Transitions And New Beginnings (2019-2020), Lauren Toy
Transitions And New Beginnings (2019-2020), Lauren Toy
Critical Evaluation
n her critical evaluation, Toy focuses on the progress she has made in developing her writing process as a college-level writer. Rather than relying solely on personal experience, Toy balances her essay with an analysis of her own experiences and first-person perspective and the use of several sources on writing and the writing process, including the textbook They Say/I Say. She uses her sources overall to support the claims and observations that she is bringing to her own writing, while she is talking about having learned that writing skill.

My Journey Through Writing (2019-2020), Nicholas Delillo
Critical Evaluation
In this student example of a critical evaluation we can see how DeLillo makes claims about how his writing works based on citing from his essays within CPN 100, as well as citing from instructor comments and peer review feedback. By using his own writing and feedback he received as “texts,” DeLillo’s critical evaluation offers an example of critical evaluation in the form of an analysis, where the object of study is his own writing in CPN 100.

Alzheimer's Disease Research Insights: Impacts, Trends, Opportunities, Analytical Services, Elsevier
Public Reports
Alzheimer’s disease research represents a steady share of global output. There is a focus on the peptide, amyloid-β, but interesting behavioral topics are emerging. To understand the landscape of Alzheimer’s disease research, we queried Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature.
Research on Alzheimer’s disease has increased steadily in volume since 1980 and 50,614 items related to Alzheimer’s disease were published from 2014-2018. Compared with global research output, Alzheimer’s disease research has grown at the same pace as research overall and has represented 0.35- 0.4% of all research done globally between 2012 and 2018.

Evaluating Project Safe Neighborhoods In Connecticut: A Youth Opportunity Initiative, Sara A. Jeffries, David Myers, Jonathan A. Kringen, Ron Schack
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Despite containing numerous wealthy geographic areas, the state of Connecticut continues to struggle with social and economic distress, along with gun-related crime. Problem analysis in urban areas revealed a critical need for services aimed at deterring violent and gun-related crime in two target populations: serious juvenile offenders, aged 14–17 years, and at-risk youth, aged 11–13 years. Using a quasi-experimental design, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) on youth in two cities in Connecticut. Implementation resulted in 133 young people receiving a variety of services in New Haven and Bridgeport. Evaluation research assessed intervention efforts …

This longitudinal study, with urban and rural preschool children, examines the relationship between executive function (EF) and mathematics. A panel of direct and indirect measures of EF were used to determine which EF measures were most predictive and a measure of mathematics assessed both numeracy and geometry skill. One hundred eighteen children, ages 39 to 68 months, and their preschool teachers were included, with assessments given twice, about six months apart. EF measures were compared by the amount of variance in mathematics skill each claimed, including the influence of a child’s age, gender, and rural-urban context. Results suggest the child’s …

Multicultural Face Recognition Memory And Own-Race-Bias Among Adults With Acquired Brain Injury, Nia M. Billings
Multicultural Face Recognition Memory And Own-Race-Bias Among Adults With Acquired Brain Injury, Nia M. Billings
Wayne State University Dissertations
Own-race bias (ORB) is a well-documented phenomenon that may influence face memory, such that face memory is improved when the observed target matches the observer’s racial background. However, the clinical measures widely used in neuropsychological evaluations lack racial diversity that may disenfranchise and disadvantage minority patients. Further, these existing measures have been criticized for having inconsistent visual contrast and facial content, as well as too much variability of non-facial information which may confound its acceptability as a measure of face memory specifically. To address these limitations, standardized, multicultural images with validated facial expressions (Beaupré et al., 2000) were used to …

The Beat Goes On: Arthur Choo, Ishan Singh
Social Space
Meet Arthur Choo, 31, artiste and founder of BEAT’ABOX Group, a cajon school in Singapore.Besides performing and conducting workshops for companies and schools, Arthur and his team hope to make the cajon (pronounced “kah-hone”, a wooden box played like a drum) the bridge between society and marginalised groups, including at-risk youth, senior citizens and people with disabilities. There are no barriers to taking up this art form at BEAT’ABOX—there are cajons specially designed for the hearing-impaired (they light up when struck), smaller-sized cajons that can fit into the laps of the wheelchair- bound, and so on. ISHAN SINGH speaks to …

"How Do I Look?": The Fashion Industry Needs A Makeover, Trang Chu Minh
Social Space
Despite the rise of socially responsible businesses and conscious shoppers, the fashion industry seems to be falling behind. It is common to read reports of clothing brands whose ethics and manufacturing practices are called into question—some even accused of slavery in their supply chains. But errant retailers aside, one still wonders: given the seasonal nature of what’s “on trend” and the prevalence of “fast fashion”, can this industry ever break out of the cycle of overproduction and overconsumption?

