Environmental Conservation In Bhutan: Organization And Policy
Environmental Conservation In Bhutan: Organization And Policy
Asian Review
This article is about Bhutan's success in conserving natural resources and the environment through its organizational and public policy perspectives. At the same time, it analyses the weaknesses and strengths of Bhutan's policy and organizational management in environmental conservation. The integration of the sustainable development approach and the Mahayana Buddhism philosophy has led to the creation of the Gross National Happiness (GNH) which is an important concept that drives the Bhutan government to pay more attention to environmental protection. The close relationship between the Bhutanese and the environment is in accordance with the old beliefs and the influence of Buddhism …
International Mechanisms Towards The Rohingya Crisis, Hakim Pongtigor
International Mechanisms Towards The Rohingya Crisis, Hakim Pongtigor
Asian Review
The Rohingya crisis is extremely complex and will be very difficult to resolve if the only solution to the problem is up to the Myanmar Government alone and the Rohingya people. This is because the crisis involves gross violations of humanitarian principles. Resolving this conflict demands the participation of members of the international community as the violations fall within the realm of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). International mediation may also be required to resolve the conflict. The R2P seems to be an effective mechanism to …

Extracting Semantic Relations From The Quranic Arabic Based On Arabic Conjunctive Patterns, Rahima Bentrcia, Samir Zidat, Farhi Marir
All Works
© 2017 The Authors There is an immense need for information systems that rely on Arabic Quranic ontologies to provide a precise and comprehensive knowledge to the world. Since semantic relations are a vital component in any ontology and many applications in Natural Language Processing strongly depend on them, this motivates the development of our approach to extract semantic relations from the Quranic Arabic Corpus, written in Arabic script, and enrich the automatic construction of Quran ontology. We focus on semantic relations resulting from proposed conjunctive patterns which include two terms with the conjunctive AND enclosed in between. The strength …

Investigating Consumer Optimum Stimulation Level And Exploratory Online Buying Behavior, Claro G. Gañac
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Technology and the Internet have changed every facet of human life on the planet. It has spawned online marketplaces where consumers anywhere around the world can shop 24/7 throughout the year. This empirical study aimed to explain the meteoric rise of Internet shopping not just because of the leaps-and-bounds advances in technology but also by intrinsic predisposition of consumers to engage in exploratory buying and consumption. The Internet has brought about a shopping environment with high inherent avenues for exploratory behavior. It is the proposition of this study that online shopping has encouraged exploratory information acquisition, heightened evaluation involvement, and …

Remembering Forgotten Foods: A Collaborative Project, Azher Jaweed, Sophia Alhadeff, Claire Roberts, Avery Perkins
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Our final project aimed to validate indigenous knowledge and empower younger generations about their rich, organic farming practices while also debunking the stereotypes of American food culture. Additionally, we aimed to reverse the sense of inferiority about agricultural practices in Sikkim amongst young people. The first component will consist of a cooking activity focused around forgotten foods. The second part of the project compares the preparation process of two dishes– one made in Sikkim and the other from the United States. The first poster compares a traditional Himalayan dish with a typical American dish. The second compares the sourcing of …

Defining The Issue: Social Movements' Framing Strategies In Neocolonial Senegal, Ezra M. Alltucker
Defining The Issue: Social Movements' Framing Strategies In Neocolonial Senegal, Ezra M. Alltucker
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study examined framing strategies of protest movements in Dakar Senegal, particularly those focused on issues of foreign exploitation. Two major groups were surveyed, FRAPP and Cos M23, with interview notes and transcripts forming the basis of frame analysis. The findings showed that Cos M23 utilized a narrow frame that focused on linking certain sets of behaviors to being a good citizen, while FRAPP created a larger discursive framework in which diagnostic, prognostic, and motivational framing strategies were present in order to both link France and western imperialism to issues as well as induce the general public to take actions …

Psychology Faculty Research
Quantifying cortisol concentration in hair is a non-invasive biomarker of long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activation, and thus can provide important information on laboratory animal health. Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and capuchins (Cebus apella) are New World primates increasingly used in biomedical and neuroscience research, yet published hair cortisol concentrations for these species are limited. Review of the existing published hair cortisol values from marmosets reveals highly discrepant values and the use of variable techniques for hair collection, processing, and cortisol extraction. In this investigation we utilized a well-established, standardized protocol to extract and quantify cortisol from marmoset ( …
Problematic Sexual Beliefs And Behaviors In The Church: A Content Analysis Of Faith-Based Curricula Related To Evidence-Based Interventions, Vicki Neill
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Internet pornography use, sexual problems, and sexual addiction are problematic not only for society but also for the church. The religious community needs interventions that can effectively treat sexually addictive and non-addictive problems that do no harm to individuals. The purpose of this study was: (a) to examine five faith-based curricula available for use in churches to determine whether they include key evidence-based treatment (EBT) components found effective in treating sexual addiction, and (b) to determine whether these curricula differentiate between addictive versus non-addictive sexual behaviors. Because no known studies have been conducted to examine faith-based treatment (FBT) curricula for …

