Testing For Input And Output Separability In Nebraska Agriculture Sector, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers Oct 1998

Testing For Input And Output Separability In Nebraska Agriculture Sector, Saleem Shaik, Glenn A. Helmers

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

Traditionally the role of separability in system of demand functions has been the subject of numerous analyses, with few directed toward systems of supply functions. Separability an important property of production, confirms the existence of aggregation in variables and the decentralization of decision making. Separability implies that marginal rates of substitution between pair of inputs (outputs) in the separated group are independent of the levels of inputs (outputs) outside the group.

Weak separability in the estimation of a systems of demand functions was first explored by Sono(196 1) and Leontief(1947) to deal with aggregation problems in consumer and producer theory …

Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele Sep 1998

Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Arkansas is fortunate to have outstanding water resources, especially in terms of water quality. However, this is not to say that there are no problems. The Arkansas Water Resources Center (AWRC) in cooperation with other state and federal agencies is characterizing our water resources and providing data important to the wise use of these resources. One wise use of our water resources is to mitigate the impact of non-point sources of pollution on water quality through the use of best management practices. These proceedings address not only the characterization of the quality of ground and surface water but also address …

Effect Of Risk Perception On Willingness To Pay For Improved Water Quality, Renu Sukharomana, Ray Supalla Aug 1998

Effect Of Risk Perception On Willingness To Pay For Improved Water Quality, Renu Sukharomana, Ray Supalla

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

Groundwater quality improvement benefits for Nebraska were estimated using both contingent valuation (CV) and averting expenditures (AE) methods. Willingness to pay (WTP) and averting expenditures were measured based on a mail survey of 4,000 randomly selected Nebraska households that was conducted in mid October 1997. A double-bounded referendum format was used to elicit WTP for water quality improvements. The questionnaire also solicited information on the socioeconomic factors hypothesized to influence WTP and averting expenditures, including: risk perceptions, age, level of education, income, length of stay in Nebraska, source of water supply, opinions regarding who should pay for water quality programs, …

The Role Of Soil Test Information In Reducing Groundwater Pollution, Ronald A. Fleming, Richard M. Adams, David E. Ervin Jul 1998

The Role Of Soil Test Information In Reducing Groundwater Pollution, Ronald A. Fleming, Richard M. Adams, David E. Ervin

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Testing soils for nutrients is expected to improve groundwater quality. However, it is unknown whether soil testing will improve groundwater quality sufficiently to decrease the demand for direct regulation of agricultural practices. Focusing on an irrigated agricultural region in eastern Oregon, the economic and environmental aspects of soil testing are assessed using a spatially distributed, dynamic simulation model which links economic behavior with the physical processes that determine groundwater quality. Results indicate that soil testing of all fields increases farm profits and reduces groundwater nitrate concentration. However, the benefits are small in terms of potential improvements in groundwater quality.

Improving Water Properties To Increase Infiltration Characteristics, Richard W. O. Soppe, Stuart W. Styles Jun 1998

Improving Water Properties To Increase Infiltration Characteristics, Richard W. O. Soppe, Stuart W. Styles

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Water properties, such as the viscosity and surface tension, can be affected by temperature and surfactants to Increase infiltration rates into soils. Specifically, they will change the hydraulic conductivity of the soil. A simple soap solution and the new material PAM (inexpensive polymer chemical) were evaluated as surfactants. Laboratory experiments and field tests on a site in Davis, California were done to quantify the effects of changing the water properties. Additional effects, like the improved soil structure during infiltration and less soil particles in tailwater (reduced erosion due to runoff) were observed and are described in this paper. The conclusions …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1997-98, Bruce B. Johnson Jun 1998

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1997-98, Bruce B. Johnson

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Nebraska's 47 million acres of agricultural real estate is currently valued at nearly $35 billion, averaging more than $700 per acre. Only four other states have a higher-valued farm real estate base.

The value of agricultural land in Nebraska rose an average of 8.6 percent during the year ending February 1, 1998. Based upon the annual UNL Farm Real Estate Market Survey series, this represented the 11th consecutive year of value increases for the state's all-land average.

The three districts which comprise the eastern third of the state experienced the largest percentage gains in all land values, approaching 10 percent …

Domestic Bargaining In Taiwan's International Agricultural Negotiations, Chien-Pin Li Jun 1998

Domestic Bargaining In Taiwan's International Agricultural Negotiations, Chien-Pin Li

Faculty Articles

Development literature often depicts development as a transitional process in which agriculture is marginalized while resources are transferred to growing nonfarm sectors, through either voluntary exchange or involuntary coercion. The conventional analysis of Taiwan's agriculture and its role in economic development generally attests to this model.-1 Prior to the 1970s, as the backbone of Taiwan's economy and the major earner of foreign currencies, agriculture accounted for more than 40% of the total employment and over 20% of the net domestic product (NDP). But a series of programs unfavorable to farmers were put in place so that the government could channel …

Comparison Of Organic And Conventional Crop Prices: 1995 To 1997, Thomas L. Dobbs, Lisa M. Carr Apr 1998

