Prudential Arrangements For Stability And Development Of Islamic Finance, Ishrat Husain Dr. May 2007

Prudential Arrangements For Stability And Development Of Islamic Finance, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Prudential regulations, supervisory mechanisms, monitoring and enforcement arrangements are as important to Islamic finance industry as they are to the rest of the financial industry. The only distinction is that the institutional arrangements governing Islamic finance are to be derived from the specific nature and characteristics of Islamic financial institutions, Islamic financial markets, Islamic financial instruments, Islamic banking laws and the Islamic financial infrastructure. This paper based on a cross country comparison of seven countries which account for most of the Islamic finance activities in the national jurisdictions attempts to highlight the question of adequacy of these institutional arrangements, pleads …

Financial Liberalization And Money Demand In Mauritius, Rebecca Hodel May 2007

Financial Liberalization And Money Demand In Mauritius, Rebecca Hodel

Master's Theses - Economics

2 Financial Liberalization and Money Demand in Mauritius Abstract The Bank of Mauritius is considering moving to a formal inflation-targeting framework, which will require, among other things, a better understanding of the monetary policy transmission mechanism. This paper will contribute to this understanding by testing the stability of the money demand function for both M1 and M2 in Mauritius using annual data for the period 1967 to 2005. The Durbin h test and Chow test for structural stability are employed to ascertain whether the current policy framework satisfies the necessary condition for effectiveness. The results demonstrate a stable money demand …

Divergent Effect Of Social Cohesion On Economic Growth In East Asia And Latin America, Horacio Diaz Adda May 2007

Divergent Effect Of Social Cohesion On Economic Growth In East Asia And Latin America, Horacio Diaz Adda

Honors Theses

In this paper I explore the link between social cohesion and economic growth in Latin America and East Asia. Unlike previous studies, I allow for different slope parameters for the different regions. Using ethno linguistic fractionalization as a proxy, I find that social cohesion has not played an important role in determining growth outcomes in Latin America. While social cohesion has not had a direct effect on growth nor institutions in Latin America, it helps explain a large degree of the growth differentials among Asian countries. Social cohesion mostly impacts growth through its effect on institutional quality. However, these results …

Local Distributional Effects Of Government Cash Transfers In Chile, Claudio A. Agostini, Philip H. Brown May 2007

Local Distributional Effects Of Government Cash Transfers In Chile, Claudio A. Agostini, Philip H. Brown

Working Papers in Economics

Despite rapid economic growth and poverty reduction, inequality in Chile has remained high and remarkably constant over the last 20 years, prompting academic and public interest in the subject. Due to data limitations, however, research on inequality in Chile has concentrated on the national and regional levels. The impact of cash subsidies to poor households on local inequality is thus not well understood. Using poverty-mapping methods to asses this impact, we find heterogeneity in the effectiveness of regional and municipal governments in reducing inequality via poverty-reduction transfers, suggesting that alternative targeting regimes may complement current practice in aiding the poor.

Offshoring And Unemployment, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan May 2007

Offshoring And Unemployment, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Economics - All Scholarship

In this paper, in order to study the impact of offshoring on sectoral and economywide rates of unemployment, we construct a two sector general equilibrium model in which labor is mobile across the two sectors, and unemployment is caused by search frictions. We find that, contrary to general perception, wage increases and sectoral unemployment decreases due to offshoring. This result can be understood to arise from the productivity enhancing (cost reducing) effect of offshoring. If the search cost is identical in the two sectors, or even if the search cost is higher in the sector which experiences offshoring, the economywide …

Indian Manufacturing: A Slow Sector In A Rapidly Growing Economy, Devashish Mitra, Beyza P. Ural May 2007

Indian Manufacturing: A Slow Sector In A Rapidly Growing Economy, Devashish Mitra, Beyza P. Ural

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper investigates the determinants of productivity in Indian manufacturing industries during the period 1988-2000. Using two-digit industry level data for the Indian states, we find evidence of imperfect interindustry and interstate labor mobility as well as misallocation of resources across industries and states. Trade liberalization increases productivity in all industries across all states, and productivity is higher in the less protected industries. These effects of protection and trade liberalization are more pronounced in states that have relatively more flexible labor markets. Similar effects are also found in the case of employment, capital stock and investment. Furthermore, labor market flexibility, …

