Carceral Liberalism: Feminist Voices Against State Violence, Andrea Michaels Aug 2024

Carceral Liberalism: Feminist Voices Against State Violence, Andrea Michaels

Feminist Pedagogy

The following book review of Shreerekha Pillai’s Carceral Liberalism: Feminist Voices against State Violence (2023) is an expansive and timely collection of essays on the carceral state in its implications for feminist educators. This review focuses on the connections and connectivity of two essays in the collection that attempt to address a minor examination of the person as political.

Review Of Theatre Of The Oppressed - Roots & Wings: A Theory Of Praxis, Uri Yitzchak Noy Meir

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

Theatre of the Oppressed - Roots & Wings: A Theory of Praxis by Barbara Santos is a necessary, previously unwritten, ontology of Theatre of the Oppressed with a feminist twist. It is a gift and a fantastic resource.

Book Review Of The Routledge Companion To Theatre Of The Oppressed, Amy Phillips Oct 2021

Book Review Of The Routledge Companion To Theatre Of The Oppressed, Amy Phillips

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

In my review of The Routledge Companion to Theatre of the Oppressed by Boal, J., Howe, K., and Soerio, J., eds. (London and New York: Routledge, 2019), I compare the book’s call for Theatre of the Oppressed to embrace a nuanced investigation of social problems with its response: the international movements detailed in its chapters. While demonstrating that the first-hand accounts provide a measured answer to contradictions inherent in a system which Augusto Boal developed in response to a specific political climate, I emphasize the beauty of theory and practice sitting side by side, in paradox, and encourage scholar and …

Book Review: Learning To Write "Indian": The Boarding-School Experience And American Indian Literature, Bruce E. Johansen Oct 2006

Book Review: Learning To Write "Indian": The Boarding-School Experience And American Indian Literature, Bruce E. Johansen

Communication Faculty Publications

In a twist on assimilation, many boarding school students used the English language, a primary tool of colonization, to "talk back" to the system. As surely as the boarding-schools' inventors understood that language is the vessel of culture, none of them gave much thought to the ways in which Native Americans would use English to critique the schools into which many of them had been unwillingly enrolled.

Their writings, examined by Amelia Katanski, indicate that the boarding-school students were unwilling to surrender as victims. Learning English describes how Native American students in boarding schools often forged new identities, taking a …

On Chris Lehmann's Revolt Of The Masscult, George Ciccariello Maher Apr 2006

On Chris Lehmann's Revolt Of The Masscult, George Ciccariello Maher

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The good folks at Prickly Paradigm are certainly doing their job. Their stated objective is “publishing challenging and sometimes outrageous pamphlets,” and Lehmann's short piece fulfills this claim brilliantly, evoking intellectual mood swings that span from shouting for joy at a particularly lucid formulation to shouting angrily at the deftness with which Lehmann transforms his lucidity into suspiciously wrongheaded and reactionary assessments. The clinical bipolarity of this work, as we will see, is no coincidence: it is precisely the political entanglement of the subject of mass culture (“masscult”) that leads to both respect for one's opponents and suspicion …

On Ethan Watter's Urban Tribes: A Generation Redefines Friendship, Family And Commitment, Danny Mayer Jul 2005

On Ethan Watter's Urban Tribes: A Generation Redefines Friendship, Family And Commitment, Danny Mayer

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Outside of the 60s generation, there are few if any generational groupings as well known and discussed as Generation X, the term coined by Douglas Copeland to describe the generation approaching adulthood in the post-Reagan boom-years of the 1990s. As the subject of books (Generation X), movies (Reality Bites, Clerks, Slacker), TV dramas and sitcoms (Seinfeld, Friends, Ally McBeal, Sex and the City), and Prime Time news specials, there is seemingly little new to say about Gen X. It has long since been tagged as a generation …

On Bill V. Mullen's Afro-Orientalism, Graham Barnfield Apr 2005

On Bill V. Mullen's Afro-Orientalism, Graham Barnfield

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

For two decades Edward Said's Orientalism has occupied a significant place in how we think through the cultural relations between what we now call ‘North’ and ‘South’. Conceived in the 1970s, Said’s model mounted a challenge to readers in the west, suggesting they should unlearn what they know of the east. Despite its influence, one weakness of this approach was the underlying suggestion that orientalism was a one-way street, constituting a fixed set of perceptions or timeless discourses. In and without the Orientalist imagination, what is to be done with those in ‘the Occident’ who find themselves treated …

Reading Owen's Between Reason And History: Habermas And The Idea Of Progress , Ali Rizvi Jan 2005

Reading Owen's Between Reason And History: Habermas And The Idea Of Progress , Ali Rizvi

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

From the start Habermas' work has been an attempt at synthesising certain core insights from Kant and Hegel, as it is clearly evident from the beginning chapters of his first major work Knowledge and Human Interest (KHI). In the structure of the book Marx's position is as the mediator of Kant and Hegel and all subsequent authors are considered in order to overcome the shortcomings of this Marxian mediation (KHI: chapter 1-11, Habermas, 1982: 239ff Cf. Kortian, 1980).

A Privatization Of Politics: Anthony Elliot's Concepts Of The Self (2001), Paula Murphy Oct 2004

A Privatization Of Politics: Anthony Elliot's Concepts Of The Self (2001), Paula Murphy

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

It would be difficult to find a more appropriate image of selfhood in the modern world than that found in Ezra Pound's poem In a Station of the Metro. It is a selfhood which is at once unique and conglomerative, fleetingly visible then tantalizingly out of focus. It is this slippery, indefinable entity that is the subject of Anthony Elliot's book. The title bears witness to the enormous breadth of its subject matter: Concepts of the Self is an attempt to engage with the various contemporary theoretical frameworks through which selfhood is explicated. Elliot's approach is admirably inter-disciplinary, …

On Cary Wolfe's Animal Rites And Zoontologies, Matthew Wolf-Meyer Jul 2004

On Cary Wolfe's Animal Rites And Zoontologies, Matthew Wolf-Meyer

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The question of the category of the animal and its relation to that of the human is one that has recently surfaced in the work of such theorists as Jacques Derrida, Donna Haraway and Giorgio Agamben; this recent concern with the speciesism that underlies scientific categorization, and the faulty structure such speciesism lends for philosophical investigations into the qualities of Man, has largely been framed within the context of humanism and the problematic of articulating posthumanist ethics. Reductively, the concerns of the above authors are the ways in which the difference that has been constructed between the human …
