The Challenges And Opportunities From The Wto Accession – The Case Of Kosovo, Fisnik Muça

UBT International Conference

Kosovo is one of the newest countries in the world, which, after in- dependence in 2008, has made many efforts to establish a western democratic

system and a free market economy. As a partially recognized state and disputed territory by Serbia and its allies, Kosovo became a part of the Central European

Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) in 2007, initially as UMNIK, then under its of- ficial name. This research paper intends to highlight the need for Kosovo to be a

The Hobbit, Media Audiences, And The Question Of Genre, Lars Schmeink Oct 2019

The Hobbit, Media Audiences, And The Question Of Genre, Lars Schmeink

Journal of Tolkien Research

The Hobbit (1937) by J. R. R. Tolkien is one of Britain’s, if not one of the world’s, most beloved children’s books, whereas his The Lord of the Rings (1954-55) is today considered the keystone text of the modern fantasy genre. Similarly Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings has become the defining fantasy film, setting new standards for fantasy to become a mainstream cinematic genre. Based on data collected by the largest audience study to date, the World Hobbit Project, this article argues that the success of Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy is thus linked to its …

How does free help me? Useful things like GPS Software

Posted: October 25th, 2019

Once upon a time the only way to find an address was to look at a paper map. Remember your first day at UCF? How hard it was to find the right building? Did you get lost? That used to be true going pretty much any place new.

Now with GPS, you can have someone tell you how to get somewhere step by step. You can even select a British or Australian narrator. Like many conveniences in our lives, this is a result of the …

Singapore, Land Use And The Lessons For Human Development, Wellington Migliari Oct 2019

Singapore, Land Use And The Lessons For Human Development, Wellington Migliari

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

A study of the impact of using land use controls as a strategic tool to further human development among all social classes is presented. We advocate that human rights include a long-term practice of combining public policies, manufacturing industry, and property system. Further, this study strives to educate economists and those in other academic areas (e.g. humanities) on the importance of considering land use, ownership, and urban planning with economics to form a new theory of developmentalism. Singapore provides a case study demonstrating similar aspects that may shed light on that debate. The Housing & Development Board and the Urban …

Rainwater Harvesting: Legal Frameworks In The United States, Singapore And Other Countries, Julian Conrad Juergensmeyer, Audra Durham

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

With increasing climate change effects worldwide, rainwater harvesting is likely to become more and more important to ensure reliable alternative water supply and to conserve the environment. This article examines two goals to be accomplished through rainwater harvesting: (1) augmenting water supply for proposed development’s use through regulations that have been formulated to make the proposed development responsible for at least a portion of the water supply needed to support the new development; and (2) managing stormwater runoff. The results show that many, perhaps most, rainwater harvesting programs, as exemplified by efforts in Singapore and elsewhere around the world, succeed …

The European Union Perspective On Cultural Heritage And Climate Change Issues, Maria Kenig-Witkowska

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

The paper examines the European Union perspective on the cultural heritage and climate change issues. It starts with drawing up the international law approach to the subject. Whereas the studies on impact of climate change on human environment have become fundamental research in various fields of science, the international community has not yet carried on any serious discussion on the issue of the protection of the cultural heritage in this context. In the first part of this paper the cultural heritage and climate change issues will be discussed from two perspectives - the 1972 World Heritage Convention, and the 1992 …

Coastal Cultural Heritage Protection In The United States, France And The United Kingdom, Ryan Rowberry, Ismat Hanano, Sutton M. Freedman, Michelle Wilco, Cameron Kline

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

Exacerbated by climate change, sea levels are rising rapidly. This poses a significant, immediate threat to coastal or riverine urban areas and the tangible cultural heritage (e.g. artifacts, buildings, monuments, archaeological sites) that makes them unique. Protecting coastal cultural resources from climate change is quickly becoming a global priority, and comparing cultural heritage laws designed to protect historic resources in coastal areas from several countries may illuminate potential paths forward. Following a brief discussion of the economic and public health benefits arising from the protection of cultural heritage, this article describes, examines, and compares the legal frameworks through which the …

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

The Wissahickon Creek Watershed is one of five major watersheds in the Philadelphia metro region. The main objective of the work in this paper was to determine and compare the energy and environmental impacts of placing housing in the Watershed according to profitability and environmental sustainability criteria, respectively, in the context of increasing urbanization. Future population and employment for the Watershed have been projected by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. Housing requirements for the projected populations in each municipality were computed, and their location was influenced by the local zoning ordinances. Suitability analysis using ArcGIS 10.6 generated areas for …

Dear Society, Anonymous

SURGE

“I can not wait to study abroad” multiple friends tell me

All I do is shake my head and reply “mhm I can not wait either”

I lied to them

I can not go out of the country, I can not explore the world

I am stuck in one place

This place is known as the United States of America that one day they said will bring the American Dream for my family

I wake up each day and I live in a world of fear, mistrust, and silence..." [excerpt]

Co-Prescription Network Reveals Social Dynamics Of Opioid Doctor Shopping, Brea L. Perry, Kai Cheng Yang, Patrick Kaminski, Meltem Odabas, Jaehyuk Park, Michelle M. Martel, Carrie B. Oser, Patricia R. Freeman, Yong-Yeol Ahn, Jeffery C. Talbert

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper examines network prominence in a co-prescription network as an indicator of opioid doctor shopping (i.e., fraudulent solicitation of opioids from multiple prescribers). Using longitudinal data from a large commercially insured population, we construct a network where a tie between patients is weighted by the number of shared opioid prescribers. Given prior research suggesting that doctor shopping may be a social process, we hypothesize that active doctor shoppers will occupy central structural positions in this network. We show that network prominence, operationalized using PageRank, is associated with more opioid prescriptions, higher predicted risk for dangerous morphine dosage, opioid overdose, …

Having Our Say: Engaging Ill And Liaison Librarians In Metadata Curation In Eds, Jeffrey M. Mortimore

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

Deciding whether to support discovery of metadata for unsubscribed content raises a lot of questions for technical and public services librarians, from the philosophical to the pragmatic. Doing so requires careful curation and monitoring of metadata sources, and benefits from library-wide input. During this session, presenters describe their process for vetting metadata collections with ILL and liaison librarians for inclusion in EDS. This involves a three-step evaluation of collections for overall metadata quality, likelihood of ILL fulfillment, and value to the collection. Over the course of this evaluation, technical services, ILL, and liaison librarians each “have their say” on whether …
