Two Essays On And With DōGen, Conor J. Loy, Owen Crum Sep 2019

Two Essays On And With DōGen, Conor J. Loy, Owen Crum

Denison Journal of Religion

Zen Master Dōgen (1200-1253) is one of the most important Japanese Buddhist philosophers in medieval Japan. The first essay is a short introduction to Dōgen and the significance of his teachings in the 21st century. Reading Dōgen’s “Mountains and Rivers Sūtra,” Owen Crum and Conor Loy emphasize the importance of recognizing Buddha-nature in every living being as a way to overcome environmental destruction. Both authors understand that Dōgen’s teachings of universal Buddha-nature challenge anthropocentric views on nature and allow people in the twenty-first century to ask pressing ethical and religious questions in new and compelling ways.

Keeping Up With Hanuman: Reimagining The Myth Of Hanuman Through Animation, Mrinalini Mitra Sep 2019

Keeping Up With Hanuman: Reimagining The Myth Of Hanuman Through Animation, Mrinalini Mitra

Denison Journal of Religion

Hanuman (2005) distinguished itself from the previous films by mimicking and adopting an animation style that was adopted in Western superhero movies and cartoons. The favorable response of the Indian community and diaspora to the movie Hanuman coupled with the fact that Hanuman had previously been adapted in basic arcade and online games as the main hero, inspired the Indian digital gaming industry. This essay analyzes the popularity of the ‘animated’ Hanuman and the Indian audiences eagerness to ingest Hanuman’s stories through animation. What makes Hanuman appealing to new media genres, like animation, in the Indian sub-continent? How do the …

Jim Crow Jesus, Sky Paxton Sep 2019

Jim Crow Jesus, Sky Paxton

Denison Journal of Religion

With an attention to womanist theological critiques of hetero-patriarchal-white- sexist America especially from Kelly Brown Douglas, this essay deconstructs the images of the white Christ and reconstructs the Black Christ. The Black Christ was born out of Blacks’ critical awareness of white exceptionalism, experiences of historical racism, and gender and sexuality-sensitive approach to Christian theology. Finally, Paxton suggests a Black female gay as the radical embodiment of the Christ in the 21st century America.

The Economics Of The Guru, Margaret Mahoney Sep 2019

The Economics Of The Guru, Margaret Mahoney

Denison Journal of Religion

This essay studies “Gurus,” specifically the globalization of Hinduism that has spread Hindu spiritual practices in the West and also influenced the practices in In- dia. In the United States, a focus on the self and individualism is a trait commonly found which has led to an increase in mindfulness practices. These practices travel around the world and are changed in the process, then come back to the “East” as comodified practices. Many modern gurus have latched onto traditionally Hindu practices and teachings and sell their own version of it in lectures and products that promise its consumers a better …

Gaston’S Economic, Religious And Political Intersectionality, Jack Droke Sep 2019

Gaston’S Economic, Religious And Political Intersectionality, Jack Droke

Denison Journal of Religion

Gaston county, North Carolina provides a perfect case to explore the intersectionality of the economy, politics, and religion that dominates power structures on a national scale. With an attention to the Loray Mill strike of 1929, this paper theologically analyzes the relationship between neoliberal economy and the prosperity gospel and questions whether the church is a setting of concessions when it should be acting as a voice for its constituents, regardless of what the upper class desires or has constructed.

What "Makes" A Religion?: Interactions Of Orthodoxy And Orthopraxy In Hinduism, Eva Rosenthal Sep 2019

What "Makes" A Religion?: Interactions Of Orthodoxy And Orthopraxy In Hinduism, Eva Rosenthal

Denison Journal of Religion

This paper explores the complexities of the following question: In being Hindu, in what ways does one "practice" and in what ways does one "believe?" To what extent are ancient texts considered an un-debatable "source" for faith in divine presence? Gaining an understanding of what these texts are and how exactly they relate to both ritual and belief (because, as we will come to find, both ritual and belief are present in every facet of Hindu worship; what we are looking at is their interaction with one another and which seems to be of more importance in each given circumstance) …

A Necropolitical Analysis Of American Military Recruitment, Sarah Curtin Sep 2019

A Necropolitical Analysis Of American Military Recruitment, Sarah Curtin

Denison Journal of Religion

In light of postcolonial theorist Achille Mbembe’s idea of necropolitics or sovereignty’s right to kill, Curtin historically and ethically analyzes American military recruitment from a draft to an all-volunteer-force. Defining soldiering as a form of necropolitical labor because soldiers, especially low-ranked soldiers, jeopardize their own lives while carrying out their jobs at war, the author ethically suggests that (1) war must be understood as a path to death, (2) the U.S. should slowly downsize its military, and (3) religion such as Christianity must accentuate life over death.

