Mediated Communication For Deaf Postsecondary Students In The United States, Barbara L. Mallory, Jerome D. Schein

The increasing numbers of deaf students in postsecondary education place a strain on the institution's resources. To obtain information on how U.S. colleges and universities address this problem, all institutions having significant numbers of deaf students were sent a questionnaire. The results of the survey reveal an awareness of assistive listening devices and depict a variety of approaches to recruiting, orienting, and supervising sign-language interpreters. In addition, the sale of assistive listening devices is briefly discussed. Models for managing interpreter services are examined with respect to their advantages and disadvantages.

Problem Solving: A Comparison Of Hearing-Impaired And Hearing Individuals, John Luckner

The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a group of hearing-impaired young adults with a group of hearing individuals with regard to the number of moves and the time used to complete a problem solving task. Results indicated that the hearing group were able to solve the problem in less moves and faster than the hearing-impaired group. Suggestions for intervention and future research are presented.

Therapists and counselors who work with deaf clients are beginning to note that some form of eating disorders and distortions in body image perception do exist. To understand the difficulty of eating and related disorders and their inroads into the deaf community, it is important to know the differences between the various related disorders. This article introduces eating disorders and body perception and provides a brief look at some of the ways in which counselors might be more attuned to the prevalence of these disorders among their deaf clients.

In the mid-latitudes, snow plays a critical role in regional hydroclimate, with snow ablation variability in ephemeral regions representing an area of essential research. Due to a lack of historical snow-water-equivalent data in the eastern United States, recent research has substituted daily snow depth changes for ablation. These studies, however, do not explicitly examine if such a substitution yields a snowmelt hydrological signal, an important component of water resource management. As such, this study evaluates if ablation events, as defined as a daily snow depth decrease, subsequently result in increased river discharge within two similarly sized watersheds in the eastern …
