Does Length Of Ride, Gender Or Nationality Affect Willingness To Ride In A Driverless Ambulance?, Stephen Rice, Scott R. Winter, Rian Mehta, Joseph R. Keebler, Bradley S. Baugh, Emily C. Anania, Mattie N. Milner
Publications
Due to the frequent lack of ambulances and personnel, the purpose of this study was to examine consumers’ willingness-to-ride in an ambulance that was either driven by a human driver or completely automated (with no human driver) based on the gender of the participant and their nationality, either Indian or American. A two-study experimental design was utilized using over 1,000 participants. In Study 1, the length of the ride and the type of driver were manipulated while in Study 2, the length of the ride was manipulated across genders and nationality. Study 2 also collected affect measures to complete a …

How S. C. Daily Newspapers Framed The Removal Of The Confederate Flag From The State House Grounds In 2015 Through Letters To The Editor And Editorials, Thomas Craig Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The removal of the Confederate flag from the State House grounds in Columbia, South Carolina during the summer of 2015 was an action that had been discussed previously in the state since the flag went up over the State House in 1961. While the state legislature acted swiftly to have the flag removed after Gov. Nikki Haley’s announcement on June 22, the two and a half weeks between her announcement and removal on July 10 was filled with opinions from citizens all across the state and in areas of the United States where Confederate monuments and memorials still have a …
Integration Of Theory And Feasibility In Learning Disability Identification: Examining Criteria Effects In The Integrated Assessment And Intervention Model, Allison Stafford
Integration Of Theory And Feasibility In Learning Disability Identification: Examining Criteria Effects In The Integrated Assessment And Intervention Model, Allison Stafford
Theses and Dissertations
The accurate identification of learning disabilities is critical for applied settings as well as for research purposes. Currently, there are multiple methods of learning disability (LD) identification utilized by practitioners, including: IQ/achievement discrepancy, response to intervention, and patterns of strengths and weakness (Hale & Fiorello, 2004). Despite the use of these methods, there is a lack of research on the validity and the rates of Learning Disability identification associated with these methods. Additionally, the use of different methods creates potential differences in the base rates of students identified as having a learning disability. Further, the identification of learning disabilities needs …
Velocity Model For Co2 Sequestration In The Southeastern United States Atlantic Continental Margin, John Ollmann
Velocity Model For Co2 Sequestration In The Southeastern United States Atlantic Continental Margin, John Ollmann
Theses and Dissertations
The sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) is emerging as a major player in offsetting anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. With 40% of the United States’ anthropogenic CO2 emissions originating in the southeast, characterizing potential CO2 sequestration sites is vital to reducing the United States’ emissions. The overall goal of this research project, funded by the Department of Energy, is to estimate the CO2 storage potential for the Southeastern United States Atlantic Continental Margin. Previous studies find storage potential in the Atlantic continental margin. Up to 16 Gt and 175 Gt of storage potential are estimated for the Upper Cretaceous and Lower …
Delivering Information About Retirement Saving Among Hispanic Women: Two Facebook Experiments, Luisa R. Blanco, Luis Rodriguez
Delivering Information About Retirement Saving Among Hispanic Women: Two Facebook Experiments, Luisa R. Blanco, Luis Rodriguez
School of Public Policy Working Papers
We conducted two Facebook experiments (the first one during July 21–25, 2016, and the second during April 22–25, 2018) to determine what type of message related to injunctive norms is more effective in getting Hispanic women interested in learning about financial planning for retirement. We also explore how social media tools could be used in future interventions to promote retirement saving among Hispanic women. In both experiments, we found that a message centered on peer influence may be more successful than a message centered on familism in getting Hispanic women interested in learning more about financial planning for retirement. When …

