Robust Heteroscedasticity Consistent Covariance Matrix Estimator Based On Robust Mahalanobis Distance And Diagnostic Robust Generalized Potential Weighting Methods In Linear Regression, M. Habshah, Muhammad Sani, Jayanthi Arasan
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The violation of the assumption of homoscedasticity and the presence of high leverage points (HLPs) are common in the use of regression models. The weighted least squares can provide the solution to heteroscedastic regression model if the heteroscedastic error structures are known. Based on Furno (1996), two robust weighting methods are proposed based on HLP detection measures (robust Mahalanobis distance based on minimum volume ellipsoid and diagnostic robust generalized potential based on index set equality (DRGP(ISE)) on robust heteroscedasticity consistent covariance matrix estimators. Results obtained from a simulation study and real data sets indicated the DRGP(ISE) method is superior.
Dirty Snow: The Impact Of Urban Particulates On A Mid-Latitude Seasonal Snowpack, David James Kelley
Dirty Snow: The Impact Of Urban Particulates On A Mid-Latitude Seasonal Snowpack, David James Kelley
Theses - ALL
This thesis examines the spatial distribution of particulate matter in snow around a mid-size, midlatitude city. Particulates are small, light absorbing impurities that are produced from the incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuel. When deposited on the snowpack, these particles reduce snow albedo and accelerate melt. Two experiments were designed to explore the distribution and effect of urban particulate emissions on snow surrounding Syracuse, NY (43.049897, -76.149102, pop: 149,000). The “directional study” examined the relationship between distribution and cross-city prevailing wind, while, the “transect study” examined the variability of particulate concentration with distance from a busy interstate highway. Fifteen sites were …

Kennedy Retirement Plunges Supreme Court Into Politics. Here's How To Turn Down The Heat., Scott S. Boddery
Kennedy Retirement Plunges Supreme Court Into Politics. Here's How To Turn Down The Heat., Scott S. Boddery
Political Science Faculty Publications
Justice Anthony Kennedy’s decision to retire from the Supreme Court could create a sea change in the court’s jurisprudence for years to come. The debate about his successor will once again underscore the fierce partisan politics that surround the court.
It’s worth recalling that the constitutional framers originally envisioned a Supreme Court that was insulated from such politics. In fact, Alexander Hamilton argued quite famously, in Federalist No. 78, that the court must be protected from the electorate in order to serve as a check against the political branches of government without fear of reprisals at the ballot box. Equilibrium Wage Rigidity In Directed Search, Gabriele Camera, Jaehong Kim
Equilibrium Wage Rigidity In Directed Search, Gabriele Camera, Jaehong Kim
ESI Working Papers
Matching frictions and downward wage rigidity emerge as equilibrium phenomena in a twosided labor market where firms sustain variable wage adjustment costs. Firms post wages to attract workers and matches are endogenous. Reducing the wage relative to the wage previously posted is costly to the firm, where the cost is proportional to the size of the proposed cut. Shocks to the firm’s profitability may yield an equilibrium wage above what the firm would offer absent proportional adjustment costs. Wage cuts can be partial or full, immediate or delayed, and are non-linear in the shock size. Importantly, wages are sticky even …
Group Contingency Game Comparison: Examining The Role Of Group Sizes, Chelsea Carr
Group Contingency Game Comparison: Examining The Role Of Group Sizes, Chelsea Carr
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Problem behavior, such as disruption or property destruction, is commonly observed in classrooms, and interferes with student education. The purpose of this study was to examine effects of group size within a well-studied class-wide behavior management intervention, the GBG. Consistent with previous research, the GBG was effective in decreasing disruptive behavior but there was no clear differentiation between GBG big and GBG small. The students and the teacher showed high social validity for the GBG.
How Can Teens Be Reasonable? Reasonable Expectations Of Privacy In The Digital Age, Lori A. Hoetger
How Can Teens Be Reasonable? Reasonable Expectations Of Privacy In The Digital Age, Lori A. Hoetger
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Fourth Amendment only protects against government intrusions into spaces or information that receive a reasonable expectation of privacy—a subjective expectation of privacy that society is willing to recognize as reasonable (Katz v. United States, 1967). Judges are tasked with determining when a reasonable expectation of privacy exists. But as evidenced by justices’ confusion at oral arguments in recent Supreme Court cases, judges do not always fully grasp new technology. The current dissertation aims to guide courts attempting to navigate the new terrain of expectations of privacy in wired communications.