Insight From Insiders: A Phenomenological Study For Exploring Food Tourism Policy In Ireland 2009-2019, Ketty Quigley, Margaret Connolly, Elaine Mahon, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Articles
This paper focuses on how the phenomenon of food tourism developed in Ireland between 2009 and 2019. Employing a phenomenological epistemology, a qualitative methodology was adopted to explore key stakeholder’s lived experience of the Irish government’s approach to food tourism, identifying the primary drivers and key moments during the ten-year period. Extant literature was reviewed and critically evaluated. Using purposive sampling, and employing an emic posture, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior governmental and tourism industry figures until saturation occurred. The findings highlight the influence that key policy makers, the formation of networks, clusters, and the role social entrepreneurs …

The Impact Of Early Social Factors On Trajectories Of Internalizing Behavior Problems Within Maltreated Foster Care Youth, Ethan Michael Paschall
The Impact Of Early Social Factors On Trajectories Of Internalizing Behavior Problems Within Maltreated Foster Care Youth, Ethan Michael Paschall
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Children who experience maltreatment are at an increased risk for developing internalizing problems. Little is known about long-term symptom trajectories of children placed in foster care following maltreatment. This study used contemporary growth mixture modeling to assess symptom trajectories of 322 youth from the Consortium for Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect Southwest site placed in foster care due to maltreatment. Internalizing symptom trajectories were assessed using Child Behavior Checklist caregiver reports. This study examined the relationship between early social factors (i.e., social support, unpopularity, aggression, cognitive ability, trauma exposure) and trajectories of future internalizing symptoms. Results indicate a …

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
International students who move to the United States to study can experience both positive and negative challenges during the process of achieving their educational goals at the higher educational institutions they are enrolled in. This study explored how academic experiences of international students from different racial/or ethnic groups may or may not differ from each other. For this qualitative study, fourteen international graduate students of diverse backgrounds enrolled in the Winter and/or Summer 2018 semesters at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) were interviewed. The results of this study show that there are differences as well as similarities in the academic experiences …
Communication Of Sexual Information From Child To Parent, Andrew Armbruster
Communication Of Sexual Information From Child To Parent, Andrew Armbruster
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Communication of sexual information from child to parent is an area of communication that remains understudied. During the winter of 2018, a researcher conducted in-depth retrospective interviews with emerging adults from the ages of 18 to 22 to determine what adolescents share with their parents about their sexual beliefs and experiences. Communication privacy management theory was used as a framework for analyzing how and why adolescents shared sexual information and beliefs with their parents. The researcher found a better understanding of the process a child goes through when deciding if they should disclose their sexual beliefs and experiences with their …
Separate But Equal? A Look At Michigan Public School Districts, Travis Michalak
Separate But Equal? A Look At Michigan Public School Districts, Travis Michalak
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that schools that are separate are inherently unequal and that the desegregation of schools should take effect with “all deliberate speed.” Decades later, there are still schools whose student bodies are comprised of over 90% minority students. The following study aimed to understand the relationship between minority segregated schools and their graduation rates, as well as the relationship between student poverty rates and the racial composition of schools and the resulting effect these variables have on school funding. Using data collected from the Michigan School database, this study …

Instructional Communication In Preservice Education: Rapport, Conflict, And Classroom Management, Vanessa Callanan
Instructional Communication In Preservice Education: Rapport, Conflict, And Classroom Management, Vanessa Callanan
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines communication as instructional classroom practice and considers its increased inclusion in teacher preparation programs. While widely recognized as an important aspect of most university degree programs, communication pedagogy is often overlooked in schools of education curricula. Data collected from six current teachers suggest that the teachers demonstrated a value for instructional communication in three distinct ways that can all be attributed to their interaction with their students and classrooms. The teachers in this study demonstrated this through their building of rapport with their students, their strategies for both avoiding and resolving conflict within the classroom, and their …