Establishing A Review Process To Evaluate Research Guides, Heather Brown, Danielle Westmark, Christian I.J. Minter
Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
Springshare's LibGuide platform has become synonymous with online library pathfinders or research guides and instruction support. However, without oversight of the collection of guides and standards for their creation, unwieldy numbers and lack of uniformity prevail. The McGoogan Library of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center created a review process that not only governed the creation and approval of guides, but analyzed the usage and scope of guides that had already been created. This paper will outline the creation of standards and application of a review process to increase the value and relevance of guides.
Investigation Of Performance And Symptom Validity Testing In Children Utilizing Control, Simulation, And Clinical Groups, Elisabeth Vogt
Investigation Of Performance And Symptom Validity Testing In Children Utilizing Control, Simulation, And Clinical Groups, Elisabeth Vogt
Dissertations (1934 -)
Integral to neuropsychology, assessment relies on valid self-report and credible performance on neuropsychological tests. Symptom exaggeration and misrepresentation of abilities confound interpretation of neuropsychological test data, subsequent diagnosis, and treatment. Measures evaluating performance and symptom validity have been extensively studied in adult populations; however, similar research in child and adolescent populations is limited. In accordance with recommended research methodology, this study utilized a simulation design with community recruited and medical center clinical criterion groups which included 191 children and adolescents (7 to 16 years old). Sensitivity, specificity, and proposed cut-off scores are described for the Victoria Symptom Validity Test, Digit …
Causal Versus Consequential Motives In Mental Models Of Agent Social And Economic Action: Experiments, And The Neoclassical Diversion In Economics, Vernon L. Smith
Causal Versus Consequential Motives In Mental Models Of Agent Social And Economic Action: Experiments, And The Neoclassical Diversion In Economics, Vernon L. Smith
ESI Working Papers
"In this paper I want to begin with the neoclassical supply and demand model of markets (SDM), whose static equilibrium consequences predicted outcomes far more accurately than were anticipated in laboratory experimental tests of the theory actuated by Jevons (1862, 1871; Smith, 1962). The observed predictive accuracy of SDM was not anticipated because complete information on supply and demand was widely believed, thought and taught to be a necessary condition for finding equilibrium. 1 Jevons’ model required him to have complete information in any particular market, as he only articulated a model of market optimal outcomes, and no model of …

Identifying Latent Grouped Patterns In Panel Data Models With Interactive Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Gaosheng Ju
Identifying Latent Grouped Patterns In Panel Data Models With Interactive Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Gaosheng Ju
Research Collection School Of Economics
We consider the estimation of latent grouped patterns in dynamic panel data models with interactive fixed effects. We assume that the individual slope coefficients are homogeneous within a group and heterogeneous across groups but each individual’s group membership is unknown to the researcher. We consider penalized principal component (PPC) estimation by extending the penalized-profile-likelihood-based C-Lasso of Su, Shi, and Phillips (2016) to panel data models with cross section dependence. Given the correct number of groups, we show that the C-Lasso can achieve simultaneous classification and estimation in a single step and exhibit the desirable property of uniform classification consistency. The …

The Making Of A Construct: Lessons From 30 Years Of The Kogut And Singh Cultural Distance Index, Ilya R. P. Cuypers, Gokhan Ertug, Pursey Pmar M.A.R. Heugens, Bruce Kogut, Tengjian Zou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The 30-year anniversary of Kogut and Singh’s (1988) groundbreaking study that introduced the concept of cultural distance and its accompanying measure provides the opportunity to take stock of what makes for a good construct. We organize our discussion around the issues of concept, algorithm, and data to clarify and gauge their contribution, before highlighting the impact of their work more generally. Many of the challenges raised by critical observers focus on one of these three dimensions. As there is value in looking systematically at the construct from concept to data, we set out the argument of the index and discuss …

