Political Modernism, Jabrā, And The Baghdad Modern Art Group, Nathaniel Greenberg
Political Modernism, Jabrā, And The Baghdad Modern Art Group, Nathaniel Greenberg
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Political Modernism, Jabrā, and the Baghdad Art Group" Nathaniel Greenberg discusses how the art and literature of the late Palestinian novelist Jabrā Ibrahīm Jabrā challenged the normative perception of Arab modernism both within and outside the Middle East. Greenberg evaluates the influence of French existentialism on Jabrā's political vision of modernism and discusses the impact and nature of existentialism on Jabrā and on the Middle East. Educated in Europe, Jabrā returned to the Middle East in 1948 to live permanently in Baghdad where he was a member of the influential Baghdad Modern Art Group, established in 1951 …
Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas
Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Haitian Zombie, Myth, and Modern Identity" Kette Thomas analyzes texts by Zora Neale Hurston, Alfred Metraux, and Wade Davis. In these narratives we are re-introduced to the zombie not as a metaphor for lost consciousness, but, rather, as a common system that replaces personal subjectivity with an influence alien to our natural development. The discourse on subjectivity has become a central focus in the modern era but attention to fiction in "third world" cultures is neglected because they are studied almost exclusively through historical, political, sociological, or anthropological lenses or because their collective identities leads scholars to …

The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal
The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary in Contemporary Bollywood Cinema" Vidhu Aggarwal discusses several contemporary films including Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's Rang de Basanti with focus on the figure of the revolutionary hero. The Bollywood film is a cultural form that combines several aesthetic styles, from within India and from the outside. With its formal heterogeneity and as a product of one of India's largest cities, Mumbai Bollywood has had an ongoing fascination with "arrival," that is, with India's status as a contemporary nation-state. While some Bollywood films seem to celebrate fantasy scenarios of India's arrival on the global scene, at …
Philosophy Of Modernity And Development In Jamaica, Novella Z. Keith, Nelson W. Keith
Philosophy Of Modernity And Development In Jamaica, Novella Z. Keith, Nelson W. Keith
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Philosophy of Modernity and Development in Jamaica" Novella Z. Keith and Nelson W. Keith postulate that a combined philosophico-practical inquiry is necessary to reduce the systemic asymmetries found in the North-South divide and to promote global interdependence. Proceeding from a deconstruction of European-inflected modernity, Keith and Keith sketch an alternative epistemology of uncertainty and unknowability and illustrate aspects of these epistemologies in theories and practices of modernization and its counter movements, dependency, and underdevelopment while also using them to discuss current practices of an NGO they created, Edu-Tourism , to bridge global divides as experienced in Jamaica. …

This resource cultivates effective cross-cultural communication skills, which requires an understanding of culture that includes both the physician's and the patient's perspectives. Building on a foundation of cultural awareness, knowledge, and skills students have acquired during the preclinical curriculum, this exercise provides an opportunity for students to continue to refine their narrative reflection skills as they interact with patients in the clinical setting. During the family medicine clerkship, students participate in learning activities that provide the opportunity to explore the rich opportunities of thoughtful reflection and narrative practice. Students also participate in a formative narrative reflection exercise during the clerkship …
A Spectrum Of Philosophies: The Rhetorical Framing Of Avant-Garde Art Manifestos Of The Early Twentieth Century, Alison Kara Falotico
A Spectrum Of Philosophies: The Rhetorical Framing Of Avant-Garde Art Manifestos Of The Early Twentieth Century, Alison Kara Falotico
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Studies of the manifesto genre are often based on an understanding of early political manifestos as exemplifying extreme left-wing political philosophies and argument typologies and utilizing the confrontational form. Many avant-garde artistic movements of the early twentieth century wrote manifestos to advocate for new approaches to art, design, and aesthetic education and production. Because there is a gap in present scholarship, these avant-garde art manifestos were incorrectly categorized under the preceded format of early political manifestos. This essay offers the argument that these early twentieth century avant-garde art manifestos actually lie across a spectrum (Rossiter’s Political Spectrum) and can exemplify …
Solace In St. Louis: A Case Study In Heroic Cultural Nostalgia, Amanda J. Pinney
Solace In St. Louis: A Case Study In Heroic Cultural Nostalgia, Amanda J. Pinney
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis examines the response of American popular culture to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. By utilizing the September 17, 2001 pre-game ceremony, held at Busch Stadium as a case study example, larger generalizations are made about the role popular culture played in the days following the tragedy. In order to analyze this example, I have developed heroic cultural nostalgia, a framework that combines elements of myth, nostalgia and national identity. Heroic cultural nostalgia provides an explanation of how popular culture plays a role in crisis response. The framework highlights the role of individuals with heroic characteristics in …

