Teen Dating Violence Victimization And School Outcomes: The Mediating Role Of Health-Related Behaviors, Bernadette K. Ombayo
Teen Dating Violence Victimization And School Outcomes: The Mediating Role Of Health-Related Behaviors, Bernadette K. Ombayo
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
TDV is a significant social problem that has adverse effects on teens’ health-related behaviors and academic achievement. Several studies have examined the association between TDV and health-related behaviors, and TDV and school outcomes separately. However, only one qualitative study explored the relationship among TDV victimization, health-related behaviors, and school outcomes. There is a need for more studies that examine TDV victimization, health-related behaviors, and school outcomes factors interrelate among high school youth. The purpose of this study is to explore risk factors of TDV, examine the moderating effect of gender or ethnicity on the relationship between TDV victimization and school …
Women In Innovation: Challenges And Opportunities, Mengzi Jin
Women In Innovation: Challenges And Opportunities, Mengzi Jin
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Innovation and creativity are the engines of social and economic progress. What roles do women play in innovation? Emerging evidence reveals that fewer women than men enter and succeed in innovation-related fields. Tackling gender inequality at work has always been one of the grand societal challenges, however little is known about gender issues specific to innovation achievements. This dissertation attempts to explain gender gaps in the innovation and creativity context. Innovation typically involves generating multiple novel and useful ideas, selecting the most promising one for implementation, and persistently championing the idea through implementation. I theorize and unpack the gender effect …
Epidemiology Of Tuberculosis In Internationally Displaced Children Resettling In Harris County, Gabriella S. Lamb
Epidemiology Of Tuberculosis In Internationally Displaced Children Resettling In Harris County, Gabriella S. Lamb
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background More than 300,000 refugees arrived in the United States (U.S.) from 2010-2015, and Texas accepts the 2nd highest number of refugees. Texas also accepts large numbers of asylees, parolees, and special immigrant visa holders. Additionally, a large proportion of trafficked persons in the U.S. live in or pass through Texas. Foreign-born children are disproportionately affected by tuberculosis (TB) and account for two-thirds of U.S. childhood TB cases. Children are at greater risk for progression from TB infection to disease and experience greater morbidity and mortality from TB disease. This makes screening for and treatment of TB infection in children …

