A Comparative Evaluation Of The Cost Effectiveness Of Treating The Metabolic Syndrome In African Americans And The General Population, Joseph T. Tasosa Jan 2004

A Comparative Evaluation Of The Cost Effectiveness Of Treating The Metabolic Syndrome In African Americans And The General Population, Joseph T. Tasosa

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The Metabolic Syndrome poses an important public health threat to the U.S. health care delivery system. Disparate access to quality health care makes African Americans (blacks) especially susceptible to the adverse effects of MS. Although direct evidence suggests that early treatment of MS risk factors saves lives, no study to date has compared the cost effectiveness of such measures in blacks and the general population. Interventions that promote early treatment of MS risk factors may improve public health but could also lead to excess costs that are ultimately borne by society. The objective of this study was to assess the …

Momentum Strategies Versus Directional Momentum Strategies: A Comparative Study With Stocks, Zi Ning Jan 2004

Momentum Strategies Versus Directional Momentum Strategies: A Comparative Study With Stocks, Zi Ning

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

In replicating the study by Akhbari and Gressis (2002) in mutual funds, this paper compares the profitability of traditional momentum strategy with the directional momentum strategies in stock markets. Not only the past quarterly return but also the patterns of monthly returns within a quarter are considered. The evidence shows that the raw return findings are similar to the findings in mutual fund study. However, the risk- adjusted returns are not consistent with the raw returns and statistically insignificant, very probably, due to the extremely small sample size.

Representations Of The Philippine Stock Market And Securities Research, And Global Financial Regularization, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr Jan 2004

Representations Of The Philippine Stock Market And Securities Research, And Global Financial Regularization, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

While the current turmoil in global finance seems to support calls for

“transparency,” “accountability,” and “professionalization,” closer analysis reveals disjunctures in the dominant discourse on corporate governance, whose central element is the promotion of “investor confidence”

and “shareholder value.” This essay draws on the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu and Stuart Hall to examine how representations of the

stock market and securities research in the Philippines regularize particular interests, identities, relations, and hierarchies in the global political economy. But it also shows how these representations reveal

underlying tensions in the discourse that open up spaces for rearticulating and reordering financial …

Fear Assessment: Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Pricing Of Fear And Anxiety, Matthew D. Adler Jan 2004

Fear Assessment: Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Pricing Of Fear And Anxiety, Matthew D. Adler

Faculty Scholarship

Risk assessment is now a common feature of regulatory practice, but fear assessment is not. In particular, environmental, health and safety agencies such as EPA, FDA, OSHA, NHTSA, and CPSC, commonly count death, illness and injury as costs for purposes of cost-benefit analysis, but almost never incorporate fear, anxiety or other welfare-reducing mental states into the analysis. This is puzzling, since fear and anxiety are welfare setbacks, and since the very hazards regulated by these agencies - air or water pollutants, toxic waste dumps, food additives and contaminants, workplace toxins and safety threats, automobiles, dangerous consumer products, radiation, and so …

This curriculum for gifted learners' grade 5-8, was designed out of a sense of authentic inspiration around just the conceptual magnitude of the phrase, United Nations. Also written about, around, and in response to the events of September 11, 2001, this curriculum reflects only one of the ways in which the field of education has responded to …

Organizing In The Garment Industry In Mexico: Implications For New Social Movement Theory, Victoria Carty Jan 2004

Organizing In The Garment Industry In Mexico: Implications For New Social Movement Theory, Victoria Carty

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

This paper examines attempts to improve workers' rights in the Maquila Industry in Mexico by using two case studies. It analyzes the struggles that recently occurred at the Kukdong and Duro plants. The underlying question of the research is how to balance the co-existence of market economies with effective means to ensure adequate conditions for workers, and most importantly, ensuring their right to freedom of association. Under recent forms of global economic restructuring, the state is often unwilling or unable to uphold workers' rights. To combat the present form of corporate-driven global capitalism, workers in the South, in solidarity with …

