The Micro-Foundations Of An Open Economy Money Demand: An Application To Central And Eastern European Countries, Claudiu T. Albulescu, Dominique Pepin, Stephen M. Miller

Molasky Family Department of Economics and Real Estate Faculty Research

This paper investigates the effect of currency substitution between the currencies of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries and the euro on CEE money demand functions. In addition, we develop a model with microeconomic foundations, which identifies the difference between currency substitution and money demand sensitivity to exchange rate variations. More precisely, we posit that currency substitution relates to the money demand sensitivity to interest rate spreads between CEE countries and the euro area. Moreover, we show how the exchange rate affects money demand absent a currency substitution effect. This model applies to any country in which an international currency …

Are The Outcomes Of Creativity Always Positive?, Roni Reiter-Palmon Jan 2019

Are The Outcomes Of Creativity Always Positive?, Roni Reiter-Palmon

Psychology Faculty Publications

The paper by Kaufman (2018) calls for more research on the consequences of creativity. While we typically think about the positive consequences of creativity, it is important to understand that creativity can have negative, both intended and unintended consequences. In this commentary, I review the nascent literature on negative and malevolent creativity, and specifically discuss concerns regarding measurement. Having a consistent way to evaluate and measure negative creativity is critical to our understanding and future research.

Schedule Creep: In Search Of An Uncongested Baseline Block Time By Examining Scheduled Flight Block Times Worldwide 1986–2016, Terence P. C. Fan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Based on a stratified random sampling of airlines’ schedules for 200 heavily travelled directional nonstop airport pairs, this paper examines systematically how scheduled block times in non-stop flights have changed from 1986 to 2016. Three econometric analyses, by way of a 10th percentile quantile regression, 15th percentile quantile regression and ordinary least-squares regression, show that after accounting for the effects of air traffic growth, airport-specific congestion, flight delays, number of seat per flight, aircraft type, flight heading, airport slot policy, other airport-specific anomalies, airline-specific policies and changes in crude oil price, scheduled block times have been growing at a pace …

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Child Mortality: Evidence From Pakistan Demographic And Health Survey, Rana Ejaz Ali Khan, Khadija Malik Bari, Muhammad Ali Raza Jan 2019

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Child Mortality: Evidence From Pakistan Demographic And Health Survey, Rana Ejaz Ali Khan, Khadija Malik Bari, Muhammad Ali Raza

Business Review

This paper attempts to highlight socioeconomic determinants of child mortality in Pakistan. Binary logistic regression is applied to 7297 observations from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2012-13. The results reveal that probability of child mortality decreases with greater birth-interval, child’s large size at birth, more family members, mother’s education, mother’s ownership of assets and mother’s decision-making at the household level. Policy makers can work to improve mothers’ characteristics such as fertility behavior, education, empowerment and decision-making at the household level, to reduce child mortality.

Testing Asset Pricing Models On The Pakistan Stock Exchange, Kiran Lohano, Muhammad Kashif Jan 2019

Testing Asset Pricing Models On The Pakistan Stock Exchange, Kiran Lohano, Muhammad Kashif

Business Review

This study investigates the performance of CAPM, three-factor and five-factor asset pricing models on the Pakistan Stock Exchange using monthly data of 896 companies from November 2000 to December 2016. The results from the time-series approach show that the three-factor model performs relatively better than the CAPM and the five-factor model, whereas the cross-sectional approach establishes the superiority of the five-factor model. It can thus be concluded that it is important to incorporate factors, such as size, value, profitability and investment when predicting returns on securities in the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

Inflation Targeting And Exchange Rate Pass Through In Pakistan: Markov Switching Approach, Safia Minhaj, Muhammad Nishat

Business Review

This study uses Markov switching model to empirically track the existence of exchange rate pass through and inflation trends in Pakistan from 1982 to 2016. The results reveal a direct relationship between pass through and inflation. Furthermore, interest rate and trade variables have a significant impact on inflation. According to the smoothed probabilities, switches between regimes were sudden and sporadic till 1990, after which long spells were observed during high and low inflation regimes.

Work–Family Conflict And Counterproductive Work Behaviors: Moderating Role Of Regulatory Focus And Mediating Role Of Affect, T. T. (Rajan) Selvarajan, Barjinder Singh, Peggy A. Cloninger, Kaumudi Misra Jan 2019

Work–Family Conflict And Counterproductive Work Behaviors: Moderating Role Of Regulatory Focus And Mediating Role Of Affect, T. T. (Rajan) Selvarajan, Barjinder Singh, Peggy A. Cloninger, Kaumudi Misra

Organization Management Journal

Evidence suggests work–family conflict can lead to numerous negative consequences in the workplace, including behaviors detrimental to the organization and its members, such as counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs). Yet relatively little research has addressed the relationship between work–family conflict and CWBs. This study builds on the structural model of stress and regulatory focus theory to addresses this major gap in the literature. Our model proposes that negative affect and self-regulation can help us understand how and why work–family conflict may be related to CWBs. We hypothesize that work–family conflict is positively related to negative affect, which in turn is positively …

A Study Of The Hierarchical Culture Gaps Within Unionized Utilities Companies, Levi R. G. Nieminen, Benjamin Biermeier-Hanson, Adam Roebuck, Daniel R. Denison

Organization Management Journal

The purpose of this study was to measure the culture gaps between hierarchical subgroups within unionized utilities companies. We conducted a mixed methods study. Using archival survey data, we compared hierarchically-defined subgroups’ perceptions of performance-linked culture traits within five unionized utilities companies. We later conducted interviews and focus groups, followed by qualitative coding and analysis. As compared to non-union employees, union employees viewed their companies as substantially less involving, consistent, adaptable, and clear about purpose and direction. Our qualitative analysis highlighted two prior management decisions as illustrative of the contrast between high and low levels of union involvement and clarity. …

2015 - Preliminary Engineering Design Report For Control Of Non-Winter Drainage At Carr Lake

Monterey County Water Resources Agency Engineering Reports

Landowners at Carr Lake reported increasing issues with proper drainage of the agricultural fields that made up the vast majority of the former lake bed. The primary driver of the study was the recognition that a more complete understanding of the site topography and hydrology is necessary, both to frame the pertinent issues and to identify any measures that may be appropriate to enhance drainage in the ditch system. Therefore the project work plan included two main fieldwork components, topographic survey and hydrologic monitoring. The fieldwork was followed up by data post processing, mapping, and associated supporting analyses.

Work was …
