Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorder is an emergent public health problem known to HIV researchers and scientists, but unfortunately, is a concern that still needs to be better recognized by people living with HIV and HIV service providers. Research studies have reported that between 30 to 50% of people living with HIV who have access to combination antiretroviral therapy are and will be affected by this disorder. This raises the need to find more appropriate research approaches for examining issues that will significantly impact people living with HIV experiencing or at risk of developing neurocognitive impairments. The Qualitative Report
The population over 60 years old is growing rapidly in Norway and in many other countries, and researchers often focus on elderly people and various diseases. This article examines the healthy elderly who are active in their daily lives to understand their motivation and knowledge about food and meals. The method used was CurroCus® group interviews, or fast focus groups. Nine CurroCus® groups were conducted, lasting for 37 to 56 minutes (average = 45 minutes). Altogether, 76 persons participated, ranging in age from 60 to 87 years; participants were predominantly female (>80%). The article discusses two areas: motivation and …

The day-to-day increasing costs of petrol and diesel and to control the air pollution makes an impact to do a scientometric analysis on the research ouput on “Electric Car”. Therefore, the research publications indexed in Web of Science for 28 years have been downloaded from 1991 to 2018 for the analysis. The research reveals that a total of 2424 publications is published during the above-mentioned year. As a consequence of limited access to health information, Deaf and hard of hearing (Deaf/ hh)’ individuals may be at higher risk for health complications and tobacco-related diseases. To address this issue, Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) of Oklahoma sought funding from the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust to implement the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Tobacco Use and Cessation Program. The five-year project began in 2006; it was the first major health education initiative in the state that focused on the Deaf community. The Effect Of Mothers’ Asl Skill Level On The English Literacy Of Their Deaf Children, Shauna M. Buchholz, Lorin Lachs, Patrick Boudreault

Previous studies demonstrated a positive relationship between deaf children's ASL acquisition and their English literacy skills and the importance of parental language input. This study examined the role of mothers' ASL skill in the English literacy skills of their deaf children. Mothers and their deaf children in grades six through nine took the TGJASL-R. Correlations were performed to determine if a relationship exists between the mothers' ASL skill level, and the children's English literacy measured by the STAR test. No significant relationship was found; marginal significance was found between the students' ASL skill and their English literacy score.

As the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR, 1994) is under revision, the complexity of diagnosing and treating childhood trauma with the current trauma-related diagnoses, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)is being debated (van der Kolk,2 005). Regarding deaf individuals, significant differences in symptom presentation (e.g., avoidance/numbing, hyperarousal, and re-experiencing symptoms) suggest that caution is needed when using the current criterion for the diagnosis of PTSD within this population (Schild & Dalenberg, 2011). Spirituality is increasingly being used in both assessment and intervention strategies. Available peer-reviewed literature and recent published dissertations are reviewed related to spirituality and religion among deaf and hard of hearing people. Knowledge is integrated in the context of mental health practitioners who work with deaf and hard of hearing people. Several themes including disability meanings, communication, family dynamics, and macro accessibility and representation are identified as topics to be applied to current mental health practice and future mental health research related to spirituality among deaf and hard of hearing people.

The need to increase teacher diversity in deaf education has been a national concern over the last decade. The ethnic, racial, cultural, and linguistic composition of the teaching force has remained relatively unchanged; White, hearing, females make up the majority of the teaching force. The pedagogy of Service-Learning is a new addition to the field of Deaf Studies. As a new and non-traditional course, the implementation of a Deaf Studies Service-Learning course is a challenging task. One challenge is to develop several multi-directional relationships between the faculty member, students, deaf consumers, and community partners from deaf- related rehabilitation agencies. Another issue is addressing the major challenges identified in the Service-Learning literature. Utilizing recommendations made by an experienced faculty member, these challenges are surmountable. This combination of in-class and out-of-class pedagogy enriches Deaf Studies students' learning experience serving the deaf consumers in "real world" settings.

In today's society, it is important for researchers and practitioners to note that the generation known as the Baby Boomers is more than a socio-demographic clump; it represents a significant part of the population. This paper will be reviewing the issues facing the deaf baby boomer’s population and how they are contrasted to their hearing counterparts. The areas examined include social/political, technological, physical health care, and mental healthcare. Safely operating vehicles require significant visual attention. While attention can be divided, cognitive resources are not limitless. Deaf and hearing participants engaged in a simulated driving task while simultaneously engaging in a conversation in their preferred language. Results indicated that hearing drivers may have a performance advantage over deaf drivers, though it is so minor that it will not likely be seen outside of the laboratory setting. The results also indicated differing cognitive processing among hearing and deaf drivers. The results may inform policy, reduce stigma, and serve as the base for future research on deaf-specific cognitive factors of driving.
Employment And Independent Living Skills Of Public School High School Deaf Students: Analyses Of The Transition Competence Battery Response Patterns, Pamela Luft

The Transition Competence Battery was used to study employment and independent living skill preparation of 38 of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students from four public high school programs. Participants demonstrated substantial needs in performing standard computations, in recognizing common terminology and across several independent living competencies. Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant improvements in two subtest scores for employment subtests with none for independent living. Poor overall competency levels suggest that vocational rehabilitation counselors should expect some skill and training needs. This assessment may assist in identifying needs that impact career success.

The author was the director or co-director of a specialty Deaf psychiatric inpatient unit for 17 of its 23 years. In Part 1 of this article, the author reflected on the lessons learned about deaf psychiatric patients from this experience. These lessons include recognition of the wide continuum of communication skills and deficits of the deaf persons served and the significant numbers of deaf patients who have poor communication skills in any language. Competition for the right job is a challenge and there are specific hurdles faced by job seekers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Unfortunately, many employers know little about hearing loss.
