Rethinking Facebook, Elaine M. Lasda
Rethinking Facebook, Elaine M. Lasda
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
This two-phase study began as an exploration of Facebook usage at academic libraries and resulted in the discovery of the broader implications for social media management. In Phase One of this study, the authors looked at the Facebook pages of a sampling of academic libraries to determine the combination of time, resources, and planning that would lead to success on Facebook. To assess this, they took a mixed-method approach that compared the results of a survey of page administrators with data pulled from the library’s Facebook pages to see what insight could be gleaned. Phase Two of this study looks …

Globalizing Library Instruction: Engaging Students At International Branch Campuses, Janet H. Clarke, Laura Costello, Claudia Mcgivney
Library Faculty Publications
Today’s academic libraries must be able to communicate efficiently the depth of their resources to all campus communities, and Stony Brook University Libraries have worked to apply instructional methods to a broad spectrum of users. Our library has been using emerging technology, open access resources, and innovative teaching methods to engage with our local and global student and faculty community. Using our campus in South Korea as an example, we will highlight a number of strategies developed for delivering equitable information instruction sessions to our international students at satellite campuses across the world. The current era in American academic libraries …
Intercultural Humility In Social Work Education, Bibiana Koh, Anthony A. Bibus Iii
Intercultural Humility In Social Work Education, Bibiana Koh, Anthony A. Bibus Iii
Faculty Authored Articles
This conceptual study draws from social work, education, psychology, and moral philosophy (i.e., virtue and Confucian ethics) to inform our conceptual definition of intercultural humility (ICH) with five interrelated features. Starting with cultural humility in the context of the Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) for Baccalaureate and Master’s Social Work Programs of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE, 2015), we examined conceptualizations of humility and cultural humility as virtues required for ethical social work practice. Implications for social work education are discussed by outlining rationales and strategies for developing each ICH feature.
The Impact Of Youth Peer Advocates: An Early Look At Findings, Darren Cosgrove, Thomas M. Laporte, Margaret Gullick
The Impact Of Youth Peer Advocates: An Early Look At Findings, Darren Cosgrove, Thomas M. Laporte, Margaret Gullick
Behavioral Health Services Publications
The incorporation of peer support in the treatment process for individuals experiencing mental health challenges has been increasing over recent decades (Campbell, 2005). Adults with mental health conditions have pursued roles as facilitators in recovery-based work (Mead, Hilton & Curtis, 2001), and attained roles as peer support providers in diverse settings (Chinman et al., 2008; Gopalan, Lee, Harris, Acri, & Munson, 2017). More recently, youth have also filled critical roles as peer support providers, as young people with mental health challenges may relate better to another young person with lived mental health experience.

Background: Medically unexplained syndromes (MUS) are both prevalent and disabling. While illness beliefs and behaviors are thought to maintain MUS-related disability, little is known about which specific behavioral responses to MUS are related to disability or the way in which beliefs and behaviors interact to impact functioning. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between illness beliefs and disability among patients with MUS, and assess the extent to which behaviors mediate this relationship. Methods: The study examined data from the baseline assessment of a multi-site randomized controlled trial (RCT). Participants were 248 veterans with MUS. Illness …

