The Social Provision Of Healthcare To Migrants In The Us And In China, Van C. Tran, Katharine M. Donato

Publications and Research

This article develops a comparative analysis of healthcare provision to migrants in the US and in China. It proceeds in three parts. First, we begin by describing the growth of the unauthorized population and trace the evolution of social provision of healthcare to immigrants, highlighting the restrictive nature of federal social provisions and greater autonomy of state and local governments in redefining eligibility criteria in the US. Second, we examine the impact of legal status on healthcare access and utilization among Mexicans, using original data from the 2007 Hispanic Healthcare Survey and the Mexican Migration Project. We find that unauthorized …

It’S All In The Relationships: A Liaison Role For Librarian-Publishers, Emily Carlisle, Kristin Hoffmann

Western Libraries Presentations

In fall 2017, we initiated a migration of the University of Western Ontario’s 32 library-hosted journals from the bepress Digital Commons platform to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This was a response to concerns expressed by librarians and journal editors regarding potential implications of Elsevier’s August 2017 acquisition of bepress, including the possibility that Elsevier might place ads on their journal pages or increase fees for journal-hosting services. Our goal was to mitigate those concerns by ensuring that Western Libraries’ journal platform remained as open and community-driven as possible. Because the migration coincided with a librarian taking on responsibilities …

Only Connect: Graduate Students, Mobile Devices, And Academic Workflows, Lee Ann Fullington, Frans Albarillo

Publications and Research

Students often own multiple devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets, and work within these personal device ecosystems for academic purposes. This qualitative study explores the research question: how are graduate students using mobile technologies in their academic practices? Rather than simply counting how many devices a student uses, we delve into how they use the devices and how their workflow for completing academic tasks emerged and is adapted throughout the course of their studies. We selected graduate students, as this group is underrepresented in the literature and their responsibilities for employment and family life are often different than those of …

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common and used venue for publication by STEM faculty and researchers. Subject librarians at one of the largest public research institutions in the United States are tailoring workshops geared towards faculty to create awareness of predatory publishing. Our research question involved identifying STEM faculty at our institution who have published in questionable journals and bringing this to their attention through a series of faculty workshops.

This poster was presented at the American Library Association Annual Conference meeting for the Association of College and Research Libraries- Science Technology Section …

Separating The Wheat From The Chaff: Weeding The Collection Is A Collaborative Affair, Gregory M. Nelson, Meg F. Frost, Betsy S. Hopkins, Mark W. Jackson, Jed Johnston, David Pixton, Michael C. Goates

Faculty Publications

A library construction project led our library’s Science & Engineering Department to take on a massive evaluation of the entire science print collection and reduce the collection footprint by at least 36% within a 12 month period. In order to improve access, reduce the footprint, strengthen the robustness of our collection, and complete the project in an effective and timely manner, a methodology of how to choose, select, evaluate, and move the entire collection of over 360,000 items had to be established and vetted. A plan was developed between the library’s Science & Engineering Department and teams from collection development, …

During that attack that occurred only three miles away from campus, the library was described as a sanctuary that students reportedly did not want to leave. In an attempt to gain insight into what makes a community space safe and comforting, especially during an attack like the Mandalay Bay shooting, survey data will be collected from UNLV students to evaluate their perceptions of safety within the school’s main branch library. What …

services provider that serves individuals and families in need in the Las
Vegas area, including over 3,000 refugees each year. Last year, three MLIS
students from the University of Washington reached out to this organization
and helped to identify an information need for new refugees. Although local
city information for refugees is freely available online, this delivery
method is not beneficial to individuals with limited English language
proficiency or low digital literacy. In partnership with CCSN, we created a
physical informational resource guide for refugees located in Southern
Nevada, which …

Removal Of Pb2+ Ions From Consuming Water Using A Fabricated Water Filter For Home Use, Pantaree Sodkhoksoong, Papidchaya Chanpong, Thunyarus Rodsawatchuchoke

The International Student Science Fair 2018

Lead contamination in water is one of the worldwide concerned environmental problems. For example, lead leaking from pipe corrosion and solder has been found contaminated in consuming water in many U.S. areas. The uncontrolled release of effluents containing lead from various industries has also caused lead-contaminated water in Thailand. Exposing to lead-contaminated water can lead to serious symptoms (e.g. fatigue, headaches, abdominal pain, irritability, depression, and seizures) or even death. Therefore, the elimination of lead ions (Pb2+) from consuming water or from effluents before releasing into the environment is necessary. The selection of adsorbents and the fabrication of …

Communicating Diversity: Writing And Reflections About Diversity In Organizational Settings, Andrea L. Meluch

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

Diversity includes the differences among various personal and social identities that individuals carry into their professional lives and is an important element of organizational work (Allen, 1994, 2011). As students are expected to be competent communicators in diverse workplaces, this activity provides students with the opportunity to design and appraise diversity statements in an organizational setting. Instructors interested in this 45-minute activity will be provided with instructions on guiding a lecture, small group writing assignment, and class discussion related …

Name That Place: Reconsidering Diversity And Globalization Through The Architecture Of Ethnic Enclaves, Tim Michaels Jun 2018

Name That Place: Reconsidering Diversity And Globalization Through The Architecture Of Ethnic Enclaves, Tim Michaels

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

Introducing students to a conversation about the disbursement of cultures through globalization is often difficult to approach. In this single-class activity, globalization is introduced through a virtual game which is focused on ethnic enclaves, the small immigrant neighborhoods that retain much of the immigrants’ original culture despite existing within a dominant one. Students will reconsider their intercultural communication, diversity awareness, and understanding about the effects of globalization and cultural assimilation by assessing stereotypes that emerge from the architecture of ethnic enclaves. By challenging students to identify the location of several ethnic enclaves through pictures, without the broader geographic context, a …

Heroically Protecting Our Arguments: Using Superheroes To Teach Inductive And Deductive Reasoning, Christopher J.E. Anderson, Emily A. Mueller, Alana C. Schneider

Discourse: The Journal of the SCASD

Abstract

Barkl, Porter, and Ginns, (2012) explain the importance of reasoning as it relates to fluid intelligence and an individual’s capacity to broaden their understanding of knowledge. With the difficulty many students find in recognizing examples of reasoning, this teaching activity uses student descriptions of superheroes to teach inductive and deductive reasoning skills. Educators are provided with the instructions to conduct a 50-minute lesson to explain these skills, allow students to form and recognize their own examples of inductive and deductive reasoning, and variations on how to conduct this assignment in both the physical and online classroom environments.

Salmonella In The Student Union! Applying The Best Practices In Crisis Communication In A Mock Crisis Activity, Ashleigh Day

Due to the nature of crises as well as their ability to produce high uncertainty and to threaten goals and well-being, there are communicative exigencies that need to be addressed relating to health effects and risks, which can vary depending on the crisis, publics, and the organization(s) that is(are) responding. This lesson plan uses Seeger’s (2006) “Best Practices in Crisis Communication” to illustrate how different organizations utilize and implement crisis communication during the onset of a crisis. These scenes prompt a lively discussion as well as a critical reflection about what makes social support effective and the consequences of ineffective social support for coping, identity, and relational closeness. Instructors are provided with a lesson plan (that …
