Through Army-Colored Glasses: A Layered Account Of One Veteran’S Experiences In Higher Education, Phillip A. Olt Oct 2018

Through Army-Colored Glasses: A Layered Account Of One Veteran’S Experiences In Higher Education, Phillip A. Olt

The Qualitative Report

There is a lack of research on military veterans in higher education that captures the issues from an insider’s perspective. To that end, I sought to reflect upon my own experiences with higher education as military veteran—from a budding recruit all the way through to now being an administrator and faculty member. I utilized a layered-account autoethnographic approach (Ronai, 1995) to interrogate my multiple perspectives that developed over time on veterans’ issues in higher education. I found that the GI Bill—the modern iteration of the Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944—was a powerful motivator both in starting my military career and …

Transportation Behavior Change...Now With Science!, Jessica Roberts Oct 2018

Transportation Behavior Change...Now With Science!, Jessica Roberts

PSU Transportation Seminars

How can we encourage people to make use of the transportation systems in place - to improve transit ridership and, in turn, to improve the health and happiness of our societies?

New findings in behavioral science could unlock new, more effective ways to change transportation behavior...but only if we have a way to find and use that evidence. TransLink (Vancouver BC) undertook a groundbreaking research effort to use cognitive biases to explain why people drive today, and and to identify possible "nudge" strategies to shift those trips to transit and active modes. The resulting report includes brand-new ideas that area …

Do Negative Random Shocks Affect Trust And Trustworthiness?, Hernán Bejarano, Joris Gillet, Ismael Rodriguez-Lara

ESI Publications

We report data from a variation of the trust game aimed at determining whether (and how) inequality and random shocks that affect wealth influence the levels of trust and trustworthiness. To tease apart the effect of the shock and the inequality, we compare behavior in a trust game where the inequality is initially given and one where it is the result of a random shock that reduces the second mover's endowment. We find that first‐movers send less to second‐movers but only when the inequality results from a random shock. As for the amount returned, second‐movers return less when they are …

Navigating The Unknown: Experiences Of International Graduate Students From Muslim-Majority Countries In The Current Political Climate, Juanita Ariza, Madison Motoyasu, Holly Lustig, Ree M. Palmer, Benjamin Stalvey, Donna To

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

The United States was built upon oppression, colonization, slavery, and exclusionary policies. Today, our current policies and laws create and maintain acts of oppression through forms of discrimination, exploitation, and marginalization. Most recently, the Executive Order 13769 (2017) was created to intentionally restrict the travel of non-citizens, visitors, and residents from seven Muslim-majority countries. This study shares the experiences of 9 international graduate students from Muslim-majority countries in the current sociopolitical environments at a midwestern Predominantly White Institution (PWI) in the U.S. The study asks the question, “How do international graduate students conceptualize their sense of belonging on their campus?” …

Trump And An Anti-Immigrant Climate: Implications For Latinx Undergraduates, Jeremy D. Franklin, Rudy Medina Oct 2018

Trump And An Anti-Immigrant Climate: Implications For Latinx Undergraduates, Jeremy D. Franklin, Rudy Medina

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Historically minoritized students regularly report hostile campus climates and cultures, but the election of Donald J. Trump and the rise of conservative guest speakers on campuses have contributed to greater unrest. Using campus climate and culture literature as a framework, this paper investigates the impact of anti-Latinx rhetoric and race/ethnic unconscious policies on Latinx undergraduates. Findings from focus groups highlight eight themes: 1) Power of Political Rhetoric and Trump, 2) Coded Language, 3) Unsafe Academic Spaces, 4) Racialization of Immigration as a Latinx/Chicanx Issue, 5) Burnout, Stress, and Racial Battle Fatigue, 6) Balancing Academic Commitments and Social Activism, 7) The …

Cataloging Research By Design: A Taxonomic Approach To Understanding Research Questions In Cataloging, Rachel Ivy Clarke Oct 2018

Cataloging Research By Design: A Taxonomic Approach To Understanding Research Questions In Cataloging, Rachel Ivy Clarke

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

This paper asserts that many research questions (RQs) in cataloging reflect design-based RQs, rather than traditional scientific ones. To support this idea, a review of existing discussions of RQs is presented to identify prominent types of RQs, including design-based RQs. RQ types are then classified into a taxonomic framework and compared with RQs from the Everyday Cataloger Concerns project, which aimed to identify important areas of research from the perspective of practicing catalogers. This comparative method demonstrates the ways in which the research areas identified by cataloging practitioners reflect design RQs—and therefore require design approaches and methods to answer them.

Open Educational Resources: Intersections At The State And Institution Levels, Jennifer Mayer, Tanya Spilovoy

University Libraries Publications

Identifying constituent needs regarding Open Educational Resources is a key part of the process when engaging with stakeholders. Input gathered is crucial to influencing OER initiatives at the state and local level--and taking informed next steps. One presenter, a consultant hired by the state of Colorado, conducted a statewide OER survey in order to gain the input from a variety of populations and provide a report to a state legislative committee. The other presenter, a Colorado academic librarian and SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow, deployed OER surveys for students and faculty at their institution to help guide campus OER initiatives. …
