Salva La Iglesia: Intercultural Capital And The Struggle For Community In A Small Town Congregation, Maria E. Schwarz May 2013

Salva La Iglesia: Intercultural Capital And The Struggle For Community In A Small Town Congregation, Maria E. Schwarz

Senior Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine community response to crisis and the impact of intercultural interactions on the outcome of ethnic and religious group conflict. I seek to expand the traditional theoretical lens of forms of capital (Bourdieu, 1986) to include a new way of examining group interactions as they relate to intercultural capital. I use a case study focusing on the San Martín Catholic Mission in western Oregon and the ways this particular community responded to the crisis of the Catholic diocese threatening to sell their property in 2010. I gathered data from a year of ethnographic …

Archeological Investigations For The Levi Jordan Plantation House Stabilization, Brazoria County, Texas, Jennifer K. Mcwilliams, Douglas K. Boyd, Aaron Norment May 2013

Archeological Investigations For The Levi Jordan Plantation House Stabilization, Brazoria County, Texas, Jennifer K. Mcwilliams, Douglas K. Boyd, Aaron Norment

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Levi Jordan plantation house is one of the few antebellum plantation structures to have survived in Brazoria County. It is the only standing structure associated with the plantation, which began operating in 1848 and was occupied continually up through the 1990s. The original house, built in the early 1850s using slave labor, was a 20x60-ft two-story wooden frame structure. It was altered many times during its long occupation, often due to hurricane damage. A portion of the Levi Jordan Plantation was acquired by the State of Texas in 2002 and managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department until …

The Emergence Of The Brics – Implications For Global Governance, Sotiris Petropoulos Ph.D. May 2013

The Emergence Of The Brics – Implications For Global Governance, Sotiris Petropoulos Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The global financial crisis of 2008, with its detrimental effects on the global economy, was the starting point of a transformation of the global governance landscape. This fluid political and economic global environment seems to be leading to the enhancement of the position of regional powers, especially within the developing world. Hence, the importance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and, to some extent, South Africa, within the global governance structure has increased. This rise of importance is derived from the enhancement of the economic capabilities of these powers and the fact that economic interdependence has rendered the world more sensitive …

Iberian Globalization And The Rise Of Catholic Theology Of Religions In The Xvi Century, Enrico Beltramini Ph.D. May 2013

Iberian Globalization And The Rise Of Catholic Theology Of Religions In The Xvi Century, Enrico Beltramini Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article provides a synthetic view of the historical and theological components that explain how Catholicism came to understand the great religious systems in Asia as doctrinally inferior during the sixteenth century in response to the discovery/invasion of the “New Worlds” by Iberian Europeans.2 A strong emphasis on the universal salvific will of God led Catholic theologians to elaborate a doctrine that ultimately altered Catholicism’s understanding of non-Christian religions. 3 The article suggests that the predominant Catholic view of non-Christian religions has been shaped by a specific theological vision that was raised in sixteenth century Southern Europe. In order to …

Deprivation And Resistance: Environmental Crisis, Political Action, And Conflict Resolution In The Niger Delta Since The 1980s, David Aworawo Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The interlocking relationship between environmental degradation, poverty, and violent conflict has been a prominent theme contained within the literature on sustainable development and conflict resolution since the mid-twentieth century. While some analysts have argued that violence has not been limited to the poor and deprived, many have concluded from various studies that the devastation of the environment, poverty, and conflict are inextricably intertwined. This article examines this theme by analyzing the pattern of violence and nature of conflict resolution in the oil-producing enclave of the Niger Delta in the past three decades. A report of the United Nations Environment Programme …

Bird Bone Taphonomy In The Tse-Whit-Zen Site, Marielle Lara Orff May 2013

Bird Bone Taphonomy In The Tse-Whit-Zen Site, Marielle Lara Orff

Senior Honors Projects

Tse-whit-zen is a large well preserved archaeological site that was discovered in August 2003 in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. By 2004 an archaeological dig crew was working tirelessly on the site, which turned out to be one of the largest Native American villages ever found in the Pacific Northwest. This village was shown to have been inhabited by the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, whose descendants still continue to live in the region. The site was occupied for thousands of years, with the oldest material dated at 2,700 years ago and the youngest at 100 years ago when the …

Comparison Of Two Nineteenth-Century Native American Cultures Through The Analysis Of Pottery, Aislinn Clements May 2013

Comparison Of Two Nineteenth-Century Native American Cultures Through The Analysis Of Pottery, Aislinn Clements

