Online Marriage And "Buhay Ko" (My Life): Views From Filipino Prospective Brides, Wives, And Their U.S./British/Australian Husbands, Maria Jessica Crespo

Communication ETDs

Online marriage programs or mail-order-bride programs have gained tremendous popularity and international reach in the recent years. Online marriage programs are venues in which women can advertise themselves as available for marriage and where men can find potential wives. These programs have both critics and proponents. Critics say it is a form of exploitation and control while proponents argue that it leads to happiness and romance. Although critics' and proponents' views have been well presented in many of the mail-order-bride literature, there is little information or account of the experiences of the participants. This study gives attention to the discursive …

Kosovo's Hope: Stories Of Renewal And Despair In An Independent Nation, Clay Lomneth, Michael Mason-D'Croz, Lindsay Demarco, Karen Schmidt, Vanessa Skocz, Shannon Smith, Kate Veik, Joel Gehringer, Bruce Thorson, Scott Winter

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Media

During spring break of 2008, five photojournalists, one reporter, one videographer and two faculty members spent eight days in the newly independent state of Kosovo. The purpose of the trip was to document issues of poverty. What greeted them was a town with litter everywhere; roads pocked with potholes; power outages because the power plant is archaic; and residents who are dying from the pollution because they live near the power plant. But what the journalists discovered was Kosovo's people have big smiles, warm hearts and plates of great, great food. … And they love Americans.

A Wild Weekend In Sports, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 2009

A Wild Weekend In Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was one of those weekends of sports gluttony, especially if you were fixated on a television set, intent on catching every bit of drama you could find. And indeed there was much to find. Hockey, basketball, tennis, golf, NASCAR, baseball, horse racing, and who knows how much else if you have access to the worldwide network of sports channels available from every corner of the universe. As for me, this weekend was extraordinarily full of sport as I was a bit under the weather and looking for escape from the realities of physical irritation.

Walter Cronkite once observed that journalists are a lot more selfcritical than normal people. “I don’t think there’s any profession or occupation today that spends more time looking at its own navel than we do,“ he said.

Tailings Tale: Mike Horse Looms Dark Over The Blackfoot, Elizabeth L. Harrison May 2009

Tailings Tale: Mike Horse Looms Dark Over The Blackfoot, Elizabeth L. Harrison

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

In the spring of 1975, a heavy rain blew out an earthen dam holding back toxic metal waste from the now defunct Mike Horse mine at the headwaters of the scenic Big Blackfoot River. Federal agencies, a corporate mining giant, and the small town community of Lincoln, Montana, grapple with the repercussions and future of the watershed.

Children's Perceptions Of Male And Female Athletes As Presented In Sports Illustrated For Kids, Brittany Perotti

Honors Scholar Theses

Despite gains made by Title IX in the past 36 years, including increased female participation in high school and collegiate sport, there is evidence that gender equity in sport is not fully achieved. Researchers target the media because they tend to shape social values and disseminate information to the masses (Kane, 1978, in Fink & Kensicki, 2002). As sports become more pervasive, framing theory has become particularly relevant. The purpose of this study is to build on the Hardin et al.

(2002) study by examining the relationship among media sports coverage, gender equity in sport and the perceptions young sports …

Aruba And Natalee Holloway: A Content Analysis Of Four Years Of Newspaper Coverage Surrounding The Incident., Brittany Parks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Negative media coverage can have a significant impact on the image of a country and can be detrimental to tourism-dependent areas. This study examined the newspaper coverage of Aruba 2 years before and after American tourist Natalee Holloway disappeared while vacationing with fellow classmates on a class trip. A content analysis of 400 major world newspapers was conducted. The study's purpose was to uncover the amount of publicity (both good and bad) from the incident as well as to unearth the overall tone towards Aruba.

The study revealed the Holloway incident did have a visible effect on the world news …

Through The Eyes Of The Post: American Media Coverage Of The Armenian Genocide., Jessica L. Taylor May 2009

Through The Eyes Of The Post: American Media Coverage Of The Armenian Genocide., Jessica L. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many historians refer to the Armenian Genocide of 1915 as the first genocide of the twentieth century. In the context of the first global war, the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire were systematically persecuted and many eliminated while the world watched. Yet today, American memory and conception of the Armenian Genocide is remarkably different from similar historical events such as the Holocaust. The Armenian Genocide and America's reaction to it is a forgotten event in American memory.

In an attempt to better understand this process of forgetting, this thesis analyzes the Washington Post's news coverage of the Armenian Genocide. By …