A Multi-Disciplinary Overview Of Chagas In Periurban Peru, Sarah Mccune, Angela M. Bayer, Gabrielle C. Hunter, Natalie M. Bowman, Juan G. Cornejo Del Carpio, Cesar Naquira, Robert H. Gilman, Caryn Bern, Michael Z. Levy
Journal of International and Global Studies
There are between 8 and 11 million cases of America Human Trypanosomiasis, commonly known as Chagas disease, in Latin America. Chagas is endemic in southern Peru, especially the Arequipa region, where it has expanded from poor, rural areas to periurban communities. This paper summarizes the findings of four studies in periurban Arequipa: on determinants of disease-vector infestation; on prevalence, spatial patterns, and risk factors of Chagas; on links between migration, settlement patterns, and disease-vector infestation; and on the relationship between discordant test results and spatially clustered transmission hotspots. These studies identified two risk factors associated with the disease: population dynamics …
Within-Group Ethnic Differences Of Black Male Stem Majors And Factors Affecting Their Persistence In College, Shane Y. Williamson Ed.D.
Within-Group Ethnic Differences Of Black Male Stem Majors And Factors Affecting Their Persistence In College, Shane Y. Williamson Ed.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
The present study examined how familial and institutional factors interact with the academic experiences of a diverse group of Black males enrolled as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors at one university. Ogbu’s (1998) Cultural-Ecological Theory of Minority School Performance, a theoretical framework, posits that the manner by which a group achieves minority status, coupled with community and family educational values, impacts academic achievement. Immigrants, voluntary minorities, perform better academically than involuntary minorities (nonimmigrants) because they are more accepting of and more likely to adapt to the White middle-class norms upon which schools in the United States are based …
The Art Of Governing The Self And Others In The Christian Philippines, Pak Nung Wong D.Phil.
The Art Of Governing The Self And Others In The Christian Philippines, Pak Nung Wong D.Phil.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Through an ethnographic depiction of cultural creolization, this paper will detail the ways in which traditional Filipino values have been successfully mixing with and eventually lodging into the intersubjective landscape of Cagayan Valley, where the Chinese, Ibanag, Ilocano, and Itawes ethnic groups dwell. This cultural creolization process informs the ways in which the imagined social reciprocity between the self and others has been governed by a historically constituted power/knowledge system: the padrino system. This system is mainly composed of the symbiotic codes and social practices of (1) Catholicized ritual kinship and (2) the Tagalog ethics of “debt of gratitude” (utang …

Theorizing Impending Peripheries: Postindustrial Landscapes At The Edge Of Hyper-Modernity’S Collapse, Ismael Vaccaro Ph.D.
Theorizing Impending Peripheries: Postindustrial Landscapes At The Edge Of Hyper-Modernity’S Collapse, Ismael Vaccaro Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This article discusses the ways in which the predominant economic mechanisms of capitalism, characterized by a hyper-mobility of flows, affect actual places and people. The rationality informing these mechanisms is the quest for a reduction of costs and the increase of potential benefit, and this can only be achieved by jumping from locale to locale searching for a cheaper labor force, new pools of resources, or an absence of environmental regulations. Mobility becomes the fundamental framework through which to understand modernity and its new economic articulations and their associated sovereignties. Anthropology has often discussed and theorized the impact of market …

Journal of International and Global Studies
This article examines the nature and changing pattern of relations between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea from 1980-2005. It states that relations between the countries improved tremendously in the quarter century covered in this study compared to the two decades preceding that time frame (1960-1980) due to of a number of domestic political and economic changes that occurred in both countries, as well as the transformation of the international system in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The paper explores the specific changes that took place in Nigerian-Equatorial Guinean relations from1980 onwards and the factors that influenced them. The termination of …

Mastering The Midas Touch: The Indo-Trinidadian Diaspora In North America And England, 1967-2007, Jerome Teelucksingh Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This article will assess the experiences of the Indo-Trinidadian immigrant population during 1967 to 2007. The displaced Indo-Trinidadians residing in North America and Britain were challenged to define themselves in relation to Afro-Caribbean and Asian-Indian immigrants. The broad categories used to determine the success or failure of migration included culture, social mobility, identity and religion. The research will prove that the Indo-Trinidadian diaspora in North America and England have experienced considerable social mobility and acculturation.

