’The Girls Were All Faithful’: Organizing Local Union 172, United Garment Workers Of America At Long-Hargrove Manufacturing Company, Vicki Betts

Presentations and Publications

The decades leading up to World War I had seen the rise of two major movements in the United States—organized labor and women’s rights. In Tyler those two causes came together when the women garment workers at the Long-Hargrove factory created a local union and went out on strike during the middle of a major military uniform contract. With the assistance of members of the Cotton Belt union and representatives of the American Federation of Labor on the state and national levels, the women and girls at Long-Hargrove won their right to organize, and for the next eight years their …

Counseling and Guidance Faculty Publications (Archived)

The current study examined the potential relationship between homelessness, gender, and occurrence of Post-Traumatic Distress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD. Participants were 90 homeless persons from shelters located in a large, South Central Texas, metropolitan city of approximately 1.9 million persons. The study found that homeless participants reported high levels of childhood emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Homeless women reported higher rates of childhood abuse and were affected by PTSD at a higher frequency than homeless males. PTSD, Complex PTSD, and traumatic experiences such as childhood abuse appear to be contributing factors to homelessness. Results suggest the need for increased …

Privilege And Oppression In Counselor Education: An Intersectionality Framework, Christian D. Chan, Deanna N. Cor, Monica P. Band

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multiculturalism and social justice are considered major forces in the counseling profession, revolutionizing the complexity of social identity, cultural identity, and diversity. Although these major forces have influenced the profession, many challenges exist with their implementation within counselor education curriculum and pedagogy. A major challenge is the complex dynamics of privilege and oppression that both counselor educators and counseling students face. This article discusses the use of intersectionality to approach counselor education pedagogy and practice.

A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Three Brief Group Interventions For Individuals With Tinnitus, Erin Martz, Margaret Chesney, Hanoch Livneh, Chennettee Jelleberg, Bret Fuller, James A. Henry

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Tinnitus (ie, ear or head noises not caused by external sounds) is common among the general population and is the most prevalent service-connected disability in the United States’ Department of Veterans Affairs system. While numerous clinical interventions have been created to systematically address the range of issues caused by tinnitus, only a few tinnitus interventions have focused on both teaching and assessing coping strategies. The present pilot study involved a randomized clinical trial comparing 3 brief group interventions to a usual-care (UC) group (ie, a wait-list control group): the first intervention based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a …

Exploring The Policy Value Of Cable Franchise And Peg Fees, Duncan Stewart, Lee Shaker Jan 2018

Exploring The Policy Value Of Cable Franchise And Peg Fees, Duncan Stewart, Lee Shaker

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Subscribers to cable television typically pay Franchise and Public–Educational– Governmental (PEG) Fees. Ostensibly, these monthly fees exist to compensate communities for the private use of public goods and to bolster the marketplace of ideas. Little empirical research, however, assesses the utility of these fees as policy mechanisms. In this article, we track the existence and dispensation of the fees in the 20 largest American cities by examining their recent annual budgets. This provides a foundation to consider the fees’ contributions in the context of ongoing legal challenges to their existence and the increase of digital television services beyond their purview.

We hypothesize that lower public visibility of residential backyards reduces households’ desire for social conformity, which alters residential land management and produces differences in ecological composition and function between front and backyards. Using lawn vegetation plots (7 cities) and soil cores (6 cities), we examine plant species richness and evenness and nitrogen cycling of lawns in Boston, Baltimore, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Phoenix, Los Angeles (LA), and Salt Lake City (SLC). Seven soil nitrogen measures were compared because different irrigation and fertilization practices may vary between front and backyards, which may alter nitrogen cycling in soils. In addition to lawn-only measurements, …

Addressing The Enduring Primary Care Physician Shortage In The United States: The Direct And Indirect Effects Of Gender On The Medical Specialty Decision-Making Process, Kelly Rhea Macarthur, Emily Royer, Daniel N. Hawkins

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Background: There has been an enduring primary care (PC) physician shortage in the United States (U.S.) for decades, which is projected to worsen. With women entering PC at significantly higher rates than men, the aim of this study was to explore various pathways through which gender may affect the medical specialty decision-making process. Methods: Using data from the National Survey of Attitudes and Choices in Medical Education and Training (ACMET) II on a sample of 492 medical residents, this study employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore how gender shaped residents’ preferences for future practice and their perceptions …

