Global Flows And The Globalization Of Nothing: Synthesizing The Incongruous, Elliott H. Valentine

Increasingly pertinent in contemporary society, globalization is a force that promises to change the way people interact with others in almost all aspects of life. As scholars attempt to theorize about such situations, disparate perspectives about the dynamics and possibilities of globalization arise. In order to develop a more comprehensive theory of globalization, this piece engages the theory of global flows and the five “-scapes” as presented in Arjun Appadurai’s Modernity at Large (1996), as well as George Ritzer’s conception of the globalization of nothing as presented in The Globalization of Nothing 2 (2007). The United States has incarcerated more of its citizens than any other progressive nation worldwide. The female population of prisoners has dramatically risen over the past thirty years. Structural violence, childhood trauma, socioeconomic factors, education, and healthcare are all reasons for the rise in numbers of female inmates. I conducted an ethnographic study, collecting life histories of three women who have recently been released from Dallas County Jail. These women have also participated in a program provided through the jail called Resolana. This project involves interviewing French taxpayers in an attempt to see if there is a connection between nutritional decisions and the amount of taxes in France. France has the best healthcare system in the world but also some of the highest taxes. This study takes into consideration the quantitative but also the qualitative data from participants so as to understand the personal effects of taxes upon nutritional decisions.

In this paper I develop a working theory of gender as a constantly performed state of social mimicry that evolves in response to one’s lived experience. Through analysis of transcript selections from the daily lives of two co-fathered families and relevant literature, I explore the gendered realities of gay parents, and introduce work, in this case referring to professional labor and its associated identities, as key to the gendering process. This dissertation explored changes in structure, governance, perception and practice within Florida's child welfare system over a ten-year period (2001-2011) inclusive of two concurrent, statewide reform efforts: the privatization of child welfare services and implementation of a Title IV-E Waiver Demonstration. Using an anthropological perspective and holistic approach, the child welfare system is presented as a type of meta-organizational culture inclusive of subsystems and subcultures which are all embedded in historical and socioeconomic context that involves alternations between child safety and family preservation approaches to care.

The Mississippi County Nurse Midwife Program began during a conversation between two people in 1974. The agency was originally organized to improve access to medical care for women in Blytheville, Arkansas. However, it quickly evolved into a tool of changing deep seated attitudes of mistrust of male dominated orthodox medicine among poor and minority women. The effectiveness of the agency is founded in the acceptance of nurse-midwifery into the family of orthodox medical practice. From past work designed to categorize humans into phenotype-based categories to current work to undo those categorizations, many anthropologists consider race to be one of the most important topics for students to learn. The 2009 pandemic of H1N1 influenza led people around the globe to create narratives about the epidemic defined by the question of trust; these narratives ranged from true conspiracy theories to simply accounts in which mistrust and betrayal formed a motif. In particular, most of these narratives reflected a fear of capitalism and globalization, although in specific regions, other issues—such as religion—played a more central role. These stories were not unique to the H1N1 pandemic but rather have appeared with every contemporary outbreak of infectious disease. Asian International Students’ College Experience: Relationship Between Quality Of Personal Contact And Gains In Learning, Krishna Bista Ed.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This study examines associations between Asian international students’ quality of personal contact and gains in learning. Based on a sample of 705 Asian international students, results indicate that Asian international students’ relationships with peers, faculty, and administrative staff are positively associated with five domains of gains of learning (i.e., personal development, science and technology, general education, vocational preparation, and intellectual skills). Academic level, length of stay, and country of origin predicted gains in learning when all independent variables were included in the model. Implications for the positive college experience for Asian students are discussed.
