Rural towns in the midwest are often highly supportive of their high school basketball teams and Indian reservation teams are no exception. The trouble is Native American players and fans face racism when facing high school teams from outside reservations.

Over the last decade, from 2008-2018, there have been at least 45 reported incidences all over the U.S. of racial incidents against Native Americans at sporting events like high school games and non-Native teams with pseudo-Indian names and mascots. This data was compiled from news reports by the NYC New Service.

In light of recent clergy abuse scandals, cover-ups and leadership shake-downs, it is a divided time in the Catholic Church: but this isn’t the whole story. My final capstone project is a critical essay of how Catholicism (and religion overall) is represented in mainstream media--particularly in secular news publications and entertainment (horror films) in the United States. In 2015, a riot broke out at a federal prison in a small Texas town not far from the U.S.-Mexico border. Prisoners tore through the kevlar tents of their dorms and a fire broke out, rendering the private prison uninhabitable. The facility was an economic engine for the impoverished, Rio Grande Valley county, so when the facility closed, it left the county $2 million short of its estimated budget, with $78 million in unpaid bonds and 400 fewer jobs for a population of about 21,000 people. My hometown, Great Barrington, MA, has one famous former resident: NAACP co-founder W.E.B. Du Bois. For generations, his legacy in the predominantly white town was hardly acknowledged. People actively protested the landmarking of his birth site in the 1960s. When I was a kid, plans to name a new middle school after him were scrapped after the uproar grew too loud. Past research indicates that people often share awe-inspiring news online. However, little is known about the content of those stories. In this study, more broadly defined “inspirational” articles shared through The New York Times website over a 6-month period were analyzed, with the goals of describing the content and identifying characteristics that might predict inspirationality and measures of retransmission. The results provided a snapshot of content found within inspirational news stories; they also revealed that self-transcendent language use predicted the inspirationality of a news story, as well as how long an article appeared on a most shared list.

Cultural sharing has been expedited due to the rapid spread of social media in Saudi Arabia, one of the largest and most prosperous countries in the Middle East. Saudi citizens are extremely active on social media, and even government officials use it to share information. Through social media, Saudi citizens have been able to share their forward-thinking culture with the world and learn about other cultures. With social media being a prominent platform in the days of sharing information over the internet, it can affect one’s self-esteem if not careful. The current study examines the relationship of social media usage and self-esteem. From the 218 participants surveyed, results show that social media does have some influence on a person’s self-esteem. A person with a high self-esteem is more likely to use social media for finding entertaining content, promote products/services, and talk about their accomplishments, while a person with a low self-esteem will use it to not feel alone, but they do not post selfies. Silenced and broken, is a case study of high school counselors’ reactions to an original anti-bullying video that was put together by the present researcher. This study analyzed six-school counselors’ reactions from an original artifact. This four-minute video features: illustrations of graphic self-harm images, statistics on bullying, 12 victims who committed suicide as a result of bullying/cyber-bullying, and it conclude with an overall message to end all forms of bullying. School counselors gave reactions to the original anti-bullying video, which developed into several themes (i.e. isolation, emotional impact, insufficient technology, etc.). Periodicals In Transition: Politics And Style In Victorian Higher Journalism, David Blaine Walker

Covering a period roughly from the mid-1820s through the early-1880s, this dissertation investigates transformations in the style and substance of political discourse practiced in British organs of “higher journalism.” Animating certain key moments and figures along the way, it explains the shift from a periodical market dominated by the anonymous, lengthy treatises found in quarterly reviews like the Edinburgh Review (f. 1802) and its rivals, to an industry dominated by monthly reviews that generally eschewed both the anonymity of its contributors as well as the prohibitive length of its predecessors. Deutsch Wells’ Kyle McKinnon called her the “most famous teenager in the world” (McKinnon, 2013). Her name is Malala Yousafzai, and at the age of 14 she stood up to the Taliban for threatening her right to an education and was shot in the head. In less than a decade, she became one of the youngest and most influential activists, known to the world simply as Malala. As a Middle Easterner, Muslim and “media darling,” Malala is no doubt an interesting activist to study.

These people turned to social media, such as Facebook, to ask for help. At the same time, civilian rescuers turned to social media to find locations of people in need of rescuing.