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

Fort Mims and Holy Ground are two contemporary nineteenth-century sites occupied by Native Americans on opposite sides of the Creek Indian War. Pottery assemblages from each site were gathered and compared to determine similarity. It was found that both sites continued to use traditional Native American pottery, but in different quantities. Fort Mims used less decorated, more utilitarian vessels, whereas Holy Ground continued to use more complicated vessels. The main difference in the two sites came from the amount of European-style pottery: Fort Mims had more than twice the amount of European than Native American pottery, but Holy Ground had …

Sleeping, Napping And Staying Up: The Meanings Of Sleep Among College Students, Natasha Tate May 2013

Sleeping, Napping And Staying Up: The Meanings Of Sleep Among College Students, Natasha Tate

HIM 1990-2015

Throughout public discourse, sleep, despite being a physiological function and an important facet of an individual's health, is frequently utilized as a rhetorical device to comment on an individual's productivity within society. As Antje Richter (2003:34) explains, to consider someone early to rise yet late to bed is less a comment on their sleeping behavior and more an assessment of their dedication to their business. Too often productivity is conveyed as existing in the absence of sleep, an idea that has contributed to the association of sleep with laziness (Yi 2003:60) and a general misuse of time (Richter 2003:36). The …

Biopiracy And Vaccines: Indonesia And The World Health Organization’S New Pandemic Influenza Plan, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D. May 2013

Biopiracy And Vaccines: Indonesia And The World Health Organization’S New Pandemic Influenza Plan, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Viral samples of avian influenza are essential to preparing pre-pandemic vaccines. In 2007, the conflicting interests of the developed and developing nations led Indonesia to briefly stop sharing viral samples. The result was a struggle in which the two blocs argued for different paradigms for viral sample sharing. The first paradigm, articulated by the developed world, depicted the issue as one of health security, in which international law mandated the sharing of viral samples. The second paradigm, advanced by the developing world, depicted viral sample sharing as a form of biopiracy, which violated countries’ sovereign control of their biological resources. …

French In Madagascar: A Colonial Language After Independence, Christopher Roehrer-Macgregor May 2013

French In Madagascar: A Colonial Language After Independence, Christopher Roehrer-Macgregor

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The French first landed off the south-eastern coast of Madagascar in December of 1648. A little over two and a half centuries later they would land troops, marking the beginning of sixty years of colonization. The groundwork for government and education set during these years continues to the present day, including the use of the French language. In this study I look at the role of the French language in modern-day Madagascar. Using interviews from two major urban centers, I argue that French has a dualistic role, both as an opportunity for self-advancement for a select few, while also as …

Technological Adaptation On The Frontier: An Examination Of Blacksmithing At Fort Michilimackinac, 1715-1781, Amy S. Roache-Fedchenko

Anthropology - Dissertations

This research examines the blacksmith and his work within the 18th century fur trade community at Fort Michilimackinac (1715-1781). Located at the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, this fortified trading post was important to the French (1715-1760) and British (1761-1781) fur trade economies in North America. Archaeological data and historic documents describing the use, trade, and demand for iron products at Fort Michilimackinac are used to understand the blacksmith and his work within the 18th century fur trade frontier and the wider socioeconomic landscape of which he was part. Blacksmiths were essential in supporting the material needs …

Estate By Estate: The Landscape Of The 1733 St. Jan Slave Rebellion, Holly Kathryn Norton

Anthropology - Dissertations

This historical archaeological investigation looks at the 1733 St. Jan Slave Rebellion in the Danish West Indies. This rebellion, which lasted for eight months, was approached via "Archaeology of Event" and was investigated using the archaeological survey, historical documentary analysis, and Geographic Information Systems. Among the topics discussed are the conditions for rebellion, the social structure of the island in the years leading up to the event, how the built environment reflected this social structure, and the consequences of rebellion for the island.

Local Food And Power Dynamics In Southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, Christina Mello May 2013

Local Food And Power Dynamics In Southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, Christina Mello

Anthropology ETDs

Various types of food security' projects essentially deliver little in the way of real opportunities for local food security among Southeast residents in Grand Rapids, MI. Nonetheless, developers justifying their gentrifying efforts are increasingly funded through large grants and public dollars by actually purporting themselves to seek solutions to reducing food insecurity in these Southeast neighborhoods. 'Community,' 'local,' 'sustainability,' and 'social justice' are common terms marketed as values to promote urban redevelopment, food security initiatives, and to sell local food. Food growers and activists challenge how these terms are defined and used for profiteering. Thus, there are competing value systems …
