Major findings of a national project on identifying standards for the training of interpreters for deaf people are presented. The data produced for this project was based on information collected from two separate national surveys during Summer and Fall, 1987. Selected findings on the student, faculty, and program characteristicsof51federal and non-federal sponsored interpreter training programs are presented. Attention is then directed to a summary of the opinions of a sample of403 interpreter educators, interpreting service professionals, and deaf and hearing consumers regarding desirable competencies for interpreter trainees to attain as part of their training. The role of the gay/lesbian person in the deaf culture and communication problems which contribute to or interfere with self acceptance as well as family or community acceptance are the focal points for this article. Changes that have been made in the deaf culture and in the culture at large in respect to sexual identity issues and the comparison of communities (deaf to gay/lesbian) are also outlined. Although not addressing very aspect of the issues surrounding the deaf, gay/lesbian client, this article provides suggestions for counselors and others who may be confronted with these issues.

Parenting Resources Of Deaf Parents With Hearing Children, Barbara L. Mallory, Jerome D. Schein, Harvey W. Zingle

Parenting resources and counseling needs of deaf parents with school-aged hearing offspring were explored as part of a larger cross-sectional descriptive study of perceptions of deaf parents' child-rearing performance. Three categories of informant provided research data. Fifteen deaf parent/hearing child dyads were interviewed. Parents also completed short questionnaires. Hearing grandparents, fewer than half of whom live near their deaf adults offspring, responded to mailed surveys. Questionnaires provided quantitative results showing that deaf parents turned more frequently to relatives and friends than to professionals for help with child-rearing problems. It is argued that additional monies will effect change in teenage pregnancy, reduce chronic discipline problems in schools, and lower dropout rates. Effect Of Age, Sex, Hearing Loss And Etiology Upon Manual Dexterity Skill Of Deaf Children, John M. Zody, Dean R. Gorman

The primary purpose was to determine the effect age, sex, hearing loss, and etiology had on the performance of manipulative tests. A secondary purpose was to investigate the relationship between reaction time and manual dexterity. Fifty subjects with deafness, age eight to fifteen, participated. ANOVA revealed one significant difference between etiological groups. Ten significant differences were identified for age. Post-hoc evaluation identified the performance of the youngest and oldest age groups to be significantly different. Two-sample independent t-tests were performed to investigate the between group differences of severe <= 90 db vs. profound >90 db hearing loss and male vs. female. There was no significant …

The present study was to determine conservation and metaphor performance of 35 children who used cued speech or ora1/alural communication modes. Correlations between conservation and metaphor responses and their relationships to age, specialized educational program, degree of hearing loss, and communication mode were conducted for a descriptive analysis. Certain significant relationships were found and discussed. Educational implications and recommendations were indicated.

This paper describes the success which New York State has had with an Advisory Committee to the State Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. It describes the success the committee has had in sensitizing the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation to the unique communication needs of their deaf clients, and in getting communication standards established for counselors and interpreters who work with deaf clients. In addition, the paper describes some future priorities which must be addressed to further enhance services to deaf rehabilitation clients.
