Generalized Self-Efficacy Of Youth In The New Territories: A Community Survey Conducted By A Hong Kong Ngo, Robert W. Spires, Eric Howington, Jay Rojewski Sep 2019

Generalized Self-Efficacy Of Youth In The New Territories: A Community Survey Conducted By A Hong Kong Ngo, Robert W. Spires, Eric Howington, Jay Rojewski

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

Youth are both key participants in debate and a central theme in the discourse on social issues in Hong Kong. Youth are often problematized in the contemporary media and political discussion as lacking in the work ethic, confidence and social skills necessary to be successful. Hong Kong youth are framed as pathologically shy, anti-social, lazy and entitled and these characteristics are used to present an image of Hong Kong youth as having individual characteristics that lead to their challenges in the job market and their characteristics as political rogues. This study approaches the characterization of Hong Kong youth with an …

Knowledge Sharing Process In World Wildlife Found For Nature Indonesia, Fadli Febrian, Kiki Fauziah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This research discusses the process of knowledge sharing at World Wildlife Fund for Nature Indonesia (WWF Indonesia). The purposes of this research were to describe the processes, driving factors, and barriers that influence the knowledge sharing in WWF Indonesia. This research was a qualitative study with a case study as method. The results of this study indicate that the process of knowledge sharing in WWF Indonesia is divided into three processes; the first process is identification, the second process is the assessment of the availability of knowledge, and the last process is the creation of knowledge sharing programs. The knowledge …

Latent Classes Of Childhood Maltreatment, Adult Sexual Assault, And Revictimization In Men: Differences In Masculinity, Anger, And Substance Use., Ruby Charak, Lee R. Eshelman, Terri L. Messman-Moore

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Male sexual abuse has been associated with a number of maladaptive outcomes; however, there is a dearth of research on male revictimization, that is, experiences of victimization in both childhood and adulthood. The current study examined different patterns of victimization based on five types of childhood maltreatment and characteristics of adult sexual assault via latent class analysis. Further, the present study assessed differences across these latent classes in the domains of masculinity, anger, and substance use. A community sample of 294 men ranging in age from 18 to 66 years (M = 32.71; SD = 9.73) was recruited via …

Innovative Information Literacy Landscapes: Leveraging The Specialized Knowledge Of Lgbtq+ Communities In Research And Practice, Vanessa Kitzie Sep 2019

Innovative Information Literacy Landscapes: Leveraging The Specialized Knowledge Of Lgbtq+ Communities In Research And Practice, Vanessa Kitzie

Faculty Publications

This paper examines how Knowledge School principles can help libraries develop a more nuanced understanding of how social and cultural differences shape knowledge production and dissimi-nation within LGBTQ+ communities. I focus on information literacy (IL), in which practitioners teach individuals to seek, evaluate, and use information. IL can empower communities by enhancing education, confidence, and decision-making. However, libraries often approach IL from a deficit, skills-based perspective by envisioning communities as lacking the requisite knowledge to fulfill their information needs. As a Knowledge School, we need to move away from one-size-fits-all approaches to librarianship. Through research, we can understand how communities …

How Do Interest Rates Affect Market Capitalization Growth Rates In The Us?, Philip Carolin Sep 2019

How Do Interest Rates Affect Market Capitalization Growth Rates In The Us?, Philip Carolin

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper investigates how interest rates affect the market capitalization growth rate of individual companies in the US. The research will distinguish itself from previous literature as it analyzes company and macroeconomic data after the 2008 recession. This is particularly interesting as interest rates have been historically low in this time period. Previous research suggests that since the Great Recession the effects of interest rate changes have decreased. On the contrary I will argue that the effects of interest rates still appear to be significant and substantial when explaining the market capitalization growth rate.

SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal

Background/objectives
Malnutrition is evident in hospitals and stroke patients are at increased risk. Protected mealtimes may help increase nutrient intake especially when patients interact and enjoy the dining room atmosphere. The aim of this research is to investigate if eating in a communal dining room increases nutritional intake compared to eating at the bedside and to investigate whether patient interaction and mood affects patient nutrient intake.

Population/methods:
A randomised cross-sectional study of 20 patients, assessing a comparison of patient’s mealtime consumption at lunchtime in the dining room and at the beside. Patients’ meals were weighed before and after consumption as …

Let’S Talk: An Examination Of Parental Involvement As A Predictor Of Stem Achievement In Math For High School Girls, Nicol R. Howard, Keith E. Howard, Randy T. Busse, Christine Hunt

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This research was conducted to examine the influence of parental involvement, in the form of parent conversations, on mathematics achievement for high school girls. Data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) public-use file provided a sample of 13,694 students, including 6,592 girls for our analyses. A scale for measuring parent conversations was developed and regression analyses were conducted to examine whether this scale variable predicted mathematics achievement. Results indicated that conversational parental involvement was a significant predictor of mathematics achievement for Black and White girls, but not Hispanic and Asian. Implications for research and policy initiatives are …

