Environments Past: Nostalgia In Environmental Policy And Governance, Jordan P. Howell, Jennifer L. Kitson, David Clowney Aug 2018

Environments Past: Nostalgia In Environmental Policy And Governance, Jordan P. Howell, Jennifer L. Kitson, David Clowney

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

A variety of factors shape environmental policy & governance (EPG) processes, from perceptions of physical ecology and profit motives to social justice and landscape aesthetics concerns. Many scholars have examined the role of values in EPG, and demonstrated that attempts to incorporate (especially) nonmarket values into EPG are loaded with both practical and conceptual challenges. Nevertheless, it is clear that nonmarket values of all types play a crucial role in shaping EPG outcomes. In this paper, we explore the role of nostalgia as a factor in EPG. We examine literatures on environmental values, governance, and affect in light of their …

Examining The Sources Of Violent Victimization Among Jail Inmates, Jared M. Ellison, Benjamin Steiner, Emily M. Wright Aug 2018

Examining The Sources Of Violent Victimization Among Jail Inmates, Jared M. Ellison, Benjamin Steiner, Emily M. Wright

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study involves an examination of the individual- and jail-level predictors of violent victimization during short-term incarceration using data from the most recent Survey of Inmates in Local Jails and the corresponding National Jail Census. Findings suggest that individuals whose attributes make them appear more vulnerable or whose attributes antagonize others have a greater risk of violent victimization in jail. In addition, the findings suggest that jails with more stagnant inmate populations and older jails may have higher levels of violent victimization. Overall, the study results add validity to the opportunity framework as a general explanation for victimization risk regardless …

Survey Of Research In Multiculturalism In Expressive Therapies, Christine Yerrakadu Aug 2018

Survey Of Research In Multiculturalism In Expressive Therapies, Christine Yerrakadu

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This capstone thesis literature review defines and explores the issues concerning multiculturalism in the field of expressive art therapies. Many authors have stated the need for multicultural education and self assessment of the clinician. Personal identification of the client should take precedence over generalization of world cultures. Self-assessment of the clinician is needed in order to examine possible personal biases. Awareness of multiculturalism is only the first step, and further exploration into education and skills using the expressive art therapies would hone multicultural competencies.

The Rent’S Too High: Self-Archive For Fair Online Publication Costs, Robert Thibault, Amanda Macpherson, Stevan Harnad, Amir Raz

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The main contributors of scientific knowledge—researchers—generally aim to disseminate their findings far and wide. And yet, publishing companies have largely kept these findings behind a paywall. With digital publication technology markedly reducing cost, this enduring wall seems disproportionate and unjustified; moreover, it has sparked a topical exchange concerning how to modernize academic publishing. This discussion, however, seems to focus on how to compensate major publishers for providing open access through a pay-to-publish model, in turn transferring financial burdens from libraries to authors and their funders. Large publishing companies, including Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, PLoS, and Frontiers, continue to earn exorbitant …

Evaluation Of Real-Time Feedback Via Telehealth: Training Staff To Conduct A Preference Assessment, Janelle Ausenhus Aug 2018

Evaluation Of Real-Time Feedback Via Telehealth: Training Staff To Conduct A Preference Assessment, Janelle Ausenhus

Theses & Dissertations

Effective, efficient, and accessible staff training procedures are needed to meet the service delivery demand for treating individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The present study evaluated the effectiveness of delivering real-time feedback via telehealth to train staff to conduct multiple stimulus without replacement (MSWO) preference assessments. A nonconcurrent multiple-baseline- across-participants showed that remote real-time feedback was associated with short training times and minimal sessions to achieve mastery. Generalization and maintenance probes indicated these skills were transferable to other preference assessments (i.e., edible preference assessments) and learners (i.e., children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder).

