Showing And Telling: A Technique For Teaching Delivery Skills, Justin J. Rudnick Jun 2018

Showing And Telling: A Technique For Teaching Delivery Skills, Justin J. Rudnick

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

This single-class activity provides a framework for instructors to “coach” students to use various delivery skills for presentational speaking. By rotating student groups through three stations, the activity cultivates the students’ understanding of direct eye contact, hand gestures, and vocal volume and articulation. Students prepare a story to share in groups and actively practice each skill while the instructor demonstrates acceptable standards. After completing a debrief discussion, students are better equipped to practice delivery skills with a frame of reference for how those skills should be cultivated in class.

Applying The Instructional Beliefs Model To Training And Development Research And Practice, Nicholas T. Tatum, Seth S. Frei Jun 2018

Applying The Instructional Beliefs Model To Training And Development Research And Practice, Nicholas T. Tatum, Seth S. Frei

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

In 2011, Weber, Martin, and Myers introduced an innovative instructional model to more fully understand student outcomes within the classroom: the Instructional Beliefs Model (IBM). Results from this seminal article provided support to suggest that the IBM was a better predictor of student outcomes than previous models. Since its inception, this model has guided and informed subsequent instructional research (e.g., Goodboy & Frisby, 2014; Johnson & LaBelle, 2015; LaBelle, Martin, & Weber, 2013). While clearly applicable in the university classroom, the theoretical relationships outlined by the IBM offer transferability to additional instructional contexts: namely, training and development. Notably, there is …

The Media Ecology Of Etienne Gilson: Mediation In St. Augustine’S City Of God, Brian Gilchrist Jun 2018

The Media Ecology Of Etienne Gilson: Mediation In St. Augustine’S City Of God, Brian Gilchrist

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

Media ecology represents a vibrant, interdisciplinary area of research that considers the relationships among human beings, language, technology, and both real and virtual environments. The following question serves as a hermeneutic entrance for this article: how might Etienne Gilson’s approach to mediation invite further discussion about the relationship between media ecology and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition (CIT)? First, Gilson’s approach to mediation is analyzed, which explores how Neo-Thomism functions as a form of media. Second, Gilson’s analysis of St. Augustine’s City of God is explicated, which evaluates how Gilson mediated this significant religious text through CIT. Third, Gilson’s mediation of …

Family Size Decreases Conversation Orientation And Increases Conformity Orientation, Jenn Anderson, Laura Dirks, Natalie Graesser, Paige Block Jun 2018

Family Size Decreases Conversation Orientation And Increases Conformity Orientation, Jenn Anderson, Laura Dirks, Natalie Graesser, Paige Block

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

The family is a critical context for the development and maintenance of communication patterns and relationships. Family’s communication patterns are derived from two orientations: conversation and conformity. Family members also use relational maintenance strategies to sustain their relationships. Previous research has established the association between communication orientations and relational maintenance strategies, but has not explored how family size (i.e., number of siblings) may impact these variables. This study reports on results from an online survey of N = 784 participants. Our results indicate that number of siblings negatively predicted conversation orientation, but positively predicted conformity orientation. In addition, conversation orientation …

Kill The One-Shot: Using A Collaboration Rubric To Liberate The Librarian-Instructor Partnership, Nora Belzowski, Mark Robison Jun 2018

Kill The One-Shot: Using A Collaboration Rubric To Liberate The Librarian-Instructor Partnership, Nora Belzowski, Mark Robison

Library Faculty Publications

Subject faculty sometimes put information literacy into a box when they ask a librarian to give “the library talk.” On the librarian’s end, this unimaginative request translates into a traditional one-shot, often focused on point-and-click skills training rather than building deeper IL competency. The authors developed a collaboration rubric to liberate librarians from this deadlock. This rubric document uses 9 lenses to focus the librarian-instructor collaboration on relevant sub-categories that show a variety of instruction modes. Some of these lenses include assignment design, the timing of instruction, librarians’ visibility in virtual class spaces, and librarians’ involvement in assessment. The rubric …

Promoting Feminist And Queer Scholarship At Santa Clara University, Helene Lafrance, Ray Scroggin Jun 2018

Promoting Feminist And Queer Scholarship At Santa Clara University, Helene Lafrance, Ray Scroggin

Staff publications, research, and presentations

The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGST) department at Santa Clara University consists of six full-time faculty and more than 30 “affiliate” faculty who teach WGST courses occasionally while being officially attached to another department. Most of these affiliate faculty conduct and publish research related to feminist and gender studies.