Trends In Advanced Hiv Disease And Long-Term Outcomes Of Hivinfected Children Treated With Antiretroviral Therapy In Eastern And Southern Africa: 2003-2017, Peter James Elyanu
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Despite the over 10-years’ experience providing pediatric antiretroviral therapy(ART) and implementing different WHO guidelines, data on updated trends (after 2010) in advanced disease at ART start, and on long-term survival of children receiving ART are scarce. Without these data, the impact of recent WHO guidelines on early treatment initiation and long-term survival remains unclear. First, we examined trends in advanced disease at ART start, then described 10-year survival and investigated risk factors of early mortality in children treated with ART and lastly examined the association between rapid ART initiation and outcomes (mortality and loss to follow-up) of HIV infected. We …
Cost-Effectiveness Of Collegiate Recovery Programs, Sierra Castedo De Martell
Cost-Effectiveness Of Collegiate Recovery Programs, Sierra Castedo De Martell
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) is greater among full-time college students and young adults regardless of enrollment status than it is among any other age group (1,2). These disorders represent substantial costs to both society and to institutions of higher education, both in terms of life years lost and in lost tuition revenue. The recent proliferation of collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) – supportive communities and resource centers for students seeking to maintain SUD recovery while pursuing a higher education – have the potential to help ameliorate some of these costs. While these CRPs are typically low-cost compared to …
Diagnostic Coding Of Physical Abuse Among Patients Evaluated By A Multidisciplinary Child Protection Team In A Pediatric Level I Trauma Center, Holly Hughes Garza
Diagnostic Coding Of Physical Abuse Among Patients Evaluated By A Multidisciplinary Child Protection Team In A Pediatric Level I Trauma Center, Holly Hughes Garza
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Child abuse is a substantial public health problem. Numerous studies have used hospital discharge data coded using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th and 10th Editions, Clinical Modification (ICD-9 and ICD-10) to identify cases of physical abuse seen in hospitals. Published studies on the sensitivity and specificity of ICD coding for physical child abuse are limited using ICD-9, and non-existent with ICD-10. This study examined the accuracy of ICD coding for physical child abuse, among patients less than 18 years of age, who were evaluated due to concern for physical abuse by a Multidisciplinary Child Protection Team (MCPT) during 2012-2013 …
The Prevalence Of Practicing Safety Professionals’ Knowledge, Involvement, And Competency Associated With Workplace Wellness Programs: Gauging The Safety Profession’S Engagement With The Total Worker Health Initiative, Jennifer C. Laine
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The morbidity and mortality burden of occupational injuries and illnesses in the United States became such a public health concern that in 1970 the Occupational Safety and Health Act was signed into law. This law requires employers to provide workplaces “free from recognized hazards” and spurred the development of specific regulations along with the creation of academic and professional training programs to educate individuals about the safety sciences and careers in safety fields. Today there are an estimated 26,000 professionally trained and board certified safety professionals supporting workplace programs across the country, alongside numerous non-certified, but degreed, practicing safety professionals. …
Predictors Of On-Treatment Mortality Of Patients Undergoing Palliative Radiation Therapy: Improving The Quality Of End-Oflife Cancer Care, Matthew Stephen Ning
Predictors Of On-Treatment Mortality Of Patients Undergoing Palliative Radiation Therapy: Improving The Quality Of End-Oflife Cancer Care, Matthew Stephen Ning
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
PURPOSE: Excessive medical treatment at end-of-life is an indicator of poor quality care. While radiation therapy (RT) is effective for palliation, some patients die shortly after or even during treatment. Any treatment that requires terminal patients to spend significant time in the hospital setting contradicts palliative goals. This study investigates patterns of end-of-life RT to inform quality improvement initiatives.
METHODS: All patients who died within 6 months of starting RT at a single large academic cancer center between 2015 through 2018 were identified through our institutional databases on an Institutional Review Board-approved protocol. Clinical factors including age, treatment service, number …
Measuring Goal Attainment In Chronic Disease Self-Management Within Clinical And Research Contexts: Development And Initial Testing Of The Goal Attainment Outcome Measure For Stroke (Gam-S), Barbara Kimmel
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background and Aims: Self-management (SM) skills help stroke survivors achieve behavior risk factors control. Goal setting and attainment are fundamental for SM. The most salient elements of SM effectiveness and measurements are just beginning to be understood. Investigation of measurement of goal attainment of SM risk factors has been the major aim of the study. My dissertation explores research questions concerning the goal attainment measure using data collected at the Veterans hospital.
Methods and Results: Introductory Chapters 1 and 2, include the background on stroke prevention through self-management interventions and a preliminary literature review of goal attainment in the context …
Social Capital And Health Services Utilization In Msm, Edward Tsai
Social Capital And Health Services Utilization In Msm, Edward Tsai
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
While incidence of HIV has decreased overall and in most population subgroups, men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to remain at disproportional risk for new infection. In particular, MSM of color experience HIV incidence rates that continue to rise and represent the overwhelming majority of new cases each year. Evidence suggests greater risk among MSM may not be attributable primarily to individual behavioral level factors, but instead to structural and social environmental level factors such as access to health services. Access to health services represents a critical link in HIV and STI prevention, as health services provide serological …

Cybervetting: The Role Of Negative Content, Julia Hylton Whitaker
Cybervetting: The Role Of Negative Content, Julia Hylton Whitaker
Psychology Theses - Archive
Mixed support has surfaced regarding the use of online information for personnel selection (i.e., cybervetting), which commonly involves the evaluation of social media profiles. Research to date has largely focused on investigating the psychometric properties of this assessment technique, and little attention has been devoted to understanding rater judgment and decision making processes in a cybervetting evaluation. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the mechanisms by which raters use negative social media content to assess applicant suitability, through their perceptions of applicant attributes. Using an experimental design, results from this study found that negative social media content …
Self-Solicitation Of A Provisional Self: The Dark Triad And Spontaneous Self-Concept Content, Stephen M. Doerfler
Self-Solicitation Of A Provisional Self: The Dark Triad And Spontaneous Self-Concept Content, Stephen M. Doerfler
Psychology Theses - Archive
Higher levels of Dark Triad traits (Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism) are considered to be self-defeating, maladaptive, and can potentially interfere with the ability to develop a strong sense of self. Despite this, previous research has not examined the extent to which self-concept content differs for individuals in relation to levels of Dark Triad traits. The current study examined sense of self and self-concept content related to increased Dark Triad trait levels based on fundamentals of self-solicitation theory (Rhodewalt & Tragakis, 2002). Whereas most individuals develop a strong sense of self through self-verification of stable self-concepts (Swann, 1985), those with a …
The Effects Of Temporal Contraction And Temporal Dilation On Cognitive Performance, Amandeep Singh Dhaliwal
The Effects Of Temporal Contraction And Temporal Dilation On Cognitive Performance, Amandeep Singh Dhaliwal
Psychology Theses - Archive
Temporal dilation and temporal contraction are perceived as duration lasting longer or shorter than the standard time unit, respectively. Social, cognitive, and emotional context influences temporal perception such that socially stressful or cognitively demanding tasks distort the perception of time. In the present study, subjects (N = 123) first experienced a state of mindfulness, reported to cause temporal dilation (Kramer et al., 2013) and then performed a demanding cognitive task, reported to cause temporal contraction (Block et al., 2010). Subjects watched either a guided mindfulness video (experimental) or a relaxing music video (control). Subjects then estimated the duration of the …