Development And Inequality: The Origins And Consequences Of Disciplinary Power In Argentina, Jessica Cenegy Brice May 2007

Development And Inequality: The Origins And Consequences Of Disciplinary Power In Argentina, Jessica Cenegy Brice

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Significant emphasis has been placed upon external influences which have maintained or perpetuated the relative underdevelopment of Latin America. Though some of this literature will provide a basis for explanation, the current analysis addresses the phenomenon with a notable variation from existing perspectives by introducing the Foucauldian distinction between juridical power and disciplinary power as an evaluative framework of analysis. Specifically, it emphasizes the need to incorporate unique cultural, historical, and structural characteristics that interrelate with power dynamics that have materialized within Argentina and have frustrated development efforts.

Minimum Wage As A Poverty Reducing Measure, Kevin Souza May 2007

Minimum Wage As A Poverty Reducing Measure, Kevin Souza

Master's Theses - Economics

With the recent increase in the Federal minimum wage, it is important to consider the impact of minimum wage in order to assess its effectiveness as a poverty reducing measure. While an increase in the minimum wage will increase income, the increased labor cost may cause an increase in unemployment. Greater unemployment may negate any benefit derived from the change in the minimum wage. Also, the minimum wage could put upward pressure on all wages. By using data from the Census and Bureau of Labor and Statistic’s 2006 March Supplement, it is possible to develop a model that empirically tests …

Peer Effects In Sports: Evidence From Ncaa Relay Teams, Lisa Elin Haglund May 2007

Peer Effects In Sports: Evidence From Ncaa Relay Teams, Lisa Elin Haglund

Economics Theses - Archive

This paper investigates whether disparity in team member quality impacts team production using NCAA 4x400m relay teams. As a measure of quality I use the team member's individual rankings. The net peer effects are estimated on a team level rather than on an individual level, and are found to have both an absolute and relative negative effect on the team performance. This paper is differentiated from the existing literature by using a direct measure of quality compared to other indirect measures of worker quality such as wages. The evidence provided herein shows that a greater disparity in team member quality …

A New Measure Of Financial Openness, Menzie David Chinn, Hiro Ito May 2007

A New Measure Of Financial Openness, Menzie David Chinn, Hiro Ito

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We create a new index that measures the extent of openness in capital account transactions. Despite the abundance of literature and policy analyses regarding the effect of financial liberalization, the debate is far from settled. One of the reasons for that outcome is the lack of proper ways of measuring the extent of the openness in cross-border financial transactions. We seek to remedy this deficiency by creating an index aimed at measuring the extensity of capital controls based on the information from the IMF’s Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions (AREAER). This paper details how we construct the …

Creative Destruction In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Darshak Patel May 2007

Creative Destruction In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Darshak Patel

Economics Theses - Archive

Pharmaceutical firms usually patent any new innovation in terms of the chemicals they use. These innovations are then developed in to drugs which are marketed once approved by FDA. These patents have made and receive citations. Citations made by patents granted today are backward citations and citations a patent will receive in the future are forward citations. This research shows that these patent citations on have a positive effect on market value of Pharmaceutical firms related to the patent. Backward citations do not destroy company rents. In fact, backward citations, illustrate the importance of the cited patent. Multiple citations imply …

The Market Return To Pharmaceutical Product Approval, Imtiaz Ahmed May 2007

The Market Return To Pharmaceutical Product Approval, Imtiaz Ahmed

Economics Theses - Archive

Does the public announcement of approval of New Drugs affect the market valuation of the sponsoring pharmaceutical company? This study will try to find out the technically and intuitively acceptable answer of this question using event study methodology. Relatively smaller number of previous studies on this issue found the mixed answers of this question using well-tested methodology of event study. Basing on the notion that the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) is in effect in the pharmaceutical industry, stock and securities market should ideally react quickly (i.e., efficiently) in response to the public announcement of approval of new drug by the …

Applications Of Subsampling, Hybrid, And Size-Correction Methods, Donald W.K. Andrews, Patrik Guggenberger May 2007

