The Impact Of A Training Intervention With Spatial Occlusion Goggles On Controlling And Passing A Football, Alan Dunton, Edward K. Coughlan Phd, Cian O' Neill Phd
Articles
Introduction: The current study analysed the impact of spatial occlusion training on control and pass accuracy in football. Occlusion was achieved using goggles that removed the sight of the lower limbs and football as it was projected towards the participants.
Methods: Fifteen skilled male football players were randomly assigned to one of three groups; Occlusion, Practice and Control. Participants were required to control a projected football, before passing it to one of two designated targets, while concurrently identifying a series of randomly generated numbers. Pass direction was determined by a directional arrow that accompanied each number, which coincided with the …
Oral Argument Tactics On The Supreme Court Bench: A Comparative Analysis Of Verbal Tools Used By Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, And Gorsuch, Corinne Cichowicz
Oral Argument Tactics On The Supreme Court Bench: A Comparative Analysis Of Verbal Tools Used By Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, And Gorsuch, Corinne Cichowicz
Politics Honors Papers
Oral argument scholars like Adam Feldman have categorized the Supreme Court justices’ behavior during oral argument using the approach-based method, labeling each as one-sided, even-handed, or restrained. This approach is too narrowly constructed. Scholars sometimes categorize justices in terms of the tools they use, which include questions, hypotheticals, declarations, interruptions, tone of voice, and silence (Feldman 2018a). Neither of these methods alone produce a nuanced analysis of each justice’s actions during an individual case or across a Term. As the Court’s composition and dynamics are continuously changing, scholarship on oral argument needs to adapt to …

The Patient-Physician Relationship: Overcoming Language And Cultural Barriers, Corrilynn Lynch
Senior Honors Theses
The patient-physician relationship governs the field of medicine, forming the basis for all relationships, interactions, and procedures in medicine. The degree to which a patient trusts his physician and thus is willing to be receptive to medical advice and adhere to assigned treatment is dependent on the quality of his relationship with his physician. The method of relationship chosen will dictate how the patient feels he is perceived and thus to what extend he will participate in his healthcare. A patient-centered approach to medicine will increase this confidence and lead to improved clinical results. Additionally, the rise of physician burnout …

“Doing My Own Thing”: How First-Generation College Students Communicate Their College Experience With Their Parents, Cristina Cirelli
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The purpose of this qualitative study was to achieve an in-depth understanding of how first-generation college students communicate their college experience with their parents. This phenomenological study recruited participants through convenience sampling from a private university located in Northern California. Six participants were each interviewed for 30-minutes in a neutral setting and a semi-structured interview guide was used to ask open-ended questions about their experience. The results found that students prioritize what they want to discuss with their parents, and the more interest parents express, the more likely the students are to provide detailed information about their experience. However, when …

Body image, the opinion someone has of their own body, is an important construct to study as a poor body image is associated with many aspects of general well-being, such as poor quality of life (Duarte, Ferreira, Trindade, & Pinto-Gouveia, 2015; Griffiths et al., 2017), poor self-esteem (Furnham, Badmin & Sneade), and eating disorders (Polivy & Herman, 2002). Researchers have sought to identify factors predictive of the development body image in an effort to provide evidence-based programs to promote a healthy body image. Some factors associated with body image are social media usage, personality, and stress. In the present study …

The current study investigates the relationship between color and time perception. Prior research suggests that red stimuli create a greater temporal distortion than other colors, and that the direction of the distortion (i.e. underestimation or overestimation) varies with context. Research also shows that red stimuli tend to have negative effects on performance in academic contexts, perhaps due to the psychological and physiological arousal. This study specifically investigates the effect of arousal on this relationship, being the first to investigate the relationship between red, time perception, arousal, and task performance on a concurrent task …
“Paying” The Way For A Better Bart Future: A Call For Better Enforcement Of Fare Evasion Policies And Strategic Planning At Bart, Ethan S. Tan
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system has undoubtedly shaped the way the San Francisco Bay Area operates today. BART has molded itself to becoming a popular form of transportation for citizens of the area. However, numerous problems have arisen in recent years in regard to the overall “healthiness” of the BART system with its ex-aging fleet of trains, undertrained staff, lack of BART Police presence, rampant illegal drug use, etc. which has made BART unpopular with riders. The root cause of these problems through, is the lost revenue through “stolen” rides. At any one of BART’s 48 stations in …
Attitudes And Perspectives Towards Undocumented Immigration In The United States, Nicole Morgan
Attitudes And Perspectives Towards Undocumented Immigration In The United States, Nicole Morgan
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
Undocumented immigration has been a historically controversial political topic in the United States and under the Trump Administration. This study aims to look at attitudes towards immigration in the context of whether perception is related to ethnicity or rests on moral belief. It is hypothesized that individuals who score more conservative on the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) are more likely to reflect more anti-immigration beliefs than individuals who score more liberal. It is expected that individuals who have read the Mexican vignette will reflect more anti-immigration beliefs than individuals who have read the Swedish vignette or ethnically ambiguous vignette.

