The Evolution Of Consanguineous Marriages In The Archbishopric Of Granada, Spain (1900–1979), Juan F. Gamella, Ana MaríA NúÑEz-Negrillo Feb 2019

The Evolution Of Consanguineous Marriages In The Archbishopric Of Granada, Spain (1900–1979), Juan F. Gamella, Ana MaríA NúÑEz-Negrillo

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

In the twentieth century Spain maintained some of the highest rates of consanguineous marriage in Europe. In many regions these rates were still high in the 1950s and 1960s, but then decreased rapidly, and by the 1970s a generalized transformation in mating patterns was underway. In the following decades the marriage of persons closely related by birth became rare. Consanguinity and inbreeding have been much studied in Spain, but almost exclusively in the central and northern regions of the country. This is the first study of a whole large diocese in the southern region of Andalusia. This paper is based …

An Admixture Approach To Trihybrid Ancestry Variation In The Philippines With Implications For Forensic Anthropology, Bridget F. B. Algee-Hewitt, Cris E. Hughes, Matthew C. Go, Beatrix Dudzik

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

In this study, we investigate, for the first time from a forensic anthropological perspective, the question of mixed ancestry estimation for modern Filipinos with geographic origins in the Philippines. We derive estimates of continental ancestry using craniometrics from four sources: a new documented collection of current forensic significance from the Manila North Cemetery; the Howells cranial series representing a sample of unclaimed individuals from Manila but said largely to originate from more remote areas, with dates of death before 1940; the Hanihara sample aggregated from various locations and time periods across the Philippines; and the Hanihara series capturing various local …

Cimino, Jay H. Shubrook, Sonsoles De Lacalle, Yuchun Zhou, Vimla L. Patel

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine

BACKGROUND: Vast volumes of data, coded through hierarchical terminologies (e.g., International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision-Clinical Modification [ICD10-CM], Medical Subject Headings [MeSH]), are generated routinely in electronic health record systems and medical literature databases. Although graphic representations can help to augment human understanding of such data sets, a graph with hundreds or thousands of nodes challenges human comprehension. To improve comprehension, new tools are needed to extract the overviews of such data sets. We aim to develop a visual interactive analytic tool for filtering and summarizing large health data sets coded with hierarchical terminologies (VIADS) as an online, and publicly …

The Unbearable Lightness Of The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Accomplishment Of Diversity At An Urban Farmers Market, Sofya Aptekar Feb 2019

The Unbearable Lightness Of The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Accomplishment Of Diversity At An Urban Farmers Market, Sofya Aptekar

Publications and Research

This article provides a critique of work on urban public space that touts its potential as a haven from racial and class conflicts and inequalities. I argue that social structures and hierarchies embedded in the capitalist system and the state’s social control over the racialized poor are not suspended even in places that appear governed by civility and tolerance, such as those under Anderson’s “cosmopolitan canopy”. Durable inequality, residential segregation, nativism, and racism inevitably shape what happens in diverse public spaces. Using an ethnographic study of an urban farmers’ market in New York City, I show that appearances of everyday …

Battling Imposter Syndrome: You Persevered! Luck Has No Place Here, Julius Grayson, Lesley Mateo

First-Generation Symposium

The pressure to succeed and set yourself apart from the rest may seem overwhelming! If you identify as an underrepresented minority (URM) in higher education, the pressure intensifies when you are unable to see yourself, relate and/or identify with your college instructors or campus. Research suggests that identifying as an URM and not having visible representation of yourself in the classroom or on campus can lead to something known as Impostor Phenomenon (IP) also known as Impostor Syndrome. IP is the belief that achievement and success occur not because of performance or ability but rather because of luck. IP negatively …

Clarity In The Code Du Travail: The Plain Language Movement, French Legislative Drafting, And President Macron’S Collective Bargaining Reform, Adam Boyd

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)

Although the French Code is known as concise and elegant, the French Labor Code, or the Code du Travail, is not.1 Recent reform to the Code du Travail provides a chance to study Plain Language use in France in 2017. This Comment briefly introduces what Plain Language is, its goal of making the law easier to read, and the international movement to implement Plain Language legal reforms. The Comment then introduces a summary of the French legal system relevant to discussion of the Code du Travail, including how legislation is passed and the structure of a French statute. Next, the …