Agenda Setting, Localization And The Third-Person Effect: An Experimental Study Of When News Content Will Directly Influence Public Policy Demands, Thomas Jamieson, Douglas A. Van Belle Jan 2018

Agenda Setting, Localization And The Third-Person Effect: An Experimental Study Of When News Content Will Directly Influence Public Policy Demands, Thomas Jamieson, Douglas A. Van Belle

Emergency Services Faculty Publications

Building from the third-person effect model of DRR policy adoption and mediated policy learning, this study provides an experimental examination of how specific elements of news media’s localisation of distant events directly influence public opinion. Controlling for salience effects, the construction of affinities between the distant, stricken community and the newspaper’s audience is argued to create a sense of shared vulnerability to the reported disasters. This is correlated within an increase in the respondent’s intention to act directly and an increase in their willingness to punish elected officials who do not act accordingly. The construction of difference between the communities, …

Lesson Plans For Teaching Economics With The Big Bang Theory, Wayne Geerling, G. Dirk Mateer, Ben O. Smith, James E. Tierney, Jadrian J. Wooten

Economics Faculty Publications

Using examples in the classroom from current and past television shows and movies is becoming increasingly common. Being able to relate ideas back to a popular clip or episode allows the instructor to reach students in ways the traditional lecture cannot. Building on the work of Tierney, Mateer, Smith, Wooten, and Geerling (2016), this paper introduces five lesson plans tied to clips from The Big Bang Theory that can be used in high school (9-12) economics courses.

Psychology Faculty Publications

In the summer of 2016, we issued a Call for Proposals to submit unique and innovative methodologies to rank I-O graduate programs. In response to this, many projects were proposed to us. After much hard work (and the broader SIOP community’s help), the five selected projects have been completed. Each of these five papers are included in the current issue of TIP. We believe each of these papers will be an important contribution to our field and will guide individuals in the future – as well as generate much thought and discussion about the state of our field and the …

Leadership In Workplace Meetings: The Intersection Of Leadership Styles And Follower Gender, Joseph R. Mroz, Michael Yoerger, Joseph A. Allen Jan 2018

Leadership In Workplace Meetings: The Intersection Of Leadership Styles And Follower Gender, Joseph R. Mroz, Michael Yoerger, Joseph A. Allen

Psychology Faculty Publications

Meetings are ubiquitous across organizations, yet researchers have paid scant attention to the role of meeting leaders in affecting meeting outcomes. Because meetings are important discursive sites, the style of a meeting leader may influence subordinate views of the meeting and leader. Using a sample of working adults, we first demonstrated that meeting attendees who perceived their leader as participative viewed the leader as more warm and competent than meeting attendees who had a directive leader. We explain this finding through the framework of social exchange theory. In Study 2, we conducted an experiment to further probe the relation between …

The Importance Of Leisure For Subjective Well-Being, Laruen Kuykendall, Louis Boemerman, Ze Zhu Jan 2018

The Importance Of Leisure For Subjective Well-Being, Laruen Kuykendall, Louis Boemerman, Ze Zhu

Psychology Faculty Publications

This chapter reviews what is known about how leisure contributes to subjective well-being (SWB). We review evidence documenting the importance of leisure for SWB and point to psychological need fulfillment as the main mechanism through which leisure promotes well-being. We discuss why individuals often do not fully experience the beneficial effects of leisure, focusing on intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints to leisure participation, and review differences in the degree and type of constraints experienced by different demographic groups. Finally, we review research on the cognitive and behavioral strategies individuals employ to overcome leisure constraints, and highlight the need to understand …

Past Publications

Over the past several decades in Nebraska, where and how people live has changed dramatically. In 1900, 67% of Nebraskans lived in nonmetropolitan counties. Today, 65% live in metropolitan counties. The transformation in where people live in Nebraska reveals changes in how people live as well. For instance, in this infographic you can see that metropolitan Nebraska is younger, more diverse and more educated. However, while there are differences between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan Nebraska there are some attributes of life in Nebraska that transcend county boarders. For instance, the high rate of labor force participation and the overwhelming majority of …
