Nourishing Nordics: A Celebration Of Sustainable Foodways In Scandinavia, Shandrea Hickok

Student Research Symposium

On April 15, 2019, I will host the event “Nourishing Nordics” to explore sustainable foodways of Scandinavia. There will be tasting of local and organic foods, education about sustainable farming, Scandinavian genealogy, and musical performances. The purpose of this event will be to educate students and the public about local sustainable vendors in Cache Valley. Utah is ranked 9th worst in the nation for access to local food. We have two food desserts in our area where people are unable to access fresh products. Scandinavia, on the other hand, leads the world with its devotion to sustainability and promotion of …

The Spouse's Perspective Of Agricultural Education As A Career, Nicole Hopkins Apr 2019

The Spouse's Perspective Of Agricultural Education As A Career, Nicole Hopkins

Student Research Symposium

The national shortage of agricultural education teachers is an urgent concern because it results in less students prepared to seek careers in agriculture and other STEM disciplines. Factors including the excessive demands placed on agriculture teachers have contributed to teacher turnover. These demands often spill over into other life domains, such as the family. Since individuals in the family domain can exert an influence on career decisions of their loved ones, it is important to understand the influence of the agricultural education profession on perceptions and work-family conflict of the agriculture teacher's spouse or partner (henceforth spouse). Additionally, job satisfaction …

Effects Of Reading Poetry Versus Facts On Level Of Anxiety, Sedona Mccabe

Student Scholar Showcase

A large number of the United States’ adult population are affected by anxiety disorders, about 18.1% in any given year (Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 2018). The primary goal of the research was to study the effects of poetry on anxiety, furthermore, to test if poetry had an effect on anxiety levels and if there was a difference in the effect of poetry on anxiety levels of participants with high and low anxiety levels. Forty college-aged participants read 6 short poems and 6 interesting facts and completed a self-report of anxiety. Heart rate and skin conductance (GSR) were measured …

Gender Differences In Workplace Jealousy, Garrett Nielsen Apr 2019

Gender Differences In Workplace Jealousy, Garrett Nielsen

Student Research Symposium

Sex differences in jealousy may be a well-studied topic in regard to relationships, but there are relatively few studies on jealousy in the workplace in comparison. This study aims to address the sex differences in how jealousy affects interpersonal relations in an office environment. Recent studies have already shown that there are sex differences in what causes an employee to become jealous of a supervisor or an employer, with men having jealousy more evoked by social dominance and physical dominance and women having jealousy more evoked by social dominance and physical attractiveness, but few studies, if any, have gone to …

Response Inhibition And Reactive Balance In Older Adults, Derek England Apr 2019

Response Inhibition And Reactive Balance In Older Adults, Derek England

Student Research Symposium

Response inhibition involves stopping undesired and automatic actions allowing for behavioral flexibility. This ability is theoretically able to contribute to fall prevention, which older adults are known to have difficulty with. Although much has been learned from cognitive psychology regarding response inhibition, translation to the challenge of balance recovery is unclear. Recently a correlation has been found between performance on a standard test of response inhibition called the Stop Signal Task (SST) and a balance test that required inhibition of a reactive step in young adults. This highlights a neural mechanism for stopping action across different behavioral contexts in young …

Substitution Effect In Sport Event Attendance, Clay Moffitt Apr 2019

Substitution Effect In Sport Event Attendance, Clay Moffitt

Student Research Symposium

In USA, the professional Major League Baseball (MLB) consists of 30 teams in two leagues, the National League and the American League. According to Forbes' estimate, the overall revenue of the league is at $9.46 billion in 2017, an average of 315.33 million U.S. dollars per team, which makes teams of MLB franchises the third-most worth on average after teams of the National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) (https://www.statista.com/statistics/193637/franchise-value-of-major-league-baseball-teams-in-2010/). In addition, the league-wide revenue of MLB franchises has almost doubled over the past ten years leading to an increase in the valuation of MLB franchises. Therefore, …

Socioeconomic Influences On Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia's Counties, Mary Passley Apr 2019

Socioeconomic Influences On Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia's Counties, Mary Passley

Student Scholar Showcase

Most research on factors and causes of crime, whether property or violent crime, focuses on individuals’ behavior or their surrounding environment. In this research, I explore the idea of socioeconomic factors correlated to property crime. I conducted a retrospective design to fully explore United States Census data and crime data gathered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to discover statistically significant variables connected to property crime. Significant findings were shown by average people per house and retail sales per capita in all counties. Additional significant findings were percent employment change and percent with high school degree or higher in low …

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Saudi Arabian Women In Zoe Ferraris' Finding Nouf, Sharifa Bahri Apr 2019

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Saudi Arabian Women In Zoe Ferraris' Finding Nouf, Sharifa Bahri

Linguistics ETDs

Saudi Arabian women are often stereotyped, in Western media, not only as victims of the oppression of their male-dominant society but also as voiceless uneducated objects who are simply housewives. The aim of this paper is to challenge this representation of Saudi Arabian women by digging deeper into how these women are represented in the discourse of literature by an author from the United States. A mystery novel featuring Saudi Arabian women and their struggle inside Saudi Arabia has been chosen for Critical Discourse Analysis: Zoe Ferraris’ Finding Nouf (2009). The novel was chosen not only for its genre, location, …

Living In Gang-Controlled Neighborhoods: Impacts On Electoral And Nonelectoral Participation In El Salvador, Abby Córdova Apr 2019

Living In Gang-Controlled Neighborhoods: Impacts On Electoral And Nonelectoral Participation In El Salvador, Abby Córdova

