Connected Autonomous Vehicles: Capacity Analysis, Trajectory Optimization, And Speed Harmonization, Amir Ghiasi
Connected Autonomous Vehicles: Capacity Analysis, Trajectory Optimization, And Speed Harmonization, Amir Ghiasi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emerging connected and autonomous vehicle technologies (CAV) provide an opportunity to improve highway capacity and reduce adverse impacts of stop-and-go traffic. To realize the potential benefits of CAV technologies, this study provides insightful methodological and managerial tools in microscopic and macroscopic traffic scales. In the macroscopic scale, this dissertation proposes an analytical method to formulate highway capacity for a mixed traffic environment where a portion of vehicles are CAVs and the remaining are human-driven vehicles (HVs). The proposed analytical mixed traffic highway capacity model is based on a Markov chain representation of spatial distribution of heterogeneous and stochastic headways. This …
A Participatory Action Research Using Photovoice To Explore Well-Being In Young Adults With Autism, Gary Yu Hin Lam
A Participatory Action Research Using Photovoice To Explore Well-Being In Young Adults With Autism, Gary Yu Hin Lam
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Young adults with autism transitioning from school to adulthood are commonly described as exhibiting poor outcomes. Although there has been research efforts measuring quality of life and life satisfaction in individuals with autism, these conceptualizations of well-being are still predominantly deficit-focused and based on normalizing ideals of the dominant culture. Only by incorporating individuals with autism’s perspectives and involving their meaningful participation in research can we better understand and promote well-being among individuals with autism. The present study aims to explore young adults with autism’s ideas about well-being. I conducted a Photovoice project using a participatory action research approach with …
Opening Wounds And Possibilities: A Critical Examination Of Violence And Monstrosity In Horror Tv, Amanda K. Leblanc
Opening Wounds And Possibilities: A Critical Examination Of Violence And Monstrosity In Horror Tv, Amanda K. Leblanc
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines contemporary horror TV, dissecting the ways it works both to subvert and uphold contemporary social standards about race, gender, class, and ability. This work attends to the moments in horror TV where graphic displays of violence and monstrous characters open up possibilities for innovative and progressive representation of historically marginalized people, as well as those instances that foreclose such potential. Horror TV shows blur the definitions of monster and human, suggesting that humans can be monstrous and that monsters can have humanity. Horror TV is a platform through which we see the coming together of a traditional …
Investigation Of Graduate Student Stress In Speech Language Pathology, Rochel Lieberman, Lesley Raisor-Becker, Carney Sotto, Erin Redle
Investigation Of Graduate Student Stress In Speech Language Pathology, Rochel Lieberman, Lesley Raisor-Becker, Carney Sotto, Erin Redle
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The purpose of this research was to investigate the average stress levels and types of stressors experienced by graduate students (GS) in speech-language pathology (SLP) programs and the academic supports GS perceived to be helpful. An online survey examining stress was administered to 238 GS in SLP. The average stress level, types of stressors, demographic characteristics of participants related to their stress response, and reported academic program supports were analyzed. Correlation coefficients were computed to determine the relationship between reported stress, demographic variables, and program characteristics. Moderate and high levels of stress were reported by 96% of SLP GS as …