Scholars have expressed concern over the impact the ubiquity …
The Oath Keepers: Patriotism, Dissent, And The Edge Of Violence, Sam Jackson
The Oath Keepers: Patriotism, Dissent, And The Edge Of Violence, Sam Jackson
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation investigates a prominent group in the patriot/militia movement called the Oath Keepers. It explores how the group uses references to core political ideas and important political events from American history. It argues that these rhetorical strategies serve three purposes: (1) helping the group’s supporters to make sense of contemporary America, (2) providing the group’s supporters with models of appropriate behavior in response to ongoing events, and (3) help the group to gain additional support. It also argues that different rhetorical strategies are useful for different purposes and target different audiences.

Perceptions Of Public And Private Partnerships In Costa Rica, Alvaro Andres Salas Castro
Dissertations - ALL
In this dissertation, I explore the perceptions and beliefs of decision-makers, public officials, and stakeholders engaged in transportation infrastructure policies and infrastructure public-private partnerships (IPPPs) in Costa Rica. Specifically, I use Q methodology coupled with interviews of both participants and non-participants to answer four research questions: (i) What do public officials and leaders believe are the most important things to consider when designing infrastructure public and private partnership for a highway construction project in Costa Rica? (ii) What are the most contentious issues in developing and implementing infrastructure PPPs? (iii) Are there areas of consensus among the representatives from various …
Cognitive, Emotional, And Contextual Factors Related To Delusional Ideation, Sharanjit D. Pujji
Cognitive, Emotional, And Contextual Factors Related To Delusional Ideation, Sharanjit D. Pujji
Theses and Dissertations
Our beliefs profoundly influence how we interact and understand the experiences we have and the world around us. However, some individuals may develop 'false' beliefs (i.e., delusions) that are not grounded in consensual reality that may create adversities for the individual or others. Although various theories have been developed relating to the formation and maintenance of delusions, explaining their origins, meanings, and precise influence is a difficult task due to the highly individualistic nature of beliefs. The current study examined a number of likely candidate processes suspected of contributing to the formation and maintenance of delusional ideation in a sub-clinical …

Dental calculus (calcified dental plaque) is prevalent in archaeological skeletal collections and is a rich source of oral microbiome and host-derived ancient biomolecules. Recently, it has been proposed that dental calculus may provide a more robust environment for DNA preservation than other skeletal remains, but this has not been systematically tested. In this study, shotgun-sequenced data from paired dental calculus and dentin samples from 48 globally distributed individuals are compared using a metagenomic approach. Overall, we find DNA from dental calculus is consistently more abundant and less contaminated than DNA from dentin. The majority of DNA in dental calculus is …
Experiences Explored Through The Prism: Out Gay And Lesbian Pathways To University Presidency, Patrick Englert
Experiences Explored Through The Prism: Out Gay And Lesbian Pathways To University Presidency, Patrick Englert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The profile of university presidents has changed very little in the past twenty-five years, with the majority being white males (Kim & Cook, 2013). The presence of the ‘lavender ceiling’ (Friskopp & Silverstein, 1995) in higher education is evidenced in there being less than one percent of university presidents who openly identify as lesbian and gay (L&G) (Rivard, 2014). Colleges and universities continue to be largely heteronormative and struggle to create safe, supportive, and just campuses; mirroring instead the bias and microaggressions that occur outside the insulated walls of academia (Bazarsky, Morrow, & Javier, 2015; Vaccaro, 2012).
