Farmworkers In The Desert: An Anthropological Study Of A Village In Reclaimed Desert Land In Egypt, Kazuaki Takemura
Farmworkers In The Desert: An Anthropological Study Of A Village In Reclaimed Desert Land In Egypt, Kazuaki Takemura
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This is an anthropological study of farmworkers living in reclaimed desert land in Egypt. Since the start in the early-1950s, desert land reclamation has been a governmental enterprise to increase cultivable land in order to keep pace with the rapid population growth. From the mid-1970s, reclaimed desert areas started to be distributed to various groups of people. "Peasants, "university graduates", "public company employees", and recently "evicted tenants" received small plots of land from the government, and became small-scale farmers. The government has considered them as the main components of such "new land" projects. Likewise, development programs and research institutions in …

Three Potentially Effective Approaches To Community Change, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel
Cornhusker Economics
Communities change all the time .... businesses come and go, streets and other infrastructure are improved and schools grow or constrict depending upon their enrollment. Even with the wide range of changes in our communities, research shows that there are really only three commonly used approaches to implement change. They include the: 1) self-help; 2) technical assistance; and 3) conflict approach.
Price Transparency In The Voluntary Price Reporting System For Live Cattle: Theory And Empirical Evidence From South Dakota, Scott Fausti, Matthew Diersen
Price Transparency In The Voluntary Price Reporting System For Live Cattle: Theory And Empirical Evidence From South Dakota, Scott Fausti, Matthew Diersen
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The ability of the former federal voluntary price reporting system to facilitate market efficiency in the cash markets for U.S. livestock was questioned by producer groups and academic researchers prior to implementation of federal mandatory price reporting regulations. In the cash market for slaughter cattle, concerns raised in the literature centered on the effect of thinning cash markets and strategic price reporting behavior on the robustness of voluntary cash price reports issued by the USDA-Agricultural Marketing Services. A theoretical framework is developed describing the interregional spatial linkages between cash markets and price reporting regimes (mandatory versus voluntary). Data from South …

National economic conditions will continue to favor growth over the next three years. Increased business investment will combine with rising industrial production, expanding exports, and moderate increases in consumer spending to grow the economy. The rate of inflation is expected to increase as well. The rate of real (inflation-adjusted) growth will moderate compared to strong economic growth during 2004. Real gross domestic product will grow 3 percent to 3.5 percent over the next three years. High oil prices will remain a drain on the economy, siphoning spending from domestically produced goods and services. Fuel prices are expected to remain at …
Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken
Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken
Cornhusker Economics
One of the most misunderstood concepts in zoning law is that of non-conforming uses, or “grandfathering.” Most zoning regulations exempt existing uses that would not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. These uses (land uses or buildings) are called non-conforming uses because they do not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. The often mistaken belief is that zoning regulations must leave non-conforming uses alone. This is incorrect: Neb.Rev.Stat. § 23-173.01 allows non-conforming uses to be terminated, continued or regulated by a county zoning regulation. As a practical matter, however, most counties will not regulate or terminate …

The Comparative Advantages Of Family-Owned Businesses, Jeffrey S. Royer
Cornhusker Economics
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 97 percent of the farms in the United States are family farms (Banker and MacDonald). In addition, many agricultural input suppliers, marketing and processing firms, and other agricultural businesses are family-owned or controlled. Among the food processing and wholesaling companies that are family-owned or controlled are Archer Daniels Midland, Campbell Soup, Pilgrim’s Pride, Smithfield Foods, J. M. Smucker, and Tyson Foods (Boland). More generally, over 35 percent of the firms included in the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index are family-held firms (Anderson and Reeb).

Hog Markets, Al Prosch
Cornhusker Economics
If the lean hog carcass futures prices are any indicator, producers should have four or five months of very good prices. Feed costs are down from this period a year ago and futures prices through September are very good. If actual prices are at or near futures expectations, profits will be good. Beyond September the profit picture changes quickly.

Farm Program Spending Under The President’S 2006 Budget Proposal, Roger Selley, Bruce B. Johnson
Cornhusker Economics
According to Secretary of Agriculture Johanns news release on February 7, 2005, the President’s 2006 budget proposes a net reduction in farm support program spending nationally of about $587 million in 2006, and $5.7 billion from 2006 through 2015. These proposals include: reducing the payment limitation for all commodity payments, making marketing assistance loans based on historical production and reducing all commodity payments to farmers by 5 percent. It is difficult to estimate the impact of any changes in the payment limitation. Nearly all producers have their business arrangements configured to avoid the current payment limitations, and their ability to …

Target Markets For Grain And Cotton Marketing Consultants And Market Information Systems, Oscar Vergara, Keith H. Coble, Darren Hudson, George F. Patrick, Thomas O. Knight, Alan Baquet
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
This paper examines the use of market consultants and market information systems by grain and cotton producers. A model of producer demand for marketing information and consultants is proposed that decomposes price received into exogenous and endogenous components. The analysis is based on a survey of over 1,600 producers. The results suggest that expenditures on market information systems and market consultants are not independent and, more specifically, expenditures on marketing consultants substitute for expenditures on market information systems.