Fantasy Football As Sport And Game, Osvaldo Jimenez Sep 2019

Fantasy Football As Sport And Game, Osvaldo Jimenez

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

In an issue that aims to explore questions and the relationship between sports and games, I propose that looking at fantasy sports is an important angle from which to explore this relationship. The term fantasy sports can be a broad term if looked at as incorporating elements of fantasy into sport. For example, many of the most popular sporting games, like Madden (Visual Concepts Entertainment, Inc., 1993), already form a relationship between sports and game by using recent player data and incorporating that information into a game. One could argue that such a game already constitutes a fantasy sport. Nonetheless, …

The Mere Mention Of Asians In Affirmative Action, Jennifer Lee, Van C. Tran Sep 2019

The Mere Mention Of Asians In Affirmative Action, Jennifer Lee, Van C. Tran

Publications and Research

Presumed competent, U.S. Asians evince exceptional educational outcomes but lack the cultural pedigree of elite whites that safeguard them from bias in the labor market. In spite of their nonwhite minority status, Asians also lack the legacy of disadvantage of blacks that make them eligible beneficiaries of affirmative action. Their labor market disadvantage coupled with their exclusion from affirmative action programs place Asians in a unique bind: do they support policies that give preferences to blacks but exclude them? Given their self- and group interests, this bind should make Asians unlikely to do so. We assess whether this is the …

Child Poverty Declines Slightly In 2018 To 18 Percent, Jess Carson Sep 2019

Child Poverty Declines Slightly In 2018 To 18 Percent, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this data snapshot, author Jessica Carson reports that according to analyses of new American Community Survey data released today, nearly one-in-five American children were poor in 2018. While child poverty has finally returned to pre-recession rates, the 0.4 percentage point decline since 2017 continues the trend of incremental decreases in child poverty since the post-recession peak in 2012.

Development Of A Peer Research Consultant (Prc) Program, Kristen Borysewicz, Karlene T. Clark, Holly Gabriel

Librarian Posters and Presentations

The reference desk at UND’s main library has seen a steady decline in the number of reference questions. Starting in Fall 2019, we will use peer research consultants (PRCs) to staff the reference desk and go out to campus to promote their service. Reference librarians will be able to do more library instruction and outreach for their departments, and undergraduate students will see their peer as a helpful resource for academic success. The PRCs will also assist with instruction sessions.

Availability And Accessibility As Factors Affecting The Use Of Information Resources By Insurance Practitioners In Ibadan, Oyo State, Samuel Olusegun Olusegun Adepoju Mr, Jemilat Iyabo Arilesere Mrs, Hafeez Folounsho Ajibona Mr

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

Insurance practitioners need information for their daily work activities, especially decision-making and way of implementing the decisions for organizational sources. Several studies have been carried out on information variables (information accessibility, availability and information) in academic institutions and libraries but few on insurance practitioners in Ibadan. The study, therefore investigates availability and accessibility as factors affecting the use of information resources by insurance practitioners in Ibadan. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The study population was ten insurance companies in Ibadan out of which a sample of four companies was selected. A total of 100 or 83.3% …

Building Infrastructure For African Human Genomic Data Management, Ziyaad Parker, Suresh Maslamoney, Ayton Meintjes, Gerrit Botha, Sumir Panji, Scott Hazelhurst, Nicola Mulder Sep 2019

Building Infrastructure For African Human Genomic Data Management, Ziyaad Parker, Suresh Maslamoney, Ayton Meintjes, Gerrit Botha, Sumir Panji, Scott Hazelhurst, Nicola Mulder

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Human genomic data are large and complex, and require adequate infrastructure for secure storage and transfer. The NIH and The Wellcome Trust have funded multiple projects on genomic research, including the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) initiative, and data are required to be deposited into the public domain. The European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) is a repository for sequence and genotype data where the data access is controlled by access committees. Access is determined by a formal application procedure for the purpose of secure storage and distribution, and must be in line with the informed consent of the study …

An Investigation Of The Identity Of Naturalised Players In The Hong Kong Representative Football Team From The Perspective Of Different Hong Kong Football Stakeholders, Sheung Ching Yung Sep 2019

An Investigation Of The Identity Of Naturalised Players In The Hong Kong Representative Football Team From The Perspective Of Different Hong Kong Football Stakeholders, Sheung Ching Yung

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The study of identity is a controversial topic in football (soccer) and is of growing interest in social science research. Over the past few years, increasing numbers of naturalised players from Africa, Europe, South America and Mainland China are selected on the Hong Kong representative football team. This has created much heated debate among the Hong Kong public and fans on the topic of naturalised players. This thesis first outlines conceptual aspects of identity and argues with special reference to the literature on sporting sociology and politics. If then asks research questions on “why do public suddenly pay much attention …
