The Effect Of The 2016 Presidential Election On Sikh-Americans’ Perceptions Of Safety In Texas, Jasleen Dhillon Feb 2019

The Effect Of The 2016 Presidential Election On Sikh-Americans’ Perceptions Of Safety In Texas, Jasleen Dhillon

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, members of the Sikh-American community have been the subjects of random hate crimes in the United States because of their distinct identity, namely the turban. During and after the 2016 presidential election, many minority groups, including Sikh-Americans, were concerned over the rhetoric the then-candidate Donald Trump had been using. The focus of this research project was to study if the rhetoric used during the presidential campaign had any effect on how Sikh-Americans perceived their safety in a politically conservative state like Texas. The methods used to collect data were both …

An Examination Of The Severity Of Aquatic Incidents, Lyndsey K. Lanagan-Leitzel Feb 2019

An Examination Of The Severity Of Aquatic Incidents, Lyndsey K. Lanagan-Leitzel

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Lanagan-Leitzel (2012) found that lifeguards do not consistently report incidents when free-viewing aquatic scenes and miss some incidents that should be considered critical. This could have been because they did not know what incidents were critical to monitor or because they were busy monitoring other incidents. In the current study, lifeguards and non-lifeguards were presented with video clips of isolated incidents and rated the severity of each on a scale of 0 – 7. The lifeguards reported greater mean and maximum incident severity than non-lifeguards. Further analyses of lifeguard responses revealed that severity ratings were only moderately correlated to the …

On March 19, 1812, during the Spanish War of Independence (1808−14), the Cortes of Cádiz promulgated the Constitution of the Spanish Monarchy. The liberal in character Constitution was the first constitution in Spain that established national sovereignty and the division of powers. King Fernando VII reigned for a short period in 1808, before being overthrown by Napoleon. In 1813, Fernando regained the throne at the conclusion of the war of independence. Fernando abolished the Constitution restoring absolute monarchical power. Fernando exercised this power until the end of his reign in 1833, except for the liberal three-year period of 1820 to …

Miscellaneous Publications – Spanish

The Constitution of the Spanish monarchy was also known as Spanish Constitution of 1812 or Constitution of Cadiz was in Cádiz on March 19, 1812. It has been granted great historical importance because it is the first Spanish Constitution. It remained officially in force for two years when it was repealed on May 4, 1814, although as late as 1820, allegiance to the 1812 Spanish Constitution was still being demanded. Questioning The Morality Of Raising Neanderthal, Rachel Robinson-Greene Feb 2019

Questioning The Morality Of Raising Neanderthal, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In 2013, Harvard professor George Church raised the possibility that an “extremely adventurous female human” might one day serve as a surrogate mother to a cloned Neanderthal child. In the recent bestseller Sapiens, author and historian Yuval Noah Harari discusses the possibility of resurrecting Neanderthal, reintroducing the idea into popular discussion. Bringing Neanderthal back to life would be an instance of what many scientists call de-extinction. The idea that something like this may be possible is certainly both intriguing and entertaining. But, to paraphrase Jurassic Park, when it comes to using emerging technology in this way, are people spending so …

Sexual Activity And Attitudes As Predictors Of Sexual Satisfaction During Pregnancy: A Multi-Level Model Describing The Sexuality Of Couples In The First 12 Weeks, Sofia Jawed-Wessel, Jonathan Santo, Jay A. Irwin

Psychology Faculty Publications

The sexual satisfaction of couples during pregnancy is an under-researched area of study. Several limitations exist within the current literature, including a lack of inquiry into attitudes about sex during pregnancy, analysis of the relationship between sexual satisfaction and sexual behaviors, and analysis of dyadic interactions within the couple. The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationships between attitudes toward having sex during pregnancy, various sexual behaviors, and sexual satisfaction among expectant couples via multilevel structural equation modeling. Recruitment focused on mixed-gender monogamous couples where the pregnant individual was between 8 and 12 weeks of gestation, and …

Using Cognitive Mapping To Longitudinally Examine Political Brand Associations, Ewan Macdonald, Roger Sherlock, John Hogan

Articles

This paper uses cognitive mapping techniques to understand how brand associations, an important aspect of political brand equity are formed, differ, and change, from the perspective of citizens, across the four largest Irish political parties between 2013 and 2016. The paper focuses in particular upon the strength, favourability and uniqueness of these brand associations. The results constitute a first attempt to longitudinally explore changing political brand associations through cognitive mapping techniques, using data generated with the participation of hundreds of citizens. Our findings suggest that this approach can contribute to our understanding of how and why political brand associations change …

Beyond The Campus: Heroism As A Case Study For Extending Researchers' Influence Through K-12 Lesson Plans, Ari Kohen, Andre Solo

Heroism Science

As a result of their training, college professors are subject matter experts who have the task of conveying ideas to students and to the public at large. They accomplish this, in large measure, through their research and their teaching. In this article, we consider an important alternative way in which professors can broaden their reach by creating lesson plans for students beyond their own classrooms—at very little time investment. We use as a case study our own lesson plan on heroism, which draws on expertise in political theory and psychology, in order to demonstrate the way in which such a …