Forward Pricing Behavior Of Corn And Soybean Producers, Todd Davis, George Patrick, Keith Coble, Thomas Knight, Alan Baquet
Forward Pricing Behavior Of Corn And Soybean Producers, Todd Davis, George Patrick, Keith Coble, Thomas Knight, Alan Baquet
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Forward pricing behavior of random samples of Indiana, Nebraska, and Mississippi crop producers was analyzed using Heckman's two-step limited information maximum likelihood estimation procedure. Producers who forward priced during the 1995-1998 period generally expected to forward price in 1999 using similar techniques. Probit models were estimated for cash forward contracts and taking a direct position in futures or options separately and combined. Results provide limited support for the hypothesis that forward pricing should be analyzed as an adoption decision. Variables reflecting risk attitudes do affect the decision to use forward pricing, while variables related to economic position affect the level …
College Student Views On Farming & Ranching Careers, Darrell R. Mark
College Student Views On Farming & Ranching Careers, Darrell R. Mark
Cornhusker Economics
Given the average age of the principal farm operator in Nebraska has increased from 48.5 years in 1982 to 53.9 years in 2002, it would appear that fewer young people have the opportunity or desire to pursue careers in production agriculture. Many agricultural producers and inhabitants of rural communities recognize this trend and often ponder whether it is lack of interest, lack of opportunity or both that cause youth to pursue other careers. Certainly, the highly competitive, capital intensive, lowmargin business that production agriculture has become could be expected to deter many college students from a career in farming or …

Nebraska Farmland Values Continue On Upward Climb, Bruce B. Johnson, Aaron Raymond
Cornhusker Economics
Following a remarkable income year for most of Nebraska agriculture, it probably comes as no great surprise that agricultural land values rose sharply. Preliminary estimates for the year ending February 1, 2005 show the value of Nebraska farmland rising an average of 10.9 percent. This was the largest annual percentage increase of the past 16 years. The increase itself represents a value of more than $4.4 billion, and pushed the total estimated value of Nebraska’s agricultural real estate to nearly $45 billion.

Trade flows of cattle and beef had been increasing over the last 20 years, that is until BSE was discovered in Canada and subsequently in the U.S. in 2003. How did the increased trade of cattle and beef products impact the beef industry, the cattle industry and/or the cow-calf producer? The goal of this short article is to look at annual trade flows from 1998-2002 to provide answers to the above questions. The year 2002 was the last full year when trade flows were not significantly impacted by the discovery of BSE in North America.

On January 21, 2005 the Nebraska Supreme Court handed down its decision in Spear T Ranch v Knaub, deciding for the first time how conflicts between surface water irrigators and ground water irrigators will be resolved. The case is one of the most important Nebraska Supreme Court decisions in a generation, and will have significant legal impacts for years. This article, which appeared in the March 2005 Nebraska Farmer magazine, provides a brief overview of the Spear T Ranch decision.

All children hope that they will someday make more money than their parents; just as parents hope their children will live more fulfilling lives than they did. These goals imply economic growth for the society as a whole. If the country expands its economic pie, there is more to go around for everyone. But economic growth could lead to excessive use of natural resources and other environmental amenities. If this is the case, there may be conflicts between growth and environmental protection, both of which are important social objectives. Exactly what is the relationship between economic growth and the use …

Beef Demand Increased In 2004, Dillon Feuz
Cornhusker Economics
Beef demand increased about 8-10 percent in 2004. What does that really tell us and how is beef demand measured? For cattle producers, how does an increase in beef demand impact the price for fed cattle, feeder cattle and calves? The objective of this article is to answer those questions.
Ethanol In Nebraska, Richard K. Perrin
Ethanol In Nebraska, Richard K. Perrin
Cornhusker Economics
Ethanol production in the U.S. has mushroomed at the rate of nearly 20 percent per year in this young century. In Nebraska, ethanol production increased from about 500 million gallons in 1999 to over 700 million gallons in 2004. Furthermore, recent Nebraska plant construction suggests that it can be expected to increase by at least another 40 percent within the next year or two.