In 2016, the Chair of the WGST Department approached the library to see if we could create a web site or portal to feature feminist and queer works produced by faculty across the Santa Clara campus. After determining that it was technically feasible, the library suggested the use of the institutional …

Sense-Making And The Community College Student, Susan T. Wengler Jun 2018

Sense-Making And The Community College Student, Susan T. Wengler

Publications and Research

A qualitative pilot study is underway at Queensborough Community College - The City University of New York to explore the information behaviors of community college students in the context of an assigned research task. Two research questions are addressed: RQ1: How do community college students make sense of research assignments?; RQ2: What role does the academic library play in community college students’ sense-making processes?

This project is framed using Dervin’s Sense-Making Theory of Information Behavior (Dervin, 1998). Community college students are interviewed and asked to reconstruct their experience in the completion of a research assignment. Per Dervin’s model, the assignment …

To Zotero Or Not To Zotero: Importing Faculty Scholarship In An Institutional Repository, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis

ETSU Faculty Works

Creating cost-effective and time efficient methods to complete tasks is necessary to maintain speedy and quality services expected by library patrons. Charles C. Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University uses Zotero (a free, online reference management software) as a tool to expedite the process of entering faculty scholarship metadata into the institutional repository (IR), Digital Commons@ETSU (https://dc.etsu.edu). Additionally, Sherrod Library integrated Zotero with SHERPA/RoMEO (a database of publishers’ policies) to automate the process of determining which full-text materials can be included in the IR.

Sherrod Library evaluated the usefulness of Zotero by examining the records entered into the software …

Giving To Get Ahead: How To Be Generous Without Being A Doormat, Kiyomi D. Deards, Leo S. Lo Jun 2018

Giving To Get Ahead: How To Be Generous Without Being A Doormat, Kiyomi D. Deards, Leo S. Lo

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

Being a giver will help you succeed. This interactive presentation will focus on the practical application of Adam Grant’s theories about give and take. We will identify the different types of Givers, Matchers and Takers. Grant argues that the most effective organizations and teams have a culture of giving. Interestingly, the best and worst performing people in any organization are both Givers. Why does giving propel some people to the top and drag others down? Don’t be a victim of your own success! Giving strategically can increase your impact and prevent burnout. We will define effective giving and demonstrate how …

A Day In The Life Of Evil, Matthew Boedy Jun 2018

A Day In The Life Of Evil, Matthew Boedy

The Qualitative Report

Evil is a well-traveled word. It is a word that finds itself in many a discussion about many a subject. And it is not just an American trend; it is used in English-language countries in various ways, some mirroring its use in the States. And because evil is such a broadly used word, its rhetorical power can best be seen in part by its rhetorical scope. This is why this ethnographic study aims to analyze the uses of evil on the English language internet over the course of a day. The day chosen was October 24, 2016, situating the analysis …

The Roles We Played: Exploring Intimacy In Research, Kathleen M. Alley Jun 2018

The Roles We Played: Exploring Intimacy In Research, Kathleen M. Alley

The Qualitative Report

Intimate relationships can serve as catalysts impelling us to deeply interact with others, and, consequently helping us to develop a greater understanding of ourselves, those with whom we come into contact, and the wider world. This manuscript describes the challenges and constraints I faced when engaged in qualitative research with an intimate other. I borrow from Dr. Carolyn Ellis’ (2007) concept of relational ethics, which requires researchers to: (a) act from their hearts and minds, (b) acknowledge interpersonal bonds to others, and (c) take responsibility for actions and their consequences. Power is a part of intimate relationships, so exploring and …

Inquiring To Benefit Society While Protecting Subjects: The Debates, Complexities And Moral Obligations Of The Irb Review Process, Dudu Jankie

