Determining A "Fair" Beef Cow Lease Agreement When Risk Is Considered, Dillon Feuz
Determining A "Fair" Beef Cow Lease Agreement When Risk Is Considered, Dillon Feuz
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
This publication is intended to illustrate a method of determining a fair lease agreement. The budget and coefficients were representative of a particular resource base in 1989. Individual producers may have very different costs and production coefficients for their cow herds. As author, I do not wish to imply that lease agreements should be based on the same proportion of receipts as depicted in this example budget. There also is an example of a written lease agreement in an appendix at the end of the manuscript. This is only an example to illustrate the type of issues the two parties …

Agriculture's Economic Performance, Ross Kingwell
Agriculture's Economic Performance, Ross Kingwell
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Changes within and outside of agriculture have affected the nature and econoicperforrmance of the industry. Some clear trends have emerged and they are discussed here.
As Australian economy grows and increasingly diversifies, agriculture will become a less important sector.
However, as long as agriculture fulfils its economic role, it will support and promote economic development elsewhere in the country.

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
When the Uruguay Round was launched in 1986, those of us who were present expected it to be completed in four years. Regrettably it took seven. The delay reflects the turmoil and disruptions of a global recession, termination of the Cold War, and political turnover among some of the major trading nations. But persistence paid off, this very ambitious Round is now successfully concluded, and the world will be better off for it.

Analysis And Forecasting Of Seasonal Changes In Cash Prices For Corn, Wheat, And Oats Grown In South Dakota, Prashobh Karunakaran
Analysis And Forecasting Of Seasonal Changes In Cash Prices For Corn, Wheat, And Oats Grown In South Dakota, Prashobh Karunakaran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The overall objective of this study is to identify the seasonal patterns in S.D. cash prices (received by farmers) for corn, wheat, and oats. Seasonality in S.D. cash prices may be different from the seasonality in the U.S. cash prices for a commodity. The reasons for this may be differences in the seasonal supply and demand for the commodity and the supply and demand for substitutes. The availability and price of storage and transportation can also have substantial impact on regional commodity price seasonality. Therefore, it is important that the relationship between the seasonal fluctuations in S.D. cash prices and …

Wasteland Development And The Empowerment Of Women: The Sarthi Experience, Madhu Sarin
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDS describes an innovative approach to rehabilitation of wastelands developed by Social Action for Rural and Tribal Inhabitants of India (SARTHI), a nongovernmental organization based in the Panchmahals District of Gujarat State in Western India. By assisting rural women to organize themselves around the rehabilitation of patches of degraded common land, SARTHI has been able to help them not only meet their needs for biomass in a more efficient and ecologically sound manner, but also to empower them to start asserting themselves in dealing with a broader range of problems. As primary gatherers and users of biomass, …

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1992., Central Bank Of Nigeria
CBN Annual Report
In 1992, Nigeria's economy faced significant pressures but showed resilience, with rapid growth in output and economic liquidity. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intensified efforts to achieve inflation and exchange rate stability while improving the efficiency of the financial sector. The financial sector experienced rapid growth and structural changes, with the strongest growth occurring in common unity banking and mortgage finance institutions. Monetary and credit aggregates expanded at unprecedented rates, matching the all-time highs of the oil boom era of the mid-seventies. Interest rates rose significantly, with both deposit and lending rates rising in tandem with the movements of …

Underlying Values And Beliefs "Modern Science" Versus "Sustainable Development", Donald Taylor
Underlying Values And Beliefs "Modern Science" Versus "Sustainable Development", Donald Taylor
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
This article focuses on personal values and beliefs that critically underlie the "sustainable development" controversy and on the implications of those values and beliefs to personal and professional decision-making. The issues are presented through two contrasting paradigms: a "modern scientific worldview" (MSW) and a "sustainable development worldview" (SDW). MSW is intended to characterize the perspectives of most current-day academics, development practitioners, businessmen, and everyday citizens. SDW characterizes those disenchanted with MSW. Their disenchantment arises from concerns over possible adverse long-term implications of decisions arising from MSW which tend to be dominated by relatively immediate, narrowly based, and self-interested considerations. The …