Effective Communication: A Vital Skill In Healthcare, Allison Crabtree Sep 2019

Effective Communication: A Vital Skill In Healthcare, Allison Crabtree

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

Members of the healthcare team conduct thousands of patient and peer interactions over the course of a career. The call to action from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on Health Professions and Training stresses the importance of communication training for all members of the healthcare team. As with other healthcare procedures, communication skills can be learned and improved upon, but requires commitment and practice.

Given the wealth of evidence linking ineffective clinician-patient communication with increased malpractice risks, patient nonadherence, patient and clinician dissatisfaction, and poor patient health outcomes, the necessity of addressing communication skills deficits is of utmost importance

Discrepant Responding Across Measures Of College Students’ Sexual Victimization Experiences: Conceptual Replication And Extension, Raeann E. Anderson, Douglas D. Delahanty Sep 2019

Discrepant Responding Across Measures Of College Students’ Sexual Victimization Experiences: Conceptual Replication And Extension, Raeann E. Anderson, Douglas D. Delahanty

Psychology Faculty Publications

Sexual violence victimization affects approximately 1 in 5 college women and 1 in 6 college men; however, rates of sexual victimization vary widely, in part due to measurement issues. The present study is the first to compare the Sexual Experience Survey-Short Form Victimization to a measure of sexual victimization designed to capture gender differences, the Post-Refusal Sexual Persistence Scale-Victimization (PRSPS-V). Prior research has compared the perpetration versions of these questionnaires and found large discrepancies. College students (N = 673: 367 women, 298 men, 8 gender minority) were surveyed. The SES-SFV identified 260 cases of sexual victimization whereas the PRSPS-V identified …

Positive Youth Religious And Spiritual Development: What We Have Learned From Religious Families, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks Sep 2019

Positive Youth Religious And Spiritual Development: What We Have Learned From Religious Families, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks

Faculty Publications

In this article, we highlight the contributions of the findings from a branch of the American Families of Faith national research project that pertain to positive religious and spiritual development in youth. We present detailed findings from six previous studies on religious youth and their parents from diverse faith communities (various denominations in Christianity, three major branches of Judaism, and two major groups in Islam). We discuss what our findings suggest for positive religious/spiritual development, particularly in a family context. Finally, we suggest several ways to strengthen the literature on development in youth by exploring positive religious/spiritual development in relation …

The Difference Between Maximum Profit And Maximum Production, Matthew Stockton Sep 2019

The Difference Between Maximum Profit And Maximum Production, Matthew Stockton

Cornhusker Economics

Nitrogen fertilizer (N) is commonly used as a production input to increase crop yields. It is included as one of the six Testing Ag Performance Solutions (UNL TAPS) program decision choices and contributes much to productivity as well as costs. Its use however is not without controversy. The over-application of N gets into the groundwater and nearby waterways becoming a pollutant. Excessive use does little or nothing to increase revenue but can inflate costs, thereby reducing profit. For these reasons and others, using the right amount of N has become a popular and important topic among those that use and/or …

Probabilistic Modeling Of Democracy, Corruption, Hemophilia A And Prediabetes Data, A. K. M. Raquibul Bashar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parametric analysis of any real-world data is the most powerful tool to characterize the probabilistic behavior in social, economic, medical, epidemiological, and other areas of study. In the present study, we identify the theoretical Probability Distribution Function(PDF) for Democracy Index Scores (DIS) from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) database and estimate the maximum likelihood estimates of the theoretical PDFS. We also identify the individual PDFs for each of the clusters, Full Democracy, Flawed Democracy, Hybrid Regime, and Authoritarian Regime defined by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

A statistical model is a convenient instrument to predict the future value of any …

Introductory Notes On Engaging With Communities For Justice, Kem Gambrell, Lazarina Topuzova Sep 2019

Introductory Notes On Engaging With Communities For Justice, Kem Gambrell, Lazarina Topuzova

Journal of Hate Studies

Since the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, the rise in hate around the country has increased dramatically. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), in the days immediately following the election of President Trump, a wave of hate crimes and lesser hate incidents swept the country- 1,094 bias incidents in the first 34 days (Potok, 2017). More than a third of these incidents directly referenced Trump, his “Make America Great Again” slogan, or his infamous misogynistic, racist, xenophobic or other demeaning remarks.