Sexual Violence Victimization, Mental Health, And University-Based Health Service Use Among College Females, Julie E. Stoner
Health Services Research Dissertations
Females between the ages of 18 and 24 consistently experience higher rates of sexual violence compared to females in any other age group (Sinozich & Langton, 2014). Approximately one in five college women experience sexual violence victimization (SVV; Krebs, Lindquist, Berzofsky, Shook-Sa & Peterson, 2016) during the academic year. Among undergraduate female students, 23.1% are victims of sexual violence due to physical force, violence or incapacitation (Cantor et al., 2015). Sexual victimization has been associated with several short- and long-term psychological health consequences, accounting for enhanced symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and suicide risk (Basile, Smith, Breiding, Black & Mahendra, …

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications
This report presents the development of a Montana tourism forecasting model. We forecast not only annual nonresident visitors to the state, but also forecast recreation visits to both Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Monthly data between 1992 and 2014 are used in a General to Specific Modeling approach to establish regression coefficients that are then used to ex post forecast 2015-2017, and ex ante forecast 2018-2020 for Montana and 2018-2019 for the National Parks. The forecast models perform well and better than base comparisons using Naïve 1 and Naïve 2 methods as evaluated by Mean Absolute Percent Error (MAPE). Monthly …

While various tools have been created to assist the digital forensics community with acquiring, processing, and organizing evidence and indicating the existence of artifacts, very few attempts have been made to establish a centralized system for archiving artifacts. The Artifact Genome Project (AGP) has aimed to create the largest vetted and freely available digital forensics repository for Curated Forensic Artifacts (CuFAs). This paper details the experience of building, implementing, and maintaining such a system by sharing design decisions, lessons learned, and future work. We also discuss the impact of AGP in both the professional and academic realms of digital forensics. …
A Content Analysis Of Relationships And Intimacy In Teen Dramas On Television, Sara Valoise Lamb
A Content Analysis Of Relationships And Intimacy In Teen Dramas On Television, Sara Valoise Lamb
Theses and Dissertations
Television programs continue to play a significant role in a teenager's life as they become involved in dating relationships. Adolescence is a pivotal period of life. Teenagers' usage of media, especially television, provides a source of norms and scripts of what a relationship looks like. The portrayals of sexual content in teen programs has become a source of sexual information instead of parents and peers. Many parents are unaware of the sexual content teen programs deliver to their audiences. This study analyzes how teen dramas create expectations through their portrayal of relationships and intimacy on television. Five teen television programs …

Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Pediatric Brain Volume, Sanam Jivani Lalani
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effects of lesion presence within larger brain networks (e.g., default mode network (DMN), salience network (SN), and mentalizing network (MN)) in the chronic phase of a pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the effect on social function. We compared children with a TBI to children with an orthopedic injury (OI) with three different aims. The first aim was to determine whether network volume differed by group (e.g., TBI vs. OI). Second, investigate if lesion presence in a sub component region of the network resulted in total network volume loss for that network. Finally, learn whether network …
The Relationship Between Experiential Avoidance And Physiological Reactivity, Brodrick Thomas Brown
The Relationship Between Experiential Avoidance And Physiological Reactivity, Brodrick Thomas Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the universal nature of stress, and its impact on physical health, it is important to understand how it is related to other psychological variables. The current study was undertaken in order to investigate whether an individual's cardiovascular reactivity to stress is impacted by their level of experiential avoidance, as measured by the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II). Individuals who are experientially avoidant are more likely to attempt to escape or prevent certain experiences and make effort to change them or avoid the contexts in which they occur. Previous research has indicated that experiential avoidance is related to some …

The Globalization Of Journalism Ethics: Exploring Feasibility And Value In A Globalized World, Sherine Mansour
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
This study explores the value and feasibility of globalizing journalism ethics. Many media ethicists have explored the concept and need for globalizing journalism ethics codes to better serve the globalization of journalism in general, but no one has yet to survey journalists and their stakeholders. This research endeavors to explore this missing element for the argument supporting a new Global Code of Ethics for journalists, and simultaneously explores the role global journalists may need to play in the future to remain relevant in an interconnected world.

Do Hedge Funds Exploit Rare Disaster Concerns?, George P. Gao, Pengjie Gao, Zhaogang Song
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We find hedge funds that have higher return covariation with a disaster concern index, which we develop through out-of-the-money puts on various economic sector indices, earn significantly higher returns in the cross-section. We provide evidence that these funds’ managers are more skilled at exploiting the market’s ex ante rare disaster concerns (SEDs), which may not be associated with disaster risk. In particular, high-SED funds, on average, outperform low-SED funds by 0.96% per month, but have less exposure to disaster risk. They continue to deliver superior future performance when SEDs are estimated using the disaster concern index purged of disaster risk …