Differences In Longitudinal Union Relative Wage Effects Across Gender And Race, Dwight Adamnson
Differences In Longitudinal Union Relative Wage Effects Across Gender And Race, Dwight Adamnson
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
This paper utilizes longitudinal union variables to examine the gender differences in the wage change from entering and leaving the union sector, as well as gender differences from remaining with a union employer and advancing up the seniority ladder. The union effects are estimated over a time trend from the late 19608 to the early 19808. The empirical results show that the female union joiner effect declines over time while the magnitude of the male union effect remains fairly stable over time. In general, the results show that unions' ability to impact wages for all white workers and black female …

Divestiture, By-Pass, Entry, Cross Subsidization: Conflicting Forces In The Deregulation Of The South Dakota Telecommunications Market, Dwight Adamnson, Jack Triweiler
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
This study reviews the impact the divestiture of AT&T had on the South Dakota telecommunications market, and explains the technological changes that have occurred and how these changes have been translated into lower costs. The South Dakota telecommunications market is examined under the scenarios: 1) fully regulated; 2) partial regulation; and 3) unregulated market. ARIMA procedures are used to forecast changes in revenues under the two different regulatory schemes. The degree of contestability of the South Dakota Telecommunications market is investigated to determine if competitions is suitable for the unregulated scenario. The study argues that the market is competitive.

Retained Ownership Revisited: The Economic Significance Of Genetic Variability, Dillon Feuz, John Wagner, Larry Held
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Genetic and biological variability of calves placed into different retained ownership programs are examined. The genetic ability to grade choice is a critical factor influencing profitability of retaining calves to a slaughter weight. Weaning weight influences the type of retained ownership program for which a calf will be most profitable.
An Empirical Analysis Of The Efficiency Of Four Alternative Marketing Methods For Slaughter Cattle, Dillon Feuz, John Wagner, Scott Fausti
An Empirical Analysis Of The Efficiency Of Four Alternative Marketing Methods For Slaughter Cattle, Dillon Feuz, John Wagner, Scott Fausti
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Four alternative marketing methods for slaughter cattle were analyzed and empirically examined for pricing efficiency. Profits per head were found to be significantly different under the various marketing methods. Greater price discrimination occurred as carcass information increased. Increased price discrimination led to greater dispersion of profit from one marketing method to another. Different marketing methods appeared to send different production signals to producers. The desires of the consumer for less fat and a high quality product did not appear to be reaching the producers in the form of profit incentives under the most widely used marketing method.

National Agricultural Information Management System: Meeting Of Data Requirements Of Specialized Institutions., Ukpong G. E, Alegieuno J
Bullion
The paper examines the general deplorable situation with respect to accumulation of suitable statistical information in the country which has been of grave concern to agriculturalist, economists, business and institutions which need such information for their operations. Many specialized institutions, including the Central bank of Nigeria have, over the years, had their share of bad experience with inadequacy of data, especially with respect of monitoring the performance of the economy and evaluating the impact of policy measures adopted by the government. The main objective of this paper is to explore ways of minimizing identified problems, including the meeting of the …

Agricultural Protection In Developing Countries, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
The present paper explores why farmers are taxed in poor countries and subsidized in rich countries. Using the economic theory of contests to come to an understanding of the incentives for agricultural protectionism, we first sketch a framework for an excludable and rivalrous rent. We then apply this framework to agricultural protectionism in developing countries.

A method of combining survey data and Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) records to achieve low cost farm trials is presented. Farm trials and surveys of current practices and production responses are useful to identify yield gaps between expectations predicted from experimental findings and actual field results. Different management schemes can be ranked using subjective probabilities and stochastic dominance to enhance successful implementation of research findings and to increase the feedback between researchers, extension workers, and producers. A survey of current masitis control practices and expected milk yield response is the example. Combining survey results with DHIA records allowed estimating …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1991-92, Bruce B. Johnson
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports
Nebraska's agricultural land values moved slightly upward during 1991 as the market operated in a mode of relative stability. The 15th annual UNL farm real estate market survey recorded an overall state average increase of 3.7 percent for the 12-month period ending February 1, 1992. This rate of change matched the u.s. rate of inflation during 1991, so in real (purchasing power) terms, there was essentially no change in average value.
Most market observers saw no apparent change in volume of market activity during 1991 from the previous year. Estate settlement and retirement constitute the primary reasons for agricultural real …
