Management Of California Oak Woodlands: Uncertainties And Modeling, Jay E. Noel, Richard P. Thompson Jan 1997

Management Of California Oak Woodlands: Uncertainties And Modeling, Jay E. Noel, Richard P. Thompson

Agribusiness

A mathematical policy model of oak woodlands is presented. The model illustrates the policy uncertainties that exist in the management of oak woodlands. These uncertainties include: (1) selection of a policy criterion function, (2) woodland dynamics, (3) initial and final state of the woodland stock. The paper provides a review of each of the uncertainty issues. The final section of the paper describes a modeling approach that can be developed to assist policy makers in evaluating alternative oak woodland policy actions.

Study Of Livestock Production Levels In Three Communities Near The City Of Riobamba, Raul Rolando Nuñez Lopez Jan 1997

Study Of Livestock Production Levels In Three Communities Near The City Of Riobamba, Raul Rolando Nuñez Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

This study was done by administering household surveys to 50% of the families in the three communities. Families were selected through stratified random sampling. This allowed us to determine how much families are exploiting species that have a significant level of production as well as whether they use them for a commercial activity or subsistence. With regard to cows, 60.40 ± 4.72% of families use them. Each family has an average of 1.68 ± 0.21 cows. Productive cows make up 36.9% of the above percentage, which is a majority. The measured rate of production was 6.48 ± 0.25 L/cow/day. Overall, …

Thinking Styles And Financial Characteristics Of Selected Canadian Farm Managers, Wayne W. Howard, George L. Brinkman, Remy Lambert Dec 1996

Thinking Styles And Financial Characteristics Of Selected Canadian Farm Managers, Wayne W. Howard, George L. Brinkman, Remy Lambert

Agribusiness

The thinking styles of selected Canadian farm managers are identified using the life styles inventory (LSI). The farmers'LSI scores are compared with those of a base sample of nonfarmers, and correlations between the farmers'LSI scores and financial indicators are examined. Results indicate that farmers do thinking differently than nonfarmers and that there are significant correlations between thinking styles and financial measures.

Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin Dec 1996

Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Young (1995) estimated Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. He reported moderate growth rates for these four regions. This means that rapid growth of GDP in these four economies is due mainly to fast increase of inputs. Young (2000) also estimated the TFP growth rate of China to be 1.4% per year during the period of 1978 to 1998. Similar to his claim for the four 'Asian Tigers', he concluded that 'the productivity performance of the non-agricultural economy (of China) during the reform period is respectable, but not outstanding.' China's real GDP grew …

Potential For Cost-Share Policies To Improve Groundwater Quality Without Reducing Farm Profits, Thomas Dobbs, John Bischoff Dec 1996

Potential For Cost-Share Policies To Improve Groundwater Quality Without Reducing Farm Profits, Thomas Dobbs, John Bischoff

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act (FAIR) of reinforced the Federal government's commitment to environmental aspects of farm policy that received major attention in 1985 legislation and reinforcement in 1990. All three pieces of legislation placed emphasis on incentive and cost-share policies to reduce adverse soil and water effects of farming practices. A major initiative under FAIR is the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), for which $1.3 billion is authorized over 7 years to provide cost-share or incentive payment contracts with crop and livestock producers for environmental and conservation improvements (Young and Shields, 1996). In part, this program is …

Smallholder Dairying Under Transactions Costs In East Africa, Steven Staal, Christopher L. Delgado, Charles F. Nicholson Dec 1996

Smallholder Dairying Under Transactions Costs In East Africa, Steven Staal, Christopher L. Delgado, Charles F. Nicholson

Agribusiness

It is argued that dairying is vital to future viability of many small farms in East Africa and that high transactions costs for dairy production and marketing limit participation by asset-and information-poor smallholders. Case studies from Kenya and Ethiopia illustrate the role of dairy cooperatives in reducing transactions costs. Analysis of the determinants of producer prices received by a sample of dairy producers near Addis Ababa suggests that different levels of access to infrastructure, assets, and information explain why different households contemporaneously accept widely different producer prices for fluid milk.