This multi-case qualitative …
Queer’Ing Croporate Pride: Memory, Intersectionality, And Corporeality In Activist Assemblies Of Resistance, Hunter C. Thompson
Queer’Ing Croporate Pride: Memory, Intersectionality, And Corporeality In Activist Assemblies Of Resistance, Hunter C. Thompson
Theses - ALL
This thesis chronicles two areas of queer social movement activity—the history of Pride in major metropolitan American cities, and Queerbomb a DIY Pride festival in Austin, Texas—to critique the material-spatial impacts of corporate culture on performances of LGBTQ Pride, pinpointing how business interests limit the lines of solidarity that can be drawn around queerness at Pride assemblies. Using fragments gathered from historical accounts, field interviews, and the internet, I explore scenes of radical activist worldmaking resisting the corporatization of numerous Pride events. This exploration intervenes in counterpublic theory (Asen; Brouwer; Fraser) by emphasizing the need to explore public space and …
Alcohol And Cannabis Use For Sleep Aid In College Students: A Daily Diary Investigation Of Proximal Outcomes, Patricia A. Goodhines
Alcohol And Cannabis Use For Sleep Aid In College Students: A Daily Diary Investigation Of Proximal Outcomes, Patricia A. Goodhines
Theses - ALL
Emerging evidence suggests that one in five college students use substances such as alcohol and/or cannabis to help sleep. Despite this high prevalence of sleep aid use, there remains a dearth of research on its potential proximal sleep- and substance-related consequences day-to-day. The current study remedied this literature gap by examining how alcohol and cannabis sleep aid use impacted subsequent sleep and substance use consequences among college substance users. Out of the baseline sample of 217 students, 83 past-month alcohol and/or cannabis sleep aid users (mean age = 19.33 [SD = 1.11], 30% male, 72% White) completed online questionnaires for …

Simultaneous Regional Detection Of Land-Use Changes And Elevated Ghg Levels: The Case Of Spring Precipitation In Tropical South America, Armineh Barkhordarian, Hans Von Storch, Ali Behrangi, Paul C. Loikith, Carlos R. Mechoso, Judah Detzer
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
A decline in dry season precipitation over tropical South America has a large impact on ecosystem health of the region. Results here indicate that the magnitude of negative trends in dry season precipitation in the past decades exceeds the estimated range of trends due to natural variability of the climate system defined in both the preindustrial climate and during the 850–1850 millennium. The observed drying is associated with an increase in vapor pressure deficit. The univariate detection analysis shows that greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing has a systematic influence in negative 30-year trends of precipitation ending in 1998 and later on. …
Local Bureaucrats And Climate Change Adaptation, Bridget K. Kelley
Local Bureaucrats And Climate Change Adaptation, Bridget K. Kelley
Dissertations - ALL
In local communities across the United States, local government officials – specifically local bureaucrats – are faced with the realities of a changing climate which include severe storms, prolonged droughts, larger and more damaging floods, and more. Simultaneously, the issue of climate change is incredibly polarized in US politics with one side claiming it is not happening (or if it is happening it is not human caused) and the other framing the issue as the direst threat (or close to it) facing the planet.
This dissertation examines a empirical puzzle, asking whether and how local bureaucrats respond to the threat …
Losing Home: Housing, Displacement, And The American Dream, Jessie Speer
Losing Home: Housing, Displacement, And The American Dream, Jessie Speer
Dissertations - ALL
Over the past decade, new oral history archives and self-publishing platforms have led to an explosion in the production of memoirs and oral histories of homelessness. This dissertation frames the growing genre of homeless life narratives as a form of urban theory that has been largely displaced from public memory. Based on close readings of hundreds of memoirs and oral histories of homelessness from cities across the United States, this research highlights the violent geographies of the American dream, in which both political economies of urban housing and heteropatriarchal cultures of domesticity produce racialized and gendered cycles of displacement. Further, …
Effects Of Motivation On Prospective Memory Performance In Huntington's Disease, Emily Jane Kellogg
Effects Of Motivation On Prospective Memory Performance In Huntington's Disease, Emily Jane Kellogg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prospective memory (PM) refers to memory for future intentions and involves several cognitive processes including memory, executive functions, and attention. PM has been studied extensively in clinical populations in which these cognitive processes are impaired but has only recently been studied in Huntington’s disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disease of the basal ganglia that is associated with neuropsychiatric, movement, and cognitive changes. The purpose of the present study was to further examine PM in HD, as well as investigate the influence of impulsivity on PM performance and whether a monetary incentive (either reward or loss) would improve PM performance. Results of …