The Qualitative Report

Whitney’s text Balanced Ethics Review: A Guide for Institutional Review Board Members highlights and problematizes pertinent issues in the Institutional Review Board (IRB) review process with a focus on the USA. The book, which is meant for “IRB member or chair” engages readers in exploring in-depth and from multiple perspectives the debates on the roles and responsibilities of IRBs. Within this context, the author demonstrates the need for the IRB process that balances the protection of human subjects with the benefits of research to the society. Furthermore, the book engages readers in exploring and reflecting on the intersections between power …

Perception & Perspective: An Analysis Of Discourse And Situational Factors In Reference Frame Selection, Robert J. Ross, Kavita E. Thomas Jun 2018

Perception & Perspective: An Analysis Of Discourse And Situational Factors In Reference Frame Selection, Robert J. Ross, Kavita E. Thomas

Conference papers

To integrate perception into dialogue, it is necessary to bind spatial language descriptions to reference frame use. To this end, we present an analysis of discourse and situational factors that may influence reference frame choice in dialogues. We show that factors including spatial orientation, task, self and other alignment, and dyad have an influence on reference frame use. We further show that a computational model to estimate reference frame based on these features provides results greater than both random and greedy reference frame selection strategies.

Using Eeg-Validated Music Emotion Recognition Techniques To Classify Multi-Genre Popular Music For Therapeutic Purposes, Dejoy Shastikk Kumaran Jun 2018

Using Eeg-Validated Music Emotion Recognition Techniques To Classify Multi-Genre Popular Music For Therapeutic Purposes, Dejoy Shastikk Kumaran

The International Student Science Fair 2018

Music is observed to possess significant beneficial effects to human mental health, especially for patients undergoing therapy and older adults. Prior research focusing on machine recognition of the emotion music induces by classifying low-level music features has utilized subjective annotation to label data for classification. We validate this approach by using an electroencephalography-based approach to cross-check the predictions of music emotion made with the predictions from low-level music feature data as well as collected subjective annotation data. Collecting 8-channel EEG data from 10 participants listening to segments of 40 songs from 5 different genres, we obtain a subject-independent classification accuracy …

"It's Not Equality": How Race, Class, And Gender Construct The Normative Religious Self Among Female Prisoners, Rachel Ellis Jun 2018

"It's Not Equality": How Race, Class, And Gender Construct The Normative Religious Self Among Female Prisoners, Rachel Ellis

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Works

Prior sociological research has demonstrated that religious selves are gendered. Using the case of female inmates—some of the most disadvantaged Americans—this article shows that dominant messages constructing the religious self are not only gendered, but also deeply intertwined with race and class. Data from 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork on religion inside a U.S. state women’s prison reveal that religious volunteers—predominately middle-class African American women—preached feminine submissiveness and finding a “man of God” to marry to embody religious ideals. However, these messages were largely out of sync with the realities of working class and poor incarcerated women, especially given their …

Where The Sagebrush Grows: Capturing University History In Institutional Repositories, Dylan Burns Jun 2018

Where The Sagebrush Grows: Capturing University History In Institutional Repositories, Dylan Burns

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

In the Spring of 2017, Utah State University's library went through a reorganization that placed its digital initiatives department under an umbrella with special collections and archives. Through this change librarians within Digital Initiatives saw new connections between their work and the work of archivists. The institutional repository (IR), once an island in the library, is becoming a showcase not just for research created on campus but for university history through collaboration with university archives. Propelled by this organizational realignment, librarians began large scale digitization projects to provide access to University commencement programs, alumni and departmental magazines, yearbooks, and student …

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. Magnesium sulphate is accepted as the anticonvulsant of choice in these conditions and is present on the WHO essential medicines list and the Indian National List of Essential Medicines, 2015. Despite this, magnesium sulphate is not widely used in India for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. In addition to other factors, lack of availability may be a reason for sub-optimal usage. This study was undertaken to assess the availability and use of magnesium sulphate at public and private health care facilities in two districts of North Karnataka, India.

METHODS: A …