The Stock Cove Site: A Large Dorset Seal-Hunting Encampment On The Coast Of Southeastern Newfoundland, Christopher B. Wolff, Donald H. Holly Jr., John C. Erwin, Tatiana Nomokonova, Lindsay Swinarton
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
The Stock Cove site (CkAl-3) is a large, deeply-stratified, multi-component site located in southeastern Newfoundland. The richest strata at the site, which have yielded thousands of artifacts and multiple overlapping house features, provide evidence of a substantial Dorset presence. Earlier researchers proposed that the Stock Cove site additionally contained the Province’s only Dorset longhouse, which this paper disputes. The high frequency of sea mammal hunting implements, identified faunal remains, as well as the site’s location, all suggest that coastal and marine resources figured prominently in the Dorset’s food economy at Stock Cove. Faunal remains further suggest that the biogeography of …
Sexual Consent As Transcendence: A Phenomenological Understanding, Mark A. Levand, Nicolle Zapien
Sexual Consent As Transcendence: A Phenomenological Understanding, Mark A. Levand, Nicolle Zapien
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Consent to sex is a topic of much research, particularly with the goal of optimizing sex education for youth, college students, and military service personnel. Sex educators have tended to err on the side of clear and concise definitions of consent for ease of instruction. However, the sexual science literature has steadily shown that the navigation of consent to sexuality activity is much more nuanced, situated and contextual. When consent is conceptualized as a yes or no answer to particular sexual acts or sexual activity altogether, it overlooks the dynamic nature of how people experience consenting. This article examines consent …
Sexual Ecstasy Scale: Conceptualizations And Measurement, John Elfers, Reid Offringa
Sexual Ecstasy Scale: Conceptualizations And Measurement, John Elfers, Reid Offringa
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This article describes the development of the Sexual Ecstasy Scale, an instrument designed to measure the specific features that emerge when sexual arousal is the trigger for an ecstatic experience. Drawing from descriptions of features of sexual ecstasy in the phenomenological literature, the authors generated an initial survey of 31 items. In Study 1, the survey was completed by a wide demographic sample (N = 331). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a 4-factor solution that was replicated in Study 2 using confirmatory factor analysis with an independent sample (N = 331) that showed strong fit indices. Internal consistency for the overall …
Meaning-Making Among Intentionally Childless Women, Christine Brooks
Meaning-Making Among Intentionally Childless Women, Christine Brooks
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This paper is a summary of a qualitative research project that focused upon meaningmaking processes as described by intentionally childless women. A grounded theory exploration, it involved semi-structured interviews with 30 cisgendered women aged 27–61 who chose childlessness early in life. Based on principles inherent to social constructivism and feminist theories, the subjective voices of the participants were analyzed as normative expressions of female identity. The main category that accompanied intentional childlessness was a sense of freedom. In addition, two additional thematic categories focused on ways the women view their contributions to their communities and experience belonging and a sense …
Divine Kink: A Consideration Of The Evidence For Bdsm As Spiritual Ritual, Sam E. Greenberg
Divine Kink: A Consideration Of The Evidence For Bdsm As Spiritual Ritual, Sam E. Greenberg
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This paper reviews the limited empirical research supporting BDSM as a spiritual ritual that enables distinct altered states of consciousness. It expands upon Sagarin, Lee, and Klement’s (2015) preliminary comparison of BDSM to extreme ritual by suggesting that BDSM bears in common with spiritual ritual elements of pain or ordeal, spiritual meaning, and transformative potential. An increasing interest in BDSM in the West is considered in light of the spiritual and ritual roles BDSM fulfills for many practitioners. The relevance of BDSM to transpersonal psychology is discussed and BDSM is considered as an area for further research in transpersonal psychology.
Erotic Mindfulness: A Core Educational And Therapeutic Strategy In Somatic Sexology Practices, Marie I. Thouin-Savard
Erotic Mindfulness: A Core Educational And Therapeutic Strategy In Somatic Sexology Practices, Marie I. Thouin-Savard
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
Somatic sexology modalities such as sexual surrogacy, sexological bodywork, masturbation coaching, and orgasmic meditation have shown significant potential for helping individuals transcend sexual difficulties and grow into more fulfilling erotic lives. The use of an embodied state of consciousness similar to neo-traditional forms of mindfulness meditation may be a common factor contributing to therapeutic efficacy in a variety of somatic sexology methods. Comparing the structure of three somatic sexology modalities—sexual surrogacy, masturbation coaching, and orgasmic meditation—with recent evidence supporting the efficacy of neo-traditional mindfulness practices in promoting women’s sexual wellbeing reveals that somatic sexology practitioners use embodied mindfulness as a …