Teaching Caregivers To Integrate Four Play-Based Instructional Strategies Without Decrements In Child Play And Preference, Maegan Pisman Aug 2018

Teaching Caregivers To Integrate Four Play-Based Instructional Strategies Without Decrements In Child Play And Preference, Maegan Pisman

Theses & Dissertations

Young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often require systematic teaching to learn new skills, and caregivers can teach their children by embedding learning opportunities in a play-based context. However, researchers have not evaluated procedures to train caregivers to implement a combination of strategies designed to establish rapport and early language skills while maintaining play as a preferred context. We recruited two caregiver-child dyads composed of two mothers and their sons (3 and 4 years old). We used a multiple-probe design across strategies to demonstrate the efficacy of behavioral skills training on the mothers’ integration of parallel play, child-directed …

Emergent Completion Of Multistep Instructions Via Joint Control, Megan Vosters Aug 2018

Emergent Completion Of Multistep Instructions Via Joint Control, Megan Vosters

Theses & Dissertations

Teaching procedures that facilitate the emergence of novel responses allow for increased efficiency, which is critical when providing early-intervention services to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Three children diagnosed with ASD between 5 and 6 years old participated. In Study 1, we demonstrated functional control over the effects of teaching echoic rehearsals on the emergence of completing novel two-step instructions via joint control. In Study 2, we conducted an experimental analysis of joint control by disrupting rehearsal of the instruction and tacts of the objects in the instruction, which served as the sources of joint control. Our results support …

Determining The Adoption And Implementation Of Nutrition Policies At Food Pantries Across The United States, Meagan Helmick Aug 2018

Determining The Adoption And Implementation Of Nutrition Policies At Food Pantries Across The United States, Meagan Helmick

Theses & Dissertations

Food insecurity occurs when there is a lack of access to enough food to live an active, healthy life. Current efforts to address food insecurity include developing and implementing policies, programs, and practices at the federal, state, and local levels. Specifically, local efforts target decreasing food insecurity through emergency food networks including food banks and food pantries. Over the last several years, many food banks and food pantries have worked to improve the nutritional quality of the foods they offer. However, food pantries are smaller and less formal organizations than food banks. Thus, they have limited resources to develop and …

A Multi-Level Assessment Of Healthcare Facilities Readiness, Willingness, And Ability To Adopt And Sustain Telehealth Services, Jamie Larson Aug 2018

A Multi-Level Assessment Of Healthcare Facilities Readiness, Willingness, And Ability To Adopt And Sustain Telehealth Services, Jamie Larson

Theses & Dissertations

Telehealth technologies are becoming more pervasive throughout the healthcare system as a way to provide services to patients that would otherwise have difficulty with access. Currently, little is known about the current state of telehealth use within clinics and hospital in the US. Most studies evaluating telehealth programs are feasibility or small patient outcome studies from one location. Utilizing a hybrid framework combining the levels of complex socio-technical systems with the theory of ready, willing and able. The theory of ready, willing, and able is founded on the basis that these three preconditions need to be met for a change …

Black Americans’ Social Action Engagement In Their Racial Community: Examining The Roles Of Sociopolitical Control, Critical Reflection, And Racial Centrality, Debeka Bennett Aug 2018

Black Americans’ Social Action Engagement In Their Racial Community: Examining The Roles Of Sociopolitical Control, Critical Reflection, And Racial Centrality, Debeka Bennett

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Black Americans have been engaged in sociopolitical action since their involuntary enslavement in the United States beginning in the 16th century. Blacks have made significant strides in attempting to eradicate and bring awareness to social inequities experienced due to their race. However, not all individuals of African descent engage in sociopolitical behaviors for Black communities. Prior literature has attempted to assess factors that influence Blacks to engage in sociopolitical action but did not examine all the variables assessed in this study in one cohesive model. Therefore, this study aimed to examine Black Americans’ sociopolitical control and their engagement in social …

Examining Mental Health Stigma Among Doctoral-Level Healthcare Providers: The Impact Of Burnout, Therapeutic Optimism, Experience In The Field, And Gender On Attitudes Toward Patients With Mental Illness, Lindsay Blevins Aug 2018

Examining Mental Health Stigma Among Doctoral-Level Healthcare Providers: The Impact Of Burnout, Therapeutic Optimism, Experience In The Field, And Gender On Attitudes Toward Patients With Mental Illness, Lindsay Blevins

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study sought to discover differences in mental health stigma among doctoral-level healthcare providers. Previous research has found high levels of stigma among healthcare professionals and has often reported differences between non-mental health professionals and mental health practitioners (Bjorkman, Angelman, & Jönsson, 2008; Hori, Richards, Kawamoto, & Kunugi, 2011; Peris, Teachman, & Nosek, 2008). Most of the current literature has grouped many different levels of providers together, which makes it difficult to distinguish between the specific specialties and training models to determine if these factors impact stigma. Additionally, few studies have examined the connections between stigma and burnout or therapeutic …