Irrigation Management Practices In Nebraska, Ray Supalla, William Miller, Benedict Juliano Sep 1996

Irrigation Management Practices In Nebraska, Ray Supalla, William Miller, Benedict Juliano

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Farmers have adopted a variety of new irrigation practices and technologies in recent years. These practices generally have led to better yields per unit of applied water, reduced labor, improved profits, and have often produced positive environmental impacts. Environmental improvements result from irrigation practices which reduce runoff or deep percolation below the root zone, hence reducing surface and groundwater pollution from pesticides and fertilizer.

Recently, a mail survey was sent to 5,000 irrigators in Nebraska, resulting in 898 useable returns. This survey provided information on how irrigators decided when to irrigate and how they determined the amount of water applied. …

The Change From Red To White Meat: The Role Of Technology, Lilyan E. Fulginiti Jul 1996

The Change From Red To White Meat: The Role Of Technology, Lilyan E. Fulginiti

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Since 1950, the composition of the U.S. meat diet has shifted markedly from red meats to poultry. For example, from 1970 to 1984, on a percapita basis, beef consumption has declined by 6.4 percent, while chicken and turkey consumptions have increased by 37.9, and 42.5 percent respectively (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1985). The numerous studies of this phenomenon from the demand side (Chavas, 1983; Braschler, 1983; Nyankori and Miller, 1982; Moschini and Meilke, 1984; Wohlgenant, 1985, Thurman, 1987; Chalfant and Alston, 1988) have failed to achieve a consensus as to whether a change in taste contributed to this shift. One …

Ecological Balance On Individual Crop-Livestock Farms: An Idealistic Notion Or Also Practically Feasible?, Donald Taylor, Diane Rickerl

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The following research question is examined in this article: Can one or more of eight case study integrated crop and cow-calf farms/ranches in South Dakota be simultaneously "balanced" from the standpoints of (1) amounts of manure produced "matching" (plus or minus 10%) the soil fertility needs of producers' cropland and rangeland and (2) amounts of feed-grains and roughages produced "matching" (plus or minus 10%) the nutrient needs of producers' livestock? The livestock manure production-utilization component of the study involves estimation and comparison of amounts of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) (1) available to crops and grass in the manure produced …

Massively Parallel Computation Of Large-Scale Spatial Price Equilibrium Models With Discriminatory Ad Valorem Tariffs, Anna Nagurney, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip M. Bishop Jun 1996

Massively Parallel Computation Of Large-Scale Spatial Price Equilibrium Models With Discriminatory Ad Valorem Tariffs, Anna Nagurney, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip M. Bishop

Agribusiness

In this paper, we develop a perfectly competitive spatial equilibrium model in price and quantity variables in the presence of discriminatory ad valorem tariffs, a widely used trade policy instrument. We derive the equilibrium conditions and formulate them as a variational inequality problem. An algorithm is then proposed for the computation of the equilibrium pattern and convergence results established. The algorithm resolves the problem into very simple subproblems, each of which can be solved simultaneously and in closed form. Finally, the algorithm is implemented on the massively parallel Thinking Machines CM-2 and CM-5 architectures, known as the Connection Machines, and …

Feedlot Manure Nutrient Loadings On South Dakota Farmland, Donald Taylor, Diane Rickerl Jun 1996

Feedlot Manure Nutrient Loadings On South Dakota Farmland, Donald Taylor, Diane Rickerl

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

A key determinant of whether livestock manure is an asset or liability in agricultural production and to society more generally is the amount of manure produced relative to the nearby farmland area to which the manure can be economically transported for application. The objectives of the study reported in this article are to (1) estimate levels of manure nutrient (nitrogen = N and phosphorus = P) loadings on the cropland and rangeland associated with 78 feedlot farm operations in South Dakota and (2) determine factors, including size-of-feedlot and cropland hectarages, associated with cropland N and P loadings for the feedlots …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1995-96, Bruce B. Johnson, Bart Miller

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Nebraska's agricultural land values generally moved upward during the year ending February 1, 1996; although variation was rather pronounced. For the state as a whole, the increase averaged 4.5 percent and represented the ninth straight year of value increases.

Cropland values were higher throughout the state as crop commodity prices pushed to 20-year highs by the end of 1995. Dryland cropland values generally rose 5 to 6 percent, with gains of 9 percent recorded in the East District of the state. Gravity irrigated land rose an average of 5 percent while center pivot irrigated land values rose over 7 percent …
