Racialized environmentalism and politicized economics converged in July and August, 2000, when a coalition of Thai farmers, Royal Forestry Department (RFD) and other government officials blocked off roads leading to Hmong farms in the mountains in Thailand. This coalition collaboratively targeted Hmong lychee orchards that had almost reached maturation (it takes lychee trees 10 years to fully mature). According to my respondents, the Thais who cut down the trees came from three mountain villages that overlook the mountain valley where the fields are. Pipe Smoking Among The Prehistoric Inhabitants Of Utah Valley, Hannah Steffensen, Dr. Michael Searcy

In the Spring of 2012, thirtynine prehistoric smoking pipes and pipe fragments were recovered from the Fremont archaeological site of Wolf Village in Goshen, Utah. Brigham Young University has conducted excavations at the Wolf Village site for five years, recovering hundreds of thousands of artifacts and excavating the largest known Fremont pithouse.

The Ojibwe Living Culture The Importance Of Traditional Culture On The White Earth Reservation, Minnesota, Keara Moyle, Dr. John Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Within the last two decades, the White Earth reservation of Ojibwe has seen a dramatic resurgence of interest in and performance of what they would call traditional culture. This traditional culture has played a critical role in tribal membership and concepts of identity. The White Earth reservation underwent constitutional reform from 2007 to November 2013, which included new legislation determining membership. After years of an imposed policy of blood quantum, White Earth residents are basing their membership on a system, considered by some, to closely follow the traditional ways of determining tribal membership.

Since 1901, the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers have endeavored to keep the history and achievements of their pioneer ancestors alive. Part of their mission is to collect artifacts, histories, manuscripts and other important data relative to the Utah pioneers and their surrounding communities, and to preserve and display these in both their central Pioneer Memorial Museum in Salt Lake City and in over 100 satellite museums throughout Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada and Utah. Hmong of Thailand find themselves at the beginning of the 21st century embedded in a unique religious context. Though traditionally, Hmong people have practiced a mixture of spirit rituals and ancestral worship known as Dab Qhuas shamanism, in an increasingly globalized world these traditional practices have in some cases given way as Hmong in some locales are beginning to convert to other religions. Although Thailand does not have a significant Christian population, Western Christianity has begun to take seed among this people. The mainstay of the North American fur trade was cloth, which composed at one time over half of the goods shipped out of Montreal for trade with Native Americans. However, this cloth rarely survives in archaeological context, leaving only other artifacts that yield limited information on the textiles that once existed at a site. Among these artifacts are lead seals, which functioned much in the same way as modern day clothing tags, with lettering and symbols that reveal information such as the origin, quality, and quantity of the cloth to which they were once attached.

The Impact Of Western Popular Music On Indian Music Culture In Visakhapatnam, Darrik Cheney, Dr. Charles W. Neckolls

This project was aimed at gathering ethnographic data by identifying trends in popular music preferences among youth in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh, specifically with western influences in mind. In addition to this, this study was paired with a study of footwear production and repair was undertaken. Analyzing these two different cross sections of the cultural climate of youth in Visakhapatnam yielded results suggestive of overall trends.

The growing popularity of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) on nearly every continent has given rise to the transition of EDM music from underground raves to large scale, multiple-day music festivals. The research preliminarily examines the embodied implications of a vulnerable relationship –Samburu grandparents and their young caregivers in the context of contemporary intercommunity violence, globalization, and resource scarcity. While children are recognized caregivers of adults in numerous contexts cross-culturally, including in developed nations like the U.S. and Britain, research on this issue is scant within anthropology and recent in other fields such as geography, medicine, and public health, where it has developed primarily since the 1990s.

Local migration in developing-world settings, particularly among rural populations, is an important yet understudied demographic process. Research on migration in such populations can help us test and inform anthropological and demographic theory. Furthermore, it can lead to a better understanding of modern population distributions and epidemiologic landscapes.
