The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments of2008 rescued many qualified deaf job seekers and deaf workers from U.S. Supreme Court decisions that significantly limited the definition of disability for the purposes of ADA Title I private employment rights. The Title I amendments and decisions are described; practical implications and actions are suggested.

The authors present a framework and practical strategies for engaging deaf persons who have language and learning challenges as well as sexual offending behaviors in sex offender oriented mental health treatment. Current treatment approaches for persons who commit sexual offenses are reviewed along with modifications that have been made for persons with intellectual impairments. The additional challenges when the persons referred are deaf and poor language users are explored. The treatment resources for helping this sub group of deaf persons with highly specialized needs are limited, and the common fallacy that a "signing clinician" with some knowledge of sexual offending …

The Deaf Off Drugs & Alcohol (DODA) Program provides culturally appropriate recovery services via e-therapy to Deaf and hard of hearing (HH) individuals with substance use disorder (SUD). In the first three years DODA was providing services,149 consumers (107 Deaf, 42 HH) received treatment. A retrospective secondary data analysis sought to examine the lifetime prevalence of suicidal behavior in Deaf individuals receiving alcohol and drug treatment services from the DODA program. The prevalence of self-reported lifetime suicide attempts in the Deaf sample was 42.1%, higher than rates reported for other subgroups with coexisting conditions. Suicidal ideation was reported by 50.5% …

Improved functioning is typical when deaf mental health consumers are removed from inaccessible programming and placed in accessible environments. Observed gains have long-provided convincing evidence that social interaction (in sign language) is essential to recovery from mental illness. Still, many deaf people reside in psychiatric settings alongside others with whom they cannot communicate. A focus group was convened to investigate services in New York's Capital Region. Identified barriers included lack of deaf clinicians, scarcity of qualified mental health interpreters, and funding restrictions. As a result, it has been the subject of academic studies, considerable news reporting, and even a documentary; it has benefited from targeted policies at the city level. Targeting specific ZIP codes, rather than other types of geographic area can raise certain issues, however. Which Sectors Hold The Key To India's Future Economic Growth?, Hardik A. Marfatia

This paper explores sectors that hold the key to India's future economic growth. The forecasts of economic growth from an autoregressive distributed lag model with stock market sectoral indices are analyzed against the benchmark autoregressive model forecasts across several forecast horizons. Results show that the information from sectoral indices improves forecasts of economic growth. However, the forecast superiority is not uniform across sectors and horizons. Auto, consumers' spending, material, metal, oil and gas, and realty sectors provide the most forecasting gains. In contrast, bankex, capital goods, finance, and industrial sectors provide superior forecasts only at horizons above one year. FMCG …

In the current neoliberal climate that has stoked an intense intercity competition for internationally footloose capital, many cities with global aspirations are encouraging urban redevelopment projects that brand and promote heterogeneous cultural enclaves as destinations for leisure and tourism consumption. Oftentimes, such enclaves emerge as "ethnoscapes" that ostensibly express the cultural identity of its residents, usually immigrant populations. In Chicago, municipal policies aimed at enhancing a visitor economy have been instrumental in the creation of the Paseo Boricua, a Puerto Rican "ethnoscape". The study used qualitative research methods to examine cultural beliefs, specifically those that are spiritual, as well as gender-related norms to explicate HIV/AIDS risk behaviors among deaf persons residing in rural and peri-urban areas of Kwa Zulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Existing findings, though limited, suggest that there are insufficient understandings among deaf South Africans about HIV/AIDS. While the deaf population exceeds 4 million, they are among the least educated, most illiterate, and least employed, and experience higher rates of poverty. This article focuses on identity development among individuals who grew up as the only hearing child in an otherwise all-deaf family. Being the only hearing child (assuming they have deaf siblings) is quite different from being one of a number of hearing children of deaf parents. It is critical to enhance awareness among parents, teachers, and mental health professionals of such obstacles, particularly for children who are the only hearing members of their deaf families.

The study of Disaster Relief has received increasing attention for the better part of 20 years, and particularly in the wake of high-visibility storms like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, there is little need to provide justification for the field as an area of interest. This presentation will summarize an ongoing effort to study one particular aspect of Disaster Relief, namely last-mile distribution in the face of uncertain supply. This body of work forms the bulk of my dissertation which I completed last year along with my co-author and mentor Dr. Emmett Lodree, a full Professor at the University of Alabama.

The Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT; Frederick, 2005) is the dominant measure of adult individual differences in analytic vs. intuitive cognitive style. The task was designed to measure a person's tendency to override and inhibit an intuitive response that is incorrect and engage in deliberate reflection that leads to a correct response. The CRT is a meaningful predictor of a diverse range of adult psychological and behavioral outcomes, including conceptual change in science and math learning (Shtulman & McCallum, 2014; Gómez-Chacón et al., 2014). The purpose of my talk is to discuss how conjunctions function in different languages and to show how they contribute to a better understanding of the implicit knowledge we have as speakers of a language. In English, coordinating conjunctions such as ‘and’ can link a diverse range of grammatical categories: noun phrases (NP), verb phrases (VP), adjective and adverb phrases (AP), clauses, etc. Cross-linguistically, however, there are many languages that have category specific coordinating conjunctions, and such languages show that the function of coordinating conjunctions extends beyond organizing discourse. Effects Of A School-Based Social-Emotional And Character Development Program On Peer, Family, School, And Neighborhood Contexts: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial, Naida Silverthorn, Kendra M. Lewis, Niloofar Bavarian, David L. Dubois, Alan C. Acock, Samuel Vuchinich

Aims: To evaluate the impact of a school-based social-emotional and character development program on the various socializing contexts of youth. Methods: A matched-pair, cluster-randomized controlled trial included 1,170 students from 14, low-income, urban, Chicago Public Schools. Outcomes were assessed longitudinally for a cohort of youth followed from grades 3 to 8. Multilevel growth-curve modeling and endpoint analyses were conducted on indicators of peer, family, school, and neighborhood contexts. Results: Students in PA schools had slower rates of decline and higher end-point scores than students in non-PA schools across all of the contexts examined.