Applications Of Subsampling, Hybrid, And Size-Correction Methods, Donald W.K. Andrews, Patrik Guggenberger

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper analyzes the properties of subsampling, hybrid subsampling, and size-correction methods in two non-regular models. The latter two procedures are introduced in Andrews and Guggenberger (2005b). The models are non-regular in the sense that the test statistics of interest exhibit a discontinuity in their limit distribution as a function of a parameter in the model. The first model is a linear instrumental variables (IV) model with possibly weak IVs estimated using two-stage least squares (2SLS). In this case, the discontinuity occurs when the concentration parameter is zero. The second model is a linear regression model in which the parameter …

An Analysis Of The Application Of Club Good Models To Determine Carrying Capacity Of National Parks, Rachel Smith May 2007

An Analysis Of The Application Of Club Good Models To Determine Carrying Capacity Of National Parks, Rachel Smith

Master's Theses - Economics

The National Parks and Recreation Act of 1978 requires that park managers develop and implement a plan regarding visitor carrying capacity. In response, econometricians have developed models that may be helpful to park management in regards to meeting this goal. The focus of this paper is to highlight some of the earlier work done by Buchanan (1965) and Ng (1973) in regards to modeling club goods and then to examine more recent attempts by Turner (2000) and Prato (2001) in applying these models to help determine carrying capacity of national parks. Turner (2000) and Prato’s (2001) models will then be …

The Impact Of Hiv On Economic Development, Kate Jones-Smith May 2007

The Impact Of Hiv On Economic Development, Kate Jones-Smith

Master's Theses - Economics

This paper estimates the impact of the HIV epidemic on the economic development taking place around the world. The focus is put on the World Bank measurements taken of various countries and other significant populations in 2003. Through these measurements, the annual growth rate is compared with the HIV prevalence rate in order to determine the impact. Even though the effect is only marginally significant, the data does show a slight negative effect on the economic growth around the world. These results suggest that as the pandemic increases in severity, the development of areas around the world will be adversely …

Effects Of Infertility Insurance Mandates On Fertility, Lucie Schmidt May 2007

Effects Of Infertility Insurance Mandates On Fertility, Lucie Schmidt

Economics: Faculty Publications

Infertility currently affects over 6 million individuals in the United States. While most health insurance plans nationwide do not cover infertility diagnoses or treatments, to date 15 states have enacted some form of infertility insurance mandate. In this paper, I use data from the Vital Statistics Detail Natality Data and Census population estimates to examine whether these state-level mandates were successful in increasing fertility rates. Using a difference-in-differences approach, I exploit variation in the enactment of mandates both across states and over time, and identify treatment and control groups that should have been differentially affected by infertility coverage. My results …

Temporary Shocks And Offshoring: The Role Of External Economies And Firm Heterogeneity, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan May 2007

Temporary Shocks And Offshoring: The Role Of External Economies And Firm Heterogeneity, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Economics - All Scholarship

We construct a model of offshoring with externalities and firm heterogeneity. Due to the presence of externalities, temporary shocks like the Y2K problem can have permanent effects, i.e., they can permanently raise the extent of offshoring in an industry. Also, the initial advantage of a country as a potential host for outsourcing activities can create a lock in effect, whereby late movers have a comparative disadvantage. Furthermore, the existence of firm heterogeneity along with externalities can help explain the dynamic process of offshoring, where the most productive firms offshore first and the others follow later. Finally, we work out some …

An Analysis Of The Economic Impact Of Biodiesel Production In Illinois, Kelly Uphoff May 2007

An Analysis Of The Economic Impact Of Biodiesel Production In Illinois, Kelly Uphoff

Master's Theses - Economics

The production of biodiesel in the United States has expanded greatly in recent years. A factor contributing to the growth of this industry is the perception that renewable fuel production is an economic boon to state and local economies, particularly those of rural areas. This study estimates the economic impact of biodiesel production in the state of Illinois. Through input-output analysis and by simulating the industry using IMPLAN, the impact of a 10 million gallon per year plant using soy oil as its only feedstock is modeled. The estimated effect on output, employment, and other parameters is substantial. However, the …
