Journal of Refugee & Global Health
Background: According to the US Census Bureau International Report, in 2015, almost nine percent of the world’s population was aged 65 and over. As the worldwide population ages, there is a need to understand how to best care for those individuals. Developing clinical research programs focusing on long term care (LTC) will be critical to defining best practice.
Objectives: The objectives of this manuscript are to: 1) outline the challenges identified in performing clinical research in long term care facilities (LTCF), and 2) offer solutions for future clinical research in the LTC environment based upon our experiences.
Methods: A research …

Failing, But Not Failures: Assessing The Use Of Positive Communication To Accompany Didactic Learning For Remediation Of Probationary College Students, Heather Annette Lemon
Failing, But Not Failures: Assessing The Use Of Positive Communication To Accompany Didactic Learning For Remediation Of Probationary College Students, Heather Annette Lemon
Student Theses and Dissertations
College and universities struggle to maintain a balance between providing academically rigorous programs and facilitating high levels of student retention and timely graduation. Academic completion is a performance measure for universities and a large component of assessment is the percentage of students that perform successfully within their degree programs. Not only are these measures crucial to establishing and maintaining a university’s reputation and ranking, state funded institutions are evaluated against these measures to determine the financial support they will receive. This study examines the role that positive communication has with four variables crucial to academic rehabilitation: Self-Esteem, Perceived Support, Knowledge …

Serving The Less-Commonly-Trained Teacher: Perspectives From Arabic Instructors, Dustin De Felice, Amanda Lanier, Paula Winke
The Qualitative Report
As proficient speakers of less-commonly-taught languages seek to meet the demand for qualified instructors, they face a range of personal and professional challenges. In an effort to understand the perspectives of these instructors and their particular educational experiences and needs, we conducted a phenomenological case study of two aspiring Arabic teachers. Specifically, we sought insights into their lived experiences, their motivations for pursuing a graduate degree, their attempts to connect coursework with pedagogical practices, and their needs in terms of professional development. Our findings illuminate the intersecting objectives these instructors must achieve. They need to position themselves as qualified candidates …
Sustaining Learning About Qualitative Inquiry: A Book Review On The Craft Of Qualitative Research - A Handbook, Umair Majid
Sustaining Learning About Qualitative Inquiry: A Book Review On The Craft Of Qualitative Research - A Handbook, Umair Majid
The Qualitative Report
There are only a handful of articles, books, tools, and resources that are truly accessible to the novice qualitative investigator. The literature contains reams of resources that aid researchers to launch the qualitative learning process. However, there are few opportunities to develop the depth, prowess, and creativity needed to sustain lifelong learning. The Craft of Qualitative Research: A Handbook by Kleinknecht, van den Scott, and Sanders is one resource that assists researchers to achieve this objective. Conceptualized as a “handbook,” this book is meant to be used throughout research projects and professional careers. The practice of qualitative inquiry serves as …
Conflict Between Religious Beliefs And Sexuality: An Autoethnography, Carlos E. Gerena
Conflict Between Religious Beliefs And Sexuality: An Autoethnography, Carlos E. Gerena
The Qualitative Report
Despite the shift in attitudes in religious institutions toward homosexuals in the United States, there are some religions that continue to view same-sex behavior as a deviant and damning sin. For many, religious beliefs and values provide meaning and impact personal identity. Using autoethnography, I will explicate my own experiences with religious institutions and the ongoing conflict between religious beliefs and sexuality. I will discuss messages received from the Pentecostal church, family, and Latino community, and how these messages influenced my human development and emotional well-being. I show that internalization of the principles taught by the Pentecostal Church triggered a …

From C++ To Conscientiousness: Modeling The Psychosocial Characteristics Influencing Cybersecurity Personnel Performance, Rachel C. Dreibelbis
From C++ To Conscientiousness: Modeling The Psychosocial Characteristics Influencing Cybersecurity Personnel Performance, Rachel C. Dreibelbis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study drew upon several theoretical frameworks of cybersecurity performance to evaluate distal and proximal individual attributes that may predict cyber performance in a variety of cybersecurity work roles. The proposed models in this study predicted that cognitive ability, personality (conscientiousness and openness to experience), and motivational factors like learning orientation would work through proximal attributes like technical knowledge, communication, and problem solving to influence performance. Hypotheses were tested using 139 employee responses to predictor variables and performance ratings from their supervisors across two industries and several cybersecurity work roles. Correlational analyses and path models supported that several individual …

Deaf Patients And Children: An Innovative Organization By And For Deaf Parents, Howard G. Mann, Solange Sevigny-Skyer
JADARA
Parents and Children (PAC) is both a support group and organization. This is an organization that provides support to families in which one or both spouses are hearing impaired. These families also include children who are either deaf or hearing. What began in Rochester, New York, as an informal parent group early in 1985 evolved to the present formal PAC organization three years after its inception. This paper attempts to describe how PAC started, to explain the goals and purposes of PAC, to outline the types of programs offered and, finally, to point out why such a support group should …

Providing Deaf People With The Opportunity For A Degree: Benefits To Individual And Society, William A. Welsh, Gerard G. Walter, Dorthea Riley
JADARA
This study was conducted to determine the extent to which individual and societal financial sacrifices necessary to support postsecondary education for deaf people are worthwhile by determining the relationship of college to both higher salaries for deaf individuals and additional taxes paid to the government.
The Internal Revenue Service provided data on earnings of, and taxes paid by, several groups of college applicants: those not accepted; no- shows; withdrawals; sub-bachelor graduates; and bachelor degree recipients. Projections of their earnings received and taxes paid over 20 years were made.
Principal findings were that, after20 years: (1) deaf Bachelor degree recipients will …
A Statutory Remedy For Negligent Hiring In Deafness Rehabilitation, William P. Mccrone, Bruce A. Payette
A Statutory Remedy For Negligent Hiring In Deafness Rehabilitation, William P. Mccrone, Bruce A. Payette
JADARA
Given the modest gains in hiring well qualified deafness rehabilitation personnel in Vocational Rehabilitation, is it time to recognize that negligent hiring in deafness rehabilitation is a subtle form of discrimination against deaf and multiply handicapped deaf VR applicants? Amendments to the Rehabilitation Act are recommended to remedy the negligent hiring practices of some VR Rehabilitation of Deaf Clients (Schein, 1980) agencies that further disable deaf clients by hiring rehabilitation personnel who lack the skills to work effectively with deaf and multiply handicapped people.