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Analysis Of Behavioral Patterns And Treatment Barriers, Kimberly A. Knap
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Analysis Of Behavioral Patterns And Treatment Barriers, Kimberly A. Knap
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience difficulties with social communication and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped behavior patterns that place them at an increased risk for developing challenging behaviors that warrant early intervention (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). These problems are unlikely to decrease without intervention. Research indicates that parents’ involvement in behaviorally based interventions improves the functioning of children with ASD (Horner, Carr, Strain, Todd, & Reid, 2002). . Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (Eyberg & Funderburk, 2011) is an empirically supported intervention for young children with disruptive behaviors. PCIT shares similarities with numerous proven ASD treatments including caregiver involvement, structure …
Race And Gender In (Re)Integration Of Victim-Survivors Of Csec In A Community Advocacy Context, Joshlyn Lawhorn
Race And Gender In (Re)Integration Of Victim-Survivors Of Csec In A Community Advocacy Context, Joshlyn Lawhorn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I use feminist ethnography at a nonprofit organization to analyze the racialized gender in (re)integration of victim-survivors of commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). Critical race feminism and intersectionality are the theoretical frameworks to guide the analysis of community advocacy. The analysis considers two themes with various subsections that capture CSEC at the site. The first theme analyzes the definition, challenges, coordination and rhetoric of reintegration at the site. The second theme highlights the site’s racial identity, Black victimhood of victim-survivors of CSEC in the context of community, and racialized gender within reintegration. I discuss the strategic …
Early Literacy Abilities In Spanish-English Emergent Bilingual Children From Varied Dialectal Backgrounds, Antonietta Mastrota
Early Literacy Abilities In Spanish-English Emergent Bilingual Children From Varied Dialectal Backgrounds, Antonietta Mastrota
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Hispanic population within the United States has grown to a considerable amount. The state of Florida’s population is 25% Hispanic, with projected estimates of this population continuing to grow in the coming years (Ortman & Shin, 2011). Statistics show that 28.3% of the state’s population, over the age of five, speak a language other than English at home. With this considerable number of Spanish-speakers comes the responsibility to adjust certain educational practices to best meet their needs. Literacy is an essential part of learning, and therefore assessing early literacy is an essential part to any child’s academic development.

De Mestizas A Indígenas: Reindigenization As A Political Strategy In Ecuador, Pamela X. Pareja
De Mestizas A Indígenas: Reindigenization As A Political Strategy In Ecuador, Pamela X. Pareja
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The 1990s were a period of intense socio-economic upheaval in Ecuador, in part due to the numerous protests that would come to be known as the Levantamiento Indígena. Notoriously disenfranchised since the bloody conquest of the Americas, peoples of various Indigenous nationalities that reside within Ecuador fought for the constitutional recognition of the nation as both plurinational and multicultural, in order to secure intercultural public policies that would affect patterns of agrarian distribution, indigenous education, health, and overall representation. The prominence of the Indigenous movement and the revalorization of the Indigenous identity throughout Ecuador became an attractive vehicle for which …
Longitudinal Change In Parent-Adolescent Communication About Sexuality, Laura M. Padilla-Walker
Longitudinal Change In Parent-Adolescent Communication About Sexuality, Laura M. Padilla-Walker
Faculty Publications
Purpose: Research suggests that parents can be important sources of sex education for their children, but we know little about how this type of communication changes developmentally. Thus, the current study explored longitudinal change in child-, mother-, and father-reports of parent-child communica- tion about sexuality, and how change might be associated with behaviors indicative of sexual risk.
Methods: The sample included 468 adolescents (52% female, 67% white) who participated every year from age 14 to 18, and their mother and father. Results: Growth-curve analyses revealed relatively low and stable levels of parent-child communication from all three reporters, with some differences …

Polityka Historiczna: Debating Holocaust Remembrance In Poland, Connor Kridle
Voces Novae
On February 6th, 2018, Polish President Andrzej Duda signed “the amendment to The Act on the Institute of National Remembrance,” or as some in the western media called it, Poland’s “Holocaust law.” Such an amendment struck many outside Poland as a surprise act of revisionist history by the far-right, nationalist party in power. This project argues that this amendment must be placed in the greater context of Polish post-communist struggle to form a national narrative that includes the events of the Holocaust. The path to the enactment of the amendment can be traced back over a decade. While its passage signals …