North Richland Hills Development Process Improvement Plan, Matthew Baldwin, Katy Bower, Vy Nguyen, Gloria Rodriguez, Erik Smith, Yvonne Williams
Public Administration Capstone Reports - Archive
The development and permit approval process for the City of North Richland Hills (NRH) was explored with regard to the review process for development proposals, platting, and building permits. Currently, the city conducts a multi-departmental approach to review and approve the aforementioned, as well as other permits. NRH sought outside counsel to map out their platting and permit approval process in an effort to identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks, as well as to gather recommendations for process improvements that could be transferred to an electronic environment as they begin to implement this transition over the next 18 months. The goals and …

The Practice Of Children’S Ministry: Developing A Cohesive Vision Of Practice With Church Leaders, Shannon Clarkson Rains
The Practice Of Children’S Ministry: Developing A Cohesive Vision Of Practice With Church Leaders, Shannon Clarkson Rains
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to create a congregational workshop for church leaders that leads to the development of a cohesive vision for the practice of children’s ministry. In order to do this, I began by presenting the evolution of children’s ministry in the Churches of Christ along with the current tensions that exist between ministers and church leadership created by a lack of cohesive vision for the practice of children’s ministry. This foundational understanding of the origins of this tension supports my discussion of a vision for children’s ministry that includes attention to the spiritual formation of children—an …
Balancing The Theoretical Toolkit: A Quantitative Examination Of Social Mobility And Culture, Nathan Cole Baggett
Balancing The Theoretical Toolkit: A Quantitative Examination Of Social Mobility And Culture, Nathan Cole Baggett
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
Stratification researchers of the last four decades have contributed a multitude of information on how class-origins, culture, and social psychological factors affect class reproduction. However, scholarship has spent comparatively less effort in exploring cultural elements that can facilitate upward mobility for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. This thesis addresses this research imbalance through providing a nuanced look at cultural, social, and economic factors associated with educational mobility. Specifically, I investigate how educational aspirations offset financial constraints for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. I employ regression analyses to examine how common educational mobility is for individuals from less-educated households and then test to …
Processing L2 Scripts In Highly-Proficient Bilinguals, Ehsan Shafiee Zargar
Processing L2 Scripts In Highly-Proficient Bilinguals, Ehsan Shafiee Zargar
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation explores second language (L2) word recognition in different-script bilinguals (i.e., bilinguals whose first language (L1) is written in a different script than their L2). Previous examinations of L2 word recognition in different-script bilinguals have indicated that these bilinguals may deal with L2 orthographic similarities differently compared to L1 speakers and same-script bilinguals. Masked form priming studies testing L1 speakers (e.g., Davis & Lupker, 2006) and same-script L2 speakers (Bijeljac-Babic et al., 1997) have found evidence for a lexical competition mechanism during word recognition, through which formally-similar lexical representations compete for selection by inhibiting each other’s activation. Consistent with …
Model Minority Myth: Minority Status Intersectionality, Simone Porter
Model Minority Myth: Minority Status Intersectionality, Simone Porter
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This study investigated the priming effects of the model minority stereotype on 52 clinicians in training regarding their diagnostic accuracy of a transgender Japanese American male (female to male) compared to a cisgender Japanese American male patient with identical symptoms qualifying for persistent depressive disorder (PDD). It was hypothesized that clinicians in training would be more likely to perceive the primed transgender vignette as low functioning with more time needed for recovery compared to perceiving the cisgender vignette as high functioning with less time needed for recovery. The results showed a main effect for gender for the symptom inattention to …

Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation Of Drought Tolerance In Arkansas Cowpea Lines At Seedling Stage, Qirui Cui
Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cowpea [Vigna unguiculate (L.) Walp.] is not only a healthy, nutritious and versatile leguminous crop, it also has a relatively high adaptation to drought. Researches have shown that cowpea lines have a high tolerance to drought, and many of them can survive over 40 days under very hot and dry conditions. The cowpea (Southern pea) breeding program at the University of Arkansas (UA) has been active for over 50 years and has produced more than 1,000 advanced breeding lines. And the purpose of this study is to evaluate the drought-tolerant ability in Arkansas cowpea lines and use the drought tolerant …