Volume, Volatility, And Public News Announcements, Tim Bollerslev, Jia Li, Yuan Xue
Research Collection School Of Economics
We provide new empirical evidence for the way in which financial markets process information. Our results rely critically on high-frequency intraday price and volume data for the S&P 500 equity portfolio and U.S. Treasury bonds, along with new econometric techniques, for making inference on the relationship between trading intensity and spot volatility around public news announcements. Consistent with the predictions derived from a theoretical model in which investors agree to disagree, our estimates for the intraday volume-volatility elasticity around important news announcements are systematically below unity. Our elasticity estimates also decrease significantly with measures of disagreements in beliefs, economic uncertainty, …
Does Health Insurance Make People Happier? Evidence From Massachusetts’ Healthcare Reform, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh
Does Health Insurance Make People Happier? Evidence From Massachusetts’ Healthcare Reform, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh
Research Collection School Of Economics
We study the effects of Massachusetts' healthcare reform on individuals' subjective well-being. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we find that the reform significantly improved Massachusetts residents' overall life-satisfaction. This result is robust to various sensitivity checks and a falsification test. We also find that the reform improved mental health. An additional analysis on the Tennessee healthcare reform supports our findings' external validity. Using the reform as an instrument for health insurance coverage, we estimate its large impact on overall life-satisfaction. Our results provide novel evidence on the psychological consequences of Massachusetts' healthcare reform.

Experiential Organizing: Pursuing Relational And Bureaucratic Goals Through Symbolically And Experientially Oriented Work, Keimei Sugiyama, John Paul Stephens
Faculty Scholarship
Current scholarship on organizational practices that foster a sense of care and collaboration in work relationships has yet to fully account for the potential misalignment between the goals of a given practice and how it is actually experienced. To address this issue, we develop a theoretical framework of experiential organizing, which we define as an iterative process through which positive relational and bureaucratic goals of a practice are pursued via symbolically and experientially oriented work. We offer theory to explain how organizations move through the experiential organizing process, what different types of work are required, and how the different parts …
Examining The Development Effects Of Modern-Era Streetcars: An Assessment Of Portland And Seattle, Jeffrey Brown, Joel Mendez
Examining The Development Effects Of Modern-Era Streetcars: An Assessment Of Portland And Seattle, Jeffrey Brown, Joel Mendez
Mineta Transportation Institute
Most U.S. cities pursuing streetcars are doing so primarily for their purported development effects, as opposed to for their transportation role, yet there is little evidence about the nature or magnitude of these development effects due to a scarcity of rigorous, empirical research. Most available work simply presents descriptive information about development outcomes (typically measured as changes in population, employment, land values, or permit activity) within streetcar corridors as indicators of the streetcar’s development effects. Alternate factors which may have influenced such results are often not considered, placing into question the validity of such measures.
This study examines the development …

We study the effects of Massachusetts’ healthcare reform on individuals’ subjective well-being. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we find that the reform significantly improved Massachusetts residents’ overall life-satisfaction. This result is robust to various sensitivity checks and falsification tests. We find consistent evidence from other healthcare reforms such as the 2014 Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion and the 2005 Tennessee Medicaid disenrollment, supporting our findings’ external validity. Our results provide novel evidence on the psychological consequences of recent healthcare reforms expanding health insurance coverage to the uninsured.
A Frequentist Approach To Bayesian Asymptotics, Tingting Cheng, Jiti Gao, Peter C. B. Phillips
A Frequentist Approach To Bayesian Asymptotics, Tingting Cheng, Jiti Gao, Peter C. B. Phillips
Research Collection School Of Economics
Ergodic theorem shows that ergodic averages of the posterior draws converge in probability to the posterior mean under the stationarity assumption. The literature also shows that the posterior distribution is asymptotically normal when the sample size of the original data considered goes to infinity. To the best of our knowledge, there is little discussion on the large sample behaviour of the posterior mean. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap. In particular, we extend the posterior mean idea to the conditional mean case, which is conditioning on a given vector of summary statistics of the original data. We …

The Future Of California Transportation Revenue, Martin Wachs, Hannah King, Asha Weinstein Agrawal
Mineta Transportation Institute
Stable, predictable, and adequate transportation revenues are needed if California is to plan and deliver an excellent transportation system. This report provides a brief history of transportation revenue policies and potential futures in California. It then presents projections of transportation revenue under the recently enacted Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. Those revenue projections are compared with projections of revenue should SB 1 be repealed by voters in the November 2018 election. State-generated transportation revenues will be higher under SB1 than if the act is repealed. For 2020, the mean projection is that the state …
