At The Crossroads Of Hualapai History, Memory, And American Colonization: Contesting Space And Place, Jeffrey Shepherd Jan 2008

At The Crossroads Of Hualapai History, Memory, And American Colonization: Contesting Space And Place, Jeffrey Shepherd

Selected Works Temporary Series

This essay argues that the colonization of the Americas involved not only physical and economic dimensions, but also spatial and historical components. As the Hualapai in Arizona contested colonization, they presented myriad forms of their own history in an effort to remain tied to traditional landscapes. However, as they articulated these histories, they implicitly accepted a metanarrative of their own past that reflected the modernist tropes of nationalism and cultural essentialism. Although they successfully held onto their reservation they simultaneously created an ambiguous legacy rooted in self-determination and contradictory strands of historical memory. Their anti-colonial resistance thwarted the extremes of …

American Shamans: Journeys With Traditional Healers, Jack G. Montgomery Jr. Jan 2008

American Shamans: Journeys With Traditional Healers, Jack G. Montgomery Jr.

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Book Gallery

Magical healings, ghostly encounters, and alternate realities have been a part of American society since the first colonial settlements. Author Jack Montgomery provides ample historical and personal material to reveal a largely hidden world, primarily influenced by African, Celtic and German roots, that still exists today. It is a spiritual journey into the depths of American folk religion, shamanism and applied mysticism that spans over three decades of research.

Island Culture: The Role Of The Blasket Autobiographies In The Preservation Of A Traditional Way Of Life, Eamon Maher Jan 2008

Island Culture: The Role Of The Blasket Autobiographies In The Preservation Of A Traditional Way Of Life, Eamon Maher

Articles

The Blasket Islands, located off the west coast of Kerry, are remarkable for having inspired a flourishing literature, mainly autobiographical in nature, which is generally acknowledged as being of great anthropological value, as well as of significant literary merit. When one considers that the islands never had a population of more than around 160 persons (with an average of closer to half that number) during the years covered by the autobiographies, the existence of such an important chronicle of the simple and at times perilous life on these Atlantic outposts is all the more noteworthy. The language spoken on the …

Why “Good Welfare” Isn’T “Good Enough”: Minding Animals And Increasing Our Compassionate Footprint, Marc Bekoff Jan 2008

Why “Good Welfare” Isn’T “Good Enough”: Minding Animals And Increasing Our Compassionate Footprint, Marc Bekoff

Animal Welfare Collection

In this brief essay I take a broad perspective on the notion of unraveling welfare and consider animals living in different conditions ranging from caged individuals in laboratories and zoos to free-living or almost free-living wildlife. I’ll step outside of the laboratory because billions of animals are slaughtered for food in an industry that tortures them on the way to their reprehensible deaths and at the places at which they are slaughtered. Furthermore, government agencies around the world kill millions of free-living and wild animals because they’re supposedly “pests”. This is a different sort of essay but I hope it …