Risk Management Practices At University Clinics In Communication Sciences And Disorders, Dorothy Neave-Ditoro, Donald A. Vogel, Susan E. Wortsman, Paul W. Cascella
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
This study surveyed university clinic directors of audiology and speech-language pathology programs throughout the United States, and identified the content and risk management (RM) practices embedded into graduate curricula. One hundred and two (102) respondents provided information, via an electronic survey, about their campus and departmental RM practices. More than half of the programs reported embedding RM concepts into at least one graduate course yet only slightly above half of the programs assessed students’ RM knowledge. Pre-professional students were most often trained in protecting patient’s privacy and fire drills. Approximately one-third participated in university-wide programs, and 11 of the 102 …
Predicting Graduate School Success In A Speech-Language Pathology Program, Larry Boles
Predicting Graduate School Success In A Speech-Language Pathology Program, Larry Boles
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Graduate programs in speech-language pathology continue to experience high volumes of applicants seeking admission. There appear to be as many configurations of admission criteria as there are graduate programs. Yet, what evidence do we have for these criteria making a difference in graduate student outcome? Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, undergraduate grade point average (GPA), prerequisite GPA, letters of recommendation, and letters of intent are valued differently by programs. These variables were investigated for their value in predicting successful graduate school outcome in a program of speech-language pathology. Three measures proved predictive: the verbal portion of the GRE, the quantitative …
Mainland Southeast Asia In The Longue Durée: A Zooarchaeological Test Of The "Broad Spectrum Revolution" In Northern Thailand, Cyler Norman Conrad
Mainland Southeast Asia In The Longue Durée: A Zooarchaeological Test Of The "Broad Spectrum Revolution" In Northern Thailand, Cyler Norman Conrad
Anthropology ETDs
In northern Thailand, previous zooarchaeological research suggests that hunter-gatherers consumed a broad diversity of animal resources during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and afterwards (Gorman 1971a). This is a pattern characteristic of Kent Flannery’s (1969) “broad spectrum revolution” hypothesis. Based primarily on presence and absence evidence, faunal assemblages in northern Thailand typically include species of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and shellfish, suggesting that prehistoric foragers consumed a wide range of taxa within this mainland Southeast Asian tropical environment. Although zooarchaeological analyses commonly identify this pattern within prehistoric cave and rockshelter sites, past investigations have 1) not attempted to formally test Flannery’s hypothesis, …
Why The Uk Needs A Separate Justice System For People With Mental Illness, Karen A. Snedker
Why The Uk Needs A Separate Justice System For People With Mental Illness, Karen A. Snedker
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
"Severe mental illness is on the rise in the UK, and an increasing number of people with mental illness are behind bars and supported by inadequate mental health services. This is a situation that could be improved by the introduction of courts specifically geared for hearing cases involving defendants with mental health issues."
An Experimental Study On The Impact Of Informal Rape Myth Education To Alter Rape Myth Acceptance Scores In A Non-Student Sample, Leah Noelle Reddy
An Experimental Study On The Impact Of Informal Rape Myth Education To Alter Rape Myth Acceptance Scores In A Non-Student Sample, Leah Noelle Reddy
Dissertations and Theses
Sexual assault has come to the forefront in terms of prevention and education for many social institutions such as college campuses. However, with a growing body of research highlighting the importance and effectiveness of interventions, research examining the impact of rape-related education on altering rape myth acceptance (RMA) among non-student populations is severely lacking. This is a problematic gap given the issue of sexual assault in the United States extends well beyond academia. The current study aimed to fill this gap by employing an experimental design with repeated measures. To detect changes in RMA after a short rape myth education …
Differential Well-Being In Response To Incivility And Surface Acting Among Nurses As A Function Of Race, Lauren Sarah Park
Differential Well-Being In Response To Incivility And Surface Acting Among Nurses As A Function Of Race, Lauren Sarah Park
Dissertations and Theses
Demand for healthcare services is rising dramatically as the proportion of older adults in the United States increases, and the success of these healthcare organizations depends on cooperation among patients, doctors, and nurses. These interpersonal interactions come with costs associated with managing one's emotions in ways that are in line with completing job tasks effectively, especially as past research has demonstrated that nurses are likely to experience and respond to incivility, and nurses of minority backgrounds even moreso. This study examines the effect of experiencing incivility on engaging in surface acting, or simulating emotions that are not actually felt; how …
Project Pan: Relationship Between Physical Health, Psychiatric Correlates, And Engagement In Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Alexander Jaffe
Project Pan: Relationship Between Physical Health, Psychiatric Correlates, And Engagement In Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Alexander Jaffe
Theses and Dissertations
Background: As evidenced by the literature, there is an abundance of research on undergraduate students and mental health. One reason for this is due to the collegiate environment, which has previously been found to increase students' stress levels. When undergraduate students experience these increased levels of stress, they cope with the stress in different ways. Non-Suicidal self-injury (NSSI), one way in which students negatively cope, is an intentional act of harming oneself without suicidal intent. Cutting, burning, hitting oneself, and severe scratching are common ways that individuals self-injure. The Experiential Avoidance Model of Deliberate Self-Harm explains that non-suicidal self-injury …
Sell Yourself: Building A Foundational Structure Around An Institution's Position In The College Application Process, Brock Thomas Adams
Sell Yourself: Building A Foundational Structure Around An Institution's Position In The College Application Process, Brock Thomas Adams
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The act of persuasion, specifically in the context of higher education recruiting, lacks both a breadth and depth of research. This could be due to economic trends inevitably promoting college attendance for high school seniors. With the recent influx of both online education, as well as for-profit institutions, there has been a shift in the approach to recruiting potential students to enroll at affiliated institutions each year. This study took a qualitative, grounded theory approach to understand both the intended persuasive strategies conceived by participating four-year Universities in the state of Utah, as well as the actual messages delivered to …

