Surprisingly a change in the size of the population or an increase in the exogenously given wage rate will not affect a manufacturing firm’s choice of technology. This helps to explain why firms in developing countries may not adopt labor intensive technologies even under abundant labor supply. An increase in the number of manufacturing firms increases both the employment rate and the …

Conservation Compliance Under The House And Senate Versions Of The 2013 Farm Bill: A Role For Empathy Nudging?, Hans J. Czap, Natalia Czap, Gary D. Lynne, Mark E. Burbach

Cornhusker Economics

Current and past farming practices have led to significant environmental degradation in the form of soil erosion (sediments), as well as fertilizer and chemical related water pollution. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has long tried to implement policies to temper such negative effects on the environment. The 2008 Farm Bill which currently guides agricultural and related environmental/conservation policy is being revised on this front. The United States Senate and the House of Representatives are each currently proposing a version of the 2013 Farm Bill to change the existing system, making it more efficient in achieving environmental (and other …

Occupational Labor Shortages : Concepts, Causes, Consequences, And Cures, Burt S. Barnow, John Trutko, Jaclyn Schede Piatak

Upjohn Press

There has long been concern that shortages sometimes develop and persist in specific occupations, leading to inefficiencies in the U.S. economy. This book will help readers understand why occupational shortages arise, how to know a shortage when it is present, and to assess strategies to alleviate the shortage. As the authors show, many economists, including several U.S. Nobel Prize winners, have studied occupational shortages, and this volume builds on their work.

Routes Of Compromise: Road Building And Motor Transportation In Modern Mexico, 1920-1952, Michael K. Bess Jan 2013

Routes Of Compromise: Road Building And Motor Transportation In Modern Mexico, 1920-1952, Michael K. Bess

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

"Routes of Compromise" studies the creation and function of the government bureaucracy that built motor roads and highways, and the everyday impact of those roadways on public life in Mexico. It covers roughly thirty years of construction efforts from 1920 to the early 1950s as foreign and domestic actors, working at the transnational, national, state, and local levels, established a series of policy and investment programs that became the primary model for infrastructure development in Mexico during the mid-twentieth century. Road building offers a unique perspective to the study of Mexican state formation, underscoring how the national government sought to …

An Econometric Approach For Modeling Population Change In Arkansas, David Alexandro Ramirez Jan 2013

An Econometric Approach For Modeling Population Change In Arkansas, David Alexandro Ramirez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study models population in the state of Arkansas using a small econometric model, and is similar to a previous demographic model developed by Fullerton and Barraza de Anda (2008). The components of population change consist of births, deaths, and net migration. Births minus deaths equal natural increase, and population in the current period is population from the previous period plus natural increase plus net migration. Births and deaths are modeled as functions of a one period autoregressive lag as well as national trends. Net migration is also modeled as a one period lag of itself in addition to relative …

A State-To-State Analysis Of Mexican Migration To The U.S., Avilia Bueno Jan 2013

A State-To-State Analysis Of Mexican Migration To The U.S., Avilia Bueno

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The determinants of undocumented immigration flows from Mexican states to U.S. states utilizing data recently released by the Mexican consulate are analyzed. The impact of economic, demographic, and geographic factors on immigrant location choice in the year 2007 is analyzed using ordinary least squares, tobit, and two stage least squares to control for factors likely to be endogenous with immigration. The results generally support that immigrants tend to migrate towards states with higher Mexican immigrant populations, shorter distances, higher wages, and smaller populations. In addition, the relationship between undocumented immigration and economic freedom and the policy measures used to construct …

Reits And Stock Market Cointegration, Jessie E. Felix Jan 2013

Reits And Stock Market Cointegration, Jessie E. Felix

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Real Estate is popular among investors looking for attractive total returns, predictable price movements, and low correlations to the general equity markets. The financial crisis of 2007 led by real estate mortgage defaults led to a universal bear market, and a credit freeze which impacted REITs ability to raise capital. REITs long viewed perception as a distinct asset class was questioned as a result. Research analyzing REITs long run trends find evidence of an existing long run relationship between REITs, and the S&P. This paper employs the same cointegration framework of prior studies using a longer sample period, and favors …

El Paso Residential Electricity Demand, David Ronald Macias Jan 2013

El Paso Residential Electricity Demand, David Ronald Macias

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study utilizes a dynamic error correction model to analyze the demand for residential electricity in El Paso County, Texas. Annual data is provided by El Paso Electric Company covering the period from 1977 to 2011. This study reports negative income elasticities for residential electricity demand and indicates that electricity is treated as an inferior good in El Paso County. The negative income elasticity result runs counter to many earlier studies, although recent empirical evidence indicates that residential electricity is also treated as an inferior good in the Seattle service territory. Negative income elasticities are an interesting result, and may …

Punishment First: A Study Of Juvenile Pretrial Detention, Richard V. Foster, David Tanenhaus, Heather Lynn Lusty

McNair Poster Presentations

How society and the legal system should respond to youth crime is a volatile issue. Much research exists on this topic broadly. A largely overlooked subset exists regarding the rights of juveniles in the United States who face pretrial confinement, specifically how juveniles accused of delinquency are treated by the courts. Delinquency or a delinquent act, in the context of this study, is “an act that would be considered a crime if committed by an adult.”7. Adults and children are processed by the courts differently, each with their own rights and court mandated procedures to follow. This report analyzes …