Void And Idol: A Critical Theory Analysis Of The Neo-Fascist "Alt-Right", Joan Braune Sep 2019

Void And Idol: A Critical Theory Analysis Of The Neo-Fascist "Alt-Right", Joan Braune

Journal of Hate Studies

This article’s critique of the neo-fascist “alt-right” employs philosophical methods located at a point of intersection between humanist Marxist and spiritual existentialist frameworks, by relying on two radical twentieth-century philosophers of Jewish descent: Erich Fromm (1900-1980) and Simone Weil (1909-1943). What could a Marxist Critical Theorist (Fromm) and a Christian mystic (Weil) share in common, that could somehow help explain what is going on with a bunch of rebranded fascists (the “alt-right”) today? This peculiar convergence is born in part of a surprising synchronicity, revolving around a single term: “the void.”

Lgbt Hate Crime: Promoting A Queer Agenda For Hate Crime Scholarship, James Pickles Sep 2019

Lgbt Hate Crime: Promoting A Queer Agenda For Hate Crime Scholarship, James Pickles

Journal of Hate Studies

Hate crime laws in England and Wales have emerged as a response from many decades of the criminal justice system overlooking the structural and institutional oppression faced by minorities. The murder of Stephen Lawrence highlighted the historic neglect and myopia of racist hate crime by criminal justice agencies. It also exposed the institutionalised racism within the police in addition to the historic neglect of minority groups (Macpherson, 1999). The publication of the inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence prompted a move to protect minority populations, which included the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Currently, Section 28 of …

The Pink Triangle As An Interruptive Symbol, Marnie Rorholm, Kem Gambrell Sep 2019

The Pink Triangle As An Interruptive Symbol, Marnie Rorholm, Kem Gambrell

Journal of Hate Studies

The Pink Triangle is a symbol of collective memory and meaning for two very different, but similarly marginalized groups: gay male prisoners held in concentration camps in Nazi Germany, and the modern LGBTQAI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, asexual/allied and intersexed) community. Since the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in the mid 1940’s, many memorials to the Holocaust, as well as several for the Pink Triangle victims have sprung up around the world. While there are a number of reasons for these memorials, one premise is that these monuments serve as a way to create a collective memory, with …

Hate, Conflict, And Public Space: Stand Your Ground Laws And Potential Immunity For Hate Crimes, Jennifer N. Grimes Sep 2019

Hate, Conflict, And Public Space: Stand Your Ground Laws And Potential Immunity For Hate Crimes, Jennifer N. Grimes

Journal of Hate Studies

Statistics reveal that hate crimes in the United States have increased for the past two years in a row. From 2014 to 2016, the number of reported hate crimes has increased from 5,479 in 2014, to 5,850 in 2015, to 6,121 in 2016. These numbers do not include crimes that were not shared with the FBI by local law enforcement, or crimes that were not reported to the police at all. Early indicators reveal that the number of hate crimes in 2017 is expected to further continue this upward trend. The current social and political climate has raised much concern …

Ministering To Other People's Fears: Effects Of Anti-Muslim Hostility On American Muslim Participation In Public Life, Caleb Elfenbein Sep 2019

Ministering To Other People's Fears: Effects Of Anti-Muslim Hostility On American Muslim Participation In Public Life, Caleb Elfenbein

Journal of Hate Studies

This article explores the manifestations and effects of anti-Muslim hostility in the United States, asking how anti-Muslim hostility affects the nature of American Muslim participation in public life. It argues that cultural trauma among American Muslim communities, resulting from an expectation of routine harm, conditions the nature of participation in public life undertaken by many American Muslims. Drawing on original datasets documenting anti-Muslim hostility and outreach efforts undertaken by American Muslim communities, we can see that ministering to non-Muslim fears has become a central element of participation in public life. This burden of “humanization” pushes us to consider central elements …
