Cattle finishing is an enterprise involving the feeding of cattle to improve their slaughter condition. This can be accomplished by gazing cattle on pasture alone, by supplementing pasture with concentrated feeds, and by feeding harvested crops to cattle in yards. The latter method is one commonly used in Utah.

Broiler production in the United States and in Utah has become increasingly important in the last few years. It has developed from virtual nonexistence in 1930 to the point where it now produces more than half of the total chicken meat production. Growth has been especially rapid since 1934, when separate statistics on broiler production became available. In 1951, production was about 6 times that of 1940 and for the first time the number of broilers raised exceeded the number of chickens raised from farm production.

The survey was conducted in an attempt to secure a representative and objective picture of the 1942 farm labor situation, the probable 1943 farm labor situation and the influence of present and probable labor and machinery shortages on farm production plans for 1943. The reports from the 1101 farmers cover only their farms.

Following the extreme drought of 1934, the Nebraska Pasture Contest was organized to collect information, improve grasslands, and disseminate information on pasture management. Elvin Frolik and A. W. Peterson devised questionnaires administered by county agents. Data was entered on IBM punch cards, mechanically sorted, tabulated, and printed. This study deals with the farm management phase.

The land transfers in twelve counties in Nebraska for the period 1928 to 1933 have been studied and the findings are submitted in this bulletin. The data on which the study is based were obtained from records in the office of the Register of Deeds in each county and from other sources and include transfers which occurred during the period indicated. The counties included in the study are Boone, Cass, Cuming, Dakota, Dawes, Frontier, Gage, Hamilton, Harlan, Lancaster, Nuckolls, and Valley.

Farmers choose the crops they grow for two principal users; namely, for feed production or for cash income, or for both feed and cash income. It is true that some crops are grown for cover-crops, soil building, weed competition and a multitude of other miscellaneous purposes, many of them of equal or greater importance in the individual case than the two uses of crops which are the basis for this analysis. Crop production in South Dakota has been discussed since the first records of yields were available. the usual unit for production was the legal bushel of a specified weight.