Comparison Of Organic And Conventional Crop Prices: 1995 To 1997, Thomas L. Dobbs, Lisa M. Carr

Economics Pamphlet Series (1985-2016)

Organic industry sales by United State (US) natural product distributors have been growing at more than 20 percent annually during the 1990s. Demand growth for certified organic agricultural commodities has been strong both in the us and abroad. For example, Japan's demand for organically grown us soybeans has been especially strong in recent years. This growth in demand, together with growing concerns about the profitability and ecological sustainability of more "conventional" farming systems in some areas, is causing new interest in organic agriculture. Therefore, as part of our sustainable agriculture research program in the Economics Department at South Dakota State …

Off-Farm Work By Census-Farm Operators: An Overview Of Structure And Mobility Patterns, Michael Swidinsky, Wayne H. Howard, Alfons Weersink

Agribusiness

The purpose of this paper is to provide descriptive statistics on off-farm labour supply and farm/off-farm labour reallocation for Canadian farmers using cross-sectional data and cross-sectional panel data, respectively, obtained from the Canadian Census of Agriculture. This report is part of a larger study on the off-farm labour supply and labour mobility of farm operators (Swidinsky, 1997). The data indicates that a growing proportion of operators worked off-farm between 1971 and 1991. As well, operators who work off-farm have allocated greater amounts of time to the off-farm labour market. The share of census-farm operators reporting 97-228 days of off-farm work …

Cropland Diversion Programs And Rural Nonfarm Population Change, Evert Van Der Sluis, Willis Peterson

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Data from 100 farming-dependent counties in the U.S. are used to measure the impact of acreage reduction programs on the level of the rural nonfarm population. Results of a simultaneous equation model suggest that the programs had a negative influence on the number of rural nonfarm people, reducing the rural nonfarm population in these counties by an estimated 15 to 22 percent over the 1960-90 period.

Agricultural Productivity In Developing Countries, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin Feb 1998

Agricultural Productivity In Developing Countries, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This paper examines changes in agricultural productivity in 18 developing countries over the period 1961-1985. We use a nonparametric, output-based Malmquist index and a parametric variable coeficients Cobb-Douglas production function to examine, whether our estimates confirm results from other studies that have indicated declining agricultural productivity in LDCs. The results confirm previous findings, indicating that at least half of these countries have experienced productivity declines in agriculture.

Factors Influencing Cash Marketing Decisions For Fed Cattle, Scott Fausti, Steve Schamber, Dwight Adamson

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The reason for the failure of individual carcass-based pricing systems to supplant average-price-based pricing systems in the cash market for fed cattle remains unresolved. Competing hypotheses in the literature associated with this issue are empirically tested using survey data collected on the marketing behavior of cattle producers.

The Coming Age Of Scarcity : Preventing Mass Death And Genocide In The Twenty-First Century, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann

Books

The structure of the book is simple. The first part analyzes major forces having an impact on the survivability of civilization as we know it into the twenty-first century. It outlines the challenges we face, including overpopulation, pressure upon the land, migration, ecological damage, and social instability. In part two, we present more detailed discussion of the problem of scarcity and how it relates to conflict. The authors in this section argue that the current level of human activity is unsustainable. They demonstrate that population growth in particular affects the natural world and can affect the social order and international …

Externalities From Roaming Livestock: Explaining The Demise Of The Open Range, Terence J. Centner, Ronald C. Griffin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Fence-in laws in most states require ranchers to pay for fences to keep their livestock from trespassing onto others' property. Some states, or jurisdictions within states, have a fence-out rule that requires ranchers' neighbors to pay for fences to keep livestock out. Both rules are Pareto optimal. Using a potential Pareto criterion, we show that a preference for fence-out in some areas may end as conditions change, such as increased nonranching land uses. Changed conditions may have legal consequences. Specific fence-out and fence cost-sharing provisions may be potentially Pareto inefficient and may be challenged for being unconstitutional under the due …

Statistical Boundaries: A Means By Which The Realities Of Rural Decline In The Western Australian Wheatbelt Has Been Hidden, Fiona M. Haslam-Mckenzie

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper will focus on a recent demographic study of the statistical subdivisions between Geraldton and Esperance and an ethnographic survey in that region, undertaken to understand the changes occurring in rural- communities. The paper will then examine the links between continuing depopulation trends and diminishing infrastructure, focusing on how these demographic changes impact on the daily lives of the Western Australian agricultural population, particularly women, and what effect these changes and government policy are having on the delivery of essential services.

The overall population of the region from Geraldton south to Esperance in Western Australia, excluding the metropolitan area, …

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1997, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

In 1997, Nigeria experienced its third consecutive year of macroeconomic stability, resulting in modest improvement in domestic output growth and a persistently low inflation rate. The balance of payments position showed a modest surplus, and significant success was achieved in reducing domestic liquidity growth. Domestic output expanded further due to increased agricultural output and crude petroleum production, while the inflation rate declined further. Domestic output, measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increased by 3.8% in 1997, as against the average growth rate of 2.3% in the preceding three years. The fight against inflation was highly successful, reaching a single …