The Uses Of Community In Modern American Rhetoric, Cody Ryan Hawley
The Uses Of Community In Modern American Rhetoric, Cody Ryan Hawley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the functions of the term “community” in American social and political rhetoric. I contend that community serves as a god-term, or expression of value and order, which rhetors use to motivate actions, endorse values, include/exclude persons, and compensate for modern losses. Informed by the philosophy of Kenneth Burke, I explore the general features of “rhetorics of community,” including community’s ambiguity and status as an automatic good, the relationship between community and modernity, the myth of communal loss, and the uses of community as a site of political unity and contest. I analyze the writings of John Humphrey …
Everything Is Fine: Self-Portrait Of A Caregiver With Chronic Depression And Other Preexisting Conditions, Erin L. Scheffels
Everything Is Fine: Self-Portrait Of A Caregiver With Chronic Depression And Other Preexisting Conditions, Erin L. Scheffels
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation documents the joys and terrors of caring for my father throughout my twenties and early thirties. The story is autoethnographic and demonstrates the value of narrative research in fostering understandings of self, other, and the world around us. I call this reflexive practice of writing narrative education because as I engaged in it, I learned what it means to care, and how mental health and illness factor into the ways in which care is expressed and provided in my own relationships and beyond. In addition, throughout the story I was a member of the academic community, which makes …
“I Want Ketchup On My Rice”: The Role Of Child Agency On Arab Migrant Families Food And Foodways, Faisal Kh. Alkhuzaim
“I Want Ketchup On My Rice”: The Role Of Child Agency On Arab Migrant Families Food And Foodways, Faisal Kh. Alkhuzaim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory research study examines changes in food and foodways (food habits) among Arab migrant families in a small community in Tampa, Florida. It also explores how those families’ children may play a role in the process of change. Within this community, I conducted my research study at a private school, where I recruited families with children between the ages of eight and seventeen. In applying the ecological model of food and nutrition and the developmental niche theoretical framework, this research draws on qualitative methods, including structured interviews with parents; focus group discussion with parents; a food survey; and children’s …
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: A Tool For Veteran Reassimilation, Gino L. Collura
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: A Tool For Veteran Reassimilation, Gino L. Collura
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates veteran participation in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) as a tool of reassimilation for veterans suffering from anxiety, stress and/or combat PTSD associated with military deployment. From the onset of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn, challenges associated with U.S. Veteran assimilation and reintegration have been increasing. Coping with long term displacement, trauma, loss, and making sense of identity shifts between being an active duty service member and civilian can often present challenges when navigating back into civilian life.
By utilizing a neuroanthropological lens, ethnographic inquiry, surveys, semi-structured interviews, and …

Resisting Essentialism In Cultural Research: A Participatory Action Research Study Of Parent Involvement In Education Among Spanish-Speaking Students And Families, Michael J. Frank
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study aimed to investigate a locally-driven action research project to improve connections between Spanish-speaking Latinx parents and the high school that their children attend. Using Participatory Action Research (PAR), the study sought to create a collaborative research agenda that would empower the participants to study their own culture and practices at the school, and how the two combined to create a home-school partnership. Six parents and two members of the school’s bilingual staff comprised the PAR team, with a total of nine members including the principal investigator. The project began with the creation of a public sphere in …

Lives On The (Story)Line: Group Facilitation With Men In Recovery At The Salvation Army, Lisa Pia Zonni Spinazola
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I seek to examine the effects of purposeful journaling and guided storytelling on past traumas, perception of current lives, and the development of new coping skills among men at The Salvation Army’s residential adult rehabilitation center (ARC). All residents of the ARC must attend Christian-based devotional services, go to Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) meetings, follow the A.A. 12-step program, and sign up for several weekly counseling and educational groups, one of which is the “Guided Journaling and Storytelling” group I lead. The men who attended this group are (1) addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, (2) face homelessness, (3) …
Development And Validation Of The Waiting Assessment Interview Tool (Wait) And Evaluation Of Individualized Waiting Durations In Signaled Reinforcement, Claudia Campos Fleitas
Development And Validation Of The Waiting Assessment Interview Tool (Wait) And Evaluation Of Individualized Waiting Durations In Signaled Reinforcement, Claudia Campos Fleitas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Indirect assessments are widely used to identify environmental factors that may be manipulated or integrated in the development of direct assessments and behavior interventions for individuals with developmental disabilities. To date, there are no indirect assessments that can be used to evaluate the extent to which children who engage in problem behavior wait to receive reinforcement. However, there are effective behavior interventions to increase waiting. A treatment package consisting of functional communication training (FCT) and schedule thinning (i.e., multiple schedules) has been identified as an effective intervention to increase waiting in children who engage in problem behavior maintained by social …

A Nearly Complete Foot From Dikika, Ethiopia And Its Implications For The Ontogeny And Function Of Australopithecus Afarensis, Jeremy M. Desilva, Corey M. Gill, Thomas C. Prang, Miriam A. Bredella, Zeresenay Alemseged
Dartmouth Scholarship
The functional and evolutionary implications of primitive retentions in early hominin feet have been under debate since the discovery of Australopithecus afarensis. Ontogeny can provide insight into adult phenotypes, but juvenile early hominin foot fossils are exceptionally rare. We analyze a nearly complete, 3.32-million-year-old juvenile foot of A. afarensis (DIK-1-1f). We show that juvenile A. afarensis individuals already had many of the bipedal features found in adult specimens. However, they also had medial cuneiform traits associated with increased hallucal mobility and a more gracile calcaneal tuber, which is unexpected on the basis of known adult morphologies. Selection for traits …

Mapping Creative Spaces In Omaha, Ne: Resident Perceptions Versus Creative Firm Locations, Bradley Bereitschaft
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
In an era increasingly shaped by automation and globalization, industries that rely on creativity, innovation, and knowledge-generation are considered key drivers of economic growth in the U.S. and other advanced capitalist economies. This study examines the spatial distribution of creative firms and how they might align with perceptions of creativity in Omaha, Nebraska, a mid-sized U.S. urban area. Utilizing a survey, participant mapping exercise, and geospatial analyses, the primary goal was to identify formal and informal spaces of creative production and consumption, and determine to what extent the location of creative firms (both arts/mediaand science/technology-focused) may shape perceptions of creativity …
