Distancing Strategies, Exclusive Clusters And Other Ironies Of My American Peers, Mai Trinh

SURGE

Being able to study abroad is a huge privilege. I am very lucky to have been given that privilege twice. I was accepted to Gettysburg College two and a half years ago, and studied abroad in the United States. Now, I am studying abroad again in Copenhagen, Denmark with a program that connects many colleges and universities in the US. It has been a month now and I am having a good time.

But my first few weeks in Copenhagen were not the same as my first few weeks in Gettysburg. Strangely enough, it was much more uncomfortable and harder …

Putting The Blue In The Green New Deal, Jason Scorse, David Helvarg Feb 2019

Putting The Blue In The Green New Deal, Jason Scorse, David Helvarg

Working Papers

The Green New Deal (GND) is a U.S. resolution that aims to address economic inequality and global warming through a set of proposed economic stimulus projects. As nearly half of the U.S. populace lives in or near coastal areas, the GND needs to prioritize the sustainable use and preservation of the marine environment – called the “blue economy.” David Helvarg of Blue Frontier and Jason Scorse of the International Environmental Policy Program and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies suggest a series of policy and investment priorities for incorporation of the blue economy into the GND.

General Interviewer Techniques: Developing Evidence-Based Practices For Standardized Interviewing, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema, Steve M. Coombs, Rob K. Schultz, Lisa Holland, Margaret Hudson

Interviewer Workshop, 2019: Interviewers and Their Effects from a Total Survey Error Perspective

The practices of standardized interviewing developed at many research sites over many years. The version of standardization that Fowler and Mangione codified in Standardized Survey Interviewing has provided researchers a core resource to use in training and supervising standardized interviewers. In recent decades, however, the accumulation of recordings and transcripts of interviews makes it possible to re-visit the practices of standardization to describe both how respondents actually answer survey questions and how interviewers actually respond.

To update General Interviewer Training (GIT), we brought observations of interaction during interviews together with research about conversational practices from conversation analysis, psychology, and other …

Targeting Extension Programs To Opinion Leaders Guiding Genetic Modification Discussions, Alexa J. Lamm, Melissa R. Taylor, Joy N. Rumble, Jason D. Ellis

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Despite communication efforts developed to educate the public about genetic modification (GM) science designed to ensure consumers are making educated purchasing decisions, most consumers do not seek out information about GM science and make emotional purchasing decisions. GM supporters and opponents can also be very vocal about their opinions, having an impact on those within their social realms of influence. Using opinion leadership theory, this study sought to identify GM opinion leaders within the U.S. who consider themselves to be outspoken and a source of information for GM science. An online survey was deployed with the purpose of identifying GM …

How An Online Education Module Influences Attitudes Toward Relationship Education: A Randomized Experiment, Daniel S. Hubler, Brandon K. Burr Feb 2019

How An Online Education Module Influences Attitudes Toward Relationship Education: A Randomized Experiment, Daniel S. Hubler, Brandon K. Burr

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Growing evidence suggests that many people do not see the differences between relationship education (RE) and couples therapy (CT). In fact, many lack information regarding the details and processes included in both RE and CT. If the differences are not understood, fewer people may be inclined to attend RE. RE has experienced various recruitment challenges over the years. The Theory of Planned Behavior illustrates how attitudes and intentionality are linked. If participants gain knowledge about a service, their attitudes about that service and intentions to participate change. For this study, an online module was created to provide information on the …

Burnout And Extension Educators: Where We Are And Implications For Future Research, Mia B. Russell, Prince A. Attoh, Tyrone Chase, Tao Gong, Jinhee Kim, Girvin L. Liggans

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Burnout is identified as an individual work-related outcome that plagues educators within Cooperative Extension. Extension educators are particularly susceptible to burnout due to the unique set of demands and stressors they face, including geographic isolation, long work hours, prolonged driving times, and emotionally demanding interactions with clients, peers, local government, and administration. This review examines the literature relevant to Extension and burnout, discusses predictors and outcomes of burnout, and examines theories that have been used to investigate burnout. While studies have shed light on burnout within Extension from discipline and individual state perspectives, this review identifies the need for an …

Child Support Compliance In Fatherhood Programs: The Role Of Hope, Role Salience, And Parenting Skills, Alexander E. Chan, Francesca Adler-Baeder

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Non-resident fathers’ compliance with child support agreements is low. An estimated 50% of fathers never pay any formal support to their co-parents (Stykes, Manning, & Brown, 2013). Responsible fatherhood programs have been developed as an alternative to incarceration to provide parenting and other skills to fathers in the hopes of increasing their payment compliance. This study adds to the sparse literature on the evaluation of responsible fatherhood programs by quantitatively examining the role of hope, parenting role salience, and parenting skills in predicting changes in child support compliance attitudes. The sample was drawn from participants in community-based responsible fatherhood programs. …