Developing Integrated Object-Oriented Conception Of Geomarketing As A Tool For Promotion Of Regional Sustainable Development: The Case Study Of Ukraine, Volodymyr M. Anderson Jan 2004

Developing Integrated Object-Oriented Conception Of Geomarketing As A Tool For Promotion Of Regional Sustainable Development: The Case Study Of Ukraine, Volodymyr M. Anderson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In the paper we propose and discuss new vision of geomarketing as a tool for promotion of regional sustainable development. Integrated object-oriented conception of geomarketing was designed by adoption and elaboration of some new ideas and approaches, such as “place marketing”, “non-profit marketing”, “counter-marketing”, “collaborative spatial decision-making”, “endogenous regional development”, “regional sustainable development”, “public-private partnership”. We explore how geomarketing in such a comprehension may be implemented in business and public administration, regional development policy making on example of some Ukrainian firms, regional governments, and communities. The proposed geomarketing conception is based on integration of three different interpretations of geomarketing: 1) …

Wealth Effects On Consumer Spending In The Us Economy, Andriy Avramenko Jan 2004

Wealth Effects On Consumer Spending In The Us Economy, Andriy Avramenko

Honors Theses

This paper investigates the effects of wealth on consumer spending in the United States. A traditional life-cycle model is estimated first. Although it does find a statistically significant wealth effect, its findings are unusable due to the presence of autocorrelation and non-stationarity. Variables in logarithmic forms are found to be cointegrated. Thus, a logarithmic model with the Stock-Watson adjustment and an AR(I) term is estimated instead. Three extensions to this model are offered. First, wealth is divided into stock market and non-stock market components, second into liquid and illiquid components. Finally, a new approach to the wealth division is introduced, …

Does Prison Harden Inmates? A Discontinuity-Based Approach, Keith M. Chen, Jesse M. Shapiro Jan 2004

Does Prison Harden Inmates? A Discontinuity-Based Approach, Keith M. Chen, Jesse M. Shapiro

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Some two million Americans are currently incarcerated, with roughly six hundred thousand to be released this year. Despite this, little is known about the effects of confinement conditions on the post-release lives of inmates. Focusing on post-release criminal activity, we identify the causal effect of prison conditions on recidivism rates by exploiting a discontinuity in the assignment of federal prisoners to security levels. We find that harsher prison conditions are associated with significantly more post-release crime.

Using Incentives To Encourage Aids Programs And Policies In The Workplace: A Study Of Feasibility And Impact In Thailand, Simon Baker, Srisuman Sartsara, Patchara Rumakom, Philip Guest, Katie D. Schenk, Anthony Pramualratana, Suparat Suksakulwat, Surachai Panakitsuwan, Sikarat Moonmeung Jan 2004

Using Incentives To Encourage Aids Programs And Policies In The Workplace: A Study Of Feasibility And Impact In Thailand, Simon Baker, Srisuman Sartsara, Patchara Rumakom, Philip Guest, Katie D. Schenk, Anthony Pramualratana, Suparat Suksakulwat, Surachai Panakitsuwan, Sikarat Moonmeung

HIV and AIDS

A recently completed Horizons study in Thailand examined the question of how to encourage the private sector to become actively involved in developing and improving workplace HIV/AIDS programs. The study found that the AIDS-response Standard Organization (ASO) initiative mobilized a moderate proportion of different types of companies to develop and improve HIV/AIDS workplace policies and programs. The data also reveal that companies that were eligible for the insurance discount made the greatest improvements. Thus a financial incentive combined with efforts to tap into managers’ willingness to respond to the epidemic can be important motivators for certain companies to improve their …

Non-Linear Input-Output Models: Practicability And Potential, Guy R. West, Randall Jackson Jan 2004

Non-Linear Input-Output Models: Practicability And Potential, Guy R. West, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The conventional input-output model has been widely criticised, both justly and unjustly, for its limiting assumptions. One of these assumptions is homogeneity of degree one. This paper explores some approaches to minimise this limitation of traditional input-output analysis by removing the assumption of linear coefficients for the intermediate and household sectors. As is well documented in the literature, the household sector is the dominant component of multiplier effects in an input-output model, so using marginal income and expenditure coefficients for the household sector provides a more accurate estimate of the multiplier effects. A price model can then utilised to estimate …

Labor Market Size And Unemployment Duration: A Theoretical Note, Peter V. Schaeffer, Tesfa Gebremedhin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

When job prospects are uncertain, labor market size matters even when labor and jobs, respectively, are homogenous. The expected unemployment duration and its standard deviation may then differ systematically with labor market size.

