End The Nfl Blackout!, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2009

End The Nfl Blackout!, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past week there has been some comment on the NFL television blackout policy that prohibits the televising of home games in the home market unless there has been a sellout 72 hours in advance of kickoff. Some, including Richard Sandomir of the New York Times, have suggested that in this time of economic crisis, when it appears that the number of sellouts of NFL games will be dropping, that Commissioner Goodell should end or suspend the blackout policy. This is a reasonable sentiment, although one might question if offering more blood and circuses offers a viable solution to …

Distribution Of News Information Through Social Bookmarking: An Examination Of Shared Stories In The Delicious Website, Deborah S. Chung, Kwan Yi

Journalism and Media Faculty Publications

Introduction. This study examined the selection and sharing of news stories from Delicious, a popular social bookmarking site, in order to identify the most frequently consulted news information sources and news topics.

Method. Targeting US-specific sources through initial computer screening of URLs, we employed content analysis to further analyse story topics and sources that were unclassified through the initial computer screening method.

Analysis. After examining frequencies and percentages of the variables, a qualitative analysis was employed to assess relationships between story sources and story topics.

Results. Findings document the diverse nature of stories from both traditional and new media …

A Few Pointers From Veteran News Editors, Sue Burzynski Bullard Sep 2009

A Few Pointers From Veteran News Editors, Sue Burzynski Bullard

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Copy editors should stick this reminder on their computer screens: Never assume, never be timid. Editing requires an aggressive approach to stories because the copy desk is the last line of defense against factual errors, bad grammar, libel and simply having the newspaper look stupid. Common rookie errors include making assumptions and being too timid, say copy desk chiefs and veteran editors.

The Water Torture Of Baseball's Steroid Leaks, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 2009

The Water Torture Of Baseball's Steroid Leaks, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

When I was a young boy I remember using the term "Chinese water torture" for any activity that seemed long, torturous, and pointless. I have been reminded of this repeatedly over the last few years as slowly, usually one by one, the names of those baseball players who tested positive for some sort of performance enhancing drugs have become public. Anonymous and confidential drug testing that was conducted for Major League baseball and the MLB Players Association in 2003 to determine the extent of a drug problem in baseball has turned out to be not so confidential.

Communication Collaboration, Cohesion, And Decision Making: Perceived Differences Between Top Management Teams And Regular Work Teams, Elijah L. Murphy Aug 2009

Communication Collaboration, Cohesion, And Decision Making: Perceived Differences Between Top Management Teams And Regular Work Teams, Elijah L. Murphy

Communication ETDs

Differences in communication collaboration, cohesion and decision making between top teams and regular teams was investigated. An analysis of 253 members of top teams and regular teams was used to determine where these differences exist. To identify differences between these two groups a one way ANOVA was conducted. Additionally, a decision making scale was designed and evaluated using a confirmatory factor analysis. Collaboration was evaluated using measures of knowledge sharing, workgroup support and employee attitude. Cohesion was evaluated using measures of sense of belonging and morale. Decision making was evaluated using measures of authority rule, majority rule, consensus, and satisficing. …

On The Road Again: Photo Students Search For The "Real" Nebraska, Bruce Thorson Aug 2009

On The Road Again: Photo Students Search For The "Real" Nebraska, Bruce Thorson

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Media

"Migrant Mother," a photograph by Dorothea Lange that showed a mother struggling to survive with her three children in a lean-to in a migrant camp, became the iconic picture that symbolized the Great Depression in the 1930s. Today, our nation's economy has fallen to a historic level not seen since that traumatic period. Financial and housing markets and automakers have crumbled; unemployment has soared. This national recession has touched every American, including those who live in Nebraska.

The objective of this project is to produce photographs, audio slideshows and video that document how this economic upheaval has affected Nebraskans. We …

An Amazing Open, And An Obscenity In Arlington, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 2009

An Amazing Open, And An Obscenity In Arlington, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If you watched The Open from Turnberry this weekend there were two surprises: Tiger Woods didn’t make the cut and Tom Watson nearly won the tournament. It became obvious that Tiger wasn’t playing his A-game when in the middle of his second round he played himself out of the tournament. Woods was one under par after seven holes and then went bogey, bogey, double bogey, par, bogey, double bogey. He was hitting shots that any weekend duffer could relate to as he topped the ball, mishit the ball several times, and explored all of the varieties of the rough. It …

Fabulous Finals At Wimbledon, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 2009

Fabulous Finals At Wimbledon, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It’s been a week now since the finals were played at Wimbledon. On the women’s side the Williams sisters once again demonstrated to their opponents just how difficult it will be to win a tournament during which both of them are playing their normal game. On the men’s side Roger Federer entered the history books by winning his 15th Grand Slam event. As always Wimbledon offered a level of play that was memorable, and laid down new bench marks for high quality play and then reset the argumentative territory for the title “best Wimbledon match of all-time,” or at the …