Political Science Faculty Publications

Gangs’ territorial control affects the lives of residents in thousands of neighborhoods across Latin America, particularly in northern Central American countries. I argue that gang dominance constrains the ability of neighborhood residents to mobilize politically and consequently resist gang violence through institutionalized channels. Living in gang-controlled neighborhoods results in fewer incentives and opportunities to make political elites accountable for one’s personal safety. Even residents who have already experienced crime firsthand are discouraged from turning to politics as a strategy to change the status quo. My theoretical insights identify mechanisms through which gangs’ neighborhood control affects nonelectoral and electoral participation. To …

Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas Apr 2019

Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas

Honors College Theses

Competition from imported seafood, low product prices, increasing operation costs, and other socio-economic factors are negatively affecting coastal Georgia’s commercial fishing industry. Fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) is extensive and gives them unique perspectives into the problems the industry is facing. Their perspectives differ from those of biologists or policymakers, making them useful for implementing good management policies that not only consider the scientific knowledge of a fishery, but the human aspect as well. This thesis used conducted semi-structured and card-sorting interviews with commercial Georgia fishermen in two fishing communities to learn about the problems they face and their unique …

The aim of this presentation is to discuss the theorizing process of a Family Health Strength-Based Socio-Ecological Model of Breast Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa and the model’s meaning to family nursing practice. The major purpose of theorizing this model is to explore the social determinants of breast cancer within and external to the family system. The model is developed based on key realities inductively generated from integrated and empirical evidence on breast cancer in the region. Understanding the social contexts of health from this multilevel holistic systems approach offers nurses opportunities to prioritize research and interventions in disease prevention and …

The Essence Of The Teaching/Learning Process: An Exploration Of The Perspectives And Lived Experiences Of University Spanish Language Teaching Assistants, Sarah Schulman Apr 2019

The Essence Of The Teaching/Learning Process: An Exploration Of The Perspectives And Lived Experiences Of University Spanish Language Teaching Assistants, Sarah Schulman

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

U.S. schools are emblematic of the increasingly linguistic and cultural diversity present in this country. Despite this well-documented shift, U.S. foreign language teacher education programs have yet to align learning outcomes with the cognitive and affective needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students. Providing educators with opportunities to learn about and prepare for the needs of these students is essential, but this alone will not address the essence of the underlying problem. If foreign language teacher education programs are to evolve, a deeper understanding of the teaching/learning process is critical.

In response to this need, this qualitative study explored how …

The Cold War And The Discipline Of Negotiation, Bazil Cunningham Apr 2019

The Cold War And The Discipline Of Negotiation, Bazil Cunningham

Global Tides

The Cold War period is perhaps one of the most tumultuous periods in modern history apart from the calamity of World War I and World War II. The juxtaposition of two world superpowers and the proliferation of nuclear arms resulted in extreme tension, uncertainty, and fear during the Cold War era. Although nuclear warfare was averted, experts all unanimously agree that the world barely escaped unscathed. This paper will provide detail surrounding the history of the Cold World Era, an in-depth discussion regarding the application of Negotiation theory to this conflict, and any conclusions that can be drawn. The synthesis …

Beyond The Rhetoric Of Homeschool Socialization An Analysis Of The Parental Perspective, Lavonda A. Evans Apr 2019

Beyond The Rhetoric Of Homeschool Socialization An Analysis Of The Parental Perspective, Lavonda A. Evans

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the current literature regarding homeschool families. Past research has covered many aspects of the homeschool movement: reasons why parents choose to homeschool, the benefits of homeschooling, academic achievement in homeschool, and more. However, there is a lack of scholarly work on the parental perspective of homeschooled children’s socialization skills. Twelve parents of homeschooled children volunteered for telephone interviews and were asked to provide their perception of their child’s socialization levels. The demographic data of the participants in this study is consistent with previous research. An analysis of this study shows evidence that homeschooling parents are active in …

Academic Libraries, Government Information, And The Persistent Problem Of Jargon, Jennifer P. Kirk, Alex J. Sundt, Teagan Eastman Apr 2019

Academic Libraries, Government Information, And The Persistent Problem Of Jargon, Jennifer P. Kirk, Alex J. Sundt, Teagan Eastman

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

The shift to born-digital and digitized materials has ultimately increased access and convenience for users, but in many ways it has also complicated the process of finding information. While users may struggle with catalog interfaces or reading call numbers, most have a basic understanding of how to locate a physical book. But in the digital environment, users have no built-in model for what sequence of clicks or keywords will get them to the information they need. This problem is exacerbated for specialized areas like government information, where more and more data and documents are readily available online via a variety …

The Impact Of Different Data Processing Methods On Site-Specific Management Recommendation, Taro Mieno, Joe D. Luck, Zhengzheng Gao Apr 2019

The Impact Of Different Data Processing Methods On Site-Specific Management Recommendation, Taro Mieno, Joe D. Luck, Zhengzheng Gao

Cornhusker Economics

Precision agriculture has the potential to enhance farming profitability substantially via site-specific management of fields. One of the promising ways of generating such profitability-enhancing input is to a use recommendation map is on-farm randomized trials. The process of generating an input (say nitrogen) using a recommendation map typically involves the following steps:

1. Design and implement randomized input use trial

2. Collect yield data along with other field characteristics (Slope, Electrical Conductivity, and Organic Matter)

3. Process the data for statistical analysis

4. Conduct regression analysis to estimate production function (how the input affect crop yield)

5. For each of …