Modernizing the “Hermit Kingdom”:
Bridging the Cultural and Economic Gap through Soft Power Diplomacy
Following the Korean War, the Republic of Korea embraced modernization and rose as an economic power while its Northern counterpart employed isolationist policies and acquired the name “Hermit Kingdom.” In recent years, however, the “Hermit Kingdom” is exhibiting potential for change in under the Kim Jong-Un regime. In the wake of continued economic strife, shifting East Asian political dynamics, and insecure power consolidation, Kim appeared in the international scene with a different attitude: eagerness for dialogue. Such change in Pyongyang’s political stance engenders renewed hope for …
Disillusioning The Illusion Of Choice: A Rogerian Approach On Electoral College Reform, Mei Lin
Disillusioning The Illusion Of Choice: A Rogerian Approach On Electoral College Reform, Mei Lin
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The Electoral College is used by the United States of America to elect the president every four years. It has been amended and updated several times; however, it remains an extremely convoluted and outdated system. Four presidencies were the product of incongruent elections –– the candidate won the electoral college but lost the popular vote –– and each of these presidencies resulted in immense consequences. Reforming the current electoral college will be difficult, but it is extremely vital and necessary. The American election system must be restructured so that it may fairly and adequately represent the voices of its citizens.

Silenced Voices: Remedying The Historical Suppression Of Felons And The Black Vote, Isabel Tayag
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The disenfranchisement of felons in the United States evolved from a historical precedent brought to the Americas during colonization. Our country adopted the political philosophy that shaped criminal voting laws around the country—criminals are unable to govern themselves and therefore unable to govern a country; their participation in our government would be danger to the purity of the ballot box. With rising racial tensions after Reconstruction, preserving the purity of the ballot box became a preservation of the white vote. This paper argues that felon disenfranchisement became a tool to further suppress African American after poll taxes, literacy tests, and …

My analysis demonstrates a critical discourse analysis by taking a closer look at a textual analysis of two videos of two very different Youtube beauty influencers. My main goal was to find main themes that could potentially correspond with the level of success that these two influencers have reached. My findings connect with my literature review as we know that formulaic expressions and constructing an identity are two very important mechanics that play into the behind the scenes blueprint of how a makeup tutorial usually looks. With my two main themes being presentation of self and self promotion, my themes …

Blind Devotion To Nuclear Deterrence: Our Ancestors Left A Legacy Of Magnificent Cathedrals While We’Ll Leave Behind Nuclear Weapons, Erika Simpson
Political Science Publications
The article critiques the global obsession with nuclear deterrence, contrasting it sharply with the legacy of cultural and humanitarian achievements like the rebuilding of Notre Dame Cathedral. She highlights staggering global expenditures on nuclear weapons, emphasizing their astronomical costs and the inherent risks they pose to global security and environmental stability. Simpson argues against the rationale that nuclear weapons prevent conventional wars, suggesting instead that they endanger humanity through their potential for catastrophic misuse or accidental deployment. She questions the wisdom of placing nuclear authority solely in the hands of leaders like Trump, Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong-Un, emphasizing …

Where Have All The Good Tweets Gone? An Examination Of The Information Policies At Play In Twitter Archiving, Georgia Westbrook
School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship
In 2010, the Library of Congress started archiving every public Tweet after receiving a “starter” archive of Tweets from the first four years of Twitter’s existence (2006- 2010); however, the Library could not keep up with the volume of Tweets being produced, so it halted the program at the beginning of 2018.
With changes in data harvesting and mining technologies, the ultimate goal of the project — archiving every Tweet — may be realized in the near future. As a result, it is necessary to examine the policies in place, alongside the issues which informed them, and those policies which …

Missing The 'B' In Lgbtq+, Jenna C. Haddock
Undergraduate Research Symposium
With the emergence of the awareness of the LGBTQ+ community, there has been more research done with individuals who identify as such. However, an analysis of articles claiming to utilize and/or involve LGBTQ+ individuals has shown that a vast majority of this research lacks the objective inclusion of individuals deriving from populations specific to each orientation, especially bisexuality. This review focuses on the exclusion of bisexual individuals within scientific articles claiming to involve LGBTQ+ populations. Specifically, although some statistical results are shown for gay and lesbian populations, experimental data derived from individuals who identify as bisexual are either not specified …

With the growing trends of international migration, the literature looking at the economic impact of migrants has also expanded, focusing on both the perspectives of the host and the origin countries in regard to various aspects such as labor force growth, GDP growth, and poverty rates. In the specific literature investigating the impact of migrants on origin countries, FDI is a key factor that cannot be overlooked, as it can play an essential role in the economic development of origin countries. Studies in this area have hypothesized that migrants’ impact on FDI is positive, since the information about the origin …

Impact Of Female Labor Participation In African Countries, Emmanuel N. Obodoechine
Impact Of Female Labor Participation In African Countries, Emmanuel N. Obodoechine
Honors College Theses
Females are overlooked for employment opportunities either due to stereotypes or misleading views on their productivity and importance to the workplace. Female participation in the labor market has been shown to positively impact economic growth. Highlighting the significant impact of females in the labor force is an incentive for the local government and private sector to actively engage in policies and practices that increase female participation. Given the importance of targeting females, this paper analyzes female labor participation impact on economic growth for 21 African countries between 1991 and 2017. Results show that a 10 percent increase in female labor …
The Diversionary Use Of Media Within The Land Dispute Between Chile And Bolivia, Rebecca Restani
The Diversionary Use Of Media Within The Land Dispute Between Chile And Bolivia, Rebecca Restani
Honors Theses
The land dispute between Bolivia and Chile has been an ongoing conflict that dates back to British decolonization. The War of the Pacific, which ended in 1904 and allowed Chilean sovereignty over land that was formerly Bolivia’s remains the root of the problem, as it rendered Bolivia a landlocked nation. In 2013 Bolivia filed a case with the International Court of Justice demanding negotiations of access to the Pacific Ocean. Within this land dispute, I analyzed the use of Twitter as a method of diversionary politics, which has been largely speculated over the years, that when presidential approval ratings are …