An Economic Impact Study Of The Pennsylvania Section Of The Cove Point Expansion, Randall Jackson, Walter R. Schwarm Jan 2004

An Economic Impact Study Of The Pennsylvania Section Of The Cove Point Expansion, Randall Jackson, Walter R. Schwarm

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Dominion Resources, Inc. engaged the Regional Research Institute to determine the total economic impacts associated with pipeline construction and/or modernization proposals traversing several Pennsylvania jurisdictions. The proposed project represents an investment of approximately $200 million. The scope of this analysis consists of estimating varying economic effects including job creation and resulting personal income, output and fiscal or tax revenue impacts directly associated with both the operational and construction phases of the proposed Pipeline expansion project. We calculate the spill-over or multiplicative impacts that will arise from the proposed Pipeline project. Additionally, some attempt is made in this analysis to capture …

The Role Of Small Business In Economic Growth And Poverty Alleviation In West Virginia: An Empirical Analysis, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Randall Jackson Jan 2004

The Role Of Small Business In Economic Growth And Poverty Alleviation In West Virginia: An Empirical Analysis, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The main objective of the study is to empirically evaluate the critical roles of small businesses in economic growth and poverty alleviation in West Virginia. In OLS and 2SLS regression analysis a positive relationship exists between small business and economic growth. A strong inverse relationship also exists between the incidence of poverty and small business and economic growth. Thus, the empirical result establishes the linkage between small business, economic growth and the incidence of poverty.

Location-Specific Amenities, Equilibrium, And Constraints On Location Choices, Brian Cushing Jan 2004

Location-Specific Amenities, Equilibrium, And Constraints On Location Choices, Brian Cushing

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This research considers how preferences for location-specific attributes might constrain migration destination choices. In particular, if, at any given time, most people are consuming their desired location-specific attributes, then unwillingness to give up these attributes may influence the decision to migrate. For those who migrate, these desired attributes might significantly constrain the locations they would consider. This perspective differs substantially from the normal approach that assumes people move toward “good attributes” and away from “bad attributes.” The research provides an initial test of a “constrained destination choice” hypothesis by considering “locational attribute constraints” in the context of aggregate place-to-place migration …

Effects Of Zoning On Residential Option Value, Jonathan C. Young Jan 2004

Effects Of Zoning On Residential Option Value, Jonathan C. Young

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Knowing more precisely how zoning affects housing value would allow policy-makers to improve long-term policy decisions. Previous studies have concluded that local zoning regulations affect residential option value. These studies, however, do not specify the magnitude of the effect for varying zoning types. This study quantifies zoning’s effect on residential option value for specific types of zoning using a hedonic regression model of housing prices. The study utilizes information on housing characteristics and sales prices for a cross-section of houses in Monongalia County, West Virginia. The research develops two models to differentiate between zoning effects on developed versus undeveloped properties. …

Dematerialization And Transmaterialization: What Have We Learned?, Walter C. Labys Jan 2004

Dematerialization And Transmaterialization: What Have We Learned?, Walter C. Labys

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Long-term materials demand patterns are important to examine because of the possibility of material obsolescence as well as the long lead times required to create new mineral productive capacity. Since structural changes in materials demand are inevitably linked to the performance and adjustments of national economies, materials life cycles have often been examined in the context of intensity of use (IOU). Explanations of these structural changes have focused on dematerialization; this concept implies a structural change in an economy embodying a reduced demand for materials and, therefore, a decline in overall industrial growth. An alternative view is that of transmaterialization, …