The Poetics Of The Ancestor Songs Of The Tz’Utujil Maya Of Guatemala, Linda O’Brien-Rothe Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This essay attempts to define the relationship between a song tradition that survives in the Mayan highlands of Guatemala, and 16th century poetic Mayan literature. This song tradition of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala is slowly disappearing as the socio-cultural context in which it flourished changes. By comparing the poetics of the song texts (including their rhythmic structure, versification, and use of poetic devices such as assonance, alliteration and onomatopoeia) to the poetics of the Popol Vuh, a K’iché Maya text probably copied from a manuscript that predates the Spanish invasion, a continuity is discovered that places the song texts squarely within …

Media Representation Of The Disabled : A Critical Discourse Approach., Ang Pei Soo
Media Representation Of The Disabled : A Critical Discourse Approach., Ang Pei Soo
Student Works (2010-2019)
This dissertation analyses the media representation of the social images of the disabled community in Malaysia using a critical discourse approach. It involves an analysis of 179 texts from a mainstream press, The Star, dated 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2005. Adopting Norman Fairclough’s 3-Dimensional framework (1995), the study examines the textual and intertextual features of texts. The former focuses on lexical choices namely euphemism, evaluative terms and metaphorical expressions; the latter reviews the inclusion of discourse representation and the texturing of charity discourse in news and articles published. Findings reveal that the disabled self has been misrepresented by …
Responses Of Young Adult Grandchildren To Grandparents’ Painful Self-Disclosures, Craig Frowler, Jordan Soliz
Responses Of Young Adult Grandchildren To Grandparents’ Painful Self-Disclosures, Craig Frowler, Jordan Soliz
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This study examined grandchildren’s relational and communicative responses to grandparents’ painful self-disclosures (PSDs). From the perspective of young adult grandchildren (N = 297), dis-comfort with PSDs is more significant in differentiating positive and negative aspects of the grandparent-grandchild relationship than simply the occurrence of such disclosures. Furthermore, results reveal that the family communication environment and communicative responsiveness of the grandchild are important factors in predicting discomfort with PSDs as well as grandchildren’s communication with grandparents.
Literary Studies From Hermeneutics To Media Culture Studies, Siegfried J. Schmidt
Literary Studies From Hermeneutics To Media Culture Studies, Siegfried J. Schmidt
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Studies from Hermeneutics to Media Culture Studies" Siegfried J. Schmidt discusses aspects of hermeneutics, the systemic and empirical (contextual) approach to literature and culture, radical constructivism, and his postulates for the field of media culture studies. Schmidt describes his understanding of the transformation of literary studies towards media culture studies in the context of overall developments of society. His argumentation with regard to move from hermeneutics to media culture studies offers the postulate that research ought to be empirical and contextual in order to foster intuition, invention, innovation, and socially relevant scholarship. He concludes that the …

Anti-Nationalism In Scott's Old Mortality, Montserrat Martínez García
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Anti-Nationalism in Scott's Old Mortality," Montserrat Martínez García examines national identity through war in Walter Scott's Old Mortality in order to illustrate that war was one of the main catalysts of nationhood and show, simultaneously, the disparity between the institutional and the popular attitude toward war. Martínez García pays attention to the way Scott portrayed war and identity and to what extent this literary representation coincided with or faced the uniform ideology of nationalism. Based on the historical background of the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, Martínez García analyses Scott's novel to uncover focus his narrative of cracks …

Sartre, Marcuse, And The Utopian Project Today, Robert T. Tally Jr.
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Sartre, Marcuse, and the Utopian Project Today," Robert T. Tally Jr. discusses the philosophical legacy of the May 1968 revolution in Paris with respect to the power of the imagination and the possibilities for utopian thought in our own time. Although the rhetoric of the 1968 militants may seem dated, the underlying theoretical and political concepts are surprisingly timely in the twenty-first century. Among these, existential angst or anxiety has perhaps a heightened salience in the era of globalization and of global economic crisis, and the utopian desire for a life without anxiety has become more pressing. …
